The Ideal Portland Spots to Load Up on Picnic Supplies

"In the far reaches of Hillsboro, the Meating Place is a neighborhood butcher and market with one heck of a deli. Customers can stop in to grab roast beef sandwiches, gouda mac salad, breakfast burritos, and chips from Pacific Northwestern standbys like Tim’s. The Meating Place takes orders by phone, too, for people who just want to grab food and hit the road; Noble Woods Park is a nice spot for a picnic nearby, for those looking for a place to land." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

17 Horizon-Expanding Restaurants in Hillsboro

"A butcher shop with a cafe attached, this casual lunch spot with a touch of country flair serves a solid roster of sandwiches and burgers, including a stellar Reuben with house-smoked pastrami on marbled rye. The shop’s elk burger is another strong choice, arriving topped with provolone and chipotle aioli to stand up to the flavor of the meat. Daily specials feature a Friday cheesesteak slathered in jalapeno cheese sauce and Thursday’s mushroom beef melt with au jus on the side for dipping." - Krista Garcia, Janey Wong

Where to Find Bowls of Captivating Chili in Portland and Beyond - Eater Portland

"This Hillsboro butcher uses a grind of flavorful elk for its chili, which gets its gaminess tempered with the help of fire-roasted tomatoes. It arrives resembling something like a tomato sauce, but its depth of flavor — mostly thanks to the elk — makes it unlike any other version in the Portland area. Order it for takeout." - Maya MacEvoy

Google
Best butcher since leaving Texas! I came in to try and find a good tomahawk steak to grill for my mom's birthday dinner and WOW their selection of cuts in general was amazing but the quality of what we got was a show stopper. The entire staff was kind and the whole place was very clean. I'm originally from Houston and haven't found a good butcher since relocating but this is definitely it!

My friends if you have not experienced the heavenly bliss of the meeting place your taste buds need to go there. They have more than just meat there although their meat is divine and I am not exaggerating. They also have marinades ,sauces, spices, rubs, wine, and if you are a true fan, you can even get the shirt. their staff is very friendly, very nice and it is a very well laid out shop easy for a lot of people to be in all at once and not be a cluster very clean parking lot. Plenty of parking. I do believe it’s handicap accessible, and across the lot, there is also a little restaurant affiliated.

Didn't know that we have this butcher shop near by. Not only do they have many selections of the meat to choose from, they also have this cafe shop to try out their own food from the meat. Will definitely be coming back 😁

Google
Some great products but customer service continues to get worse. Waited 10 minutes to be helped today with a less than 5 customers in the store while numerous employees we’re standing around talking and seemingly on break in the middle of the store. Seems to be a steady trend over the years from great customer service, to good, to okay, to absolutely mediocre.

Google
Oh my !!! I got the turkey cranberry sandwich and it was so good. I will be back. I will say I was disappointed with my coffee since they do not have anything other than raw sugar and regular sugar. As a diabetic, I’ve never been to somewhere that didn’t have a sugar-free option

Google
Hands down best meat ever. They will vaccume seal it and even cut it for you. And the quality. Recently I put Meating Place beef and grocery beef (it was not the cheap grocery store stuff either.) After 2 months I went to cook one of them. The grocery beef was pale and not appetizing it tasted just decent. The Meating Place beef was still that fresh red that only the freshest beef is. It thawed and tasted spectacular! Honestly anytime I take the time to cook meat or poultry in a dish I only use Meating place! They also have a bunch of meat products like livers and oxtail etc that are difficult to find elsewhere! It's really not that pricey either. I 1000% recommend it. I am so spoiled now!

Google
I have been a fan of The Meating Place Butcher Shop and Cafe for quite some time now. The butcher shop never failed to deliver a superior product until last week, when I stopped in to get some of their delicious smoked turkey breast. I took it home and started to make myself a sandwich. The turkey was SO DRY it wouldn't stay in one piece. It was like turkey crumbs. NOT GOOD!!!. I hope this is not a "new and improved" product for them because I will be paying better attention to the product before I pay top dollar for it. PLEASE BRING BACK THE MOIST, SMOKY, TURKEY I USED TO LOVE.

