14 Best Bakeries in San Jose and the South Bay Area | Eater SF

"The Midwife and the Baker is a whole grain bakery that bakes all its bread and pastries with flour that’s milled in-house. As the name suggests, the bakery was founded by a baker and his spouse, who worked as a homebirth midwife. They started selling their bread at the Fort Mason Farmers’ Market in San Francisco. Now, they bake in their own facility in Mountain View, and their bread is served at cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores all over the region. The sesame whole wheat consistently sells out, while fans love the Kamut baguette due to its notably deep, buttery flavor. In terms of pastries, the traditional croissant and the sticky bun are well-liked." - Cathy Park

The Best Croissants in SF | Eater SF

"Working out of a warehouse in Mountain View, the Midwife and the Baker is open for walkups and is known for freshly milling their own flour — no small feat and a serious commitment to local grains. The traditional butter croissant is the crowd favorite, but check out the bakery’s everything croissant, as well as the cardamom version." - Becky Duffett

The Best Sourdough Bakeries in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Right in Google’s backyard, in a former Acme warehouse, the Midwife and the Baker is the highest volume bakery that’s milling its own flour in the Bay Area, grinding thousands of pounds of grains every week. Thomas “Mac” McConnell was an instructor at the San Francisco Baking Institute before taking on this challenge, and his bread is wildly flavorful and consistently beautiful. Order online to pick up or keep an eye out at local coffee shops." - Lauren Saria

This place has the kind of charm that makes you want to become a regular. The service is consistently warm, attentive, and friendly — you can tell the staff really care about the craft and the customers. Parking, unfortunately, is the only real downside. It’s limited and can be frustrating, especially during peak hours. That said, once you step inside and take a bite of what they’re serving, it’s easy to forget the hassle. The French baguette is the absolute standout. It’s everything you want in a baguette — crackly on the outside, fluffy yet slightly chewy inside, and bursting with the kind of deep, toasty flour flavor that only comes from using high-quality ingredients and a skilled baking process. You can taste the fermentation and craftsmanship in every bite. It’s the kind of bread that doesn’t need anything else — just tear off a piece and enjoy. If you’re a fan of naturally leavened breads or just appreciate well-made food, this place should be on your radar. Worth the detour, even with the parking woes.

I needed someplace for a quick breakfast before going to the Santa Clara county convention center and this place popped up. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I had a wonderful Everything Croissant and latte. Lots of options and the breads looked amazing! The outdoor seating filled up quickly but a lot of people took their delicious baked goods home with them. What a great find!

Google
It was our first time here and they did not disappoint! They close early so make sure to show up early. They don't have drinks everyday so keep that in mind as it's a third party vendor and they only open up Thursday-Sunday. They do have a water station. A coffee would have been amazing with the pastries. I wish it was closer to our hotel so we can stop by more often. We will definitely stop by here again on another trip.

Google
Love it here. Savory pastries, friendly staff. For now the most favorite item is the almond croissant and scones. The pastries are so popular that there is a short line waiting even at 7.04am sharp over a Saturday morning! Definitely will come visit soon again.

Google
Standing in real bakery business 👌. Staff suggested different types of bread based on what I wanted to do. They open and willing to explain their processes. Everything that I tried was superb, smooth, silky and tasty. So tasty I took some bread back to the east coast for later. Coffee in the van is amazing too, they take the time to craft your coffe with love, so if you are in a rush, please skip it. Looking forward to come back!

Google
I've always enjoyed their baked goods until today. My favorite treat is their sticky bun, but this time they were seriously over baked and burnt. Not sure I'm willing to return after this disaster. The attached pictures show one cut in half.

Google
Hella good. I’ve been wanting to try this place forever but every time I’m in the area, they’re either closed for the holidays or they’re just closed in general. I finally got a chance to stop by and let me tell you, phenomenal croissants! I got the ham and cheese croissant, chocolate croissant, and the apple danish. All the croissants are super flaky and delicious and that apple danish was to die for. The only downside is it’s not really set up like a “cafe” and coffee is only available on certain days and hours are limited (I think they close by 2 pm). Other than that, pastries are 10/10 and I will definitely come again.

