The 14 Best Lunch Spots Across San Francisco

"It’s not easy to get quality sushi quickly, but the Grubbies has managed to be a FiDi beacon for a quick bite of sashimi or unagi, served out of a takeout window on Sacramento Street. Go for the mini chef’s choice if you’ve got your mind set on sashimi or the nigiri combo. Orders come with a side of miso soup, perfect for warming up as the temperatures cool down." - Dianne de Guzman

The FiDi Lunch Guide - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The Grubbies is a window on Sacramento Street where you can buy sushi box lunches every day until they close or run out. It’s on the expensive side, but the mini chef’s choice ($15) comes with miso soup, five types of sashimi and salmon roe, a container of sushi rice, some pieces of nori, and a kale salad with citrus dressing. Get your food and find a sunny spot to sit down and eat. This is an especially good place to stop if you’re having a fashion emergency because your lunch will come wrapped in a colorful scarf. Yep, really." - Taylor Abrams, Jess Basser Sanders, Will Kamensky

Wow - probably one of the best sushi I have ever had in San Francisco... The fish was very fresh! I got “mini Omakase” (chef’s choice, small) for $15. The small box (3.5 in x 3.5 in x 2 in) does not look like a lot, but it comes with a small package of sushi rice, miso soup, and a package of aji-nori (Japanese flavored seaweed), wrapped in a small wrapping cloth. For me that was more than enough food, but if you have a big appetite, the regular omakase is $39. I will definitely go back there.

Google
I checked out this place while I was browsing on Ritual for my dinner take-out food. Actually I think I've seen lines in front of this place so I decided to order ahead of time. I ordered Mini Omakase and it took less than 10 minutes for it to get ready for pickup. They have that really lovely wrapping. Everything is just so neat and detailed. Sashimi is just fine. But I would recommend it to those who would like some fast but well prepared food to go. They close early by the way.

More than just a beautiful package for lunch! I got the Chef's Special which was well worth the $39. Wrapped in a gorgeous cloth, the special included an assortment of salmon, otoro, uni, scallops, tuna, salon roe, and other fish on a bed of cabbage and packed with sushi grade seasoned rice, miso soup, dried seaweed, soy sauce (in a cute fish container), and of course wasabi and ginger. I got lucky on my first try going there because they were sold out after me! Definitely worth going back for seconds and more!

The $30 Omakase bento box: delicious but had small sashimi pieces which were cut very thinly. Given this is a takeout counter with no places to sit, it is pricey. We are not big eaters but we were quite hungry afterwards.

Google
Very thoughtful packaging. Fish is fresh and price is fair for what you get. I ordered my line so I am suppose to skip the line for pick up. But since there is just one line people in the queue gave me dirty looks for not following the line. It would be better if they have a separate sign for pick up to avoid confusion.

I work in the financial district and have wanted to try this place forever - in the past I was hesitant because of the high prices but today I finally decided to give it a try! Unfortunately it was about the become the most expensive meal but also the worst meal I have had here. I got the miyazaki wagyu set, which was priced at $39 plus tax. The "wagyu" - I have had miyazaki wagyu before and the beef did NOT taste like wagyu. The outside was hard and the inside was chewy. The portion was nothing like the pictures and were mostly broken pieces. The pickled vegetables - 2 pieces of carrots, 2 sliced pickles, and 1 sliced mushroom. All of them were tiny. The rice - also tiny portions. Finished in maybe 6 bites. Lastly, the restaurant owner did not allow payment over credit card, saying their "systems have been down". Instead, he suggested payment over cash or to an individual Zelle account, which he included tax amount also. Will he be reporting this income? VERY suspicious.

Google
Fish is SUPER fresh!!!! They're quick, my order was ready before I finished paying! The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars is, it's really pricy for lunch. $15 for the Mini Omakase, but boy was it delicious!

Google
Very cool little hole-in-the-wall sushi / sashimi takeout serving superb food. I tried the Uni special, which came from Japan. The Uni was delicious, served on a bed of salmon roe. The rice and miso that accompanied were really great. Your takeout comes in a lovely bundle, wrapped in a decorated cloth you get to keep. The price makes it a bit of a treat (my meal was $35) but worth it because of the quality. Friendly and efficient service.

Yelp
Had the truffle salmon. Admittedly a little pricey for lunch and my pre packaged seaweed was a little stale. But salmon was fresh and tasted great, came out quick and rice was good. Decent gimmick

Yelp
Don't show up late then charge me per soy sauce packet when my lunch order is north of $30...I've loved supporting your business but you being cheap puts an awful taste in my mouth.