Google
This place is amazing! A friend told us about it and WOW! They have so much, even whole rabbit. We really loved the veal chops, feta chicken sausage and steaks we bought. Didn’t love the Mediterranean lamb sausage. Delightful other purchases includes seasonings and some awesome wine selections! We brought a cooler and filled it up; worth the drive out to this place!

Yelp
This place is stellar! Why didn't they exist when I worked in Hillsboro? Now I find myself trekking out there just to buy high quality meat, and of course, stay and enjoy a meal. First, let's discuss the butcher counter. It's filled with gorgeous prime cuts of regional and imported meats. Lamb from Reister Farms, kobe and waygu beef from Japan, local pork, all cuts of steak from Painted Hills, in-house dried steak, ground elk, beef kabobs, chicken (even seasoned and prepared) house made sausages, bacon, ham, and Dungeness crab when in season. All higher quality than you would find at a grocery store. Because of how they anre raised and fed, they are healthier for you, and yes, you can taste the difference! They even have house made entrees, dips, sides, and sell various salts and rubs. This is my kind of store! The cafe side is equally impressive. Obviously, everything they offer is made from the meat they sell. BBQ pork sandwiches, Cubans, Club sandwiches, killer burgers, French dip with caramelized onions (divine) and the best BLT, especially during the summer when tomatoes are local and in season. They even have daily specials making it even more challenging to make a decision. Now that I've had their Reuben, made with their own house smoke pastrami, topped with melted Swiss, sauerkraut and slathered with thousand island dressing, it's hard for me to order anything else. Its fabulous! And big enough for two! The best option is to go with a friend, each order a different sandwich, and share. Just writing this review is making me hungry. Once the ice and snow melt, I'll be heading out that way!

Yelp
This place was near our hotel, so I decided to check them out. I asked for a sample of the pepperoni and the Jerky. Neither impressed me, but since I didn't want to snack and run I bought pepperoni stick. It was OK, but nothing special. The jerky wasn't jerky, it was candy. It was so full of brown sugar I almost went into sugar shock. For me, jerky is smokey, beefy and salty, save the sugar for your million-dollar bacon. The people here were nice, but not the best butcher I've been to.

Yelp
It's all about the meat! I can't believe how much I love this place because it's literally just a butcher shop - a place where you can buy fresh local meat. But I LOVE it. I really do. I think it's partially the branding and look & feel of the place that give it such a great quality, local, casual, approachable Oregon vibe. Service is friendly, attentive, super helpful, easy. It's easy to get to and there's plenty of parking. On this particular visit, we started out by ordering sandwiches from the Meating Place Cafe and then took a quick walk across the parking lot to the butcher shop to buy bacon, smoke pork chops and pepperoni sticks. I also highly recommend their crab cakes but we didn't buy them on this trip. They carry a variety of meats and bones so I've included a bunch of photos of raw meat which is seems weird but it's meant to be helpful so you'll know what to expect. Lol.

Yelp
I visited TMP Cafe for the first time today. Best Cubano I've ever eaten. I get them anytime they are on a menu anywhere. I'm no James Beard, but I know a Cubano. The best is here.

Yelp
This place is spacious and has a variety of meats. The quality looks to be pretty good and fresh. One of the items I like from here is the jalepeno cheddar pepperoni sticks. It's definitely worth a try.

Yelp
Ok this place is STACKED with every meat, chicken and poultry selections you can possibly eat. Stumbled upon this place while I was working and I tell you what a find Yelpers. I absolutely love a traditional Butcher Shop such as The Meating Place. Definitely recommend and DEFINITELY a return customer. So let it be said.... So let it be BUTCHERED.

Yelp
This place just blew my mind and earned five stars. I have come here for years and drive all the way from SE Portland to do it. We get raw dog food here and it is the best. They also have excellent meat. You can get high quality, local, humanely raised meat here at a good price. The place is clean, there prices fair, and the selection good. What takes it over there top is the service. HOLY COW! I wanted some chicken and was debating on what I wanted. I had settled on bone in thighs as the best balance of price and labor when the butcher offered to cut up a whole bird for me. At no extra cost. Consider the price per pound: boneless/skinless thighs: $9. Bone in: $6 whole bird: $5. Or, 2 chicken quarters, two breasts, 2 wings. PLUS the backbone and wing tips in a bag for stock: $5 a pound. That is amazing!! I knew they were great but this is thrilling! So, buy some meat at the Meating Place and see what you can offer you!!

