The 14 Best Restaurants In Madison, Wisconsin

"Before 2020, if you wanted a fancy dinner, you’d probably have a fine time at L’Etoile. But then Harvey House opened in 2021, and became Madison’s best spot for fine dining. It nails the restaurant Holy Trinity: flawless (but not in-your-face) service, incredible food, and an atmosphere where you can feel comfortable wearing Levi’s or Loewe. The dinner menu has high-end takes on Wisconsin supper club classics, like Lake Superior walleye or a crispy chicken schnitzel as big as your dad’s Steely Dan vinyl collection. Another standout is the kale caesar, which is dressed generously (in true Wisconsin style) and topped with buttery croutons that will make you reevaluate all of your previous salad experiences." - sarah probst

I don’t use “amazing” very often in my food/restaurant reviews. But this place was “amazing.” Inspired by Wisconsin supper clubs, the food was unique but traditional. The drinks were outstanding. The service impeccable and the building historic.

Google
I would give this a 10 out of 5 if I could. This was my best overall dining experience in Madison by a mile. Kennedy is a damn gem of a human and we felt valued and wanted the entire time. I've had restaurant experiences like this in Europe before but never in Wisconsin. Yeah it's kind of expensive, but you absolutely get what you pay for, and then some. We will absolutely be back - the customer experience and the food quality are unmatched in Madison.

Google
Heard amazing things about this restaurant and was looking forward for weeks to eating here for their special graduation menu. Service was incredible, and the place itself was beautiful on the inside as we sat right by the kitchen with not too much noise surprisingly. However, the food was extremely underwhelming. For starters the kielbasa was overall pretty tender and the outside crust was nice and fluffy. The French onion soup didn’t leave much of an impact honestly and I just had higher hopes for its flavor. My main issue was the entree. I ordered a medium rare steak and received it rare, chewy, and on a bed of wet spinach that added nothing to the flavor profile a long with carrots that were bland. Finally I thought the chocolate pie wasn’t bad, but certainly nothing that made me want to come back to it and order again. Overall I was left with stomach issues from a raw steak and with dishes that were extremely underwhelming for a special event set menu.

Google
We had a wonderful time dining here! The service fantastic. We went right at 4:30pm when it opens and got our dinner very quickly. Mocktails are really great as well as their actual cocktails.

Google
Hands down the absolute best place in Madison for an exquisite dinning experience. Chef Joe is the consumate professional with a unique eye for quality ingredients. The synergy of the staff is unparalleled, warm and inviting on every front of the establishment. Chef Joe and his wife are blessed with amazing taste and an excellent caring team that provides the best dining experience one could ask for. You will never be disappointed spending time with the Harvey House.

Google
32 oz steak. Wow. My wife and I had an excellent 35th anniversary dinner. The steak was a splurge along with tasty sides and a salad. It was expensive but as expected. There are less expensive alternatives. Good wine was reasonable. We did not have a reservation which is needed. So we sat at the bar which was perhaps less romantic but we still enjoyed the bar activity.

Google
Everything about our experience at Harvey house was amazing. The atmosphere was great. The service was on another level. It was one of the best meals I have had in Madison. Highly recommend.

Google
Lovely meal. Insanely good cocktails and even better service. Colby was a delight and made our entire evening. We will be back. The chicken dish was insane. The thoughtfulness of service was next level! Thank you kindly

Yelp
We arrived early for our reservation so started with drinks at the downstairs bar before getting our table with a kitchen view- a treat! Overall experience was our favorite in the Madison area to date. Cannot wait to go back! Service: 10/10. Every person was lovely and also allowed us space to enjoy our drinks/food. Well timed table service check ins and our water glasses were always filled! Drinks: My red wine was good. I had a glass of Sangiovese and a glass of Cab Sauv. My husband loved his old fashioned. Next time he hopes to have a Red Corn- they were out of J Henry Bourbon (his favorite) tonight. We tried the Clover- it was perfectly sweet + tart. Night capped with a Harvey Hopper a La mode (the only way) and an espresso martini! Both outstanding. Food: You cannot go to HH without trying the French onion soup. It's out of this world! We shared it- but when we go back I'm getting my own bowl. The relish tray was great for 90s supper club nostalgia. I had the walleye (9.4/10) and my husband had the pork shank (7.8/10). We got a bonus treat for my husband's birthday- spiced apple pavlova. A light and delicious seasonal treat.

