The 11 Best Coffee Shops In Downtown Austin

"Sporting old wooden floorboards, local pastries, and cozy decor, The Hideout is one of the few coffee shops Downtown that actually feels like it grew up in Austin. It’s close to The Paramount and 6th Street, making this a great stop to grab a little caffeine before catching a film or heading out on the town. But you can also just hang out here during the day to get a little work done and feel like you’re in a cute little neighborhood shop somewhere far from 6th Street. " - raphael brion, nicolai mccrary

Google
Very nice place with a very good espresso. Barista was very nice and polite. She greeted me with a big smile and made some joke with me. The place is interesting and with good seats options. I got some work done there with no problems. Espresso was very good and I was almost ordering a second one. I really recommend it.

Google
This coffeehouse is very chill and unpretentious. There are simple butcher block tables with metal chairs and brick walls with a wood ceiling. Small artwork is on the walls and is for sale. The employee I interacted with was helpful to me in selecting a drink. The decision I made ended up being perfect! The pastries are from Easy Tiger, so bagels, croissants, and tacos are available. This is a great coffeehouse.

Google
I visited Hideout Coffee and ordered their Almond Joy iced latte and an everything bagel with chive cream cheese. Their iced latte was delicious but not anything too special. I did however really enjoy their everything bagel with chive cream cheese. The chive cream cheese they used had actual pieces of fresh chives mixed in and it was very fresh and delicious. The coffee shop had a cool and chill vibe, and the staff were friendly. Thank you

Google
Stopped by to try their matcha and ordered it with almond milk and honey. The flavor was a bit milder than I prefer, so I’d rate it a 4/5. That said, it’s a great spot for coffee or tea, with plenty of seating and a relaxed atmosphere.

Google
Had a delicious pistachio match latte from here. They have a beautiful interior with lots of seating and artwork.

Google
Quaint bright and vibrant shop with friendly people. Hideout Hazelnut (Caramel & Hazelnut) flavor was faint when delivered but after asking for one more shot of each it was very good(maybe I just like sweeter more flavorful coffee). I hope they resell the muffins because it was very dry yet tasty. Getting the wrapper off just about destroyed the muffin. See photo. Service needs minor tweaking. I wasn’t given my muffin at checkout because the cashier was distracted (she chats a lot which seems to slow service), but then when I asked for it she told me to have a safe night, at 8:30am.

Google
Starving after a medical appointment and ducked into the Hideout for nourishment and respite. Had THE BEST HAM/GRILLED SWISS SANDWICH WITH HONEY. The ham had no slivers of fat. All succulent ham. And a chaser of fresh lemonade. The staff is sweeter than Texas tea. Jazzy relaxing Christmas instrumental music accented dangling lights . A totally peaceful vibe. If you are at Aloft Downtown, exit front door. Hang a left 1 minute away on Congress. Pass 7-11 and a few steps away on left, The Hideout. My new hang out. A variety of sandwiches/drinks/coffee. Sit on a stool and watch Austinites and visitors walk by. Or grab a cozy table and forget the rat race.

Food is fresh which is great! The shop is really cute. The staff is cheerful and helpful. Even when busy you still get your order quick. Nice area.

Yelp
There is nothing pretentious about this coffeehouse. The atmosphere is very chill. Music plays, but it is very easy to have a conversation. The walls are brick with a wood rafter ceiling. The tables and counter are butcher block and chairs are metal. They carry Easy Tiger bakery items, tacos, breakfast sandwiches, and have lunch items. Their coffee cups are paper and recyclable. The walls are adorned with art by local artists, all available for purchase. My Raspberry Riot latte, one of the popular drinks they sell, was quite tasty. I'm glad I chose it. I asked for a recommendation and was told about the most popular drinks. I followed up asking what the employee's favorite was, but it was a bust because she only drinks black coffee! I note this because I've been to other places where black coffee drinkers simply skip recommendations with that excuse about their coffee choice. This employee had awareness of drink popularity in the coffee shop.