Yelp
I've walked by this place for so many years, but never tried it. It took a rainy day and me wanting something "new" but not far away to finally bring me here. It's a tiny window with a limited menu, that tends to run out fast. I really love the special touch of having your food wrapped in a fancy scarf instead of a disposable bag. 5 pc Omakase Nigiri & 1 Omakase Maki: So yes, $31 for lunch takeaway does seem a tad pricey, even for San Francisco. But this is seriously the best takeaway sushi I've ever had. Each nigiri piece was slightly seared while leaving the rest raw, for a nice flavor contrast. Also seemed like subtle seasoning (e.g. lime zest) on each piece. And the fish was so flavorful and tender and not "fishy" at all. The maki roll was cut into 4 large pieces that were really big mouthfuls. If I wasn't afraid of everything falling apart, I would have only eaten half at a time. But the fatty salmon and fatty avocado made it so indulgent. The miso soup was a larger than normal portion, good at cleansing your palate between sushi pieces. The edamame was kind of a small portion, but a nice little snack. At this price it can't be an everyday lunch, but it was quite a treat and so memorable. Curry Chicken Donburi: After having an amazing sushi experience, I was hopeful they'd excel at another favorite dish of mine. Sadly, their curry was nowhere near as good as nearby Muracci's. Even that Golden Curry box brand from the grocery store is better. Their curry lacked complexity. And the chicken was weird too, like it was cooked elsewhere then diced up and tossed in the curry. Chicken cooked in the curry generally is more tender and better permeated with flavor. And it seemed pretty overprice for $22 all-in, especially since the portion wasn't huge. Lesson learned, stick to the sushi.

Yelp
Grubbies is a great grab and go option if you work in fidi! Its a little takeout window that is open for a very small amount of time. They also close early if they sell out. The time might be wrong on yelp because i got there at 11:45am and it wasnt open yet. They opened around 12:10pm that day! A little inconvenient but i was willing to wait it out. I found the fish combos to be affordable and very fresh! The combos come with a side of rice, miso soup and a choice of side (i chose edamame). In the pictures on the menu the truffle salmon only looked like 5 pieces but when i opened my meal i was very pleased to see 10 pieces! I thought it was a steal and well worth the wait. I also got a scarf when they tied my food up. She was going to put my lunch in a normal brown bag but i saw the scarves on the side and asked if i could have one. The worker kindly said yes and tied mine up nicely! Love the little touch but wanted to note that you may need to ask specifically for it!

Yelp
Added this spot on my list to check out after seeing the colorful scarf packaging and yummy sashimi. A short walk from the Hilton, I ordered the mini chefs choice for $20. It came out to be $22 with tax. The fish is very fresh albeit pre-prepped. I got two pieces of walu, hamachi, salmon belly and one bluefin tuna. All pieces were super yummy! My favorite was the salmon (so so fatty) and walu! The order comes with a side of rice, seaweed and miso soup all of which was packed in a reusable branded tote! The only reason this didn't get a 5 star for me was how the soup wasn't completely closed and spilled out on the walk back to my hotel. It got quite messy. Otherwise, it was a great experience. Ideal spot for a quick lunch! I'm thinking about coming back tomorrow for the full chefs choice!

Yelp
Pricey but excellent takeout nigiri. High quality fish and comes with edamame and miso soup.

Yelp
This is a lovely hole-in-the-wall in San Francisco that is only open during lunch hours for pre-order when I went. Truffle Salmon Set (A) - The salmon here is fresh, vibrant, high quality, and very succulent. There's fresh juicy salmon on top, torched truffle oil salmon below, topped with some ikura as well. The entire bento also comes with seaweed, miso soup, rice and is overall a really cute and well put together set. My only complaint here was the rice was borderline raw, but everything else was really well done. Fruit Tea (A) - When purchased with a bento set, this fresh fruit tea is only an additional $3! The tea is light and refreshing, high quality with a lot of fresh fruit flavor -- definitely a great addition to the meal on par with top fruit tea shops for half the price! The only negative to my experience was that my order was 10 minutes late from the scheduled pick up, but the quality of food is worth the wait.

Yelp
Thank you Tik Tok for reminding me to check place out. What's nice it's only 6 min walk from my office, yay! Been working in the city now for almost 11 months and only come in twice a week where I usually bring home lunch because eating out in the city is hella expensive however I will treat myself out once or twice a month. Ordered the popular truffle salmon from their walk up window which came with a side of rice and miso soup, asked for seaweed sheets as well which was extra. I requested my lunch to be wrapped in a scarf and the lady running the to go window was happy to do it. The truffle salmon was fresh and delicious though it could have had a little bit more truffle flavor.