Yelp
An amazing experience with great food and best-in-class service. The Harvey House is truly the total package from the ambience through the menu and presented by a knowledgeable and accommodating staff. Miley and Ethan truly helped make everyone feel welcome and treated us as if we were regulars. Kudos to Chef and the team in the back of the house for working with our table on several dietary restrictions and creating delicious options.

Yelp
From the initial cocktail to the relish tray to the schnitzel & then the array of decadent & delightful dessert treats, you may decide that you want to move into The Harvey House for life! Eating here is like being an actress/actor in an old-time film, with the most beautiful & detailed movie sets imaginable. Think dark, elegant, noir, riding a train into a beautiful sunset - and the service makes you feel like an international celebrity or spy (perhaps)? Enjoy the ride, dahlink!

Yelp
What an amazing dining experience! Highly recommend! Aside from some access/parking issues, we couldn't have had a better dinner and a better experience. We made reservations rather last minute and so sat at the upstairs bar. Usually eating a meal at the bar can be a lesser experience, but I think our experience was greatly enhanced by sitting at the bar. First, it was a bar for six, so it was small and intimate. Second, the bartender was attentive, informative, conversational, fun, and truly improving the dining experience. All that was great, but what truly impressed was the food. My wife and I travel all over the world and get the opportunity to dine in some pretty incredible restaurants. Our meal at The Harvey House was inventive, delicious, and truly extraordinary. Thanks to our bartender (I wish I could recall his name, it was his second night at the upstairs bar) and to the chef and kitchen staff for a truly incredible dinner. Afterward, we were given a private tour of the group space in the restaurant's antique dining train car by the restaurant manager. Very generous of their time!

Yelp
Amazing, unique dishes as always. Shaved vegetable salad and loaded baked potato were highlights. Proteins were perfectly cooked. Salmon was so buttery and plated beautifully. The wonderful staff always make Harvey house so much more special than a dinner. We had have never sat upstairs before, but absolutely loved the vibe there. There is another beautiful bar at the end of the dining space The bathroom is on the left of the bar.
google avatar

Camille L.

Yelp
This place is super cute inside. There is upstairs seating as well. The food was decent. We split the relish appetizer and the salmon entree was only ok. The Paloma tasted kind of bland. I give the decor and service five stars but food is only four stars. This place books up far in advance so make reservations early, especially during Badger football weekends. I personally thought this place was over hyped but it's worth trying if in town.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had the most AMAZING dinner here for our anniversary! Sebastian, our server, was so attentive and truly made this dinner special. He gave us free champagne, free ice cream, and even swapped out my martini glass so it was ice cold. I've had many dirty martinis, and this is truly one of the best I've had. My boyfriend was also obsessed with his cocktail, Lion's Tail. The vibes in here were great, very intimate and the service from all employees was outstanding. You can tell they really care about hospitality. The food was also great- standouts were the filet o' fish, apple pavlova, and superior walleye (their specialty). Mac and cheese was good as well but not traditional, so not my fave. They have free matchboxes and pens at the hostess stand, which are adorable momentos from this lovely dinner! Would highly recommend going here as it was an amazing experience!

Yelp
Exciting restaurant with some train-related history. Very easy to get to. The staff were excellent and attentive through the night. We were part of a corporate party, so we had a couple of set menu items to select from. I had the filet and it was a work of art. Just look at the photo I posted. Tender, delicious, and beautiful. Others said their walleye dish was delicious as well.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere, food, and service. The Harvey House is an amazingly dining experience. I highly recommend it. Definitely try the French onion bouillon, it is amazing and includes a swiss cheese foam that seems like a culinary science miracle.

Yelp
Good: Excellent, imaginative atmosphere. Excellent staff that makes one feel special. Fine location Bad: quite noisy. Expensive for the area. The menu hardly changes, and some of the choices have not been particularly tasty or creative.
google avatar

Yelp
Call me old fashioned but the "Call Me Old Fashioned" cocktail was amazing. It had Rye, Amaro Montenegro and Bitters and was a great way to start off. The smoked kielbasa in a blanket had a fantastic flavor, paired with a whole grain mustard jus. A masterful homage to one of Wisconsin's signature staples. And the French onion soup was like no previous one I've ever had. Amazing flavor and much lighter and not as thick as traditional versions that are typically smothered in melted cheese.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner and sat at the bar where Stu took care of me. Enjoyed a red corn old fashioned. Stu helped me make phenomenal selections to the menu, especially the turtle soup, which is served with a grand cru cheese mousse and was easily the best turtle soup I've ever enjoyed. The walleye was great, as was the strawberry pavlova. Truly enjoyed my meal, Stu's service, and even having non-street parking in the downtown Madison area.