Yelp
Rustic vibes aka hella hippy decor. But the place did have a weird smell in the air I will say. Lots of variety for syrups and interesting drink options. Got a white chocolate iced latte with almond milk. It was alright, wasn't the biggest fan tbh it felt very artificial tasting and I had to keep mixing the drink. Decent place though

Yelp
Though overpriced ($7 for a 16 ounce vanilla iced latte), The Hideout is otherwise everything you'd want in a local coffee shop. There's local art for sale on the walls, they stock bites and baked good, and the baristas are friendly and fast. The coffee was good though not appreciably better than similar drinks that cost less elsewhere.

Yelp
Yummy food and drinks at Hideout! I enjoyed the promptness of the service and that there is ample seating - with ample plug ins and free wifi for remote workers or students! Today I enjoyed a dirty chai with oat milk and lavender accompanied by the avocado, egg, and cheese sandwich on sourdough. Both were quite delicious :) This shop is conveniently located and has a cute artsy vibe inside.

Yelp
The place is pretty chic, it was in downtown and we were on the way to the Capitol with our Segway tour, the orders took longer than expected, but it was good. The staff were friendly and helpful as well.

Yelp
The Hideout Coffeehouse is a great option for grabbing a quick cup of coffee, or hanging out for a bit while downtown! The coffee itself was strong and flavorful, the interior is cute, and the workers are very friendly... aka exactly what I want from a coffeehouse. I popped in unexpectedly while waiting for a show at The Paramount Theatre to grab a hot cup of coffee and there was plenty of seating available (around 6:00 pm on a Friday night). SERVICE - The baristas were friendly and got my order ready quickly! No complaints whatsoever and I had a pleasant experience overall. PRICING - The total was $8.12 before tip for a 12oz drip coffee and a 12oz cappuccino... pretty standard for a local coffee shop. FAST FACTS: * Parking - paid garages and metered parking nearby but plan ahead * Wifi - FREE! * Plenty of outlets for charging devices * Plenty of seating with tables for working * Part of an improv theater with classes and shows (calendar available on their website) DRIP COFFEE - Delicious! I drink my coffee black and this was a great cup of coffee. It was fresh and VERY hot! CAPPUCCINO - I didn't personally drink this one but my husband said it was also delicious!

Yelp
Fairly simple coffeeshop right on SoCo. We have stopped by a couple of times pre-show. They have a nice selection of bakery items, including gluten-free vegan options from Zucchini Kill Bakery. The coffees are good but usually there's only one person at the counter so you have to be patient. They also serve beers and ciders.
google avatar

Chriselda J.

Yelp
Cafe mocha was delicious! Service is fast and friendly! I was taking myself out so check out the improv shows and this was a bonus! The ambiance is chill and fun! Cant wait to go back!

Yelp
Good hangout spot with delicious panini's. I'm not one with a sweet tooth, so I just wanted to chill with my kids while they devoured their nicely sized panini's. BTW: the chicken pesto panini is delicious just like the ones I make at home. The place feel very tight and crowded for my taste and that didn't help me with my claustrophobia. I would have stayed around for a while longer for people watching at chatting, but it was taking too much energy to pretend I wasn't feeling trapped.

Yelp
Ordered a chai. Was really yum...vibes seem great. Came with a big group of friends and it was very accommodating

Yelp
We stopped here because we needed some time to kill before it was time to see the bats from the bridge (who we weren't able to see FYI). The decor was funky and cool. The service was quick and very friendly. I liked that they had some different flavors rather than just the usual. I ordered an almond joy iced latte. I could taste the coconut, but it wasn't overly sweet. The coffee itself was still able to shine through. The inside was clean and the tables were a decent size. I didn't try any pastries, but they looked yummy. Overall, the coffee was good and I really liked the vibe and service. I would come back if I am ever in the area again.

Yelp
Excellent customer service! Cool staff. They sell luke hot drinks so get em while they're Luke hot

Yelp
Casual, hip coffee house in downtown on Congress. The coffee is solid and there is free wifi with outlets along the wall. There are tables and bar stools. It has an indie vibe. I got the ice latte with almond milk and hazelnut syrup. It was delicious. There are also restrooms available. Pastries and breakfast items are also offered. I liked the high ceiling and off beat vibe.