Yelp
A hole in the wall type of place in FiDi. They only do takeout so I just stopped by after work to pick up some dinner. We got the nigiri set and mini chef's choice, which comes with a bowl of rice, miso soup and option to choose between edamame and seaweed. I think the cuts are with reasonable price in the area. Will try to see if they have chirashi bowl next time since I didn't see it this time. You can also order from their website, Doordash if you can't go there. Packaging was cute and really thoughtful for the price you pay.

Yelp
Believe me I would be extremely impressed if fresh fish was flown in all the way from Tokyo daily to provide the chirashi bowls here and their similar closet operation on 2nd Street. However, I couldn't imagine they could sustain the economics of that operating model given how small their scale is. I'll just assume they get their fish closer to home and prepare the sashimi offsite. Regardless, for all the effort, the $39 Chef's Choice still seemed pricey for the portion provided (photo: http://bit.ly/2LStqRM). There was definitely good variety and an unmistakable freshness in flavor, and it's wrapped in a vintage-looking scarf that my late mom would have proudly worn with a jade brooch to her mah jong party (photo: http://bit.ly/2LTSg3W). I guess the initial hype when it opened has died down over the course of its three years in operation because I had no problem getting my order at a little past 6PM on a Wednesday. Perennially rude suits kept interrupting my order, but nothing new among the falsely entitled in the FiDi. FOOD - 4 stars...straight outta Tsukiji?....likely not but certainly fresh AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...it's just a closet SERVICE - 4 stars...courteous...what d'ya expect?...theyre my peeps TOTAL - 4 stars...you deserve it, you know it RELATED - In the mood for Japanese? Yelp
I was so excited to try this place as the presentation is so cute and appealing. The quality of the fish is not bad for the price. However, halfway through my meal I found a worm in one of the wasabi containers! I flipped it over and found a second worm. Now I feel disgusted and am very worried I'm going to get food poisoning from this meal. I'm all for supporting small businesses, but this is really unacceptable and a food safety hazard.

Yelp
Met up with my daughter K in San Francisco for lunch. I had bookmarked Grubbies for years and finally got a chance to try them out even though the prices have increased considerably. Grubbies is a food stand or should I say a cubicle serving prepackaged sashimi, bentos or donburi. They are famous for their omakase sashimi $39 and the mini omakase $15. Each order is individually packed in a colorful handkerchief that includes a generous rice container, miso soup, wasabi, pickled ginger, soy sauce, nori and utensils. The set is really nicely done. There are a few other choices of thing like salmon or tuna donburi and sometimes uni. The two locations sell out of items so don't go for a late lunch and expect the full menu availability. The two omakases, we ordered 4 different types of fish for the mini and 8 for the full omakase. The fish is very good, the portions are a bit small considering the price. Overall, if the prices were just a little less 5 stars. If you don't work or live in the area there is no where to grub your food, so make plans before hand. They take credit cards and the service is Japanese polite.

Yelp
I wanted so badly to love this place. I mean, an on-the-go omakase spot just half a block away from my office?! And the boxes were just too adorable! It was like heaven smiled down on me... and it really seemed like it did after the first few visits. The storefront is an adorable little nook on busy Sacramento street, and there's always a friendly employee standing outside who will gladly explain the menu. I loved the vibe, the concept, and the convenience. But then one day I ordered a box of the truffle salmon. Nothing new, I'd had it before. But what I hadn't had before was the food poisoning that followed. Thankfully, it wasn't the violent, debilitating, hugging-the-toilet kind of food poisoning. But by no means was it a pleasant experience, and the stomach cramps lasted for well over a week. A good friend of mine had also visited this location the same day, and she came down with the same symptoms (but hers lasted almost three weeks!). For what it's worth, her doctor told her it likely wasn't caused by bad fish, more likely the food was mishandled by someone with a foodborne illness. Let that thought fester.

Yelp
Grubbies has always been on my bucketlist to try, and I finally got to try it recently! I love how the meal is wrapped in a cute furoshiki, but it is disappointing how the meal uses so many plastic containers and produces a lot of waste. I got the salmon meal (half truffle and half regular salmon). I really enjoyed the truffle salmon. Fish tasted pretty fresh and soft. Meal felt a bit small to me and is a bit pricy, especially if you opt for the chef's choice. Worth trying, but I don't know if I would come again due to price tag.

Laura M.

