Raise a Glass to International Chardonnay Day at These Bay Area Restaurants and Bars | Eater

"The Old Ship Saloon, originally carved from an Alcatraz shipwreck in the mid-1800s, has seen well over a hundred years of San Francisco history, from the Gold Rush to the great earthquake of 1906. While there are fewer prospectors among the patrons today, what the bar has lost in gold, it’s gained in much better alcohol. Get a glass of Harken Chardonnay here on Memorial Day Weekend alongside the locally caught rockfish and chips, and sail through the afternoon." - Vox Creative

5 Gold Rush Era Bars That Are Still in Operation, From Former Speakeasies to Boom Town Saloons

"The Old Ship Saloon is a bar built on the remains of the Arkansas ship that ran aground in 1849. Located at the northeast corner of Pacific and Battery wharves, the bar started operation in 1851. The current building stands over the ship's remains, and archaeological excavations have found old bottles and parts of the ship's hull."

One of the best Reuben sandwiches I've had! Delicious calamari, fantastic cocktails, and wonderful service (thanks, Pauli)! French fries were delicious & skirt steak was exceptional. Highly recommended!

Cool local place in a cool neighborhood. Stopped in to eat lunch there. The chilli dog was great!

Google
Great stop! Not the dive bar we were looking for, but a really nice restaurant. Good tap list and the loaded fries were delicious! Parking was easy. This is a fun Pub!

I was actually shocked with how good the food is. The fish tacos were the best I've ever had. The salmon filet added on to salads was really tasty, and the kale salad is really nourishing and complex on its own. Pretty good clam chowder, too.

The atmosphere here is cozy and welcoming. Friendly bartenders, and really good food! I've eaten nachos 100s of times in my life. The chicken molé nachos at The Old Ship Saloon are the best I've ever had! Also, my husband uses a wheelchair and this place is very accessible (including the bathroom!). We'll be back next time we're in SF.

This place was very popular, people even drinking and eating outside, even when the wind was so strong...great food And drinks bartender very knowledgeable in liquor 🤪 and area for recommendations to go to...had a nacho bowl which was amazing so good.

Let’s start with the staff—absolutely fantastic. Friendly, courteous, and incredibly prompt with their service. He really made us feel welcome. The atmosphere had a cozy, pub-like charm that reminded me of a place I visited in England. Relaxed, inviting, and just right for a laid-back evening. Now the food—delicious! The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the fries were perfectly crisp and mouthwatering. We also enjoyed a generous plate of nachos that hit the spot. Overall, this place is a great choice if you're looking to unwind with great food and genuinely warm service. I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed, enjoyable dining experience.

Google
Of all the places in SF, THIS is the place that actually redeems the entire city! I walked in, first time, these guys were EXTREMELY gracious, very friendly. They handed me a menu, let me take any seat in the place, and were VERY communicative with how they planned out the timing of the food, and when it was coming out. And even when it came out sooner than expected, that was not a problem. The atmosphere is pretty dark, but fitting! Hard to imagine this was an abandoned vessel named the Arkansas. Been to other places in the city, and they either upcharged claiming inflation was a reason, even though we're all facing it, or they pulled all sorts of tactics to get you to tip more. This place is honest with their prices, and genuine in their attitudes towards you. I had a rough couple days here, but being here for one meal made it all up! Thanks!

Yelp
My bf and I ate dinner here this past Sunday and had a positive experience. The setting was clean and casual, with exposed brick walls, minimal decor, lots of wood, and several TV's for watching sports. Service was prompt and professional, and the wait time for our food was reasonable. The menu at the restaurant seemed to offer more options than what I saw online, so it was hard to choose what to get, but had to go with something different. The bowl of mac & cheese with added hot dog was the perfect comfort dish on this lovely evening, cheesy and creamy, with generous amounts of delicious grilled pieces of hot dog mixed in. The wedge burger salad was tasty as well, the fresh lettuce with juicy flavorful meat, a tad too much dressing (should have ordered it on the side), but all of the ingredients came together well. The cocktails were good too (pimm's cup and manhattan), nothing too extraordinary, but our experience as a whole was great, and worthy of 5 stars.