Google
We are so lucky to have this gem in Mountain View! Every time I visit, I’m blown away by the quality of their bread, pastries, and the warm customer service. Everything is consistently fresh, delicious, and clearly made with care. Their breads are exceptional — crisp on the outside, soft and flavorful on the inside — truly some of the best I’ve had outside of France. As someone born and raised in Paris, I have high standards when it comes to bread, and this place exceeds them every time. They also have a cute little mobile coffee truck on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Don’t miss it — their coffee is just as wonderful as their baked goods. If you’re in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by. You won’t be disappointed!

Yelp
The Midwife and the Baker has been a hidden gem for us over the last several years. Whether you're a first-timer or a regular, it's worth noting: show up early, or risk missing out on your favorite items--they sell out quickly! While they've added a couple of tables to the warehouse style location, our favorite tradition is making it a pit stop on the way to the city. There's something special about enjoying their delicious pastries and perfectly flaky croissants during the journey. We've tried almost everything here, and nothing disappoints. Most recently, we gave their sliced bread a shot, and it was just as incredible as all their other offerings--fresh, flavorful, and a testament to their craft. If you're looking for top-notch baked goods, this place is a must-visit. Just don't forget to get there early!

Yelp
WOW! Just Wow. Dropped by Monday at 10:30am, and luckily the line wasn't long. What we got: - Blueberry Danish ~with ginger tucked into the blueberry custardy filling, this pastry was a great grab! A nice slightly sweet with warm spices to start the day! - Ham and Cheese Croissant ~crunchy layers on the outside and slightly fluffy layers on the inside, this pastry was well balanced with the savory ham inside. A classic. With some tables on the side, we snagged one in the sun and were able to chow down. Note: If you're lucky and come at the perfect time, almond croissants freshly made are available. While eating, the cashier revealed the almond croissants were just made available. From the nearby customers who snagged one, I overheard that they were still warm and really good. A cute rustic place that is now my go-to place for pastries in South Bay! Will return!

Yelp
Usually the sign of a long line means for a bakery means great food and they did not disappoint. I think I've tried almost everything here at this point, the demi baguette, country loaves, focaccia, croissants, etc. You literally cannot go wrong with anything. Above all, the fresh focaccia is a must-try. Some might not call the focaccia as it is, and I would partially agree with that. It's more like a Detroit-style pizza with all the extra toppings they have. Don't be daunted by the lines!! Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Fresh bread and bakes a gem spot! They close early and usually there is a line on weekends and sell out quickly so if you want to try their new flavors get in early. I love that their menu changes with the seasons so it keeps always exciting to try new flavors. They also one of kind that makes fresh panettone during this time.

Yelp
Came here on a Monday morning with some friends! We got the blueberry danish, almond croissant, the ham and cheese croissant, and the walnut currant bread! The almond croissant was nice and flakey, while soft on the inside. The blueberry danish was my favorite - loved the flavor combination of the blueberries and the custard filling. We all loved the walnut current loaf - it was soft and flavorful with a little bit of sweetness from the currants! The staff was very friendly and they have outdoor seating too, which is nice! They had a coffee station, but it wasn't open for some reason, so they only had drip coffee. Will definitely be back again!

Yelp
A hidden gem! Tucked away in a residential area, I'm so glad I found this place. I got: - Almond croissant: This was perfectly flaky and crunchy, with just the right sweetness and nuttiness from the almond paste. - Frangi twist: I wasn't sure what to expect, but I loved it! The braided bread twisted with chocolate and a light dusting of sugar was delicious. - Blueberry danish: My favorite! The pastry was soft and buttery, and the blueberries were juicy and fresh. I arrived at ~11am on a Saturday and they still had a good selection of pastries available, but all their tables were occupied. I'll definitely be back to try more of their pastries!
google avatar

Yelp
This bakery is SO cute! They make all of the bread fresh, so I would definitely recommend stopping by earlier in the morning. There is a small display of available pastries/items for the day, and they do have a seasonal menu too so check out those items if you're curious! I wanted to try their almond croissant, so I ordered a few of those for my friends and me to share. The croissant was baked really well! I enjoyed the light, fluffy texture on the inside and the crisp exterior. They were generous with the almonds placed on top, and the flavors integrated into the pastry were really fresh! The powdered sugar coating can definitely get messy, so be prepared if you are wearing something nice. I didn't get to try the other items I ordered, but my friends really enjoyed the strawberry danish and cardamom bun I bought them!

