"Occupying the former Hobson’s Choice space at 1601 Haight Street, the Green Heron is a classic corner neighborhood bar in Upper Haight slated to open in fall 2025. The team behind the Red Tail wine and beer bars is running the project — their first location with a full liquor license — and part-owner Wes Wakeford says they’re still waiting on final paperwork while getting the lay of the land. The menu will be straightforward: upscale but in many ways a shot-and-beer bar focused on classics like Old Fashioneds and martinis, with a pared-down wine and local craft-beer selection compared to the Red Tail spots. Expect Miller Lites and Modelos alongside sours and IPAs from Northern California breweries such as Laughing Monk and Humble Sea, and the team hopes to offer an homage to Hobson’s Choice with rum drinks and punch-inspired beverages (details are scant). There will be no kitchen or food license, so the bar will serve small bites and snacks and welcome guests bringing items from nearby restaurants; with big windows and laid-back vibes, it aims to help return Upper Haight to form and capitalize on being one block from Haight-Ashbury for “extreme people-watching.”" - Paolo Bicchieri