Yelp
Vibes~ IMMACULATE Service~AMAZING Food~ATE DOWN From Vegas visiting and was looking for a nice place to sit and have an early dinner. Old Ship Saloon did not disappoint. Service was perfect! Best fish and chips we have ever enjoyed, it literally melted in your mouth!! I cannot put words to the amazing vibes here, feels like I'm straight out of a romance novel and I'm here for it!

Yelp
Service here was very rude and not welcoming. The whiskey sour cocktail tasted like a lemon drop and not sure I would come back here
google avatar

Florence K.

Yelp
Came on a weekday evening for some drinks and a quick bite. This is your standard tavern / bar place where there's not enough servers / wait staff for people who are here so service was a bit slow though the food came pretty quickly.
google avatar

Randy M.

Yelp
Not sure what's going on here. So much potential. The exterior and name presented an esthetic...but then the interior is cheap and poorly thought out. Dudes talking about their guns....where am I?

Yelp
If you are looking for a place to eat or grab a drink, this place will work! I was on the search for clam chowder but I was tired of going to the same places I go when I am in town. So I landed here. I ate at the bar which from a far looks fun but there is a huge lip on the bar that makes it impossible to get close to your food. To make matters a bit more complicated, I sat on the side of the bar with a slightly slanted floor. Between the two, it made for an adventure! Worrying I would tip (I wouldn't but it felt like it!) and trying to make it over the lip to my mouth with soup. I chose the bar top because it was one of the remaining spots that was open. This can easily be avoided by picking a table! I was a solo eater so picking a 4 top (or more) isn't my top choice, out of respect but I will next time. This is a funny place because I felt like I was on a ship and I had a grumpy captain (bartender). One of the bar keeps was a grumpy, curmudgeon-y man. I like to break the grumpy seal when I encounter these types of people but he held strong! I appreciate a grumpy person that stands their ground. It wasn't a problem for me, I just kept it simple and didn't engage, of which I think was their goal. I get it, I too have worked in the industry and survival skills are sometimes needed during shifts. The good news, there was another bartender that was kind so he evened the old grumpy bar captain energy. Clam chowder was thick and decent. I would get again. Looking around the room at the other food coming from the kitchen it looks like there are some excellent options. You will be satisfied with what you get. Just don't get soup/chowder at the bar (sandwiches would be fine!) unless you are excited about testing your eye-hand coordination with hot chowder. :)

Yelp
Great historic bar. Lots of fun - good people and stiff drinks. Very historic place too. Go just go.

Yelp
Walked in unsure kind of what to do, at an after work hour the bar was pretty loud, despite not too many people there, food was toward the back, walked in and had to do that thing where you're not sure if you wait to be seated or you take a seat or you find someone and you're just doing that weird little sand dance from Dune2 while deciding Anyway, finally got to order fish and chips , service was alright, the staff double up the bar and food serving so you'll have to grab their attention but they'll attend to you quick Fish was pretty good! Batter was good but inside was kinda of wet. Although it means the inside was far from dry, it would have been nicer if not wet, the chips felt like they were double fried(?) they tasted good all the same. I would have preferred something on the side, a small salad or some baked beans but otherwise it was a decent set of fish and chips for a decent price

Yelp
Old Ship Saloon is fun. Its a solid little horse shoe bar with good wings. I had the Patty Melt - it comes with swiss, I think next time I'll ask for an American cheese (but that's just me). The lighting is high, even in the evenings. So not a romantic place / no booths at all. But for a neighborhood bar that serves food relateviley late (for san francisco on a sunday), I liked it. If you're in the neighborhood and would like a drink, check it out. Wasn't too busy, and the bartender was friendly.

Barbara M.

Yelp
Almost every thing was wrong. Sorry. Go for the bar scene but skip the food. Server was pleasant enough but the food was cheap but dreadful.

Yelp
Good drinks and great service! Our bartender was great to talk with and managed a busy night impressively well! I had the Wedge Burger Salad and loved it! My husband had the chicken quesadilla, which was fine as well. Very chill atmosphere. Definitely would recommend to a friend.