Yelp
Wow! Blown away by the pastries here. Stopped in on a Saturday morning and there was a big line. However, they know how to run a good operation. The line moves quick, things are ready to carry out. The ham and cheese pastry was probably our very favorite, followed by the chocolate sourdough. I'll be dreaming of those two. We also tried the plain and chocolate croissants. The flakey layers of the croissant truly are unmatched. Tried the pumpkin pastry and it was full of what tasted almost like straight pumpkin puree, if that's your thing. Stop in here. A fabulous find in the area!

Yelp
One of the few bakeries that do croissant and pastries right. Love the almond croissant and seasonal danish. Always grab a bunch whenever I pass by!

Yelp
I can't speak to the actual store experience, but I found the Midwife and the Baker at a morning farmer's market in SF. I wasn't sure what I wanted so I asked the staff for recommendations and I was not disappointed. I ended up getting the cardamom croissant, which I've actually never had before, and I was really happy with my choice. Since I didn't have anything cardamom before, they described it as a flavor similar to chai. Aside from the flavor, the croissant itself was crispy and very good considering it was laid out for a while at the market. I'm thinking it would be even better fresh! Would totally recommend their pastries!
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
Peach Danish: Tartness and just right amount of sweetness. Love the crispness and flakiness from the pastry dough. Clearly freshly baked. Blackberry Danish: Same crispness and flakiness from the pastry dough. The cream paired well with the blackberries. Ambience and Service: No line and great service. Provided a brown bag for the two bags. You order by the side of the place which is more of a popup. There tables and chairs and a nearby truck with coffee

Yelp
One of my favorite bakeries in the bay. Parking can be tricky (might have to walk a block or two), but the folks there are friendly + the pastries are solid. Would recommend the almond croissant, the everything pull-apart, the pumpkin muffin (seasonal), and the passionfruit danish (seasonal). They have some outdoor seating available now, so when the weather is nice out, it's a solid spot to go grab pastries and catch up with friends.

Yelp
I've had the midwife and the baker at farmers markets before and quite enjoyed their pastries. My friend let me know that they had a more permanent location as well, and what a hidden gem in a pretty industrial neighborhood! They had plenty of pastries left at 10AM despite it being hopping! I also really liked that they had a coffee truck on site to complement their offerings and to keep the pastry line moving quickly. I had a frangipane twist which looked delightful and had perfect layers, but I was left wishing for a stronger flavor of either almond or chocolate, which were both in the filling. Note that if you can't find a seat on the cute patio, there is a small city park just down the street with additional seating.
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
Delicious pastries! There was a pretty long line when we arrived, some come early for first picks of their full selection. Service was very friendly and efficient. There are some tables outside but we took our pastries to the nearby park to enjoy. We'll be back!

Yelp
I tried 3 kind of croissants. All very good. Buttery and flaky. The baker choice was fresh and warm. It was excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent flaky bread items, but how is there nothing to drink here? We asked for a plain coffee and they said they had nothing of the sort. Odd because there are reviews with coffee here from this week. The everything roll was divine. The ham croissant was pretty good. Waiting to dig into the olive bread. Seating is all outside and picnic-like. Parking was a bit hard to find on the street. Very strange place for a baker to locate but hey, seems to work for them as they were mostly sold out of goods!

Yelp
I wish I could have liked this place more but unfortunately, felt that the products fell short of expectations. To start, the location of this place is in a more sketchy area of town. Parking is also difficult to find since a lot of the spots are taken up by trailers. The staff wasn't all too friendly, and seemingly curt when I placed my order. I had questions about what some items were; maybe silly ones like what is cardamom, but regardless, questions are questions. The croissant was neither crunchy nor flakey. They tasted just a little soggy, but lacking the rich buttery taste. The other items were really rich in spice flavor, which didn't appeal to me or hubby or our toddler. There was a coffee store right next to the bakery, and the line was super long for coffee. Unfortunately, the coffee was also just mediocre. Prolly won't go back as there are better bakeries in the area.

