San Diego’s Best Burgers | Eater San Diego

"Easily one of San Diego’s most classic burgers, the Drugstore Burger from the Grill at Torrey Pines is a slice of Americana. A nostalgic ode to Midwestern lunch counters of the past, this simple but expertly made burger consists of prime ground beef and homemade mayonnaise on a sesame bun, along with lettuce, tomato, onions, and pickles. The burger arrives with diner’s choice of french fries or a side salad doused in shallot vinaigrette. An industry favorite, the burger is also available at the hotel bar and by request at its fine dining restaurant, A.R. Valentien. Great for: Save this spot for a special occasion since the burger plate on its own will set you back $29." - Roxana Becerril

We were so pleased with our lunch at the Grill. The shrimp cocktail was beautiful with 6 large shrimp cooked and chilled to perfection. My husband had the Sloppy Joe that he enjoyed. (It was a bit messy) I had the Roma tomato soup that came with half a grilled cheese sandwich. It was delicious comfort food. Our service was perfect and having a view of the golf course.

Upon our arrival to The restaurant, we expressed our preference to sit at the fire pit table, only to be informed that we would need to wait for 15 minutes. While we waited in a rocking chair by the fireplace, I was surprised to see another group being seated at the very table we had requested after our 20-minute wait. When we approached the hostess (Caucasian lady) to address the situation, her response was dismissive, lacking an acknowledgment of our wait or an apology. We were then seated at another table, where we proceeded to order appetizers and main courses. I opted for the albacore tuna, but unfortunately, it did not meet the expected standards; I found it spoiled and had to return it. Despite my hesitation to sample another dish due to my loss of appetite, my husband encouraged me to try the cheeseburger. However, I received it with Swiss cheese instead of the cheddar I had requested. Given the series of disappointments, I chose to accept the order as it was without pursuing further adjustments. To make matters worse, after returning to our hotel, I experienced significant stomach discomfort, which I believe was a direct result of the food I consumed at The Grill.

Three breakfasts and a dinner under my belt makes me feel confident in reviewing this restaurant in the wonderful Torrey Pines Lodge. The resort cares about service - it’s evident in every employee interaction. The servers at The Grill are intentional about making guests feel cared for, too. The dinner menu helps with that a bit more than the breakfast entrees, in my experience. We found the flavors to be more layered and robust in one evening meal (pork chop and chicken, yes!) than we did exploring the breakfast menu over three days. Note that giving feedback can’t hurt. We found the avocado toast very different on two days and we had good luck specifying how “cooked” we preferred the omelet. Hot sauce on the egg dishes! Their house-made jam on the toast, and maybe they will realize that free refills on coffee in the form of a carafe can’t cost more than giving a tea drinker a second bag of tea when they want more than a 10-oz serving.

We were at the Hilton next door for my husband's conference. One of the staff there recommended that we try the Grill. We were so glad we did. We wound up having dinner on two different evenings and I had a late lunch- early dinner at one point on my own. We were so lucky to have Lisa B as our server each time. She made the whole experience even more enjoyable. She was friendly, remembered us by name each of the subsequent visits, and did a great job. We had the salmon, pork chop and shrimp cocktail the first visit. All were great. We also added the market veggies (we skipped those the second time as we felt they were not cooked- seasoned enough). I had the drug store burger for my early dinner along with a raspberry mojito. Or last eve we had the calamari (we ate it between two but should have had two more folks; it was a very generous portion). We also had the coconut swordfish and half chicken. Both were excellent. Highly recommend.

We visited this restaurant based on a recommendation from someone we met at another golf course. It seemed like they originally suggested A.R. Valentien, but since it was closed, we decided to come here instead. When we arrived, the sun was setting, and having dinner while watching the sunset was absolutely delightful. We dined outdoors and asked for a table with a better sunset view, but they told us all reservations were full and didn’t move us. However, most of the tables remained empty for about 1.5 hours while we were dining, so I wish the restaurant had been more transparent about seating availability. The food overall was very enjoyable: Fried Calamari was crispy and flavorful. Grilled Hanger Steak was served on two plates even though we only ordered one, which we really appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed. Wood Roasted Vegetables featured some unique vegetables we hadn’t tried before. They were tasty, but I personally think roasting them a bit longer would have made them softer and richer in flavor. It’s a great spot for a scenic dinner, but some improvements in reservation management would make the experience even better.