Yelp
My favorite place in Madison. We stopped in for drinks and dessert to celebrate a birthday and they treated us with their top tier service, as always. The cocktails were great, we had the espresso martini and the whiskey sour. For desserts, we had the dark chocolate pudding and a spiced apple pavlova. Both were fantastic.

Yelp
Wow this place is a real find. We were seated right away. The service was amazing. The wine list is one of the best I've seen. Excellent selection by the glass. We started with the chicken liver mousse. It comes in a nice jar with toasted brioche strips and small amount of mixed greens. OMG it's quite good. Not as rich as pate but a lighter version. They also brought a nice bun with flakes of sea salt and sweet butter. Yum! We shared the superior walleye. It's served with a topping of caraway crust. It was the best walleye, I've ever had. It was unbelievable. It's served with a horse radish sabayon. what a genius combo. We ended it with the strawberry pavlova. A huge portion size lots of rich whipped cream. The service is attentive and informed. Gorgeous venue. The only negative was the seating. largely hard wooden chairs or benches. Almost seemed like they don't want you to sit there too long.

Yelp
The Harvey House has it all. A simple menu, but everything is packed with flavor. All of the staff is kind, attentive, and professional. They go above and beyond to ensure a great experience. Love the open kitchen and the fun bar scene on both floors. And the food. You can't go wrong. The pictures can't do the dishes justice. The most pleasant surprises were the Gespacho and Fish Sandwich. The Gespacho is not your typical tomato soup, and in my opinion it's a must try. The fish sandwich, for lack of a better description is an upscale Filet of fish. A thick filet, buttery bun, and the best part is the delicious dill sauce. The salads are both elevated versions of classics, and the shredded kale Caesar stands out as unique and delicious. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We had a group dinner at Harvey House, and they really put out the stops for our group. First we had a private room upstairs, despite away from the open kitchen (my favorite part), it was very nice to have that quiet space. Upon entering the private room, the tables were already set up with our apps, pickled veggies, shrimp cocktail and beets salad. Nicely presented with dishes at each end of the table. Loved the shrimp cocktail and beets salad. I did not enjoy the pickled veggies, perhaps I picked the wrong veggie but the pickles were so strong, I could've done without trying this. Our pre-fixe menu was nicely selected, we were able to get a selected tasting of the menu, which I really liked! We had an option of salad (I selected the kale salad) and a selection of 4 different mains, for which I selected the walleye as this is a local dish. My walleye was delicious and perfectly cooked, it had a layer of cracker on top, which changed the dynamic of the texture. I also opted instead of the spatzle, for a side of veggies and the kitchen changed it to cauliflower (which I was so thrilled about). The desserts were also an option, I selected the lemon pudding, I sadly did not care too much for this dessert, I selected the least sweet option. Also want to mention our waiter Neil was so attentive, I asked for mocktails and he made me two different very delicious drinks! Overall, service was great, our pre-fixe menu gave me a wonderful tasting of what Harvey House had to offer. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Could I possibly give this more stars?!? What a privilege to dine here. All aboard the best supper club in the world. Service- nothing but first class service here. I ordered a dirty martini and half way through they brought a new frosted glass to keep it on point. It was our anniversary and they brought us a champagne toast to start the experience. Everyone was just a joy. Atmosphere- beautiful but not overdone. This place still has soul in it. You can't pick a wrong seat in the place. Although I did enjoy a view of the open kitchen. Food- must do.... Relish tray. This is an elevated classic. Loved every single thing on it. We also ordered the steak that was cooked to perfection and the mushrooms. They gave us a complimentary side that I have no idea what it was but it was one of our favorite things we had! Rhubarb dessert was delicious. This is on my top 20 places I've been and I will be back!

