On the Grid : Lord Tredegar

"Not too long ago this pub was a clichéd East London boozer, with trinkets adorning the walls and a somewhat dusty appearance. Gone are those days, a full refurbishment has lightened up the interiors and made the back garden a great place to take in the occasional British sunshine. Typical — albeit high quality — pub food is on offer, as well as all the cask ales and craft beers you'd expect." - Adam Johnson

The Lord Tredegar Review - London - The Infatuation

"A classy, understated, neighbourhood pub, The Lord Tredegar is an excellent place to spend your day. Its garden is green, and a good size, though you’ll have to get there at a decent time on a nice day because it fills up quickly. The menu features some tasty sharing boards alongside some tarted up pub classics. This is an easy choice if you’re around Mile End." - Jake Missing

The best thing is they do half portions of Sunday roasts. Idk why more pubs don't do this as it would encourage people to go out more as it makes it a bit more possible with cost of living pressures for an outing. When booking, it looked like not much is available from 5pm, but when we went, you could have turned up without a booking. I confess on my last visit, I did a full size pork belly and was rather stuffed afterwards. They have an outdoor and conservatory area. It looks lovely. There's usually a bit of a wait at the bar. Staff are friendly. I like coming to The Lord Tredegar because it's got such a chilled vibe and it's off the beaten track.

Absolutely stunning Sunday roast! Not sure why we waited so long to try The Lord Tredegar but it was definitely worth it. We had the roast beef, lamb shank with a side of cauliflower cheese. Generous portion sizes and worth the price! We’ll definitely be back!

This is one of my favourite pubs ever. The service is friendly, the food is great and the selection of drinks is comprehensive. Furthermore the pub itself has a real charm. They do a quiz on Tuesday and a chess night on Wednesday. I cannot recommend more highly!

This is my second visit to this fine establishment. We start off with a warm and friendly greeting from the staff at the bar - Alex and Mary. I recognise Alex from last time as he has impeccable taste in music (contrary to the rest of the teams belief). We are 20 minutes early and thankfully our table inside the pub area is ready. It's in a nice cosy cornerand there are some board games available should we fancy it. There are 3 of us and we've come for the roast and order the Pork, Beef and Lamb individually plus a side of Cauliflower cheese. Being from Yorkshire, I am picky when it comes to roasts. It;'s finding that triple sweet spot of quality, quantity and value. A triumphant fist pump into the air and a round of applause as this hit every part of the above perfectly. I had the lamb roast and it was just joyful. Everything was in perfect measure and the meat was impeccable. I have zero idea how I managed to finish my plate (I am stupidly proud of myself and had a well deserved 2 hour nap in the afternoon) but I was in that 'happy-pain' where it's so delicious you can't stop eating it. We probably didn't need the Cauli-cheese however it had the perfect kick of mustard and it was perfectly cooked. I kinda don't want to go into detail about how fantastic the other plates were as I think you need to go and try it for yourself. Afterwards I went and shook hands with the kitchen and the wonderful staff at the bar. This place is special. If you want a Sunday roast that IS AN ACTUAL SUNDAY ROAST and not one of those loveless pub roasts that resembles a microwave meal, then this is the one. I've never had a better one in London and I've had a Gordon Ramsey one at the now closed York & Albany. Thank you The Lord Tredagar. You are fabulous.

Google
Best and definitely the hugest Sunday roast I have had in London. We had the pork belly and the mixed meat ones. It has an amazing back garden which is lovely on a sunny day. Vibe is friendly and chilled. Will go back soon!

My Sunday visit was a bit of a letdown if I’m honest. Despite plenty of empty tables, most of the pub was reserved for Sunday roasts, leaving nowhere to sit but a broken beer bench, which wasn’t exactly inviting. Taking into account only about a third of the tables were actually occupied, making the policy feel excessive and unwelcoming for a traditional pub (or is it a restaurant??), and shows a lack of floor management skills from the staff. The pub entrance is overshadowed by smelly bins, which isn’t the best first impression. It’s strange why they don’t just hire a proper waste collection service to clear it away every night - especially when the front space could be far better used for outdoor seating on a sunny day (if the neighbours agree…)?? Cask ales not in great condition and Lucky Saint way murkier than should be, plus all served in dirty glasses. Lovely looking pub, but i wont be rushing to come back.