Google
Came here for weekend brunch and everything was great including service. We enjoyed the omelets and toast very much. I wish they served the same butter here as they do at AR Valentien (soft and salted), but the butter here was served cold and hard. Overall, great spot for breakfast or brunch. Can’t go wrong sitting inside or outdoors.

Google
Nice place for a relaxing meal. Staff was fantastic, prices were reasonable, view was great. I expected this place to be a little snobby..lol..but it absolutely was not! We will definitely return.

Yelp
Cute restaurant located right next to the Torrey Pines golf course. The view from the patio is really pretty. Brunch and lunch menus are good including classic items such as french toast or benedict eggs. Service is always great with attentive and professional staff. A bit pricey but worthy for a special occasion.

Yelp
The setting at this place is so awesome, but I was underwhelmed by the breakfast burrito. You get the quantity of food you pay for with a $20 breakfast burrito, so plus points for that. However, it was lacking in flavor and was fairly dry. The onions were burnt, eggs under-seasoned, and chorizo under-seasoned as well. I also recommend wrapping the burrito much tighter so it stays structurally sound while eating it. It was floppy and difficult to eat. Ultimately, I got this to go as the first customer at 6:30am (had a tee time to go to), so will cut them some slack. But it really would've been the cherry on top to an awesome Torrey experience if the burrito knocked it out of the park.

Yelp
The food was great. The coconut swordfish is perfect. Our server Joshua brought water for our little dogs. I love the architecture, and the landscaping is well cared for. The woman at the front desk offered our doggies treats as we were leaving, very sweet! It's nice to have free parking as well.
google avatar

Yelp
The ambiance is always killer here! Love the falafel burger and Caesar salad. They have a great wine and drink selection. The outside fire pits are such a vibe in the winter. Also wanted to shoutout their awesome waiter, Joshua, who exudes kindness and is full of smiles. Best waiter I've had here yet.

Yelp
Nice ambiance with a view of the golf course and ocean. We got a huevos rancheros which was delicious. I also got a mocha and a side of berries. The mocha was good and had whip cream on top. Service was great!

Yelp
One of the most enjoyable breakfasts I've experienced. The view, the food, the service would make any food magazine connoisseur or peon like me grant raving reviews. Very upscale trendy venue to begin your day in La Jolla. This is the life. So glad Doc brought us here.
google avatar

Yelp
First time at The Grill and was surprised by the average ratings. I actually had a very pleasant breakfast experience, and you can't beat that view! We were sat down immediately upon arrival, and drinks and food were promptly served. I really enjoyed the huevos rancheros, and my friend and I were very grateful for having a pitcher of coffee left in our table. Will definitely come back after a golf game for their dinner menu.

Yelp
30-year-old friendships don't grow on trees, not even Torrey Pines. We chose the grill for a meet-up after not having seen eachother for almost 2 years. Jared somehow provided the highest level of service catering to every single want or need while somehow never interrupting us or pausing our conversation. This happened on August 21, so life has taken control of my thoughts, feelings and experiences, including Burning Man, yet this lunch with an exceptional server, Jared still is in front of mind, weeks later. Anyhow, I encourage you to spend time at The Grill, ask for Jared. If he's not around, ask for Ethan, my secondary inspiration for this five star review.

Yelp
Think basic bar and grill on the most beautiful golf course. We unfortunately had to sit inside due to rain, but the views from the patio are lovely. Food was on par (no pun) for a grill, plenty of options. They have a more formal restaurant just above that we didn't have the chance to check out. Espresso martini: one of the better espresso martinis I've tired. I enjoy ones darker in color, less sweet and creamy, which describes theirs nicely. With Tito's, cold brew, and coffee liquor, this was the perfect brunch pick me up. Reuben: didn't try this sandwich, was reportedly good, your average Reuben. Smoked Tuna Salad Sandwich: very good, toasty levain bread, generous amount of albacore with the perfect remoulade and even extra mayonnaise on the bread which I'm always for! I appreciated that the tuna was the star of the show with just a small bunch of lettuce and a single tomato slice (which I actually don't recall?) Do not go out of your way, but if you want to check out the course and grab a bite, this will certainly do just fine!

