The Best Places To Eat Oysters In LA

"Set amid the crowds and the urban commotion of Grand Central Market, The Oyster Gourmet is an unusual-looking, vaguely steampunk-y small wooden stand designed to look like a giant open oyster shell. And as you might expect, they’ve really only got three things on the menu besides wine, and the one most worth your time is the plate of oysters. The selection constantly changes, and the shuckers are super knowledgeable–so even if you don’t know the difference between a Blue Point and a Wellfleet, they’re always happy to help you figure out what you’ll like. "French-born chef Christophe Happillon has become known as L.A.'s oyster sommelier through his oyster pop-ups at high-end restaurants and hotels. In 2014, he brought The Oyster Gourmet to Grand Central Market in the form of a tiny stall with wood-canvas wings that open and close not entirely unlike...yes, an oyster. Like the space, the menu is small but satisfying—oysters, of course, and also a selection of clams, shrimp, and some raw fish, along with wine and beer. In addition to his space at Grand Central Market, Happillon still does seafood catering, and brings oyster pop up bars to events and parties in Los Angeles."

Google
Amazing place! Fresh oysters which have an amazing and full taste, excellent spicy tuna bowl and an amazing crew! I can definitely recommend to order the sparkling wine to combine with the oysters.

Eric Stone

Google
Don’t know about the food but unfriendly service. First they tried to place an order for double the amount of oysters requested. Then they would not let any outside food even after we placed an order with them. For a place that exists within a communal space, they weren’t communal at all. The Water Grill absolutely has a better selection for the same price if you really care about seafood and service. Walk a few blocks and try a huge selection of oysters if that’s what you are wanting,

Google
The shrimp cocktail is one of the best things I have ever had, anywhere. It’s my special occasion treat!

Google
Ordered 6pc fresh oysters to go. I expected the oysters to be freshly shucked when ordered like any normal oyster bars do. As I was walking away to pick up other food from the food court, the chef took out pre-shucked oysters from the refrigerator. I told him I saw that and I don't want pre-opened oysters. He began going on with random excuses: oh these are extras, I shucked these just a few minutes ago, blah blah blah. Shady. After being firm that I don't want those mystery oysters, he began to shuck new oysters. They were mediocre at best. What oyster bar gives pre-opened oysters? This one.

Google
Small selection of beer. They only serve Pacifico, which helped quench our beer thirst. The staff was great.

Google
Decent pacific oysters in a nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Oysters were overall of good taste, while size was a mixed bag. We would recommend real glasses over plastic for the drinks. We received a great restaurant recommendation from the staff.

Google
Nice place with friendly service and very affordable, what the server recommended was amazing and just what we needed. The only think we didn’t like for the price was the paper plates and plastic utensils. Other than that everything else was nice.

Google
Tiny hut, big taste. Intimate little oyster bar on the outer edge of grand central market serving seafood, wine, and beer. Started off with delicious shrimp before comparing three different types of oysters from three different regions. Excellent spot for a date. Highly recommended.

Yelp
My daughter and i came here for the first time since she was craving oysters. Wow, service was great, the staff were friendly, and the oysters, the best we've ever had in our lives!! Their name says it all!! It really is Gourmet!! We got the 6 oysters for $24 and we also ordered the shrimp cocktail for $14.99. We decided to come back another time and do 12/$48!! And come back to try other, as well. Oysters of the day were: Glacier Point, Halibut Cove and Alaska. I asked for the smaller ones, all delicious!! Thanks Oyster Gourmet team for the exceptional service and having very fresh delicious oysters!! We highly recommend this place!!

Yelp
Super solid place for oysters to satisfy your craving! I love that it's in Grand Central Market so you can try other foods as well. The workers here are so friendly and they have a variety of different sauces for your oysters.
google avatar

Yelp
Great event with oysters from all over the west coast. I love a smaller oyster and there were several from BC, Alaska and some real mouthfulls too. Love oysters briney with some lemon or hot sauce. The market is always fun, guys at the oyster place that put this on are great, tasty micheladas and mimosas.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
The oysters here are soooo fresh! I believe these were Fanny Bay oysters from Canada. The oysters were sweet and meaty,, and the perfect size!! I loved them so much I literally came back to buy another half dozen after I finished my first plate LOL
google avatar

Yelp
My friend was craving some oysters and let me tell you guys this place was so dam good !!!! I will definitely be back there again. Try like four types of oyster had the clam chowder and it was to die for !!!! I even try there in house beer which was so yummy. This place is located in downtown Los Angeles so come on in and try it all !