Yelp
While back in Madison visiting, I was looking for a super club and found The Harvey House as a good option for our group. It's an upscale super club with some fantastic drinks (try their dirty martini!) and good food. I loved how they exchanged martini glasses half way through so our glasses were cold throughout the drink experience- such a great idea! Luke/Lucas was our incredibly attentive server and overall we had a fun and delicious meal. We definitely ordered a few too many apps so by the time our meal came I was stuffed but it was worth it! The relish tray and the deviled eggs were my favorites. The Walleye entree was the star of the meal though with that crispy topping and flaky fish.

Yelp
This place was amazing! Food was delicious - there is a small menu & they rotate dishes out but it was tasty! We got the special ribeye & shared it. It was plenty of food and came with two sides - we chose the sautéed spinach & loaded baked potatoes! It was sooooo good! Dessert was the perfect finish as well. I loved the vanilla ice cream with shot of espresso. The service was also great! Drinks were refilled quickly & they were super helpful and friendly! And the place was so cute! Perfect for a date night or girls night out. We sat upstairs and there was a cute bar area up there as well! Definitely would go back!

Yelp
I stopped by for dinner on a Saturday evening. I took reservation before going. Saturday seems to be a busy day. Complimentary bread came warm with nice spreadable butter. It came with salt sprinkled on top, which serves as a decoration. But that made the bread too salty for me. Also the salt had sharp edges, which scratched top of my mouth. Apart from that the bread was soft and went well with the butter. Chicken schnitzel was my entree item. It was sufficient quantity for 1 person. It was fried crispy, and was sitting on top of mild flavored sauce. For dessert, I went for Pavlova. It was the favorite part of my meal. It was a bigger portion dessert, may be 2 people can share. It had strawberry, a macaroon sort of hard shell and meringue cream.

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere, service, and food. Our table had an amazing view of the kitchen and my wife and I both loved our dishes. 10/10 would recommend

Yelp
We finally visited Harvey House and instantly began questioning what took us so long! Start to finish, our experience was excellent. We had two seats at the bar, which meant we were able to learn all sorts of fun things about the restaurant from the bartender. Shout out to bartender Chad for making our experience so great! For dinner we enjoyed shrimp cocktail, a fish sandwich, and their new pork dish. We loved everything. Definitely do not sleep on the fish sandwich -- to die for (that dill sauce!). For my birthday the restaurant provided me with a toasted meringue dessert. I have never had anything like it, and absolutely loved it.

Yelp
We so enjoyed our experience at The Harvey House! From the moment we arrived we were greeted with a friendly welcome by the hosts. We sat upstairs, as we had heard it was a little more quiet than the main floor with the bar & open kitchen. Our server, Roan, was extremely friendly and polite. His assistant was equally attentive. They took care of us & anticipated our every need, even before we knew that we would need it. The before dinner cocktails, The "Call Me Old Fashioned " was one of the best & the martini was served with a second serving.... And a second chilled glass & lemon twist. Top notch. For dinner, we ordered the chicken schnitzel, the walleye & the pork tenderloin. Each were served with a side and a homemade roll before. Each protein portion was generous & we definitely didn't need a starter or soup/salad prior. We didn't order dessert, however, Roan brought out a pavlova for us to share.... Just enough of a sweet to fill in the cracks. It is pricey, however, worth every penny considering the service & food are top notch. You definitely get what you pay for! It's probably not a once a week dinner but for a special occasion, it's the perfect place to celebrate. Ask for Roan, he's the best!
google avatar

Malia Y.

Yelp
Second time here and all I have to say is... Get the meatloaf. But it was a special. I HATE mushrooms... and ye,s this dish had mushrooms in it. I did not ask for this to be removed... but dang, I would eat this meal again and again. If anything, I would've opted for no ketchup. The second time was better than the first time! And I loved my first time.
google avatar

Anna R.

Yelp
Food was very good, very nice take on your favorite comfort food dishes. But I was more amazed by the service, which was awesome! We arrived an hour prior our reservation, and they still gave us a great table. Staff are nice and almost Michelin trained, which I think is more than it needs to be. But I understand the chef's standard from his background. Good experience!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant on earth. I have zero affiliation with this restaurant. Mark was our server, for our family of five and he was the best server I've had my entire life. No one does a martini service like The Harvey House...no one. Their play on Filet-o-fish which is our favorite sandwich at Mcds, is unbelievable. The 36 oz Ribeye was good for 4 people, not 2 as advertised. Amazing char on the steak, best baked potato I've ever had. The attention to detail on everything in this restaurant did not go unnoticed. It was as impeccable as it gets. The food, the service, the decor, the price, it is very rare to hit on all four.