Yelp
So sad about my lunch; I was so looking forward to it! Not sure what happened, the food has been excellent in the past but the nigiri combo which rings up to $28.25(!), had super gummy rice. It was so gummy that I couldn't eat the rest of the rolls because it was sticking to my mouth and I could barely swallow it. And to top it off I wasn't offered the cute scarf they wrap the sets with, just a plain old paper bag. Sad sack lunch

Yelp
Great quality and very tasty fish! Omakase for $35? A little more than I usually would pay...but whether it's worth it is completely up to you! I guess it's expected that lunch in the city is quite expensive. The cuts of fish aren't very large but there's a great assortment of fish. There's about 18 pieces if you count Ikura as one. Here's what came with my order, or at least the ones I recognized: Hamachi, Salmon, Albacore, Ankimo, Scallop, Ikura, Uni, Tako, Walu and White Tuna. It's all packed into this cute little wooden box, and there's even a salad beneath the fish. I think the salad was made with kale and cucumbers. I wasn't too fond of the dressing, it was too sour for my liking. The Omakase came with seaweed, rice and miso soup which is more than enough to feed one person for lunch. Another Yelp favorite was the Truffle Salmon, which I enjoyed more than the Omakase. When everyone's reviews were raving about it, I knew my friend and I had to try it. It was $18 and very flavorful. Some of the pieces were seared and you definitely notice the fragrant truffle flavor. I visited Grubbies right when they opened at 11 on the weekday and there was no line. I assume it gets pretty busy around noon when everyone is getting lunch. I'm interested in checking out the other items on the menu in the future. Maybe even try the super expensive Uni that all these foodie articles mentioned as being one of the most expensive Uni around. We shall see, again, really in desperate need of that sushi fund!
google avatar

Massimo M.

Yelp
WOW!! You have to try this place! It is expensive as heck - $15 to $200 for lunch - but it is worth the try. I had the cheapest thing on the menu, the Mini Chef's Selection or something similarly called, and it is a variety of sashimi with some wonderful fish eggs sprinkled on top, served on raw greens, a bowl of rice, miso soup with a few mushrooms, and a box of toasted sea weed. The food was very good, and super fresh - not a lot but hey. If you have the $35 to get the regular Chef's Selection go for it. This is not for every day consumption, unless you cashed out those stock options, so I doubt I will be back, but it is really worth trying.

Yelp
During COVID-19, we have been trying to get our sushi fix about once a month. A friend told us that the omakase from Grubbies was an extremely good value and the fish was very fresh so we decided to give it a try. We made an order online for the same day but it turns out that you have to call them despite the order going through. As a result we waited for our food only to have the owner call us to let us know that the delivery won't happen until the next day. So make sure to give a call after you ordered even if the payment is made. The Omakase was plenty of food for 2 people and we received 8 varieties of fish. They give you sushi rice, seaweed, drinks, and miso soup along with the sashimi. I really wished they had more uni in the omakase but will try the Sushi Special B next time for more Uni. Presentation as usual is on point! We always love to receive the pretty scarves from The Grubbies! Makes for a perfect accessory for a human or bandana for our doggy!

Yelp
Not for me. Got the chicken teriyaki. Thought it was made to order but everything is pre made. Texture and taste is similar to eating airplane food or microwaved food.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Truffle salmon was $15 for 10 pieces with rice to the side. Like a seal diving into the ocean for fish, I gulped down those 10 pieces of sliced fishes in 10 heartbeats! Every once in a while, I gotta splurge on myself for lunch, right? Well, this was my treat to myself. SPLURGE!
google avatar

Elaine H.

Yelp
I chose Grubbies out of all the chirashi places in the area as it seemed the most promising, but it was slightly disappointing. I was unaware that the sushi was prepackaged and pre-refrigerated before ordering. I went with the regular omakase, which had a lot of cuts I was not a huge fan of, and the price of the cuts were quite steep as many others have shared. I wish I had gotten just two of the mini-omakase tbh. The salmon was actually pretty good, but honestly could not taste any of the truffle oil. My favorite slices were the seared salmon as it had a smoky taste to it that practically melted in my mouth, without any of the fishy-ness. The sushi rice was also slightly weak and was mediocre flavor wise. - Omakase & salmon - I ordered the omakase and salmon for family. Like many others, the omakase is quite steep for what they give you. If I'm being frank with you, the sushi rice was a slight disappointment and I think the whole shabang was just alright. Overall, everything was just alright. I've had better, but the presentation was beautiful in how they put together all the cuts in a small container, and the yuzu soda was one of the best I've tried as well!

Ringo L.

Yelp
They have finally reopened!!! I decided to get my favorite Unagi Donburi and a Chicken Teriyaki Donburi for my dinner. I can't believe they are just $8.99 each at the heart of fidi. I'll be back to try the Chashu Fried Rice next time.
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
The quality of the sushi is top notch! Despite just being a window (which is part of the fun),. expect to pay a premium still. I definitely had some sticker shock, but felt it was mostly worth it. However, the amount of packaging / waste was nauseating. PLEASE shift to compostable packaging and find a way to use less of it! The furoshiki handkerchief is a fun touch, but also seems wasteful. How many of these do I need? Can I recycle them somehow for a discount or something?
google avatar

Sarina J.