Yelp
My initial impression when walking in was Wow! This place is clean! No meaty or funky smells, just fresh. Greeted by the employees as I walked around, assistance offered. I was in search of oxtails & was extremely pleased to see the size & freshness of them. I'll definitely be back to grab some fresh sausages & steaks as well. Everything looked fresh & delicious!! Excellent service from Austin. He knew his stuff!!

Yelp
This is the place to go if you want high quality meats. They have an excellent variety - chicken, beef, pork, lamb, elk, oxtail, ham hocks, soup bones, even some of the harder to find cuts of things. The chicken breasts are some of the most tender I've ever had the pleasure to cook (and eat!), and the ground beef is noticeably tastier than what I get at Costco. You get what you pay for and the prices here reflect that, but to me it's worth it for truly excellent meals. You will find more than meat here! They also have a small wine section, and a large collection of BBQ sauces, rubs, salts, and that sort of thing. Just inside the front door is a to-go food section with premade goodies like bacon mac and cheese. Last time I went was on a Saturday and the parking lot was pretty full, but I was able to get what I needed and check out pretty quickly. The staff at each counter were friendly and efficient. I will most definitely return!

Yelp
As a vet they give great discount for us. Outside of that the meat is expertly butchered and amazing. The jerky is also amazing and the fact they are working with local farms makes it the best!

Yelp
Really good selection of meats, in the butcher shop. They have the best jerky ever. Also ate at the cafe the elk chili was great! Everything we ordered was great even the coffee! Pick up a 1/4 beef as well and they were super nice. Everyone was very very welcoming. I like that! Prices are not anymore than anyplace else for this quality of food.

Yelp
First visit today...I've have come here before but the typical 30 minute wait discourages me, today I decided to wait and it was only 15. Got the full Ruben and its a big one! Hot, juicy, crunchy and delicious if not a bit messy. I'll have to come back and try other items from the menu.

Yelp
My favorite place to get out meat from and so much more like their amazing loaded twice baked potatoes and today I got bully sticks for my dogs which they haven't had before. Excited to try the Mac and cheese with bacon they had, service was super friendly. Can't wait to eat out Rib Eye and twice baked potatoes tonight.

Yelp
First visit there was awesome. Walking through the doors was just "wow." A true butcher shop with every type of meat and cut one could need, plus some added items liked twice stuffed potatoes - which were delicious - and smoked salmon dip. Quality cuts of meat and competitively priced. Friendly service. Plenty of parking. While tucked a bit off the beaten path, it's worth the drive for quality meat. We'll definitely shop there again.

Yelp
Great food. Bring your appetite. Takes a little bit of time to get your order when it's busy. Worth the wait.

Yelp
I "used to" make a trip for quality meats but after my last experience. I will not be going back. I do not wear camouflage gear and look like I just came from hunting. I do not deserve to be looked over and passed up when I am waiting for service. It was not a busy time of day either. Today was not the first time. I will stay closer and continue to go to "basics", where my business is appreciated

Yelp
My go to butcher. Since they moved to the bigger building they've put together an incredible collection of options. Lots of unique cuts, plenty of ribeye options, the Dino ribs and flanken ribs always have incredible marbling. Have not tried the pork but it looks amazing. Great jerkey and the best stuffed potatoes. Wife loves the split pea soup. Some of the items are not cheap, so I try not to look at my receipts, but always worth every penny. I've also ordered a few cows from here, and the ground beef makes the best burgers I've ever had (my mom and wife agree. They don't order burgers at restaurants anymore cause mine are better. And it's not my cooking, it's the meat). The pot roast and if they make the jerkey are also great. I'm not a huge fan of grass fed tbones or ribeyes, but they are still good. Getting ready to use the round steaks to make jerkey on my own and expect it will be great. At the start of Covid I gave them a 1 star review due to an online order of a porterhouse that I'd call a NY. The owner disagreed with me and explained the cut in a polite way. You can judge by my photo. I disagreed but I laughed and moved on! So I'd suggest going in instead of an online order, but that's true for any grocery shopping. And if you don't go inside, you are truly missing out at their spectacular display. No matter, they have definitely earned back their 5 star status. Between the meating place and snake river farms, I don't bother going to el gaucho, ringside or any other fancy portland steak houses. The meat is just better here! And do yourself a favor. Grab lunch at the cafe with a pint before picking up your meat here. It will make for a great afternoon

