The Halal Guys Review - Gold Coast - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Halal Guys is notorious for being one of the most famous But like all good things in life somebody saw an opportunity to franchise it and that’s exactly what they did. Good for them, and we hope it works out, but whether it’s reasonable or not we feel different about a place knowing it’ll end up being a large corporate chain instead of a simple food cart on the street. While the Chicago version isn’t a food cart, it’s not much more. Halal Guys is a tiny little storefront and for the most part it’s a Serious Take-Out Operation. You’re coming for a cheap platter or pita sandwich with lamb, chicken, or falafel, and you’re going to cover it all in their famous “white” sauce. We’ve got some news about the white sauce though, especially for our east coast Halal Guys crazed friends. This might feel a little like telling kids Santa Claus doesn’t exist, but that stuff is basically mayonnaise infused ranch. And here in the Midwest, drenching food in ranch is one of our favorite pastimes. We’re not hating, because the white sauce is no doubt good, but it’s not an innovative concept. That said, the gyro meat is excellent and the chicken is good, and when you mix it all together with lettuce, rice, simple veggies, pita, and of course the white sauce, it’s a great, cheap meal. Hala guys is also open until 4am on the weekends. And the only thing better than greasy meat loaded up with ranch-like dressing is greasy meat loaded with ranch-like dressing after a night of drinking on the town." - Sam Faye

The Halal Guys Review - Midtown - New York - The Infatuation

"Halal Guys is so notorious that they’ve had to sue impersonator businesses trying to cash in on their street cred. Which, incidentally, only gives them more street cred. The original carts in Midtown have been around since 1990, and to this day it’s somewhat required that all meat-eating New Yorkers order the cart’s halal chicken or lamb over rice platters every so often. Not just because it’s famous, but because it’s delicious, filling, and costs $6. Whichever protein you choose (we like chicken), it’s imperative you nod and smile when the cart workers ask about the addition of white sauce, a slightly-sour yogurt dressing that’s as much of a star as the meat itself. Don’t get too cocky with their bright red hot sauce, its spicy punch will easily overpower the other flavors of your lunch." - Hannah Albertine

Google
This was my first time having a gyro, my son’s as well. It was absolutely PHENOMENAL! The guy who made our food was so kind. I asked him to make mine the way he likes his because I had no idea what to order! Awesome vibe dining in! I’ll probably never be back in Chicago but I’m so glad I stopped here on our first night of vacation!

Google
First time ever coming here and I felt welcomed as soon I entered.. Didn't know what to order asked for what their best dish was and he referred me to the combo platter... OMG when I say it was loaded for it to be a small I can only imagine what a large looks like. The meat was so flavorful and that white sauce was definitely a hit.. I will be returning.. thank u so much for the experience.. PS I said I was ordering to go but the way it smelled I never made it out the door🤣 Aw yeah and very reasonable price as well literally a meal for a lil under 14$

Google
I loved the food was great customer service with a smile. Check it out if you're in downtown Chicago on Wabash.

Google
Beef and chicken regular platter combo was great for lunch. Line moved quickly and to-go packaging perfect for my walk back to the office. Will be returning.

Google
Checked out The Halal Guys recently and overall, pretty good! The staff was chill friendly, easygoing, and made the whole ordering process smooth. Definitely appreciated the good vibes.

Google
Solid spot for a quick, tasty bite in the Loop. I grabbed the regular combo platter, which comes with chicken and gyro meat over rice, plus pita and salad. Portion's generous—definitely enough to fill you up. The white sauce is a must, and if you're into heat, the hot sauce packs a punch. Service is quick, and the place is clean. Only knock is the price—it’s a bit steep for fast food, but the quality and convenience make it worth it.

Google
OMG THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. you need to come try this. We had this in Michigan but they closed it down and this one in Chicago is great good area too right in downtown the sauce is so good this food is addictive u need this in your life I’m looking forward for the next visit.

Google
First time visiting this location, the servers were very kind. Let me sample some items before purchasing and offered their opinion. Will return to try the chicken.

Yelp
my dad and i stopped here before a concert for a quick bite and it hit the spot! food was AMAZING, portions were generous. small was perfect size for me, regular was good for my dad. seriously no changes. as for service, the workers were super nice and even brought stuff we asked for to our table. store was clean and well kept. only thing was area seemed a little testy- kinda weird crowd in and around. a homeless man did come in and try to talk to me/stand really close to me asking for money. but, that didn't bother me much- didn't take away from the amazing food and time with my dad!