Yelp
We went for breakfast here at "The Grill at Torrey Pines". We are very familiar with the place where the restaurant is. My Son had played golf in this area, we checked-in our friends here from out of town for a couple of days. We've also had dinner at their other restaurants in their lodge , but this was our first time to try their Breakfast here at "The Grill at Torrey pines". First of all, this is such a wonderful place to dine-in at, it's facing a Golf course, it's very relaxing, it has a nice breeze, and it has very nice View! We ordered the following: *SMOKED SALMON and CREAM CHEESE OMELET *AVOCADO TOAST *2 COFFEES My husband got the SMOKED SALMON and CREAM CHEESE OMELET, this dish was delicious. There were a lot of salmons in the omelet and it came with a nicely toasted bread and roasted potatoes. Also, there was a big chunk of Cream cheese tucked inside the Omelette, this one was very good. My Avocado toast was good, but the veggies on the side were too citrusy for me. My avocado toast is a good size, very filling. This is a good place to hang out and dine in with Family and Friends while having a nice View.

Yelp
Granted it was a holiday weekend and the course was busy, but breakfast service at the Grille (which wasn't super crowded inside or out) was seriously lacking. Had the hash and poached eggs, a staple and well known, but the eggs were overdone (almost hard boiled) and the corned beef had noticeable gristle throughout...what? Coffee was good and hot, and the sourdough breads and available jams were delicious. The manager graciously checked on us and offered full refunds, which was pleasantly surprising and very helpful. She was truly apologetic and professional (which was the correct thing to do), not sure what happened in the kitchen tho, and hope this isn't a trend for the future. Been coming to Grilled for over a decade and it was always a stop when we were in town or staying at the Lodge...not so much so much any more. Extra star is for the manager's professionalism and kindness.

Yelp
The view at the Lodge at Torrey Pines is rejuvenating as the golf course stretches towards the ocean. The interior gave the feel of a classy outback restaurant atmosphere, adding to the overall charm of the place. The staff were courteous and organized. I enjoyed the veggie burger and sweet potato fries. I was amazed at how the burger was marinated and tasted like a beef burger minus the grease. Good food paired with stunning scenery makes this lodge a place to visit.

Yelp
We came here mid day for drinks on the patio and then returned to meet our husbands after a game of golf for dinner. The mid day atmosphere for drinks was so fun. The weather was fantastic and drinks (beer and wine were good) We had a reservation that evening for outdoors for a party of 8. We were seated inside and they said we could move outside but they didn't want to take our order until we had moved. Finally they agreed as it was getting late. Several of us split burgers, salads, onion ring. The food was "meh" but also very expensive. Drinks were also expensive overall it's convenient to the course, byut we decided that next year on our weekend trip we will skip this restaurant for food. For 8 of us, our bill with drinks with mainly shared meals was over $800 and we left feeling meh.

Yelp
Awesome view of the golf course and the ocean. Food was delicious had the cheese burger and appetizer chips and onion dip was amazing. I highly recommend. The music that started at 4pm was a nice ambiance.

Yelp
Billion dollar views, great service and just a nice calm vibe. Went here for a business meeting. I tried their cheeseburger and it was great. Will have to go back to try some more of the food but the service was great, the seating is plentiful, amazing views of the golf course, pro shop and putting greens. You can even see the paragliders as they fly around the cliffs. Great relaxing spot to take a break from all the noise and bustle around San Diego.

Yelp
Beautiful location, great food and friendly service. We had a great time. Highly recommend sitting outside, especially dining the sunset.