Yelp
Hip PDX vibes for this downtown Austin spot. Delicious latte. Expected coffee shop prices. ($5-$8 per drink) Quiet space, perfect for catching up with a friend. Knowledgeable baristas. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Holly D.

Yelp
The coffee shop itself is really cute and has a lot of options. Unfortunately, the only thing that seems to be house made is the coffee, which isn't much to write home about. I got the iced brown sugar latte which had to be remade because it was hot. The pastries are delicious but outsourced from Easy Tiger. The apple danish was amazing and the chocolate croissant was delicious. The barista we had was helpful but a little sharp. I probably wouldn't come back here but it's not bad for stumbling upon a coffee shop.

Yelp
Solid coffee spot that I happened across in Austin! [Coffee] I ordered a lavender latte and it wasn't too sweet, had just the right amount of espresso and lavender flavor. [Service] Very friendly! We kind of mobbed the place with a large group but none of the servers complained and they even helped guide some of our lost members toward the pack. Also they have water which is always nice [environment] I didn't end up working here but there were a decent amount of small tables that people were working at and there's some nice music playing in the background. It's not too noisy and seems quite cozy (wow that rhymes!)
google avatar

Yelp
Not much to report but cute downtown coffee shop. I think this is a good place to get some work done as there is lots of seating and it was surprisingly quiet for the amount of ppl in there. Coffee didn't "wow" me but the service was great with very friendly staff.
google avatar

Ryan D.

Yelp
A nice little coffeehouse in the heart of downtown Austin. The service is friendly and the food is what you would expect from a coffeehouse.
google avatar

Aly B.

Yelp
The shop is cute with a really cool concept and the coffee is decent. The staff was friendly and efficient. My only complaint is that the breakfast tacos were flavorless and had the consistency of dust. I wouldn't recommend trying those.
google avatar

Holly W.

Yelp
Cute shop, good coffee, good downtown location, efficient service. ...................................................................................

Yelp
The aesteic of this place is great. Love that they have improv on the weekends too. My latte was yummy and I also had an Italian Soda. The vegan cakes have an acquired taste, so ummm...be mindful of that. :-)
google avatar

Yelp
New to Austin for a conference and have Friday to explore around. Found this and had a short walk to the river. The latte tends to be watery and I guess it's cuz of the 2% milk. Overall a regular coffee shop for a cup of joe.
google avatar

Savina M.

Yelp
Stopped in here for some quick coffee in the morning, I know there probably could've been somewhere better near by. Service was nice, but she recommended getting their banana bread because it's super moist & their best-seller. Honestly this was probably the worst baked good I've gotten in general ever lol. It tasted rough and like a refrigerator, it 100% was not fresh. Their coffee was also okay, nothing too special. She said this place has been here since the 1940s, I'm surprised they haven't perfected their coffee within the long timeframe they've had. If you're a casual drinker & don't really care about coffee, you likely wouldn't care & would be okay with this place. I wouldn't recommend

Yelp
Food is fine, service is friendly. Slightly above average coffee place. Conveniently located around the corner from ALoft.

Yelp
Coffee was great, clean and relaxing atmosphere. The music was super chill. If I was a local this would be my favorite place to be!

Niharika K.

Yelp
Great coffee! The raspberry mocha was delicious. Overall great food and cafe music. Service was pretty quick too
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I came here on our visit to the downtown area. I was hungry and thought a nice warm coffee would help me get through. I got the Gorilla Mocha warm and it was very satisfying! My husband got the same but iced and he loved his as well! The place had a hipster vibe, it reminded me of the coffee shop from Friends and Frazier. It was adorable with a new charm. They have small snacks and sandwiches to nosh on as well. The ambiance is moderately noisy and the service was great! The staff made our drinks within 5 minutes. I really felt like they paid attention to us and really cared. I will be sure to bring my friends here when they come to visit us! I was so eager to drink my beverage that I didn't get a picture I am so sad because the barista made it look so pretty too!