Yelp
My bf and some friends (party of four) did a walking tour of the area on a Saturday afternoon and the history of this saloon was intriguing so we popped in here. You sit anywhere you like, the bar tender was our server too and he brought us our drinks and at the counter/table we casually put our order of food in. * California Reuben: Robert's Corned Beef, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut, Thousand Island Dressing, Rye Bread $17 - my bf thought the corned beef was too chewy but i liked it. * Beef Bolognese: Pappardelle Pasta, Shaved Parmesean Cheese $18 nobody at our table liked this. Felt like ingredients were kind of just tossed into a dish, it was temperature hot but don't recommend it * Fried Brussels Sprouts Pickled Mustard Seeds $8 * Fried Cornmeal Calamari: Tartar & Cocktail Sauce $15 * not pictured: Fish & Chips: Beer Battered Local Rock Fish, Seasoned Fries, Caper Tartar Sauce $19 and Fish Tacos: Blackened Cod, Jalapeno Slaw, Crema Mexicana & Avocado Not a place I'm dying to go back but the bf said he would give this place another chance. We surprisingly spent two hours here and didn't even notice time flying by! There are tvs around the place to watch different games.

Yelp
This is a straight up city corner bar that you stumble into before/after doing something else. The bartenders are pretty nice and the drinks are standard. It does sort of feel like you're in an old ship with the U-shaped wooden bar. This is a solid bar hopping spot if you're just roaming around the area living your best life.
google avatar

Sayana S.

Yelp
It's a great place for food and drinks. The bartenders are very friendly and attentive. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the prices are great for what they offer. This place fills up every single day.
google avatar

Yelp
this looks like a great bar, unfortunately their computer system had a glitch and they couldn't open up on this particular Sunday morning, which is not a good time to find a bar on the edge of the financial district. What the manager did do was open the door, even though they were obviously not open for business, just to let us know what was going on. As it turned out, he also made his "facilities" available to my friend who needed to use in the worst way. With that put to rest, he then directed us to a place that was open and it of course turned out to be also good. So for great customer service, which I'm sure gives a idea of the overall quality here, I'll put it on my list to come back.

Yelp
Great bar. Tons of history, as it was supposedly opened in the 1800s, but feel newly remodeled. Plenty of space and natural light, and the service was helpful and attentive. Will definitely be going back
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Quaint little pub/ale house, which is apparently quite old & historic as well (est. 1851). Decent food and friendly staff. Such a shame that this is one of the only places in this largely residential and barren "neighborhood."

Yelp
Found myself at this bar a few times during a work happy hour to then venturing off and stopping by before a dinner reservation nearby. There's plenty of seating inside and the staff are super friendly. I love the vibes here. They have a nice selection of beer, cocktails and wine as well as some tasty bites. My go to cocktail is the tequila daisy which is refreshing and citrusy. If you're into mezcal I also recommend the tiger lily. This spot has very much became a fave in the area.

Yelp
I love going here , low key. Good food always got room. Customer service go crazy. Shout out Paul my guy. !!!!!

Yelp
A historic saloon located of the Embarcadero. Clean, good cocktails and beer selections with great bartenders. I recommend stopping by for a pop or two.

Yelp
Arrived in San Fran for the weekend and had some time spare time before our plans so we walked around downtown and saw this little saloon and figured we grab a bite and have a drink. This place is nice inside. I loved the style. The brick walls and pictures were a great touch. We were able to seat ourselves and the bartender was quick to help us with menus. We got topo Chicos and we shared the rueben with fries. The fries were crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the inside just how I like them! The rueben was amazing. It was the perfect portion for us to share with the appetites we had. My fiancé said the ranch was great. They have many seats around the bar and some outdoor seating. They have water to help yourself. Decent pricing! Definitely recommend if you are in the area!

Yelp
The food was very good. They are open very late. Their kitchen is also open very late. A good place to go to, if the other restaurants in the neighborhood are closed. I enjoyed their Ribs plate and Pimm's cup. They also have the standard pub menu. The waiter was friendly and served my food quickly. I had a nice time. The site of the building the Old Ship Saloon is in had an amazing history. I will definitely come back again.