Yelp
I think in terms of the price to quality, it's not worth it. While the food is really good, the packaging is gorgeous and the portions sizable for lunch, $45 for an omakase is acceptable if it's really fresh. I've had amazing omakase for less than that but a good try. I might want to try something else next time. They were out of the uni dishes and there was only a small sliver in the omakase and it wasn't great. My friend loved the truffle salmon though!
google avatar

Stella J.

Yelp
I hardly ever go to fidi but when I do it's usually for food. It was my friends bday and she had heard so much about grubbies $30 omakase we had to go and try it out. Other than omakase they do offer other bowls such as a truffle salmon option, toro and uni bowl. Too many options, I really couldn't decide so I settled for omakase since I'll probably be back in the future. Omakase was actually decent for the price. You do get several pieces of fish hand picked by the chef. It included uni, tako, salmon, ahi tuna and another fish I don't recall. The weird part was how the pieces weren't all the same size. One piece of salmon was a larger cut than another one. They also gave a large thing of rice, which wasn't really necessary since you wouldn't finish it all. Overall, decent quality for take-out only. I would probably come back again to try the toro and the truffle salmon... or if I feel like splurging I'll try their Japanese uni as well. Hopefully it will come close to japan. They also only sell 50 orders of each so do try to come early if possible! Total for 1: $30
google avatar

Laura Y.

Yelp
Such a cute little to-go sashimi place! I love the fact that they wrap the food in a little scarf: adorable and eco friendly The sushi was pretty good, especially the salmon + seared fish in the Omakase. Didn't look like a lot of food but was quite filling actually! You can take the food and go across the street to the second floor of the building and there's a public eating area.
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
This place is terrible... I only came upon recommendation of a friend who came during their grand opening. I did come for dinner, so yes, their omakase and most all other things on the menu were sold out. But, the toro and the salmon set I ordered could still at least come with more than 4 pieces for the price they were priced at. Also, the kale under the fish was the weirdest touch...no sauce and 2 bites of wakame for seasoning. I'm confused. Maybe I should come for lunch next time - but - do I really want to spend $70 on lunch..? Why is it so expensive if there's not even a place to sit after you order? Na. Just nah.
google avatar

Joanne Y.

Yelp
If you're looking for a fresh chirashi bowl, grubbies is the way to go! Just be aware that this isn't a sit down place, so find a spot nearby where you can sit down and enjoy your delicious meal, I recommend directly across the street inside the embarcadero building. The first time I came here (around 1230pm), they ran out of all their chirashi bowls so instead I ordered their truffle salmon bowl, which was still super good! But the other reviews and tips are right when they say that you need to get here 30 mins to an hour after they open if you want their popular chirashi bowl. During my second trip here, I finally got the chance to try their infamous chefs selection chirashi bowl ($30). This bowl includes a wide variety of SUPER FRESH fish including salmon belly, regular salmon, seared salmon, uni, hamachi, negitoro, tuna, scallops, etc. it's definitely worth the price for the quantity and quality you're getting. The fish is served in a separate container than the rice, therefore the rice doesn't make your fish are gross and warm. And as you all know by now, your meal comes with cute little fish soy sauce containers. The container that your fish is packed in, whether it be the chirashi bowl or the salmon bowl, is totally reusable and super adorbs. Planning to come back here again in a few weeks for that yummy chirashi again!

Yelp
Mini Omakase $15 Comes with miso soup, sushi rice, pack of seasoned seaweed, and a selection of fish. Fish quality was surprisingly good, 3.5-4 stars. Sushi rice was well made and flavor well balanced. Not only does the meal set come with a little bit of all the essentials, it comes wrapped up in a handkerchief instead of a plastic bag. What a neat little lunch spot.