Yelp
Have eaten here a couple times, previously during lunch and most recently for dinner following a round of golf. Surprisingly, our lunch was much better than dinner experience. First of all, eat outside. The inside is kind of depressing. The outside offers firepit tables or tables overlooking the greens/out toward the ocean (with heaters above to help take off the chill). Perhaps the biggest difference was our server, the dinner one not being nearly as friendly/helpful/enjoyable as the one we'd had previously. It really makes a big difference. She had a thick accent so perhaps there was a language barrier, but she seemed disinterested in general in serving our table. Regardless, for dinner we had the burger with onion rings (it was good - hard to mess it up), smoked chicken with roasted veg (again good- like the smokiness of the chicken; way too many onions in the veg melange)and then the split chicken with veggies. Have a gluten allergy so asked for the farro to be kept out of the split chicken entree. Appeared they removed it, but wasn't trusting our server's response. Probably the most annoying part of the meal was the hidden charge that was added sometime after giving them our cc but before adding tip/signing. One might not notice it b/c it's maybe 5% of the bill, but we decided to ask what it was and was told it's essentially a tip for the back of house staff like chefs and dishwashers. Hmmm - I'm giving a generous tip for the meal and it used to be that servers would give a small portion of their tip to various appropriate support staff. Certainly doesn't make me want to select the higher tip options when the check comes. And seriously, adding 5% in a sneaky way? Just increase the cost of each item so I know what I'm buying at what price. In contrast, our lunch experience was amazing with the absolute best tri-tip salad and oak roasted chicken and fruit salad. That experience is why they get 5 stars and why we chose to return. So...if you're in the area give it a try. Sit at one of the outside tables, get one of their smoked meat meals and have a delicious glass of wine to accompany it.

Yelp
I selected the grill for a family dinner, some of whom were visiting from out of town. This ended up being a great location with beautiful views of the golf course, water and sunset. I had only been here to golf but never to eat and if you're visiting the restaurant it is a little hard to decipher if you can park in the golfers lot or not. We opted to park in the parking garage to be on the safe side. It is also like a maze in the lodge and had to ask how to get to the grill from the garage, however they escorted us which was very nice. The restaurant itself has a very nice outdoor patio with a front row seat to watch the sunset. It does get a little cold out there since it's close to the water and loud because of the fighter jets flying overhead. Bring a jacket! This time around we sat inside and pretty much had the room to ourself. The wait staff was friendly attentive. I won't go into all the dishes we ordered (there was a lot) but wanted to call out my favorites: - sea bass ceviche served with plantain chips - sesame crusted seared rare albacore - baby back ribs that feel right off the bone Our out of town guests enjoyed it a lot and is a great setting for dinner.

Yelp
Ate here twice during our stay. The food and view is very good but the service is not. Very slow snd not attentive so prepare to take awhile for any meal. It is convenient if you are on site
google avatar

Jess A.

Yelp
Friend and I shared the chicken and the miso salmon. I think the salmon was mildly fishy but other than that the flavors were good. The sauce on the chicken and the couscous were fantastic and a very generous portion size. We dined at night and sat outside so our waiter, Alex, brought us blankets and made sure we were comfortable. At night it is a super cute spot to grab dinner (they have fire pits going and live music). Servers and hosts were super sweet and efficient.

Danielle B.

Yelp
We had the coziest time sitting by the fire and drinking wine. Our waitress, Lisa B, made us feel so welcomed and at home. She was so personable and is truly an asset to the property.

Yelp
Went here on my birthday and honestly the entire experience was made by our server, Joshua. The food was good but he was incredible and made the night so amazing and fun. Seriously give this man a raise
google avatar

Yelp
12/10 ambiance and atmosphere at The Grill at Torrey Pines ON the golf course but the food isn't great. Entrees are pricey. If I go back it will be for lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
This was our first meal at the Lodge during our 5-night stay. The views are great and the weather in June cool enough to enjoy eating outside. The course as most know, is a highlight of this property. The food (shrimp cocktail app/tri tip caesar/salmon caesar) was similar to other country club grill spaces. Nothing amazing, but fine. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall just OK.

Offred A.

