The Greyhound on the Test

Had the opportunity to stay here for work, and honestly, it was the best decision I made all week. The Greyhound on the Test is an absolute hidden gem. Food: Some of the best meals around. Huge credit to the chefs — the specials at the time were outstanding. Fresh, locally sourced produce, friendly staff, and it’s dog-friendly too, which is already a 5/5 in my book 🐶👏 Room: Spacious, beautifully decorated, and extremely comfortable. The bed was massive (almost too big for one person!), and I genuinely couldn’t fault a single thing about the room. Overall, a fantastic stay from start to finish. I’d happily come back and would highly recommend this place to anyone staying in the area. We had Saturday lunch here with our dog. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The food was awesome! I had the beef short rib and my other half had the cottage pie. Dessert was their chocolate brownie with bananas. All first class. We will be back! Highly recommend.

We had lunch at The Greyhound yesterday; it's a beautiful old building and the food is excellent. Service was a little slow, especially for pudding as the raspberry financier took much longer than the staff expected (new to the menu). They offered to take the service off the bill but everyone was so lovely that we asked them to put it back on. A very nice experience all round.

Lovely 2 night stay at this hotel on a recent UK road trip. The room was cosy and very comfortable with a large bed and nice bathroom. The shower was a bit low for me but the building is old and people in those time were tiny!! The food in the restaurant was delicious and there was a decent wine list. The staff were mostly very efficient and helpful, but when we arrived and had drinks in the bar the young staff were a bit slow due to chatting among themselves. This, however, did not spoil the experience in any way and we would recommend this place.

Lovely Sunday lunch at The Greyhound. Fixed-price menu, great value and really well cooked. The squash purée and red cabbage were real stand-out sides - full of flavour and perfectly done. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. Would happily return.

Had heard a lot about this spot and indeed had really been looking forward to heading there. A nicely put together pub; with elements of a truly great ‘gastro-pub’. A solid menu and indeed ‘prix-fix’ too. Charming staff whom from the off set were sadly clearly overwhelmed. Out of the starters the chicken terrine was tasty and well put together - the tomatoes from the prix-fix were hard and rather tasteless. Main courses were sadly average at best: bones in the sole and no flavour to the courgette pasta. The minute steak was flavoursome, but one would hope not to have gotten that wrong nonetheless. The child’s fish and chips was very good and enjoyed by our daughter. Puddings - chocolate delice tasty but way too cold - clearly served quickly (when asked where the puddings were) as we had already been waiting 20plus minutes. The olives we ordered with our drinks arrived after the main courses!? - we weren’t charged for these. It was clear - the issues were linked to understaffing that day (kitchen and on the floor) which in turn meant for very slow delivery of food and standards slipping beyond what they should be imagine. Have to say the young man and lady who served us - really tried and made effort. Would try it again if passing through as I suspect on a normal day it would be really good! Though - if the establishment is knowing full well that day they have limited staff - honour bookings but don’t allow loads of walk-ins…

Impressed! We had a lovely Saturday lunch here. My wife is raving about their Pumpkin veloute starter. The Ribeye and its baked potatoes were also cooked nicely. The freshly baked madeleines were a nice sharing treat for our table! Booking essentials, we saw a few people unable to get a table during our visit.

It’s been about 10 years since we last visited the Greyhound. Glad to say it’s as good as we remembered.! We had a lovely Thursday stay over here. Great breakfast and friendly service. Would be nice to return in the summer…..

Ceviche was great, Sea Bream was perfection. French fries are the best I've ever had. Moderate prices. great personal service. I'll be back! FP

Location, food and service were all very good, which is what you expect at this price range. But at a pre-ordered family meal, where we rang up and specified that my meal would not contain nuts. I am allergic so this is quite an important thing to get right! 10 mins after the main meal and it was apparent i'd ingested nuts at some point. Decent food and experience but if you think that the hours of painful stomach ache and discomfort are worth it then definitely dine here. Regards Will H