Yelp
3.5 STARS Hey, wanna know how a $200 Uni Don tastes like? *Raises hand* Will cherubs sing upon biting into the sweet briny, foie gras of the sea? Will it make me fart rainbows? Too bad I will never know because I couldn't find 7 saps to go in with me so we can go eightsies for one lone $200 Uni Don. Just like everyone in line, I succumbed to the hype from a Hoodline article about a new sushi take-out window in the FiDi (across from The Melt in Embarcadero 1): http://bit.ly/2fgRRHL. The Grubbies quietly opened less than 2 weeks ago and serves a handful of chirashi bowls: Maguro ($23), Truffled Salmon ($15), Negitoro, minced toro w/ green onions ($24), Omakase, Chef's Choice ($28), and Uni ($60-$200 depending on source). Everything is prepared off-site, packed in bamboo steamers, and then dropped off to the take-out window so they have very limited quantities. Albertino M. gave me a heads up that they sold out most of their items by 11:30 am so get there at 11 am until the hype dies down. No drinks so plan accordingly (Walgreens is down the block). I love Uni but $200 is waaayyyy out of my budget for lunch with no seating. Plus, it seems highly inflated. I googled and the average market price of Uni (whole tray) sourced from Japan is USD33-66: http://bit.ly/2f8tZXs. Who knows, maybe it's sourced from the depths of the unicorn seas in Japan? If any ballers takes the plunge, I would love to hear if it's worth it. My friend and I each ordered the Omakase - Chef's Choice Chirashi ($28) and shared the Truffle Salmon ($15):http://bit.ly/2fgYkCi. Total was $71 (prices included tax). Cc's accepted. The cashier was neither friendly or rude...just straightforward - take your order, you pay, and he hands you your bag. The line moves rather quickly since he basically just packs your order. There's no seating but there's plenty of public tables for use in one of the four Embarcadero centers across the street. BE CAREFUL when unwrapping the saran wrap from the bamboo steamer. The steamer is not sturdy. When I was holding it with one hand, the top nearly toppled off with the entire contents of the steamer. Do it nice and slow, and with two hands (no pun intended). The Omakase Chirashi comes with 2 slices of the following (16-17 slices total): http://bit.ly/2eHxWOo *Maguro (Tuna) *Kunsei Sake (Smoked Salmon) *Hotate (Scallop) *Albacore *Hamachi (Yellowtail) *Sake (Salmon) *Uni (one piece only) *Hirame? (Fluke) *Toro (Fatty Tuna) Most of the fish was fresh and decent quality (mid-tier) but they were cut way too thick and chunky for my liking, like Cantonese-style sashimi. It's fine if you like a big bang for your buck, but the whole point of enjoying good sashimi is so you can taste the delicate texture of the fish. You shouldn't have to put in a lot of effort in chewing just to swallow (again, no pun intended). I was looking forward to the toro but it was in thick chucks so it just killed the luxurious buttery texture. The uni was folded into the steamer and when I picked it up with my chopsticks, I noticed the bottom portion was black. Usually oxidized uni turns brown so not sure why it was black. The biggest disappointment came with the rice. You can't have a solid bowl of chirashi without perfectly cooked seasoned rice. Just like you can't have a solid sandwich without fresh bread. Not sure when the rice was pre-packed but it was dry, hard, and wasn't seasoned with the usual vinegar, sugar, salt, etc. The Truffled Salmon was a good value. You get 10 thick slices of salmon for $15: http://bit.ly/2eH64gk. The truffle flavor is very subtle. But again, the salmon is just cut too thick to enjoy the natural butteryness. It was garnished with shoyu jelly (?) and unseasoned wakame. Overall, I thought the The Grubbies was decent but more quantity over quality. But, that's just me. If you're looking for a solid bowl of chirashi that has properly sliced sashimi, sushi rice, and a fantastic value, I have yet to find any place to beat Elephant Sushi Golden Gate: http://bit.ly/2dY1uZG. I know The Grubbies just opened but that rice really killed it for me so 3.5 stars rounded down.

Yelp
I don't know if I was more excited to eat or take a picture of the beautifully arranged fish in a cute dim sum looking container. Good news, it's as good as it looks! My boyfriend and I were the first ones in line at 10:50am (lol) since we heard that there are limited quantities every day. We ordered two omakases and a truffle salmon. All the fish were melt-in-your-mouth fresh and the truffle salmon was sooooo delicious. We were disappointed that we didn't get any scallops in our omakase, but I'm assuming the fish changes every day since it's the "chef's choice". The only downside is that it's probably the most expensive lunch I've ever had at $75 and the omakase isn't worth $30 imo, but it was super yummy and I regret nothing! I'll stick to the more affordable but equally delicious truffle salmon chirashi next time. +1 star for the cute fish shaped soy sauce!!!

Yelp
The Grubbies opened so quietly, I'm so glad I heard about it through a friend before the lines get ridiculous. Limited quantities but it is $28 for the omakase lunch set. It was SO CUTE and came in a bamboo container but there was so much packaging. I wish they would reuse the bamboo containers they give out...because I didn't want to throw mine away, but I also don't know what to do with it. Anyway, we got there at 11:15am to beat the lunch crowd. There was already a line but they were taking orders already. 3 of us all opted for the $28 omakase. The pieces of fish are smaller than nigiri pieces but there was plenty of fish in there to make you full. They give you a container of rice on the side as well as soy sauce (in a cute fish container) and ginger/wasabi. A splurge in Fidi but a great lunch choice to try when you're craving a chirashi bowl. They also have less expensive choices like truffle salmon ($15) and mini omakases and specials of the day.