Yelp
Dropped by on a Tuesday afternoon! This spot is pretty hidden, but even around 12pm on a weekday there was a consistent influx of customers. It's near Costco so I predict this will be a new go-to spot after shopping! There's a cute seating area outside, and you order at the window! The lady was so sweet and visibly passionate about each of the pastries. We got: - chocolate croissant - peach seasonal danish - cardamom croissant - almond croissant (the famous one!) almond croissant was definitely worth the hype. so rich, dense but also flaky - it was a hefty pastry! it was smothered in shaved almonds and had such a nice balance between sweetness from the mascarpone and nuttiness from the almond. Definitely recommend. This is a must try if you come. The chocolate croissant was very nice and airy. The layers were fantastic, although i do wish there was more chocolate. The cardamom pastry had very subtle hints of cardamom. The pastry itself was extremely soft and pleasant, but I wish there was a stronger taste. The peach danish was amazing! Crisp on the outside, peaches + cream on the inside... I recommend this one as well!

Yelp
Tried their chocolate chip cookies - whole wheat. Very tasty and the whole wheat doesn't overwhelm the cookie. No wait during the weekend around 8am.

Yelp
We had the opportunity to visit this place as my cousin set up a food tour for my daughter's birthday since she loves food. I didn't realize how different this place is. It's located in a residential area and a bit hidden since there is no parking. Parked on the streets and walked over. Love the outdoor atmosphere. There is some sitting areas. We got there before 9:30 am so lots of choices to pick from. But after we ordered. The place got packed! They also have a coffee truck in front. Line was long there as well. We ordered: - almond croissant: so flaky, crispy and lots of almonds and filled with a lot of frangipane - ham and cheese - chocolate croissant: thin layer of chocolate at the bottom of the croissant - peaches and cream special for the day: so creamy - cardamom croissant: very flaky, crispy - everything croissant: tasted more like a hollow bread All were very good. My favorites were the almond croissant and peaches and cream special. Definitely will be back again. May try their coffee next time.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Love the almond croissant here. Other favorites: seasonal danish, frangi twist, cardamom bun. Lots of seasonal offerings as well - usually the danish with different fruits. Staff is friendly and service is quick. There's some outdoor seating for you to sit and enjoy your pastries - super nice when the weather is good. They also have pop-ups from Rozmary Kitchen on Friday and coffee on certain days of the week. Street parking in a semi-residential area, there's a lot of trailers so it can be difficult if you come when it's busy. There's always a line on the weekend and they run out of things, so come early!
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely pumpkin pastry, wheat chocolate chip cookies, and molasses ginger cookies. Unique and yum!

Yelp
I passed this place for years on my way to work and decided to finally try them a few months ago. They did no disappoint The online menu doesn't show everything they have at the shop. It's a smaller spot kind of hidden by a bunch of trees and bushes on a corner. The person taking orders is always super friendly which is a huge plus and always smells good walking up. I've had the chocolate, almond and ham and cheese croissants. My co worker has tried a few more and she says they are amazing very time we get something from here. They also have a barista who does coffee and hit chocolate. Prices are about 4-6 depending what you get, but worth it. The croissants are so soft the flakes fall apart on touch, they're so fresh and good!

Mr P.

Yelp
I've been visiting this spot for a few years now and return specifically for their sticky buns as they're the only place I know that does them right... most of the time. It's either wonderful or burnt. Also please be careful if you order anything with olives. Bit right into a pit and nearly cracked my tooth.
google avatar

Sam Q.

Yelp
I tried the ham and cheese croissant and the almond croissant. One thing to note is that they were both somewhat cold when I purchased them (around 11am) - with that said, the texture remained impeccable. The ham and cheese was forgettable - it was fine but not standout. The almond croissant was better and had both good flavor and decent amount of filling. Overall good

Yelp
The Midwife and The Baker is a charming outdoor bakery that's perfect for basking in beautiful weather these days. While it's a shame they're only outdoors, the ambiance is unbeatable when the skies are clear. As a local, I've found it tricky to visit during the week due to their early closure at 2 pm, but it's worth planning a visit on weekends despite the crowds. Their bakery items are simply divine - the bread is wonderfully flaky and fresh, and I've developed a newfound love for their cardamom croissant, while my husband swears by their olive loaf. But the real star of the show? The flat white coffee with oat milk - an absolute delight that kickstarts my mornings perfectly. The Midwife and The Baker has undoubtedly earned its place as my go-to spot for delectable treats and exceptional coffee.