Meara D.

Yelp
The Harvey House delivers a QUALITY meal experience and food that tastes so delicious. My fiancé and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary and put those details in our reservation. The hostess AND waiter acknowledged our celebration and made us feel so special. The drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts are out of this world. I told our waiter I felt like I had sprouted wings from my back and was flying to heaven after eating my appetizer and entree (I was feeling on cloud nine, if you will). At the end of the evening, we got to a free glass of champagne, dessert, and got to sample Cardamaro before the night was over. My fiancé and I felt so spoiled by the experience, it was truly such an amazing way to celebrate. If you are looking to celebrate an event of any kind or overall looking for somewhere to enjoy an out of this world experience in terms of quality service, ambiance, and food, please try The Harvey House!

Yelp
Went to the Harvey house with my mom, my friend, and her mother for a little mother-daughter birthday dinner. We were celebrating the mom's novemeber birthdays. The service was absolutely fabulous! I wish u remembered our waiters name, he was great! We sat upstairs which we really enjoyed as it was more intimate. We ordered the short rib and the salmon... delicious!

Yelp
This place is so cute inside I really liked the vibe. Loved that that had a good NA drink menu and seriously Lovely staff and our server was awesome. However, I won't be coming back here for anything other thanks there NA drinks and desserts. The presentation of the food items made me lose my appetite and the first few bites of things I had were all too salty/over seasoned. The French onion soup was something everyone can skip here unfortunately. My husband liked his gnocchi and my steak was cooked well but the sides and different sauces just didn't taste good. If you're looking for a yummy restaurant I'd keep looking. I know their menu changes so maybe I came on a bad night. Overall this place has a lot of potential.

Yelp
The service here is unmatched! The staff is incredibly attentive and kind, you can tell that they want you to have a good experience here. Plus the ambiance is cozy and a little retro, very classy. I would highly recommend checking out Harvey House. Also the bar is a great place to sit if you want to mingle with the bartender and others around

Yelp
Ive worked in the culinary industry for over 10 years in almost all roles one can perform. Restaurant margins are slim, so every role must be essential to ensuring a guest has a worthwhile experience for their time and money. Theres many different types of restaurants that cater to different experiences. The Curve is an essential greasy spoon, Halong Bay is a delightful bustling local joint that is very carry out friendly, and Village Bar always delivers a tasty burger and cold Miller Light. All of these establishments are a worthwhile investment into your time and money and shine throughout the Madison community that show that an excellent time eating out doesn't have to be fine dining. Harvey House stands tall in a corner of its own in Madison fine dining. The dozens of staff members occupying the establishment work as a team to deliver flawless service that show how necessary each staffer is. The interior is absolutely beautiful - the transition between the closed in 'garden' type dining area attached to the marvelous interior is quite impressive. Our server never missed a beat, she was helpful and eager to ensure our time was priceless. She offered a free round of Champagne as well as digestif's at the end of our meal. The runners and support staff were equally excellent and perfectly timed. My espresso martini was a little underwhelming, the onion stars lacked a little salt, and cocktail sauce I always prefer with more horseradish. These are nitpicks. The food otherwise was as good as it gets, on par with Fairchild-but make it supper club. The relish tray was essential, the shrimp in the cocktail were tender and delicious, my chicken schnitzel was perfectly moist and tasty, best pirogies I've ever had, and chocolate tart was stunning. The cocktails were perfect, I loved the fernet airplane shooters, and I am counting down the days till I get to return. I love the service industry. I love how it can transform someone's day and make a show stopping event out of eating supper. Harvey House shows the care they put into their craft, and I can't suggest it enough. This was worth every penny.