Yelp
Ever since I saw pictures from The Grubbies pop up on my Yelp newsfeed, I knew I wanted to come here for lunch. Finally got the chance to try recently and it was pretty good! Met up with a friend at The Grubbies around 11:30, since I knew they had limited quantities of each type of sushi bowl. When we got in line, I was surprised to see that the tuna bowl ($23) was already sold out. Luckily for us, we were interested in their truffle salmon bowl ($15), so we each got one. The line moved fairly quickly and the actual ordering process was very quick, as there is someone standing outside taking your order and then a second person inside who accepts your payment. To be clear, this is purely a takeout spot, so make sure you know that before coming here. It was a bit chilly outside the day we came, so we opted to head to a nearby cafeteria to eat there. As for the salmon bowl itself, I wasn't too impressed with the quality of the rice. Probably because these bowls are prepped early in the morning, but by the time we actually ate them, the rice had cooled down and was kinda dry. I can't complain about the fish though; the salmon was fresh and delicious and definitely the best part of the meal. Oh and I can't get over the adorable fish-shaped soy sauce containers!

Yelp
I've heard about this place for many months, and finally got around to trying it out earlier this week!! I believe before Grubbies, this shop was some sort of empanada shop or something like that. Now it sells delicious assorted chirashi bowls! Keep your "order numbers" because they're doing a monthly raffle as well (starting March 2017!). I ordered the truffle salmon because I prefer salmon over tuna - I got it to go and ended up enjoying it at home while watching Netflix in my PJ's. The truffle refers to the seared salmon portion - this truffle salmon bowl is half seared truffle salmon, half normal salmon. The bowl comes with rice, and is larger than a mini Omakase don. I really enjoyed my salmon and would come here every day if I could! It ended up being $15 flat (they do accept credit card), and I think next time I will try the uni/scallop or Omakase bowl!!!

Yelp
Good food and packaging. The lady who was at the front was very helpful. Really enjoyed the tiny sou sauce container hehe

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised by this new sushi stand...I was originally looking for the pot pie place that used to be here. Anyway, I got the mini uni bowl and mini chef's choice plate to go. This is a food stand so it is pretty much just grab and go. The food was fresh and presented in cute packaging. It was a little pricy but worth it if you need some good fresh sushi! I'll be back! 5 stars for good customer service and delicious food! I even ate the decorative greens...

Yelp
Their packaging just gets cuter and cuter! We ordered the Chefs Choice which had a variety of fresh, delicious fish. It also came with rice, miso soup, and a package of seaweed. Pricey lunch, but so SO good :)

Yelp
This place is a really cute hole-in-the-wall shop! Prices are a bit high though for what they are. I can't blame them though because.. well that's every foodie place in San Francisco! They really are just a hole in the wall though with the sweetest woman standing in the front to help you with your order!! She was oh so very sweet and made the entire experience ordering that much more enjoyable. They have all sorts of fresh sushi to order from. My boyfriend and I shared the chirashi! Don't get me wrong, it was delicious.. but definitely not $30 worth delicious unfortunately. Also, their soy sauce fish containers are super duper kawaii!~ Aaaaah!! So cute! So cute!

Yelp
This location appears to be at least temporarily closed as of 6/22/2021. It has not been open for quite awhile.

Yelp
Just finished my mini omakase! A bit late but finally got to try this place out! It's fairly close to the office and so glad I stopped by. Barely a line at 11:30AM and got to order within minutes. Everyone is so friendly here! Ordered the mini omakase (comes with rice). Pretty good selection and it's so fresh! The only thing is the kale. It's hard to chew through raw kale. I ended up dipping it in soy sauce (don't judge!) I fell in love with the rice lol I would definitely come back to try other items. Pretty decently priced for the freshness of the food. Remember to stop by early to beat the crowd. All items have a limited quantity!

Yelp
I got the truffled salmon dish for lunch ($15). The fish was very fresh but I found the pieces small and pretty average in texture. It definitely met a craving and with so much rice (which I didn't finish). It was not a fully balanced meal though. Dish details: The dish comes with a large container of vinaigered rice which the employee microwaved quickly before service. Underneath the fish was a bed of chopped kale (not really edible with hard stems and all) and a small pile of seaweed salad (wakame). There were 6-8 slices of fish, half of which were lightly seared with the scent of truffle oil.