Yelp
Wonderful service! Willow is amazing. He was so kind to our group of girls. Beautiful outdoor seating with a fire pit. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
We arrived a couple hours prior to our tee time at Torrey Pines, so wanted to carb up and get ready for an exciting day! The Grill at Torrey Pines has indoor and outdoor seating, with a pretty standard breakfast menu. Our server was very friendly and quick to serve us, the food was right on par. Exactly what we needed to shoot some low scores on a tough course! Best, Charlie
google avatar

Bonny K.

Yelp
Service was good. My Falafel sandwich not so much. Incredibly dry. Not tasting at all like any falafel I've had in my life, and even TJ's frozen is better. They switched it out for Calamari best I can say about that was eh. A big disappointment for sure.
google avatar

Myrna M.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place!! The atmosphere, the gardens, hotel, pool, indoor and outdoor dinning, the friendly professional staff and of course The excellent Food! Beautifully decorated this place is a must! The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the was a surcharge of 3% with a different nto a already expensive lunch
google avatar

Cari A.

Yelp
Got to eat lunch at the iconic Torrey Pines Golf Course. Made reservations in advance and our group was seated outdoors. Pros: -the grounds are beautiful -they decorate for Christmas -free valet or sec serve parking lot when eating Other: -our seat had one of those outdoor fire places. I personally loved the fire place, but there is not a lot of room to place your drinks or plates near the fire place which made it a bit inconvenient, especially when you are with a group
google avatar

Bobbie W.

Yelp
Ambiance is great! You get a view of the golf course if you sit outside and it's all heated. Service was good too! Food was ok. The rotisserie chicken sandwich was very dry and it didn't seem like it was rotisserie chicken. Felt like they just over baked a chicken breast and threw it on there. The chicken wings, roasted veggies and onion rings were good though. Will definitely be back to try other things.
google avatar

Fernando G.

Yelp
Went recently to the grill and sat at the bar. Was received by Nicholas the bartender and by far best experience ever. Made sure I wasn't missing anything and made himself available to give me top notch service. Never tried the transfusion drink before and based on his recommendation I have it a shot. Best most refreshing drink for this heat. If you go and see Nicholas as the bartender just know he will take care of you. Torrey pines good job on this one.
google avatar

Nadia G.

Yelp
The reason this is getting a three out of five is because the food was very average, although quite expensive, the service is very average, the restaurant has not been updated since it was built which was many, many years ago and it's very outdated and kind of rundown. For a hotel that boasts quality and luxury with prices to match, I think they could do better.
google avatar

Don W.

Yelp
Celebrated a birthday with friends tonight. The ambience, service and food were flawless. The view from the patio is gorgeous. This is one if our favorite places!
google avatar

Yelp
Great customer service. Beautiful view of the sunset on the patio and the food was fabulous

Yelp
We sat outside and enjoyed a nice evening. There are plenty of heat lamps available. Appetizers were great, we had the potato chips and the calamari. Both were tasty. The swordfish was just okay, not the greatest. The rigatoni with Italian sausage, butternut squash, in a smoked parmesan cream sauce was outstanding! Service was attentive. Prices were reasonable.

Sarah H.

Yelp
My friends and I come into the Grill on the reg, maybe once a week or so. We usually sit in the bar after a round of golf. It's the perfect place to undwind after 18 holes. ASK FOR NICK, he's the bartender. He's the best! He is always on top of all our random requests, and he makes our night every time--great service, always attentive, and so fun. He's like the fifth of our foursome, and the reason we keep coming back: Nick AND the onion dip. The food is great--burgers, pastas, wings. They have a great salad with a yummy citrusy tajin vinaigrette. And when we come in for date nights, we always get the root beer float for dessert. Five stars!! A great local spot, and not just for hotel guests! And that view!

Gayland S.

Yelp
We ate on the patio which is a pleasant place to enjoy the atmosphere. Food was very good, it menu seemed a little limited . Service was friendly and efficient.