The Lord Tredegar: A Cozy Gem Near Mile End Station The Lord Tredegar is a delightful pub that effortlessly combines charm, warmth, and excellent service. Nestled near Mile End Station, it’s the perfect spot for a laid-back meal or drinks with friends. The first thing you’ll notice is the welcoming ambiance. With a real fireplace crackling away, the pub exudes a cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for chilly evenings. Adding to its unique charm is the resident cat, who can often be found lounging at the bar. Friendly and curious, she gives the pub a character that sets it apart from others in the area. The staff at The Lord Tredegar are exceptional—kind, attentive, and eager to make your visit memorable. They were quick to recommend the grilled chicken burger, and it did not disappoint. Perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, it’s a must-try for anyone stopping by. The drinks menu is equally impressive, offering a variety of beers, wines, and spirits to suit all tastes. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, The Lord Tredegar is a must-visit. Its combination of great food, a cozy setting, and the added charm of a friendly feline makes it a standout choice for a relaxed and enjoyable pub experience. Don’t miss it if you’re in the Mile End area!

Decent small pub. Not a massive selection of beers on tap but a couple of decent selections for this ale lover. It does have an outdoor space which is nice but most of it doesn't really catch the sun and if it did, would be blocked out by the number of parasols covering the table. Not bad for a quick drink but if you're searching for drinking in the sun then not really suitable.

Yelp
The Mac n Cheese was bomb. Beer was smooth. I'm not one for beer but my dad enjoyed it. The interior was much bigger than expected and a nice vibe.

Yelp
If you ever wanted to know where the Queen Mary faculty goes for drinks after lectures this is it. There's a very high chance of meeting a few drunk professors there so if you're a Queen Mary student you may want to keep that in mind. The pub itself is hidden away from the main road near Mile End and it does not look like much from the outside. However, inside its hiding 3 good sized rooms and a garden area so it's ideal for big groups. The staff is friendly and there's a good selection of drinks. The kitchen is exposed at the back room so you can see while your food is prepared. However I did not have anything this time so I can not tell if it's good. I don't think it's a venue you need to go out of your way to get to but if you live in the area you should keep it in mind for when you are looking for a drink.

Yelp
Hidden away only a few streets north of Mile End tube station, The Lord Tredegar really is one to stop in on at any time of the week! Walking in the front door, you're instantly met by an olde world bar flanked by a very traditional setting of bar stools and a fireplace. For me personally, the bar was fantastic! Stocked with all my favourite beers and spirits, and even carrying Leffe and Staropramn on tap! Out behind the bar, you'll find a small yet warm restaurant area leading to a beautifully set conservatory and modern garden area! I've eaten here now several times and have yet to be able to fault any of the food... From the burgers to the belly pork, this place is one of the best informal places to come for good beer, and great food! Oh, and just one more thing... You have to have a go on the jukebox while you're here for the night ;)

Yelp
This hidden gem is one of the East End's best kept secrets. Sandwiched between quiet residential streets, The Lord Tredegar offers you a genuine, no-fuss enjoyable drinking experience. The interior is cosy and warm with lots of brass and wood and comfy seats, a proper pub. A wide range of lagers and ales are available at pretty reasonable prices. The landlord, whose name I forget now, seems like he belongs behind the bar. Really friendly and chatty with a stream of cheesy jokes, he actively seeks to engage with his clientele, not in a trying to fleece you manner but out of a genuine interest. The Tredegar provides outdoor seating and Sky TV, it's the perfect place to watch a football or rugby game if, like me, you actually want to see the screen from your seat.

Yelp
New owners as of November. The previous owner was a chef and you can certainly feel his absence. But the food is ok still and they still do a very hearty roast. There's a couple of share worthy starters like a mackerel pate, chicken liver pate and something with crudités. Make sure you specify if you want these out first. Then there's things like burgers, and depending on the day/weather, shanks or other hearty pub foods. There are some healthier looking bits and pieces but I haven't gone there because: pub. Very much a locals pub, filled with locals. The front bar is lovely and cosy, the back restaurant suits bigger groups in for Sunday lunch. The back is a big lovely beer garden perfect for a Sunday session or a summer after work drink to take advantage of some afternoon sun. And they have an excellent bar to sit at. Would love to see a new beer on their taps sometime. The beers are mainly big guys with a one or two crafties. The wine list is very easy going and easy drinking pub. Can't complain there! There is WIFI in the front bar.

Yelp
Proper looking pub with a decent sized external area, right by the train line, which can be a bit of a shock if you are daydreaming! Between the pub and yard there is a third section that you might call a conservatory, the kitchen is here. Bit dear, the 7 pound cheese plate would have been my choice! The walls are covered with old pictures of UK seaside resorts. Had Fullers summer ale, which was decent. There were 3 other ales from their stable available.