Yelp
This is a beautiful restaurant. We were sat in the bar area facing the open kitchen. The booth seating is oddly configured with seating for one group on one side and seating for a party of two on the other. Our waiter Chad is definitely an outstanding asset to this restaurant. He was very friendly, personable and had passion in his craft. The other staff that visited the table were okay. After filling our water glasses they left the carafe of water on the table. They would then walk by and fill a water glasses over and over. I guess if you leave the carafe of water at our table, we will then fill our water but not here. It just seemed like a lot of unnecessary interruptions throughout the meal. The food was below average. This relish tray was odd. I watched one of the chefs put down her propane burner after working on a dessert and with her bare hands then put our tray together. She placed a marinaded carrot stick on one side of the tray and one on the other side and so on. When it came to the table, one of the servers explained what was on the tray. The salmon spread and whipped ranch dip were delicious. The pickled vegetables were okay, some were soft. Dipping these marinaded vegetables in the ranch dressing didn't work. Plan cut vegetables would have been much better with the ranch. An entree stand out was the superior walleye (poor plate choice and Spatzle was not good but that fish was great). The charcoal grilled New York strip steak and the crispy pork shank were both not good and miss labeled. Crispy pork shank should have been called deep fried shredded pork with flour formed in a ball around a bone.

Yelp
Finally had the chance to stop in at the Harvey House for a wonderful evening. We started the night with cocktails -- the ice-cold martini was not only delicious and smooth, but kept cold the entire time (you'll have to try one to get the full experience). We also got the "clover club" with gin, lemon, and raspberry - gorgeous presentation, and very delightful. Concurrent with the cocktails, they brought over buns and butter for the table - solid. For appetizers, we got the chicken liver mousse and kale Caesar salad. The chicken liver was very tasty, but there wasn't enough bread for the surplus of liver. The salad was a HIT - the warm croutons stole the show (and they didn't skimp on the parmesan)! For mains, I got the slow cooked salmon with cauliflower purée, and assorted cruciferous vegetables. The salmon was deliciously tender with a crispy top. My date got the New York strip steak with roasted crispy potatoes and mushrooms. The steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare and the sides perfectly accompanied the meal. We didn't get dessert, but got complimentary amaro digestifs - great way to end an incredible night at the Harvey House. Now, the service - INCREDIBLE. We had Chad, who was an amazingly skilled and courteous server. He took great care of us, was attentive without being overly so, and the complimentary amaro was a great touch.

Yelp
Love this place so much. The food, service, and ambiance are just outstanding every time. I love the slight adjustments to the menu throughout the year to highlight seasonal produce. Have visited 4 times now over the past couple years and have been blown away every time. Menu highlights include the relish tray, baked potato, walleye, pork chop, and pavlova. Definitely a place worth visiting for a special occasion!

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful birthday dinner at Harvey House this evening. My husband made early 5:15 pm reservations and mentioned my birthday. The staff were very attentive and professional. We liked our lead waiter, Patrick! He was friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered the roasted chicken special for two people. It comes with two large side dishes. We ordered the baked potato without the cheese sauce and broccoli. In addition we ordered kale Caesar salads. I received a complimentary glass of Prosecco for my birthday. In addition I was treated to a wonderful birthday dessert with a candle. The food was delicious. Very tasty! and beautiful presentation. The atmosphere is modern, pleasant, and thankfully not overly noisy. I especially liked the festive strings of lights in the first floor area where we dined. The Monday roasted chicken special is a great deal! Dinner for two - $60. Thank you to the entire Harvey House team for a perfect birthday dinner.

Yelp
FANTASTIC restaurant, 1000% recommended!!!!!! We have been here numerous times, but this time we got the special whole chicken, the steak for two, shrimp, and spinach for our entrees. For dessert we had the pear Pavlova, which was good... but we would really like to see the raspberry hibiscus pavlova back on the dessert menu, as that was EXCEPTIONAL. The vanilla ice cream is the best I have ever had (which is saying something, as we have a professional ice cream machine at home). Service is amazing. The Harvey House is absolutely my favorite restaurant in all of Madison! I hope to return soon!!! ...But let me say again, the Raspberry Hibiscus Pavlova was top notch, and to see it back on the menu would be thrilling.