Coco C.

Yelp
Love the blueberry danish , not too sweet. I thought cardamom croissant is savory, in fact it has little bit sugar glazed, tasty. Kids love the sticky buns. I am sure if I toasted the almond croissant a little bit, it will be very delicious, when it was cold it was hard to chew. Hard to find a parking slot on a weekday morning. No coffee stand....
google avatar

Jasmine G.

Yelp
Despite the high reviews, my experience at this place was just okay. Waiting in line for about 15 minutes on a Sunday morning, I had high hopes for their croissant, only to find it disappointing and cold. Honestly, the drive and wait weren't worth it. There are plenty of other bakeries with similar offerings, and I've found better quality elsewhere. While I wanted to love this spot, Arsicault Bakery wins hands down with warm, delicious bread available in under 5 minutes. They do have interesting flavors like the Cardamom Croissant (this one was the only good one) that is worth a try. However, I probably won't be back because it isn't worth the wait for a mediocre croissant.

Yelp
After quite a few of my standout crossiant places in the Bay Area closed in the last few years, I've been scowering Yelp for another option. The Midwife and the Baker always came up with rave reviews since it opened so I decided to give it a try. The crossiants have a nice flaky, buttery crust and a generous chocolate center. I definitely enjoyed the texture and was glad they do not add sugar to the top crust. Sugary pasteries seem to be trending, but I prefer not too sweet pasteries so their version is perfect for me. While not a gripe, I kind of feel sad for the staff because the folks working there never seem happy or at least enjoying their craft. I've been there a few times now and the vibe is kind of off, but since the crossiants are good I'll keep supporting when in the area. It's rare for me to say that and hope for the staff/owner's sake everything is alright.

Yelp
We love visiting The Midwife and the Baker on our Fridays off. They have a super casual outdoor space that has been slowly expanding with increased seating. It started with a picnic table, and now they have two standing only two-tops, and six regular height round plastic tables with plastic chairs and shade cloth. It's a super chill spot that I believe was born from the pandemic. Pre pandemic, it was a mainly a wholesale seller, but individuals could knock on the double doors and buy loaves of bread off the baker racks. The food: Everything is good! My favorites: Ginger molasses cookie Curry Squash Focaccia Seasonal danish Croissant Almond croissant Kouign Amann Scone Sticky bun Sourdough starter
google avatar

Angel L.

Yelp
Incredibly soft and delicate chocolate frangi twist, covered in sugar. The chocolate inside wasn't too hard, as baked-in chocolate tends to be, which was really lovely. Highly recommend!
google avatar

kavitha h.

Yelp
I love this bakery. Their loaf of olive bread is super good. All their pastries are fresh baked. They open early and get sold out as the day goes by. Some days the lines are huge.
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
Totally had another pastry binge with these. My mom brought these back so I can't comment on the service or interior. Almond croissant- light, flaky, amazing, good amount of filling. Ham & Cheese Croissant - same, flaky, buttery, savory. (Gingerbread?) Scone - mmmm! Pumpkin Muffin - incredible dense, moist, spiced. Omg wow I am full but it was so worth.

Yelp
Discovered The Midwife and the Baker at the MTV Farmers Market in 2017/2018. Really enjoyed their bread, and having access to a good, naturally leavened bread in the South Bay. Good amount of hydration, tasty flavor. 2020-2021 they expanded and changed. The bread wasn't what I used to enjoy, at some point they didn't sell the double chocolate croissant anymore (was one of my faves), so I stopped buying their products. I made the mistake of buying a loaf at Whole Foods at some point out of convenience and the loaf was inedibly hard and stale day of purchase. Not necessarily on them (who knows how long WF leaves that bread out) but didn't entice me to buy their products for a while. Fast forward to yesterday, I decided to give them another try. Around 1050AM they were sold out of many of their breads and pastries (expected). We were able to buy 2 almond croissants and a loaf of country white. We ate the croissants there at a table outside, and IMO they were dry and lacking flavor. Too dry. Good amount of almonds on top but the croissant itself seemed like they cut back on butter in the dough and almond cream filling, plus there wasn't much filling inside the croissant. Later that same day, I sliced the country loaf at home. Again, dry (crumb), and to boot poorly shaped pre-bake and a tighter crumb from what I remember years ago. The loaf also weighed 2/3 of other loaves I buy from local bakeries where I'm charged $10-11. I understand businesses change with time and expansion but these are in the wrong direction for me. I miss the old Midwife. It's not for me anymore.