Yelp
Always a great variety of meats available, as well as sides and snacks. They seem to always be fully staffed so the in & out time is generally decent. Most definitely not the cheapest place to pick up a meal, but a go-to for quality meat.
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely my favorite stand alone butcher shop on the westside suburbs. Friendly and knowledgeable staff and a great selection. I always think of it as a candy store for carnivores.
google avatar

Valene D.

Yelp
The meat market, dog treats at checkout, the garlic squeeze sauce inside the fridge, and the sandwich shop next door are all amazing. Go eat before you start shopping and you won't be disappointed with French Dip! Turkey back on avocado is a staple and if you order anything off of the special or seasonal menu you can't go wrong.

Yelp
I will definitely go back for choice cuts of meat and friendly staff! Although the meat is by no means cheap, the cuts look very fresh and the staff are really willing to go out of their way to help out. We called in ahead to ask if they had what we needed (pork fat), and although they did not have the exact item, they went out of their way to obtain it by cutting it off other portions of available meats. We had already contacted numerous other places, and none of them had this item, either, but this location was the only place that provided additional support and were extra-helpful. Additionally, they did advise us as well that because the request for this item is relatively rare, they recommend that we call ahead in the future to put in a request so that they can place an order. When we went in to get our order, it was very quick and efficient, and we were checked out within 7 min of entering the store. Their meat selection also looked great, and very fresh. Can't wait to return and try out other cuts!

Belial H.

Yelp
If your a meat eater you could get lost in this place. Stopped to grab treats for the office and ended up about $150 lighter. Pepperoni and summer sausages were outstanding. The crew were fighting over the treats. Everytime someone gets over that way they swing in. Can't go 5 stars until I try more goodies but outstanding so far.

Yelp
Great quality meats!! Ground elk, Wagyu, aged meats. This ship has it all with a nice restaurant next door

Yelp
The only negative thing I have to say about this place is how far it is from where I live. With that being said, I make the hour long round trip once a month and stock up. My vacuum sealer gets a lot of work on those days. The meat is the best you will find, your neighborhood grocery store or Costco simply cannot compare. Also the price for the high quality meat is unbeatable. There are also very good assortments of salts, hot and bbq sauce, and dog treats. My partner and I have tried so many new meats and cuts since we've been going here and all I can say is, BRING BACK THE SQUAB. Also don't forget to stop at the cafe and snag yourself an amazing sandwich. Consider placing your order before you shop since the cafe is always busy and for obvious reasons, the food is delicious.

J M.

Yelp
Terrible and avoid this place at all costs. I would've rated this place with zero stars but that's not an option. Their customer service is the worst. I have tried to find a friendly person here and have been unsuccessful each time. Each interaction with the staff is dreadful. It's like I am doing them a favor by shopping there. Basics Market is a far better option. Don't special order anything, they will ruin the order. Just to add context, I emailed a picture of the cut of meat I needed for beef Wellington and they gave me two pieces strung together. After I asked about it, they said, "well you don't have to purchase it." Yeah- or you could've got my order correct and not wasted my time coming down here.

Patti D.

Yelp
love this place. Best butcher shop in the NW. The bologna leaves me speechless. However, the customer service is borderline insulting.. Not one smile, actually rude. From the minute I walked in until I left, no one said hi. Just blank faces, what do want? How much do you want? put it on the counter and walked away. Check out was the same, do you want a bag? paid, not even a thank you.....Will be difficult to return....

Lin Z.

Yelp
Our dog started raw food from the meating place earlier this year, however, recently, our dog started having diarrhea. After antibiotics, he went back to their raw food (no other food), after 2-3 days, diarrhea came back. I called to ask info about it, they basically told me that the formula is the same, and my dog might have allergy, did not even asking for my phone number for following up. Now I have many raw food left that is going to the garbage. Their latest raw food for dog definitely have some kind of problem.