Yelp
Great drinks and fast service in a stellar location. The ambiance was good but it becomes loud when it gets busy, so not perfect for an intimate conversation. Recommended.

Yelp
Great little bar! Low key and great drinks! The building is super historic and has a great story behind it.

Yelp
Lots of history, great bartender, we split a Reuben with sweet potato fries. Delicious. Will definitely go again.

Yelp
Great celery. Fire Water. What do you think of when you imagine a hamburger? Here at the Old Ship Saloon, they have an item boldly named "The Burger"; and if ever there was a burger deserving of the name "THE Burger", it is this one. First, we must talk about the meat: cooked to perfection; the platonic ideal of medium rare. The bun was really interesting: it was crunchy, but not hard, almost indescribable. Sweet, caramelized onions danced along the palate, paring delightfully with the savory flavor of the meat. Juicy, expertly selected tomatoes, thinly sliced, adorned the burger, along with a tasteful amount of lettuce. The pickles were aight. Oh and the fries... oh, the fries...

Kevin O.

Yelp
Great little friendly dive with good selection of drinks and a rather pleasant dinner menu

Yelp
Great bar fidi adjacent. Great for after work non frilly drinks. My new go-to place for a chill happy hour vibe with fair prices and tasty food.

Yelp
Great after work hangout, close to downtown. Very casual local bar with bar bites available.

Yelp
Super nice bartender and easy menu. My friend enjoyed the burger and I had the crispy chicken sandwich. No complaints and worthy of a stop when you need a quick bite.

Yelp
Food was great !!!! Came here for the Olympics and the vibe was so amazing. Best part was the SWEET bartender- super attentive and we had such a great time. Definitely recommend ! 10/10

Yelp
Post Christmas Brunch Fish and Chips Bloody Mary Great bartender that day, very personable, efficient, and friendly . Wonderful food and atmosphere. Historic setting.

Yelp
Nice, clean, no-fuss bar and TVs with games on. Went tonight, a Tuesday late afternoon, early evening, busy but not crowded. Decent and not overpriced food and drinks. Service was friendly, welcoming and efficient. The food was tasty, fresh and presented well. The food wasn't necessarily anything to rave about but it wasn't sad either. We enjoyed our meals and was satisfied. We shared a tuna melt w/sweet potato fries and an Asian salad. Each had a Philosopher's Manhattan. Total with tip was about $65. We wanted to stop somewhere after work for a drink and dinner that didn't blow our budget or compromise on quality.

Yelp
I ordered the Okd Fashioned and Negrobi, and Fish & Chips - excellent bar service, casual, friendly old SF atmosphere, lots of locals and regulars. Drinks were solid - I asked about Campari, and Eric gave me a shot glass to taste it. Double-battered French fries, hot and fresh - breading was a little thick, and fish a little thin - but very good otherwise.
google avatar

Jereb S.

Yelp
Friendly good service. Reasonably priced. Unfortunately no ship anymore, but I would return if I find myself in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Julia S.

Yelp
Found this lunch spot near by the immigration office.. I ordered "the burger" and fish chips. First, burger was perfectly juicy and it came with French fries that are very well seasoned with perfect textures. Fish and chips are fresh and tender. Had a small hick up on the POS and took longer to get the food out. Little wait is not a big deal after waiting for hours at immigration office The owner keep us informed on the situation and finally got the food to us. Awesome food and excellent customer service. Definitely would recommend anyone to pay a visit. I noticed few tables ordering their ribs plate. Would give it a try on my next visit.