Yelp
A multi-week wait for a kitchen-view table is totally worth waiting for at The Harvey House! We booked a table for four in order to treat a pair of out-of-town guests. Everyone agreed that the food and service were absolutely stellar. I tried one of The Harvey House original (I assume) cocktails: Hotel Washington Punch. It was right up my alley. It was bright and fruity but not too sweet. Lovely. A couple of us started with the French Onion Boullion. The bowl arrived with the cheesy goodness on the bottom. A server then poured the Onion Soup into the cheese layer, causing the foamy cheesy layer to rise to the top. The dish was delicious, but both diners missed a traditional "crusty" cheese top layer. Three in our party ordered Chicken Schnitzel. The crisp-crusted, juicy chicken breast was massive and nicely seasoned. It sat on a bed of wild rice. I ordered the "all day braised lamb shoulder." Our server nailed a perfect description--similar to shephards pie, but made with super tender lamb. It was truly scrumptious and so rich that the crown of potatoes offered a nice break from the richness. Mmmm. Were we stuffed from our entrees? Yes. Did we order dessert anyway? Yes. We could not turn down the opportunity to indulge in Chocolate Creme Brulee. Were we sorry at all for ordering dessert? Hell no. It was AMAZING TIMES TEN. My only regret is not getting a picture of the inside deliciousness! Put this dessert on your bucket list, people. It is that good!

Yelp
First time here. Made reservation for 3 online through rest and it said downstairs only but when we got there, we were brought upstairs. A pleasant surprise but upstairs is where you want to be. Quiet and cozy. The original bricks and woodworks are so inviting. We had a couple of cocktails, call me old fashion and the clover club. We all agreed that the clover club treated like a melted Luigi sorbet - you know the frozen type that comes in a paper tube. Let's start with the bread rolls - warm and soft, topped with a dash of salt and be served with butter also topped with salt. Very nice. One thing I don't like at restaurants is cold bread to start the meal. For appetizer, 6 PIE oysters topped with sour apple chiffon, and be a sprinkle of chili flakes. Deliciously fresh. For entrées we each ordered a different be fish to try. The slow cooked salmon is very well done, not that it is well done, like over cooked. I know you know what I mean. Menu says it's is served with ruby red grapefruit, navel oranges, etc. They literally mean that. The fruits pieces were served with the salmon. The superior walleye has a hard crispy crust that is so fun to bitter into. Crunch crunch. The horseradish sabayon sauce pairs well with it. The spatule was intriguing. It was green, likely from the cabbage, and fried because some of the edges were crispy. The menu also mentioned pumpernickel but I don't remember eating any of that. I don't think I missed that either. The 3rd dish was the applewood smoked short rib. Wonderful dish. The meat is so tender. Definitely recommend this. Watch out though - plenty to eat. We shared a side of Harvey's wedge and the best part of this side is the nueske's bacon. Thick and delicious. The bleu cheese dressing was very thick though. However, i think this is wasn't necessary. We had no room for desserts after my eating the main dishes. Definitely on my list of restaurants to repeat.

Yelp
My friends and I came here on one of the coldest nights of the year and they were giving out complementary hot toddies to customers, which warmed my heart. The three of us ordered the chicken liver mousse, and the sizzling shrimp de jonghe to share. The mousse was delightful on its own (bc it's chicken liver and you can't go wrong) but the port wine jelly on top just brought it up to another level. Not only did it add to the presentation of the dish, the subtle sweet and fruity flavors helped reduce the gaminess of the liver which can quickly become a bit much sometimes. The little buttered toast sticks were also a great match! The shrimp de jonghe was very garlicky, just the way I like it. The shrimp was cooked to perfection and texture was spot on, and was definitely "sizzling" when it came out! We then ordered some soups, which they pour it right into your bowl at the table! The New England clam chowder had bacon in it which made it a little difficult to pick up on the clams at first, but I enjoyed it nonetheless bc it was like -20 outside. For our main, we shared the dinner special 32 oz bone-in ribeye among the 3 of us and it was more than enough! The steak was cooked perfectly to our liking and was very tender, but maybe a little under seasoned. The gravy that came with it was way too salty for me, which was a bummer. For dessert, we had the grasshopper dessert cocktail and made it a la mode! Yes, you read that correctly. It was like a boozy Girl Scout thin mint sundae! Not too sweet, not too strong, and now I'm a fan. The service was impeccable throughout the night and I can see why reservations are a must here!