Yelp
Did a whole bakery haul here. Everything we got here we absolutely devoured. This is an incredible bakery and I will definitely be back!! So many tasty treats that I'm still thinking about. Definitely get these: Almond croissant. Super flakey and the almond paste was not too sweet. 9/10! The everything croissant / muffin -- it was crispy , the toppings were great. Amazing savory pastry. The sticky bun was great too! Def on the sweeter side. The baguette, the sunflower seed croissant were also honorable mentions. Latte was good but standard.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Saturday morning and wasn't too busy. Friendly staff. Pastries always fresh and delicious. I always get their signature almond crossaint and their sticky bun. Seasonal scones are also delicious. They are also located and several of the Bay Area farmers market. I've seen them at the California Ave one in Palo Alto.

Yelp
Ooof good stuff! But unfortunately no coffee. Wonderful spot amazing bread. The fresh loaves are to die for.

Yelp
I love finding good bakeries in new spots! This gets added to my list of spots to revisit. The Midwife and the Baker is this unassuming bakery with amazing looking baked goods. Their cardamom croissant is THAT good, yes I said it!!

Yelp
Cardamom croissant was perfection. Tasty latte. Fairly long line when I went Friday mid-morning, but it moved fairly quickly. Outdoor patio seating. Would happily try more baked goods!

Yelp
Ruined for life- I've been spoiled with excellence! Hands down the best bread I have had in years! From the bagels to sandwich loaves, melt in your mouth flakey croissants and crispy exterior heavenly soft interior baguettes... I cannot express how utterly amazing this bakery is! Their loaves and baguettes are also sold at Draeger's in downtown Los Altos! Stop by you will not be disappointed, but be ready to be ruined for life!

Yelp
Stopped in for an early breakfast before doing some site seeing. They have a nice outdoor seating area with plenty of tables. I had a sticky bun and a scone and they were both very good. Would recommend it if you're in the area.

Yelp
The midwife and the baker is an awesome bakery with a variety of pastries and croissant. We got the garlic knot, cardamon croissant and regular croissant. All the food here was so fresh and fantastic. It was nice crispy, flaky, and full of flavor. The cardamom croissant is a unique flavor, and I highly enjoyed it. My only disappointment, which is in myself is that I should have gotten a coffee to pair it with. This place has a bunch of outdoor seating as well. I recommend the spot and will hopefully be back to try all the other pastries.
google avatar

Yelp
Midwife and the Baker bread is the fuel behind my girl dinners. I've tried the seeded white bread and the country white bread now, and both were such amazing feats of bakery. Perfect paired with cheese, with butter...anything goes. Enjoyed thoroughly! I am also a big fan of their croissants: the regular croissant is packed with layers and is definitely worth a try. This is my go-to bread when I can get it for making...bread-y stuff. Would recommend for your girl dinner / sandwich / open-faced sandwich / toast needs!

Yelp
There's no parking lot here, so you have to deal with parallel parking on the street. The neighborhood looks safe, even with the (ahem) RVs parked on the street and other very interesting "perks" in the area. I thought the location was hard to find, but there is a huge sign on the corner pinpointing the bakery! It is a corner location, with the containing lot being much bigger than the bakery itself. It is very odd, it makes the bakery look like a hole in the wall in a parking lot. I got the Ham and Cheese Croissant, Traditional Croissant, and the Passionfruit Danish. The lady working the cashier was nice and sweet. Just like their danish. They're all just alllllriiiggght. I wouldn't go back- if I wanted good bread / pastries in an interesting location, I think Downtown San Jose fits the bill better XD And oh my the prices. It's definitely South Bay techie prices.