Yelp
I've been trying to grab takeout about 3 times a week during the pandemic and finally made it to this place. It's a little odd to eat pub food without the pub, but now is definitely the right time for comfort food at home. I may be a bit spoiled by the fancy gastropub trend, so their food felt a bit old school in comparison. But it did check the comforting box. Mac & Cheese: Big portion! The macaroni was a nice al dente and there was lots of creamy cheese. I liked the generous amount of bacon, but it was kinda floppy instead of crispy. The tomato bits were a weird addition, probably could have done without. Missed that there wasn't any gratinéed cheese on top, but that's hard to do with takeout. Buffalo Wings: The wings were meaty. The buffalo sauce was slightly tangy. However, the skin wasn't that crispy at all. Maybe I'm getting spoiled with the double fried Korean wings, but I was hoping at least part of the wing would crunch. Liked how they gave two dipping sauces, ranch and bleu cheese, so no need to choose. The carrots were a deep orange and very fresh. The celery was a not-so-appealing light green. Crispy Chicken Sandwich w/ Seasoned Fries: Ok, the fries were very nice. They had a light spicy batter that was fried onto the fry. So you get flavor, without spices running on your hands. The fried chicken sandwich was just alright. Thin chicken and not very crunchy battering. Also, wasn't a fan of the massive amount of creamy coleslaw inside the sandwich. I'm not a big creamy coleslaw fan to begin with and it just makes the sandwich itself feel more soggy. The bread was chewy and tasty though.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Came back to give them another try. Besides the ferry building, this place seems to be the only reliable place to get solid food and drinks. This time we had the chicken mole nachos. I've never been served nachos in a bowl. I enjoyed the flavor of the dish, but I didn't like how soggy the chips quickly became.

Dennis F.

Yelp
Only been once. Not a neighborhood I frequent. A friend said they made the elusive Pisco Punch made famous during the Barbary Coast period. (Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling both raved about it.) So off we went. The Pisco deserves its accolades. I had fish and chips in keeping with the nautical theme - really really good. I think only Slainte in Oakland may have better. Its a small pub with a rich history. You can feel that. Its clean and well run with good service. I'm told by serious mixology friends that the bartender knows his stuff. We had a clear view of the bar and it was impressive to see the variety being prepared and the complements flying when the libations were tasted. I will certainly head back when in the area.

Trap L.

Yelp
the fries are legit the best fries ive ever had and im in love with the bartender xoxo

Nyla K.

Yelp
Stopped by after the fleet week air show to wait for the crowds to die down. One superstar bartender served all of us that afternoon (20-25 people) and took our drink and food orders. Very clearly stated that all orders must be taken at the bar. We ordered a few rounds of beer and got some fries. TBH.. the fries were a bit cold but that's ok because I was super impressed with the bartender. There's also great outdoor seating if you don't want to sit inside. Also a cool locals spot a little hidden from the main drag.

Mike W.

Yelp
The cheeseburgers are juicy and nice ratio of meat to fat! Fries are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Beers are cold and service is responsive and easy
google avatar

Ginger W.

Yelp
We popped in for lunch and it was so good! Definitely would come back! The spicy chicken sandwich with the coleslaw on it was excellent! The French fries were crunchy and had such good batter on them...probably the best fries I've ever had. The side salad was also excellent- very fresh. Definitely a hidden gem!

Bryan B.

Yelp
Great place. I popped in on a Friday evening around 6:30. The music was just the right volume, not too loud like in most other places. I had delicious fish tacos and a well-made Manhattan. When those were eaten, I ordered another Manhattan and some mac & cheese, as I didn't want to leave yet. I left very full and happy. I highly recommend this place.

Sam S.

Yelp
Open on a Sunday afternoon. Affordable drinks for the area. Good service, good portions. House made tortilla chips and guacamole are solid. Clean upscale but intimate.
google avatar

Zita M.

Yelp
Kitchen open till 1am The food was great! I couldn't believe how good the sweet potato fries were. The burger didn't disappoint either: the meat was done just right and the added bacon / avocado really gave it that special kick. My friends had the calamari - also very nice. Overall: a neat historic neighborhood bar that serves fantastic drinks and good food. Crowd: a good mix of male/ female ratio, mature, mostly after work people. Will come back.
google avatar

Craig V.

Yelp
When my company moved nearby, we thought there weren't any good restaurants nearby until we found Old Ship. This place has been great for after-work events or just lunchtime meals. The beer is quite good with a wide selection, and the food is even better. I'm happy to come here whenever I need a healthy meal as I've been tracking my food and macros. The burgers and salads here are top-notch with my last order being the blue cheese wedge burger salad. Note: the blue cheese dressing is not overwhelming and actually very pleasant! Keep up the great work :)

Corey B.

Yelp
I recommend this bar to anyone in the area. They make an amazing manhattan and last word. Props to Damian the bartender