Yelp
After having dinner I bandit we headed next-door to have dessert at the Harvey House. There were four in our party and we were lucky enough to be seated right away at the bar. The restaurant was quite busy for 6 PM on a week night, so definitely plan a reservation if you're interested in going. We came for dessert and were pleasantly surprised by the selection of dessert items. They had a Door County butter cake as the special, we also shared a lemon bar, strawberries and cream, and the crowd pleaser was a chocolate dessert that looked like an adult version of a giant fancy Hoho. Everyone that we encountered was nothing but nice and professional. They were very accommodating and answered all of our questions with a smile. The service here is outstanding and I can only imagine we would be met with the same quality if we were dining in for our meal. On our way out I inquired as to what was in the train car that sits outside of the restaurant. Harvey house is such a cool vibe given that it is a renovated train depot that still has train tracks and a train car outside. The host was kind enough to give us a tour of the train car which is a private dining space for events. A great space to have a party of approximately 30 guests or less. Overall, it was such a fun experience with delicious dessert and drinks! I can't wait to go back and try out the dinner. Although, we may save it for a special occasion given the upscale vibe and that entrées are 30+ dollars per plate. I was happy to see a few vegetarian options. Our bartender recommended the pea soup!

Yelp
my bf and i came here to celebrate his 25th birthday - easily one of the best restaurants that we had in madison. the ambiance is set around these old train cars, and the interior is decorated in an upscale, regal sense (where the madison elite go tbh). the service was fantastic, each time we finished eating, our plates were taken away swiftly and then immediately replaced. our server was well-intentioned and helpful. as for the food, we got individualized bread which was actually the perfect amount to prevent me from getting too full. we had the door county cherry burrata for our appetizer which was literally 10/10!!!! the cherries were perfectly soft and blended right into the burrata, which was also very light and clean. that on top of the crispy texas toast was unlike anything i've had before. for our entrees, i was obsessed with the truffle mac n cheese. the macaroni was clearly made in house and the truffle/cheese was never overpowering. the sauce complimented the mac perfectly like no other. my lesser fav was the superior walleye - i loved how crispy it was but i didn't love the horseradish or capers. totally a personal preference though. we ordered the pavlova for dessert - which was absolutely incredible, light and airy like a meringue and the strawberries were a delicious summer treat - and ended up also getting the dark chocolate pudding as a surprise with a candle for my bf's bday!! so exciting!!! beyond impressed with everything here, i highly recommend checking this place out

Yelp
My go-to restaurant in Madison! The old train station adds a great vibe to this excellent restaurant. Service is always good--the team is exceptionally trained to provide the right level of attentiveness, friendliness, and humor. I get the chicken liver mousse every time, even when dining alone because it's that good. My favorites are the walleye and the slow roasted salmon, but you really can't go wrong with any of the dishes. When the French onion soup is on the menu, you must get it, because the presentation is unlike any other French onion soup I've had. The bartenders are also very skilled and make some great classic cocktails. I wish I lived closer so I could go more often!

Yelp
This was a superb dining experience. I was in Madison for a conference for work. Once I did my homework and found out that there was a Harvey House restaurant, I knew I had to make a reservation. The service was outstanding; everyone was friendly and helpful with the menu. The food was superb. One of the most delicious foodie episodes I have ever had. It's perfect for a date night or a celebration.

Yelp
The party sitting at our reserved table took their time departing. The general manager noticed their delay and quickly offered us a round of drinks and apps. She was amazing and it makes our wait enjoyable rather than frustrating. The waiter was knowledge and steered us in the right direction with menu choices.

Yelp
Service was outstanding! Food was very delicious! But the noise level was loud and distracting.

Yelp
This was our first visit, key FIRST, since it will be many. The food was amazing and the service was even better. The staff was extremely patient with menu questions and making recommendations (order the walleye!) and they can do kids meals ("best buttered noodles ever!"). It's a bit noisy inside for conversation but it's lovely and reasonable with today's prices. You'll love it, we promise!

Yelp
We absolutely loved the Harvey House! We dined here on Friday night while in town for the weekend. We loved it so much, we went back the second night for drinks. Our server, Mike was the bomb. Fabulous food, drinks and ambiance. Impeccable service. Mike was very knowledgeable and made great recommendations. We enjoyed the relish tray which consisted of crudite veggies, applewood smoked salmon, dip, deviled eggs, b&b pickle slices and whipped ranch dip. For dinner, we had the charcoal grilled pork chop with creamed corn and sour cherry, barbecue sauce and the walleye with spinach spatzle and horseradish cream. For dessert, we enjoyed the pavlova which was so light and fluffy with a dollop of whipped cream and strawberries. Overall, amazing dining experience. It was by far, the best place we dined at while in Madison. Also, great bourbon selection!!