Yelp
My husband and I loved this place, we stopped here every time we're in the area. Yesterday was not just a difference in service but also the food quality. We ordered three muffins, a danish, and a baguette. Nothing was placed in individual bags like we asked, we always take some to my parents. We had to ask the gentleman for small bags, once I started taking the items out off the bag, I noticed the muffins at the bottom of the bag were squished. Not only we're the squished because he just threw them in the bag, but also because they seemed to be under baked. I mean we normally get them and they are toasty and firm. Yesterday they were on the lighter side and super soft. After spending over$30 for pastries and a coffee and not enjoying them makes me not want to back again

Yelp
I just realized I haven't left a review for their actual location. For years, we've been getting their pastries at various other places (usually Sigona's for me), but you can go straight to the source in the morning! They have a lot of special items that aren't available at the other retail places carrying their breads and pastries. The go to bread for us is the olive loaf, but my favorites that I've only seen at their actual baking location are: - Mini olive fougasse: only $2 each, well seasoned, great crust and filling, lots of olives - Garlic knot: my favorite of their savory pastries, only $4 (versus $6 for the ham and cheese, which is also great) - Everything croissant: shaped into a muffin / roll shape, $3 We always reheat the pastries at home. Also - payment is card only here, and there's no option for tipping!

Yelp
My review today is THE REASON why Yelp has the "update review" feature as you will soon see. I am kicking myself in the foot for not reviewing this place when I first discovered it many years ago. It would have then made complete sense why I am giving this place four as opposed to five stars but I will try to explain as thoroughly as I can in the below review. If I were writing this review before the pandemic... actually... even two years ago now that I think about it, it would be a glowing five star review. The pastries were phenomenal and it was totally self-explanatory how this place earned the reputation as one the best places to get a croissant in the Bay Area. I was actually probably one of their OG customers as I had first discovered their pastries when they were being sold out of a cafe I visited in Cupertino many years ago and then came here straight afterwards when I saw the location and barely anyone was visiting here at the time as they barely started selling to the public. Since that time, I was a loyal customer for many years getting pretty much everything under the sun. However, I am sad to say that over the past year or two, I have noticed a considerable number of changes that have made me not come here as frequently. First of all, they no longer sell their focaccia, which was one of my favorite items here. They also no longer have their in-house barista that they added a few years back. From what I hears, it seemed like the county and/or city came all over them and they need to have a special permit to be able to have both features. I COMPLETELY understand that this regulation is not their fault and the motto of government is "no fun allowed" but considerable time has passed and they still don't sell their focaccia. I would think that they would have had the opportunity to obtain a permit by now. That being said, it's not just the focaccia and coffee. During Thanksgiving, they would sell the most AMAZING pies. Quite frankly, it was my favorite pecan and pumpkin pies that I have ever had in my life. For the past couple of years, they have not been offering those. I have also noticed that they have considerable less variety in their pastries as they once did a couple years ago. They seem to offer the same things all the time and it gets boring after a bit. I still think that this place is the best to get a croissant and a number of other items, which is why I will still give it a positive four star review but again, please keep in mind that this place would have had a five star review almost two years ago. I really hope that things may change so that I can come here as frequently as I did two years ago.

Yelp
Stopped by on our way home after seeing so many great reviews. We ordered 2 drinks, 2 ham and cheese croissants, chocolate croissant, 2 focaccia's, and a muffin. Overall everything was good except for the muffin, we were not fans. The croissants were solid and a great breakfast. There aren't many tables to sit and there is no shade. We took everything to go, but it would have been great to have somewhere to eat there. While everything was good, it was a bit pricey for bread.

Yelp
Got here at 7:15 am on Friday and there was a bit of a line but I was able to order in 10 minutes! I wanted to try the Gibassier but they said it wouldn't be out until 9am, just a heads up for anyone else who's interested. -Almond Croissant: 6/5 I've never had an almond croissant before but this was the best croissant I've ever had in my life. The almond paste inside elevated the entire experience. Make sure you have something to catch the almonds and flaky layers flying everywhere as you eat. My favorite item of this batch -Blueberry Danish (special): 5/5 They used some kind of custard for the filling, which was delicious since it reminded me of egg tart. Once you go past the crust, you reach the middle with plenty of filling and thin flaky layers at the bottom--a good ratio imo. Blueberries were also fresh -Maple Oat Scone (seasonal): 4/5 Loved the frosting and the texture was perfectly crumbly and not too dry. But I found the taste of the scone itself a little too plain for my liking Staff was super nice. Worth the early arrival here, especially since it seems like they sell out of popular items later through the morning.