Yelp
I loved this little place for its uniqueness and especially for its coffee. I ordered the Raspberry Riot, a mocha with a raspberry flavor. It was excellent. It was served at a nice temperature topped with a smooth and creamy froth. This is a small coffee shop with quite a bit of seating. The staff was pleasant and ready to assist with your order. They have the basics, such as espressos and lattes. They also have a few speciality drinks. I usually get hot coffee, but they offer your Cup of Joe in a chilled (iced) cup too. It was good to get inside from the heat outdoors and sit for a bit. It's not so fancy, but it feels like home sitting on the screen porch enjoying your time with someone special or alone while you sip the caffeine away. So if you are in the neighborhood, then stop in for a few and have a wonderful "Cup of Joe". I think you will enjoy it!

Yelp
First things first:, entrance spider web is on the side of neglect rather than spooky. Second: Order decaf and if didn't double check I was served caffeined and it had to be remade. Third AC was off, light too dimmed for a morning coffee Forth: the capitano coffee is mainly milk, nothing special

Angel ..

Yelp
The place and people are nice enough. Ordered a cold Carmel macchiato coffee and breakfast taco. The coffee was enjoyable but the taco was tepid. Barely warm and a bit dry. Would probably not go back
google avatar

Dianna S.

Yelp
Short and sweet, but this place was delicious! Coffee was ULTRA creamy. The MOST creamiest. Excellent flavor, not too sweet but sweet enough for me. I would be a repeat customer if I was a local. Highly recommend! Sincerely, a picky coffee drinker.
google avatar

Tayo F.

Yelp
What a great little soot tucked away in the middle of downtown Austin! It's right by the a-loft hotel which I've been to many times but never really around. I just happened to pass it on a walk and tried it out. The coffee was satisfying but the big pull fir me was the workspace. I could easily spend an entire day on my laptop working there and not notice.
google avatar

Rajiv K.

Yelp
Spacious interior. I enjoyed the oat milk cappuccino. Very creamy, low acidity and bite. I thought this was a very nice coffee. I wish they had some more snack options. I ended up with a plain bagel with strawberry jam. They toasted it, came out as expected. It seems they hosted a lot of specialty events here like improv. I'd pass by again given the opportunity.
google avatar

Minly L.

Yelp
I like this place a latte! The interior is super chill and great for work. The service is super nice. The workers are always ready to help you out! I was in the downtown area and wanted to find a cute place to study. I've had the cold brew here one time and i remember liking it a lot. Today I opted for the Americano and Everything Bagel. The coffee is great, a very robust cup. For black coffee it's creamy with floral notes. The bagel was delicious and toasted perfectly. My friend got the Hazelnut hideout, It's very warm and creamy with a very distinct hazelnut flavor. In my opinion it was super sweet but pretty good. Overall, a super nice place, amazing coffee and bagel! Honestly probably at the top of my list for best coffee shops in Austin.

Yelp
The gramma sandwich here is legit! It's just a simple grilled cheese with tomato but it is so yummy. The coffee here is also quite smooth and aromatic. We ordered a red eye and an almond latte. Both were better than your average coffee and packed a pretty caffeinated kick despite the soft flavor. The ambience of this cafe is crunchy (hip nature-type people) and there are many posters of upcoming improv theater or music shows. I think the patrons of this cafe are in-the-know about the performing arts scene around town. There is a little wooden stage by the windowsill with tables. It's a great place to bask in the sun while sipping on coffee cozily while reading a book. Overall I liked the service, flavor, and atmosphere of this cafe so it gets a 5/5 from me!
google avatar

Oliver B.

Yelp
I wish that I could give them five stars but requiring a mask makes that impossible. I think that they have good coffee and the treats are definitely tasty. I really liked the coffee cake. I'm happy that they are still open after the shutdown. I really miss the cool interior decor. They had cool chairs and now it looks like a standard coffee shop. It's a cool coffee shop and I hope that a little more time will bring back it's former glory(if that is possible). Great coffee shops are hard to come by(we are not in Seattle)and I will hate to lose this place if they remain in 2020. Check them out for yourself and form your own opinion.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Pure nonsense. No order and out of multiple items. You don't find that out until you have waited in a long line even though they have the cute chalkby to give updates. Co worker had the same experience. A big skip and you can just go to Caroline's for caffeine.
google avatar

Elizabeth K.