Yelp
The first food I ever tried when I came to United States was halal guys falafel platter at Times square, NY and I was fascinated how people were in queue for so long just to have it. I love the authenticity and simplicity of the flavours and I am so glad i can enjoy it in Chicago as well with the same taste. This outlet is more of a quick dine-in space so the ambiance is definitely not the highlight here. But the food is worth it, caution with the hot sauce!!!!
google avatar

M. D.

Yelp
I first tried Halal Guys in New York and was thrilled to hear they were coming to Chicago a few years ago. This place never disappoints. If you're a meat lover, I highly recommend the gyro, but the falafel is also delicious for vegetarians.
google avatar

Sanjay G.

Yelp
It is one of my favorite food joints and I come from the NY-NJ area (famous Adele and halal food). I picked up my chicken over rice, the only thing I was disappointed with was the big chunk pieces of chicken in my dish. Strict No ...!! Pieces should be small and soft. never seen those big pieces in my chicken over rice or in Gyro. other than that - it was good. they have 2 options, small and regular. I thought small would not be sufficient for me but don't make it fool you - it's a good portion. Regular was too much for me and I ended up throwing some.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
I had their first stand near my office at work in nyc. The line would go a block long sometimes. I was happy to see their brick and mortar restaurants when I moved to Chicago. Pretty standard fast food format. The food is pretty consistent and so are the sauces. I go for lamb and rice. Be cautious with the hot sauce, it's hot!

Sonny L.

Yelp
Very good I was glad I caught them b4 they closed but I was impressed it was definitely the only restaurant in walking distance worth eating
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
The Halal Guys (and gal) were fast, friendly and delivered fresh-tasting food. I liked it! The gyro beef was excellent and the tahini sauce capped it off. The veggies all had a great, fresh taste. The crinkle fries were excellent! We were in and out in no time.
google avatar

Sandeep D.

Yelp
This is average fare. I like the staff, friendly and helpful. The restaurant itself does not seem very inviting and clean.
google avatar

Rajiv A.

Yelp
The food served here to be honest, is not too bad. Chicken Over Rice or even falafel over rice is a staple in New York and all Halal Guys Chain locations. Every time I eat at a Halal Guys, It takes me back to New York. The meat was a little over cooked and parts were hard but I think it's because I went there just after lunch time and I got the end of the meat pot. On a usual occasion though, The food here is tremendous with a five star. The service was friendly though they kind of forgot to give me my side. But it's okay, they were busy. Ambiance wise, well it's downtown Chicago and the location was tiny so not very good, though I would take the food to go and sit by the lake ( not far from the location ) and eat there.
google avatar

Ash S.

Yelp
Over rated. Get the red sauce on the side Nescafé it can be really spicey. Better to order with door dash or pick up than sit there and eat due to cleanliness. Quick and easy service.
google avatar

Yupeng L.

Yelp
Great tasting food, but be warned, the red sauce is INCREDIBLY spicy. I normally handle spicy pretty well, but I admit I went overboard with the red sauce and my toilet paid the price.
google avatar

Gary H.

Yelp
The chicken sandwich is amazing, both for flavor and value. The guys behind the counter are efficient and ready to serve. The place is clean, but has a somewhat odd layout. There were only 5 is us in line at lunch time, but there might as well have been 15 because the narrow space lacks room to turn around. I was reminded of some delis in NYC -- no shoving, but close. Perhaps a sign or tape on floor could help organize customers better. Still, a delicious value. I'll be back.
google avatar

Collin S.

Yelp
The staff at The Halal Guys are always very friendly and helpful. I especially enjoy the chicken Sharma with the red and white sauce mixed together with all the toppings.
google avatar

Alec L.

Yelp
Overall a pretty good bowl. The lamb is the highlight of the meal with lots of flavor. I'm not crazy about the rest of the toppings, but they weren't bad. We tried the hot sauce on the side, it was more spicy than flavorful, so be careful. The sauce was good, and we wish we ordered extra. Friendly staff and good atmosphere!
google avatar

Raj D.

Yelp
This location of Halal Guys disappointed me a bit - I've been to other locations over the years and have normally had great experiences in the past. On this visit, the food just did not taste as fresh or flavorful. I ordered a vegetarian falafel bowl and it just wasn't as good as the ones I've had previously. On the bright side, the staff was friendly and the service was quick. I appreciated their hospitality. Also as always, the sauces were incredible!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Great service and the food is great as expected. I like the beef platter, which is large enough for two meals. They're very generous with the sauce, but make sure to remember to use your rewards account yourself since they will not prompt you for them. If you sign up for an account, you get a free drink and side.