Yelp
I'm not much of a golfer, just stopped in for a sandwich and a beer, and glad I did. I had the Reuben sandwich which was excellent, one of the best I've had. The fries that accompanied it were average, but hot and crispy. They have a nice selection of local craft beer. We sat in the bar, which is warm and inviting and much like the rest of the property craftsman style.reminds me of an old Irish pub. Great firepit seating outside. Attentive servers. I'll be back.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
Excellent food! Ambiance is casual for the Lodge, with lots fire pits and seating around them for cooler nights. The albacore schnitzel was a thick fresh albacore tuna steak, flash-fried with an excellent crust. The Hanger Steak was perfectly prepared. I wasn't the biggest fan of the sides on either plate. Too much food, too much starch, and too crowded of a presentation. I also did take out. The shrimp cocktail was a rock star good. The ceviche? The fish was very fresh, but the ingredients around it were very blah. Prices were not unreasonable for a five star resort. Service was excellent. It's Torrey Pines. Not a destination restaurant, but if you're on property, it's a good eat.

John W.

Yelp
Greatly enjoyed the atmosphere and patio dining of the Grill, especially after our recent round of golf at Torrey. The food was excellent as always and the bar menu very diverse and tasty. The service was 5-star as well. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a relaxing and delicious americana meal. If the weather is nice request a patio table; the ambiance and views are first-rate!

Yelp
The Grill at Torrey Pines in La Jolla offers a memorable dining experience, with a menu that features a range of dishes to suit all tastes. We tried the burger and chicken wings and were impressed with both. The burger was cooked to perfection and came with all the trimmings, while the chicken wings were juicy and flavorful. However, the prices are on the high side, with a burger costing $28. Despite the high prices, the quality of the food and the stunning views of the golf course and the ocean make The Grill at Torrey Pines a special dining destination. The staff were friendly and attentive, providing excellent service throughout our meal. The good thing is that parking is complimentary. Overall, The Grill at Torrey Pines is an excellent choice for a special occasion or a romantic dinner even though it's freezing cold dining in patio.

Yelp
My family and I decided to celebrate Mother's Day here today before my train had to leave for my train 2 and half hours later. Our family has been coming here as a tradition for years and the state of the service the past couple years is unrecognizable, worse than my slice. It's ridiculous how far this place has fallen. Do not recommend.

Yelp
The staff was lovely, Eddie and Ethan were very attentive and made it a fun experience!

Yelp
Dinner after we arrived at the Lodge. Very scenic location with great ambiance and attentive service. We were seated outside per our request and quickly noticed that the outdoor seating had the heat lamps turned on - full blast and we felt like we were under a kitchen broiler. Moved once. Another couple close by asked to be seated away from the heaters. I ordered the half chicken with couscous - chicken was done nicely but it was marred by thick coating of pungent mustard under the couscous and mixed into it.

Yelp
Nice menu with something for everyone. Yet not overwhelming. Great bar. Hanging with golfers and fun people. Great vibe yet relaxing after a game or meeting friends. Really nice people like Collin work here. Great accommodations at the lodge . I highly recommend the grill.

Yelp
SO YUMMY. The views are gorgeous of the golf course and the hotel is so pretty. We had a breakfast of a veggie omelet, waffle, coffee, and Bloody Mary's. Everything was absolutely delicious. The staff was extremely friendly, attentive, and helpful. A perfect place to stop on the way to the breweries in San Diego.

Yelp
The grill is solid and the service is always great. It's pricey but it's Torrey pines what are you gonna do. Burger is phenomenal and the chicken sandwich is solid! Good old fashioned and whisky selection and a few good craft beers on tap

Yelp
Amazing place with great food and atmosphere. However, what really made this experience worthy of this 5-star review was the staff/bartender. I had the pleasure of being served by a large, jovial, professional, and charismatic bartender named Nick. He was enthusiastic about his work, helpful with drink and menu selection, and attentive to my needs without being invasive. I stayed quite a while due to his welcoming attitude and was rewarded with an excellent dinner consisting of a crispy salmon entree. The burger also looked good, and I can't wait to try it next time I visit. Thank you, Nick, for such a memorable experience, and special thanks to the management and staff for going above and beyond.