Yelp
STEPH JUDGEMENT: Great place for some oysters and drinks. I've been several times now to this charming wooden hut inside Grand Central Market, and they're consistently great. They must have changed hands since my last review, as they by longer seen to have the same scallop ceviches I've come to love. However, the oysters are always fresh and the service friendly. Came here on one of the warmest days ever and it was awesome to cool down with some fresh cold oysters and white wine. Prices are average and seating is limited.

Yelp
Fresh Oyster Stand within Grand Central Market. Nice to have a proper appetizer with glass of wine before checking out the many other vendors.

Yelp
Great place to chill and drink a beer while enjoying the best most delicious and fresh out ocean oysters around the LA area. Five stars all around!!! The service is amazing!! The servers are very polite and cool also great music to vibe too!!!!

Yelp
I have tried there oysters here a couple of times and sometimes it's good, not sure how long they keep those oysters opened like that. They don't shuck it when you order it so it's not considered fresh. Whoever was working today was very rude, I was just standing next to the table and they told me it was reserved,,, I wasn't even sitting down or anything and pretty much not a single person was even close to sitting around there. Lol, only needed to tell me once also, they were like harassing me to move away just for standing close by.
google avatar

Brittany J.

Yelp
Good spot but a bit overpriced. $20 for a half dozen oysters is def on the expensive side, even for nice restaurants, but they were really good, fresh and nicely shucked. Although I wish they noted where they were from(?) I'm sure I could've asked but I think it should be labeled information as the oyster options rotate. They don't let food or drink from outside vendors at their tiki hut which I find a bit weird at a food court style food hall? As long as you're enjoying something from them as well I don't know why they wouldn't let other food at their counter. Overall, a nice option to have oysters at grand central market so I can't complain.
google avatar

Simone F.

Yelp
My sister and I are new to LA. Decided to check out this oyster bar. Unfortunately we were verbally and physically assaulted by the server. Instead of calmly asking us to move from the seating area because we had food from another vendor (which we would have understandably done) he not only accosted us, he put his hands in our drinks and took them away; spilling them all over us. Worst experience I have ever had!
google avatar

Celine C.

Yelp
I was at Grand Central Market for dinner and the Oyster Gourmet was my first stop. I ordered the dozen oysters for $39 and a glass of sparkling wine for $13 first before sitting at the counter. The oysters were freshly shucked; 6 Canadian oysters and 6 Mexican oysters, which were different and flavorful in their own way accompanied by shrimp cocktail sauce and mignonette. Few bottles of hot sauces were also provided. Sparkling wine was nicely chilled. I was able to walk around the market with my wine (just can't leave the premise). No complaints and had a good time!
google avatar

Yelp
The family and I stopped by Grand Central Market for a snack on our way to The Last Bookstore and what better snack to have then oysters. The Oyster Gourmet concept is very basic. Oysters, wine, and beer. What more do you need, right? There might be other items offered on the menu, but I wasn't paying attention. For $19.50, the Mrs. and I enjoyed a half-dozen very mild and wonderful oysters. Not a bad deal. We've had good oysters and bad oysters. The ones offered up at Oyster Gourmet fall into the good category which is surprising considering you're ordering them from an oyster shack in downtown L.A.

Yelp
I bought a drink by accident at this place. I happened to be eating my eggslut sandwich when a spilled all the inside of it on my white shirt. I asked the bartender for napkins and he provided me a wet towel which help me a lot. I felt I needed to return the favor and bought a drink. This guy saved my day. Such an awesome service even tho I was not a customer.

Yelp
This lovely and personal spot in the Grand Central Market in DTLA is fantastic both in price and quality. Each oyster was perfect, the wine was an excellent choice for the menu, service was attentive and friendly. I'm bringing my friends there tomorrow!
google avatar

Yelp
This review isn't about the food. FYI...I did leave a 20% tip even though there was no service rendered. It's this simple... I ask to sit because it is super busy... and I'm told you can't sit unless you buy food even though there are people sitting that haven't either. It sits different with me at this point... what makes me different than the people sitting around drinking as well???? That have not bought food. Come on man! We have to be better than that.

Santiago R.

Yelp
I was there at 11:00 am on 9/28. I must have been the first customer because the stools were still upside down. I asked if they were open and a tall young man said yes but that he first had to wipe down the tables. I patiently waited.. he finally took my order, paid him with cash and he gave me the wrong change when I explained he shorted me he got upset and when he gave me the change the second time he threw it at me... I spoke to the other person that was there and he completely ignored me. When I asked for a manager the person that attended me originally said he's in France then he came outside the counter and tried to intimidate me by hovering around me. The oysters were fresh but the service was terrible.... Rude.
google avatar

Nate T.