Yelp
While in Chicago, I like to find the best places to eat. Believe it or not this place wasn't even originally where we intended to eat, but on a whim walking by we popped in. It's a tiny, but busy little joint. We tried a chicken and steak wrap and oh my god, it was heaven! We loved this place, sent photos to envious friends, and raved about it the rest of our day trip. There's no pizazz to the decor, but nonetheless it was a great dining experience. Its not really a detraction to the restaurant itself, but we did have a very uncomfortable interaction with a homeless gentleman who proceeded to grab at and make salacious comments towards my spouse once he found out we weren't carrying any cash. Normally we are sympathetic to their situation, but this gentleman was rather aggressive, and it made entering the restaurant difficult.
google avatar

Ethan P.

Yelp
Sadly this is one of the lowest stars I've ever given. Did Uber Eats tonight, below is the results: - 3 items missing - other items made with wrong ingredients - sauces and extras missing - ball of lint/hair in the fries Was very disappointed in what we received. Have eaten lots of halal food over the years - this was the lowest quality. (Babaganoush was good). Hate to rate a restaurant low. But I will not be eating here again.
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat whenever I'm in the East coast. I was surprised to see a Halal Guys in Chi-town. We stopped by here to grab a quick bite. The line wasn't long and the service was fast. I ordered the combo chicken and beef plate. The chicken was a little runny. I'll just have to remember not to order any chicken in my plate next time. The dining area was a bit dirty and so was the bathroom. I'm just happy that they had a bathroom. To all the tourists, around the corner from this location is The Chicago Theatre and lot of shopping. Good place to grab a quick bite whenever you're hungry.
google avatar

Manleen R.

Yelp
Yummy food to choose from! Falafel is really the only vegitarian option. The food is delicious, and they are definitely generous with the yummy sauces. The location is super central to everything in the city. The staff is friendly, and accommodating! The vibe is a typical Halal Guys vibe -- food, and sitting. They have a yummy cheesecake baklava which is so delicious, and unique!
google avatar

Landon M.

Yelp
Overall a pretty good experience. I went in with very few expectations as I had never heard of the store before. I was served very quickly even with a long line. Their sauce was really good. They had someone going around giving people extra sauce if they wanted it. Customer service was really good for this restaurant. Facilities were fairly clean. The only thing I am taking a star off for is my overall satisfaction with the food. Most of the food was good but some of the chicken was very chewy or abnormally crunchy and I did not like that. Besides that issue, overall the food was good, the staff was friendly, the food was decently priced and the store was clean.
google avatar

Timothy N.

Yelp
This place is a nice quick meal away from a Broadway show at James M. Nederlander Theatre. A quick location with good value portion for a very quick meal. The place is loaded with nicer dine in place but a inexpensive location is a good staple for everyone.
google avatar

L O.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat in the Chicago Loop just made it unaffordable to eat there. The food is literally THE BEST, but at $15.00 for a regular chicken/beef combo this puts it out of range for many people. The price was $11.99 in Nov. of 2022, and 6 months later it's increased by $2. $15 for a fast food lunch is too much. Inflation has gone DOWN since last year, so that can't be the reason. Sad.
google avatar

Thuy Dan T.

Yelp
If I am ever in need of some hefty comfort food that will last lunch and dinner, I look to Halal Guys! Ordered via Yelp and it was a smooth ordering/delivery process. Based on what app you're ordering from, different options come up. For the Yelp ordering, the combo platter was an option which is my favorite! I also get the gyro/chicken combo with everything. If you want some extra veggies, add in the comments to add chopped onions and green peppers (for free). They also give a nice crunch to the whole palette. The order came quickly after and was still hot. The gyro/chicken was tender, not dry at all. The white sauce really glues the whole platter together. I force myself to only stick to one packet, but this location was nice enough to give us an extra without charge (or asking!). I will save it for some fries later. Lastly, spice up your life with the hot sauce. It looks small, but does it pack a spicy punch! I have a high spice tolerance and love it.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
So many things irritated me: the nickel-and-diming and the lack of variety in sandwich ingredients (if you've tried falafel street vendors or restaurants in Lebanon or Israel, Halal Guys will seem minimalist and boring). The platters are served with a few sliced of cold pita bread and NO HUMMUS. Hummus is $1.50 extra. Chicken and beef shawarmas are referred to here as gyros (seriously?!). A pocket pita is $1.00 extra. The don't give out small cups for water. Tip: Don't order the "large" sized platters; there's virtually no difference between portions of the regular and large.
google avatar

Theresa M.

Yelp
This is the worst halal guys I've ever been to. Rude service and bland food. What a waste of money.
google avatar

Aaliyah L.

