I've been to the Mission in Old Town quite a few times, often in combination by taking international friends and families, colleagues and friends coming to Scottsdale.
Food has historically always been relatively good, and as a family we loved to go for brunch.
Recently though, and especially today, service, as well as the quality of food had significantly declined.
Sure, the chips on my chair from a previous guest, or there fact that the bench that my guests were sitting on was wet was just a minor issue. The slowness in taking our order, the fact that it took 15 minutes from sitting down to seeing a server and place an order is also a minor service issue.
As I asked the host what was off with service, she sent over a manager, which I didn't really ask for, I just wanted to understand what happened
The manager apologized for the table being dirty, which we hadn't even noticed, and claimed that I must be confused about the fact that they offer chips and salsa to their guests, even before they take their order. In her words: "In 16 years we have never offered chips and salsa unless the guests order the $18 table side guacamole (which I had before, but none of my guests today would like)
As I explained to her, "at any occasion that I have been here, we had chips and salsa, complimentary like you read in some reviews here, even recalling a visit with an Australian colleague months ago", and often times we ordered the tableside to go with it.
Other tables had chips and salsa too, so I am not sure what she was trying to tell us.
As our lunch items came out, my guests rated the salad with chicken as average, my daughter's steak tacos were very dry, and I was looking forward to enjoy the Peruvian clam stew, rock shrimp, chorizo, aji amarillo, known as Almejas Al Vapor.
As it was served it looked like it had swerved across the 101 loop before it got to our table and had 2 clams, 2.5 shrimp and 2 pieces of chorizo in it, with overall appearance and taste not that appetizing.
As we nearly completed our meal, server came over, slapped the bill on the table with the words "Whenever you feel ready" .
So I pulled out my credit card and put it in, and it took yet another 10 minutes for it to be collected.
As I am not going to blame the server for potentially having an "off day" we still added $19 and change to our $88 and change bill to make it a round $108, so I guess we tipped relatively ok for service received, while we potentially could have been upsold to dessert if asked for.
What actually bothers me the most is that the manager lied to me about the overall price experience and her claim that in 16 years they never offered any chips and salsa to their guests is false!
Sure we did get chips and salsa, but it doesn't take away from their lack of integrity that they likely had a service issue or the overall dining experience has changed and they no longer offer it.
So I am sorry to say Mission Old Town, after some great experiences throughout the years, and some minor challenges, I can't get past being lied to, and will take my business elsewhere when touring local or visiting guests around.