Yelp
Oh, sweet memories are coming back. We used to come to this pub for a soup, meal or just a drink when wandering around Mile End neighbourhood. Nice English vibe, definitely want to come back when in London.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place while walking in the area and it was a very nice surprise. The Lord Tredegar seems really small from the outside but actually has several rooms - a restaurant area, a conservatory and a beer garden! Very near Mile End but hidden from the busy area, this place is lovely for an evening with friends. The music is not too loud, and anyway you can choose it since there is a jukebox (I love jukeboxes!). They have some pretty good lagers and ales. I thought the one with the dragonfly on it (I can't remember the name) was nice. Price is very reasonnableThe staff was friendly enough and even though we didn't try it the food looked really good and they have options to accomodate everyone: burgers, healthy dishes, salmon, vegetarian lasagna... But mainly I'm giving it four stars because I loved the atmosphere. There was even a fireplace, and the seats were comfy, and it felt very British, which I love.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL. lovely little pub hidden away on the back streets of Mile End, I was luck enough to be introduced to this charming little pub. Drinks are cheap-ish (Watch out for the card minimum spend) and though I only treated myself to a plate of oven-baked chips, they were absolutely delicious, and the rest of the menu looked relatively decent prices, especially for London. There's a really nice area out the back for all you smokers. Can get a little busy, and the pubs relatively small- lets call it cosy- so i'd reserve if you're eating, or turn up early if you want a table but its really lovely out back if you can handle the cold TIP-The blankets? The strange wicker bin in the corner? They're provided by the pub for you so take advantage!

Yelp
Sunday lunch, nearby and great reviews. It is a great place. We had the Roast Chicken, when it arrived a big plate of lovely food, in fact so much there wasn't room for pud. Sadly though the main thing that lets the chef and the place down are the staff, they are ill equipped to deal with the customers. No engagement, unsure of processes or procedures, who came in first who came in next, are you sitting outside or inside, they all need a kick up the a**e, get yourself moving, serve people, half hearted service just ain't good enough, buck up, know your bar. The mats must cause the glasses to wobble because one of the staff was checking it wasn't sitting on the corner so that when he poured the wine it didn't topple over, there are markings on the glass to allow for correct measures, but the chap poured the wine and it was a little short, made an attempt to top it up twice and spilt more than he topped up. We came to pay and the queue at the bar was not helped by the slow service. We'd heard mention of the fact we'd got a tab for outside, but as there weren't any tables outside we sat just inside. We asked the waiter if we could have another drink, or do we go to the bar? He served us but we had to wait because he was busy, he was the only person waiting all the tables. He did an amazing job but there's lots to do, clear tables, top up the water jug, set the table, take the orders, provide drinks, take money, have a drink, go to the loo, he was busy. It came to paying and we waited at the bar to pay, it took a long time, all the while one of the bar staff was emptying the rubbish and paying no attention to the customers now three deep, once we did get to pay they'd split the bill, drinks on one number and meals on the other, we could have walked out without paying for the drinks, but we didn't, how many people had been able to do that, that's money walking out of the door! Even the initial drinks hadn't been added to the tab. They need to look at their processes, they need to get their staff engaged with the job at hand and the customers. Things that irritate a punter more than anything is being kept waiting, serving someone who was behind you in the queue, being incompetent at doing the job you're being paid to do. Opportunities were missed, not such a huge plate of food would mean more people have room for a dessert, making sure that tap water is available on a hot day all the time. (You shouldn't need to keep pestering the waiter for it or going to the bar, it slows everything down, if you are providing a water pitcher, ensure it's kept topped up.) Look at the way that your tab system is working, or not as the case may be, people usually like to have another drink, but if they can't get service then they can't drink more, therefore you loose out on additional income. The quicker they are served, the quicker they'll sup up, the quicker they'll come back, the ten minutes they are waiting at the bar is wasted drinking time, less money in the till. Just saying, I've worked on the other side of the bar, I *worked* all the time i was there, I didn't stop, there wasn't time.

Yelp
This is essentially someones front room in Mile End with a bigger TV...and more alcohol...and a faint smell of vomit...and incredibly cold toilets. That said the few times I've been there the landlord has been friendly. It's obviously a pub for the locals and maybe if I didn't go swanning in there, in American Apparel asking for a fruity wine spritzer and talking about the arts the atmosphere would be even friendlier. But if you fancy having an extremely quiet pint and don't look like you're fresh out of art college by all means try it.

Yelp
Really like this pub. Nice staff, good atmosphere and not as pretentious as some of the other pubs close by! Great place for a few pints. Had Sunday lunch there - decent, not amazing.

Yelp
I've lived in Mile end for over three years and on;y this year did I come across this place. Such a lovely pub, right next to the railway bridge so you can watch the trains go by over good food and drink. My bf claims they make the best burgers in London and I'm particle to the butternut squash salad.