Yelp
I don't come here often but when I do, I enjoy my meal every time. The portions are huge but the fries are usually pretty salty and I feel like the meat could be kept hotter. I usually get the chicken pita and fries...and of course the white sauce and the extra hot sauce!
google avatar

Shirley H.

Yelp
So excited that I finally got to have my first Halal Guys experience after hearing about them for years! Two words: FRESH, DELICIOUS I got the beef gyro rice platter with white sauce. I picked the perfect dish. I picked my new favorite dish. I picked the dish I will order every time I return in the future. 100/10 would recommend. I felt like I was eating very healthy (although I'm not sure I was...), so there you go, they got me to eat my veggies and everything on the platter. Pita bread - soft. Beef - soft/moist and flavorful and they did not skimp! Rice with veggies and white sauce - not boring and absolutely scrumptious. Quick and friendly service, quality casual food, taste buds longing for more? Check, check, and check! I wish we had The Halal Guys in Utah!

Andrea R.

Yelp
Delicious. Nutritious. Fast. And you can easily customize your meal. I ordered online ahead if time then picked up in time to make my train. Perfect.
google avatar

Kendall C.

Yelp
Food was pretty good for fast food. The inside has some seating. Food comes out pretty quickly minus French fries.
google avatar

Sara P.

Yelp
Gyro was soooo good!! Their sauce was perfect and the meat was freshly made and well seasoned.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Food is great and people are friendly. I'm not sure why they only have 3 stars. I went with four friends. We held up the line a little but they remained friendly and respectful. They took our orders fast. Made everything fresh and even checked on how everything was after we sat down after a little bit. It was a great experience. I would definitely go back. Great food and great people really do make a place!! 5 stars from me!!

Nilda G.

Yelp
This place got me so sick. I used the sauces the white sauce was horrible on my food and got sick right after. Just thinking about it makes my stomach turn. I have never eaten there again.

Carter E.

Yelp
I had the combo chicken and gyro bowl. Absolutely phenomenal and a massive portion for the price. This will become a regular lunch spot while at work.
google avatar

Louis P.

Yelp
A tasty and quick meal if you're in the neighborhood. Not sure why this place has such poor reviews, but it's a pretty straightforward dining experience... order your food at the counter and sit down and eat it. I ordered the chicken and beef sandwich and it was good! Best ever, no... but it was still pretty good. 4 stars!
google avatar

L L.

Yelp
I love their fantastic beef gyro sandwich which is equally delicious as those that I ate in NYC. Their spicy sauce has a great spicy kick so I recommend a single line of it paired with their white sauce. Service was good. One of these days, I will get around to trying their chicken gyro.
google avatar

Zeina E.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try out the Chicago Halal Guys ever since I tried the original in New York a few months ago, so I decided i'd pick some up for dinner after work. I walked over to their Wabash location and expected the line to be out the door like it was in New York (the line was basically wrapped around their cart), but there was no line at all and service was pretty quick. I was picking up dinner for my boyfriend and I, so we decided to try a plate and a sandwich so we can see what the better choice is. I had the chicken sandwich and my boyfriend had the regular gyro plate. The regular plate is huge, it could easily feed two people. If you're trying to watch what you eat, I'd suggest you go for the small plate. They fill it all the way to the top so it's plenty of food for one person. The meats are both delicious. I personally liked the gyro more. It was tender, delicious and got better after every bite. The chicken was okay, not as flavorful as the gyro, but still tasted okay. The rice was also really good, but my goodness that white sauce is to die for. I asked for extras because I knew we'd be wanting more. Service was quick and friendly. Knowing my boyfriend, I asked for more rice and the employee behind the counter was happy to add more, and I didn't even get charged for it. I'm happy there's a Halal Guys in Chicago. It's tasted very similar to the one in New York (not exactly the same, I'd definitely say the one in New York tasted better), but I mean nothing beats the original. It's still delicious though! ~ Till next time!
google avatar

Jonna N.

Yelp
FINALLY I tried out this place. I know. I know it's been here for quite sometime, but I rarely on Wabash where this place is situated. I'm glad I came in because it tasted super good! The white sauce (garlic tahini) was super flavorful. They sell them as pouches if you need your fix! The red suace was spicy though! I had to take a break from eating it. I like spicy food but I need to build a tolerance - lately I haven't been building that tolerance so the suace got me. It was good though. I'd get it again on the side and dip. I got a chicken sandwich. It smelled like the halal carts in New York. I was taken back to where I visited back in early December. I'd totally go again!
google avatar

Tiphany C.