Yelp
I popped into Hideout on my way to work and got a matcha latte. The interior is nice and chill, it's your typical coffee shop vibe. Maybe I should've opted for a typical latte but the matcha latte was not my favorite. Basically, it wasn't bad but it didn't knock my socks off by any means. As far as the location, it's in the middle of downtown. If you're already in that area, it'll be easy to get to but if that's your first stop plan parking is going to be difficult. COVID Precautions: Masks are "required" but this was not enforced at all.
google avatar

Ami S.

Yelp
Good vibes and yummy coffee.walking down Congress Street and found this little gem. Good place for a coffee lover.

Isabel C.

Yelp
Wow. All I can say is wow. Coffee? Immaculate! -I usually get the honey oat milk latte which is my all time fav, however they were out of honey today so I went with a dirty chai and it is delish yum yum yummm. You know what I mean?? Brittney made my coffee and she made it RIGHT you feel me? Turkey pesto sandwich? BANGER! The red head, erin I think she said was her name?, really knows how to throw together a sandwich I'll tell you what. I am very happy. Taste buds are doing a lil dance you feel me? Great staff. Great vibes. 100/10 you feel me?
google avatar

Yelp
Cute coffee shop. My cappuccino was excellent. Two baristas were extremely friendly, showing they love their work. Amazed about tea, and bake goods also. There were all kinds of the tea leaves in small bottles. He, the barista, even lets us smell the tea leaves from the bottle which had unbelievable aroma. He puts spoonful of tea leaves in a special tea bag for the order! Actually I make my tea that way at home! Quite spacious place with a large window facing the street. There was a ticket booth, which made me wondered whether whey were showing plays in Hideout. Hideout. Good name.

Andrea A.

Yelp
My husband and I were in town for a quick getaway and wanted to grab coffee and a little bite. This place caught our eye as it was close to the Driskill and near the capital bldg. wish I could give it a higher rating, but they were out of milks (not just one type), out of bacon so no breakfast sandwich, out of potatoes, so basically, at 10:30 am, they were out of so many options. Giving it 3 stars because I think the place "could be" good. We just were there on an off day I guess.
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
Very cute and cozy place, especially for the area. It is as it purports to be, a hideout.
google avatar

Joy K.

Yelp
If you want more customers, then focus on customer service and actually stop talking to your co-worker and greet the customers. Was not impressed. I see thus so often now and wonder if people aren't being trained properly, or is it staff doesn't realize how they make someone feel when they walk in determines their tip, or the person ever coming back? Seeing so many homeless downtown is a real turn-off too. I don't like not feeling safe and appreciated seeing a group of cops, but still...
google avatar

Aaron W.

Yelp
Good coffee, chill place! They have all the items that you want and a few pastries and stuff like that as well.

Marylou M.

Yelp
Great service and great mocha coffee. Their matcha latte was also great! Highly recommend recommend! Great ambiance!

Yelp
The Hideout Coffeehouse was hidden, in fact I almost walked pasted it. It was very close to our hotel stay in ATX. The Hideout was closed to inside ordering and seating due to Covid19 TX re-shutdown. They had a window open where you could walk up to and order. They asked for you to wear a mask, which I was doing anyway as TX at the time of this visit was a HOTBED for Covid cases. The employee took the time to explain to me the menu and when ask what his favorite was; he suggested the Hideout Hazelnut Iced! the Iced Hideout Hazelnut was super tasty, partner let me try it. He stopped to get another one during our Bike ride around Downtown ATX and the riverfront. I decided to get an Nitro Cold Brew, with a slash of Oatmilk and SFV vanilla. It didn't disappoint. The next time I'm in ATX, I'll be back for sure. Always support local coffee.
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
A nice place to go for a coffee. I am not a coffee drinker but my daughter is and she said the coffee was top notch.
google avatar

Gustavo R. M.

Yelp
First: Thank you, Hideout, for serving me and accommodating my medical disability despite me not being able to wear a face mask. Onto the drinks: Your coffees are amazing, the cappuccino was so fresh. My brother had the Honey Lavendar, and he LOVED it. Can't wait to come back here next time I'm in Austin! Thank you so much!
