Recent Bay Area Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know in December 2025 | Eater SF

"An unfussy, homey bar from the team behind wine bar favorite Red Tail, this newcomer has opened in the former Hobsons Choice, pouring Old Fashioneds and martinis alongside the beer and wine the team is well loved for; as of Monday, December 1, it’s open from noon to midnight Monday through Friday and until 1 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday." - Paolo Bicchieri

Hobson’s Choice: The Old Haight Street Location Gets New Life From Buzzy Bar Team | Eater SF

"Occupying the former Hobson’s Choice space at 1601 Haight Street, the Green Heron is a classic corner neighborhood bar in Upper Haight slated to open in fall 2025. The team behind the Red Tail wine and beer bars is running the project — their first location with a full liquor license — and part-owner Wes Wakeford says they’re still waiting on final paperwork while getting the lay of the land. The menu will be straightforward: upscale but in many ways a shot-and-beer bar focused on classics like Old Fashioneds and martinis, with a pared-down wine and local craft-beer selection compared to the Red Tail spots. Expect Miller Lites and Modelos alongside sours and IPAs from Northern California breweries such as Laughing Monk and Humble Sea, and the team hopes to offer an homage to Hobson’s Choice with rum drinks and punch-inspired beverages (details are scant). There will be no kitchen or food license, so the bar will serve small bites and snacks and welcome guests bringing items from nearby restaurants; with big windows and laid-back vibes, it aims to help return Upper Haight to form and capitalize on being one block from Haight-Ashbury for “extreme people-watching.”" - Paolo Bicchieri

Went in on a Saturday night to order a drink. Ordered a Captain & Diet which is a pretty standard drink. The bartender said he didn’t have Captain Morgan, no problem happens from time to time. But then the he started ridiculing me and telling me he had a lot of better rum and that he’d be happy to make me a real drink. Didn’t really know what to say, so I walked away. As I was walking away I could hear him laughing with the other bartenders that I asked for Captain. Didn’t stick around to find out anymore about the place. Won’t be back.

New owners took over the old Hobson's Choice and it's beautiful. So great to have a classy bar on Haight Street. Their bartender, Anthony, makes fantastic drinks. Atmosphere and music make it a great spot for a date.

Great place to stop by for a drink after shopping on haight. A much needed revamp of Hobson’s Choice. It still feels cozy like the old bar with some updates. You can bring in your own food.

Yelp
Stopped in a couple of times for a drink. This new bar is now the nicest bar on the Haight. They redid the whole place and it shows. From the new floor to the tables and the secret upstairs chill zone. They have a full bar with great tap beers. The bar tender, Kenny, is awesome. He's fully on top of everything. Very friendly and makes killer cocktails. I'm so happy that this great location is open again and that they did such a great job with it. They do not have a kitchen, but allow guests to bring in food from the many choices in the area.

Yelp
Just got kicked out of the green heron by the manager. Anthony, his co-manager David and the person behind the bar. Turk all kicked me out of the bar because I used the bathroom before buying a drink. Anyway, they asked me who I was and I told them I was a customer and they continued to make fun of me and fuel make me feel like I was unwelcome. Customer service I would say zero stars. I would also suggest retraining for staff. I think the retraining with staff should be focused on customer service, teaching staff how to properly engage with customers, teaching staff how to be courteous and polite. instead of feeling threatened, there were three boys who were very intimidated by my presence.

Yelp
So happy there is finally a classy bar on Haight - excellent mixologist, great atmosphere and art, I recommend you skip the tap and try My Cougar Goes 95 or an Elder Fashioned.

Yelp
A great addition to the Haight. The Green Heron Opens at 1:00 daily. It took the space of Hobson's choice. Kenny is fantastic. Ask him to make any drink, he's awesome.