Yelp
I like Roti way better I asked them not to put tomatoes on my food I absolutely hate them given a half of thinly sliced stale pita bread. I don't like my food at all the rice is orange but totally bland with warm lettuce on the side. It's a NO for me. I hate wasting my money n that's what this was an absolute waste for me Pt2 I was going to leave it be but now I tasted the falafel omg there so freaking hard how could u guys do this to me my lunch is absolutely ruined. I'm so disgusted right now n not to mention I have no pita bread Bc it was to hard to enjoy. Please stop serving food like this to customers I'm not a dog I'm a human being and like to eat good. I can't believe I wasted my lunch money and time on this joint. I didn't even see shawarma when placing my order. I don't feel this food is authentic at all. The people I saw smashing they must be hungry or just don't kno any better. Then to top it off it's hardly any meat like they topped the veggies off with meat. I tried to eat it but it's just disgusting to me. Dangit I want my money back to go to Roti. Should've stuck with my 1st mind it was so delicious there and I had to eat my humus the next day with pita chips Bc it was more than enough meat and rice that got me full. This sauce they have here in packages taste like mayonnaise. There spending all there money on marketing ..no spend it on bettering your food. I'm eating the hard falafel as I type Bc I dare not to finish this gyro and chicken plate . The falafels r so freaking hard they had to have cooked these babies the night before y are they so hard old and cold lord Jesus I hope I don't get sick.Find better Bc this is not it

Timothy L.

Yelp
The food and service are why you come here. Who needs ambience when the rest is so good! Awesome in NYC and everywhere else I've had it. Go heavy white sauce!

Amr T.

Yelp
Rude service -very discriminatory and manager/owner/franchisee supports it. I will boycott all of halal guys because of this one location. Not that they care but be aware walking in there of their nasty attitude. Owner affirmed to me that he owns other locations and the original company doesn't care about customer service.
google avatar

Oscar S.

Yelp
I've walked past this place a thousand times AT LEAST.Kept telling myself ONE DAY...........Well,FINALLY!!! Had their beef gyro. Was pretty good.I really enjoyed it.Im in the area alot.Definitely plan on stopping in more often.Price was right too.Don't have to spend alot of money to have a good meal in the Loop.Their hot sauce is a tad spicy so take it easy. It's good though.Glad I stopped in.

Eshal M.

Yelp
If I could leave 0 stars I would. My family and I had a terrible experience at this restaurant with angry staff and disgusting bathrooms. Never in my life have I been yelled at by restaurant workers for dining with family and children. All 4 of the workers had absolutely no professionalism and laughed in our faces as we left the restaurant. I would never recommend this type of treatment to anyone and will never be coming back.
google avatar

K L.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Fast, fresh, full portions. Awesome. Someone didn't pickup an online order and the employee offered ky husband and I the extra order. I thought that was exceptional human kindness and customer service. For sure I'll return
google avatar

Laura R.

Yelp
Oily. Flavorless. Aggressive homeless grabbing for your food. Not at all like SF location. Disappointing.
google avatar

Ayush V.

Yelp
I love Mediterranean food. This place was very disappointing though. The chicken was a bit dry and definitely not seasoned well, it was so bland. The flavor of the falafel was ok but it was so dry. The rice had good grain separation and tasted fine. I got the limited time jalapeño hummus as well; I'd rather eat store bought hummus. The workers are very nice and the food comes out fast but you should save your money and just go to naf naf down the street.

Cesar G.

Yelp
The food wasn't so great the meat and chicken taste funny. I'm from Tennessee so I had better there the service was okay they charge extra for toppings which is weird It should already be included

Arshid P.

Yelp
was visiting Chicago with my four friends, went there for lunch. I was shocked to see the way one of the servers treated my friends. Very rude and condescending. I read other reviews about them and our conclusion was that they don't like black and brown people. I am sorry to say but their behavior left a very bad impression in my mind about halal guys.

Zee T.

Yelp
The food might be Halal, but the people in there with many layers of harem behaviors! The restaurant was very dirty and unorganized! I wouldn't waste my time there! The restaurant also did not have public parking so we had to park in the front and one person stayed in the car just to make sure..... the to- go box was also unmanageable.
google avatar

Kammy Windy Town W.

Yelp
Since I lived in NY years before, this Mediterranean fast food was so familiar to me, actually I missed it after got back to Tokyo. So I was so excited when I found this shop in Chicago! I ordered combo meat small plate without pita and olive. I remember well that red sauce was way too spicy so asked the staff to give me as a side pouch. Also white sauce was too creamy and thick for me I also asked the staff to give me it as side pouch. The plate was as good as I've eaten last time in NYC. The shop was clean and the staff was kind. Definitely come back.