Yelp
Went here not knowing anything about it, and boy was I in for a surprise! I assumed it would be a small shop, but there isn't anything except for the order counter. The Bento's are beautifully wrapped (came wrapped in a scarf) and the fish is so fresh. I came here for lunch, and then came back for Dinner the same day it was so good! The fish was really fresh, and flown in daily from Japan. Honestly the quality is nearly unmatched (most places have a few fresh but here everything was immaculate!). The scallops used were 2-3 bite scallops, not sliced small pieces it was the whole whopping thing! Amazing experience, and whenever I am in the Financial District its definitely on my radar. Additional Tip: If you are taking Bart/Caltrain home, go to the Walgreens a few blocks away for ice if you don't have a freezer bag.

Yelp
Stopped here shortly after 11:00 to avoid the possibility of any lines. With only 50/day you got to come early. I ordered the omakase ($30) and brought it back to my office since they don't have any seating. Rice was so perfect. Love the exploding rice vinegar taste. The fish was also very fresh and just melted in my mouth. Good size cuts as well.

Yelp
Came by on Friday for lunch and I was definitely intrigued by their stall/store front. It was so cute and aesthetic, I loved it. There wasn't too bad of a line when I got there so I was able to order in no time. They open at 11AM, and with our arrival being at 11:30AM, there were already 4 items marked "sold out" of out the 7 things that you could order from. My friends and I had all opted for the full-sized omakase with is chef's choice of 18 pieces of fresh fish prepared over some veggies. It comes with soup, soysauce in a cute fish container, really good wasabi and your choice of Japanese or Korean seaweed. The worker wraps up your order in your choice of colored handkerchief (there was blue, purple and pink). Let's get to the food review now: The fish was SO fresh. One whiff and one bite later.. I was obsessed. When I initially saw the size of the omakase box, I was a bit concerned that I'd still be hungry. However, when I was almost done with my food, I was already beyond full. Pro tip: There's no seating area but you could walk a block or two down and sit at the Embarcadero shopping area. Overall, 10/10 would recommend :)

Yelp
I love The Grubbies! I always recommend this place to other people when they're craving Japanese food or sushi. The storefront is impressive with a great wooden finish. The staff are friendly and the fish they prepare is flown in from Japan daily. I've been going to The Grubbies before the scarf bento days. I've tried the Truffle Salmon and the Chef's Choice Omakase. I usually want to try the Uni or the Toro but end up ordering the salmon because it's so tasty and always a favorite for me. Truffle salmon comes with 6 pieces with half of them being raw and seared respectively. Omakase is fun and a great way to try different pieces at a fairly affordable price. The bento will always include a scarf, a snack (I got panda snacks), rice, and miso soup with your entree. Orders here are pretty pricey but...it's sushi. You pay for the quality that you receive. Definitely going back!

Yelp
Can only vouch for the salmon sashimi ($18) but OMG presentation alone already made me love this place. This little lunch box came wrapped in a Hermes-looking handkerchief lol! Upon delicately unwrapping the Hermes, I marveled at an amazing meal. Everything was top-notch, even the soy sauce, which came in a cute plastic fish. The salmon was in a wooden box on top of a bed of raw kale. The salmon, which was half seared half raw, melted with every bite :'). It came sprinkled with a good amount of fish roe that was perfectly salty and POPPED with satisfaction. The meal was complete with a side of seaweed strips and miso soup. TOTALLY worth $18! Dying to come back here to try the toro as it's always sold out by the time I try to order! Literally a hole in the wall so take-out only.

Yelp
This place is literally a hole in the wall. The food was delicious but the price is a bit steep but it's totally understandable since it's in the downtown area. I ordered the toro tuna which was $28. I would say it's an okay price for what they give you. It was neatly packaged To go. They had it wrapped in a silk scarf with a box of seaweed, sushi rice and miso soup. It was a very japanese style look for the food. Food ordered: Toro Tuna - A The fish is def fresh, the presentation was well presented it's a cute and perfect to go packaging. You can take it with you for a picnic, back to work, or sit a a bench to eat. I would def eat here again but not too often since it's pretty pricy.

Yelp
I love work from home days. Not only do I get to stay in bed all day (if I want), I also get to have my staple WFH lunch - The Grubbies!! $30 seems a bit excessive for lunch but you know I had to do it one time for the omakase chirashi. I thought it was pretty good with a nice variety of stuff (fish, ankimo, hotate, etc.), but for the steep price tag I didn't think it was that worth it. The truffle salmon for $15 is where it's atttt. It's amazing. That sear on the truffle salmon, ufghhh. No seating here but you could always take a short walk to the Embarcadero center and sit at their outdoor tables. I'm glad I don't normally work near here because there's a 99% chance you'd find me at this window every day.