Yelp
You wouldn't think to find an oyster bar inside a food stall center but this place is always my starting point. Gives me time to decide where I want to eat next or if I should order another dozen. Be sure to get a variety if available but always let the shucker choose for you.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
Always have loved the oysters from here. They're fresh and the sauces they give to mix with the oyster are great. This last time I came I also ordered a poke bowl and it was fresh and tasty. Very simple but that's all I needed to enjoy the fresh salmon. When I go to grand central market I always try to get oysters from here. I knocked one star off because when my boyfriend went to go ask for a napkin one the employees denied it to him. Idk why they were so stubborn with the napkins. They didn't even give us any to start off with. But the employee who took our order was great and friendly so we were finally able to get some napkins from him.

Yelp
Was craving oysters but wasn't sure if I was in the mood to be spending 20$ on 1/2 dozen oysters. As I was eyeing this stall, a guy with their oysters must've sensed I needed the push because he assured us "these oysters are fire" and we went ahead and got some. It was close to 5PM and the man at the stall stated all they had left was oysters and shrimp. The oysters were so, SO worth it! The perfect balance of refreshing and salty. Staff was so friendly and informative too. Definitely worth a try!
google avatar

Jazzy S.

Yelp
Yummy oysters, so fresh, so delicious. The sauces provided are a great addition. We wanted to poke bowl as well but the were not available unfortunately. Service was good, pretty quick. The price is a bit high though. We got a dozen for $40.
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
Worth it? Yes Repeat? Yes Dozen Oysters for $39 It's a small, no frills location serving up some good oysters. Super friendly staff and fast shuckers. Got two dozen of Vancouver oysters and they were delicious! Atomic Horseradish and their vignette is on point!

Yelp
I flew to Los Angeles to visit my girlfriend. The Oyster Gourmet was our first meal together, which set things off on the right note. The champagne and oysters were a perfect marriage. Me and her were very in love, but now we are not. All I have is her sweet memory. I reminisce over her and the way the oysters and champagne tasted, and danced on my tongue like a beautiful woman.

Yelp
Pricy, but quality of oysters and service make up for it. Come by and have some oysters along with some cold drinks and other snacks at GCM. Pull up to their bar or sit at a near by table outside. They will. Ring your oysters to you. Really enjoyed my time and oysters. They even gave me a couple extra because they heard it was my birthday. Will be back.
google avatar

Yolanda S.

Yelp
We just came visit The Oyster Gourmet not so long ago with friends when we're grabbing lunch in GCM, and we opted for a couple of wines, and oysters as always. First timer would be wise to opt for chef's choice $18 for 6 oysters, which included 2 of each featured oysters; they are Baja California(I think they're Kumamotos? Fruity flavors and less brininess) British Columbia (creamy and buttery), and Washington (mild). Or, you can have them pick the best 3 or 6 for you (also $3/each) the shuckers are happy to help you figure it out what you'll like. They are always informative and super knowledgeable! (Note: if you ask for briny oysters, the shuckers would give you the really briny ones! Obvi, I can't handle that) Ooh, and don't forget to try their scallop ceviche, it is absolutely divine! The presentation is gorgeous too! The Oyster Gourmet is a must when you're in GCM! Secret tip: The earlier you come, the better! We came in late once, and found a few oysters weren't as super fresh as they supposed to be. So, come earlier! Oysters are magic!

Yelp
If there were ever a rating without a star-- This little "science project" had me laid up for three days. HELP! The oysters (if you can call them that) were metallic in taste and dwarfed in size...as if they were pumped out of a nuclear plant. And, service. Well...HELP!!!
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Best oysters I've ever had!! Service was great, wine was good. Overall, great experience
google avatar

Magda N.

Yelp
Their oysters taste fishy. We got the 3/$10 to taste first and glad we didn't get more. They are small and taste fishy. Or maybe we just went on a bad day. Service is nice though. Maybe they read the other bad service review and decided they need to up their game LOL. We never had bad experience here.
google avatar

Alexandria E.

Yelp
Stopped by here to try the 3/$10 oysters and we were immediately blown away by the friendly service and FRESH oysters. They were cold, delicious and fresh! My husband and I were very happy to have found this place and we will be coming back!
google avatar

Kirsten D.

Yelp
Talk about amazing. We're visiting from SW Florida where seafood is a staple in our home. Can't get enough of these great oysters from the Baja coast! awesome Vibe and even better chef! Thank you!

Yelp
Read about this place and love oysters! Jumped in the car with hubby and headed straight to Oyster Gourmet in the Grand Central Market in DTLA. Must admit - checked Yelp ('cause I love you guys) and was a little concerned with recent posts re: service. However, there was no need for alarm .... 2 gentlemen servers at late lunch today were absolutely the friendliest and best shuckers around! Tried the chef's special with oysters from Baja, Virginia and Alaska. SO GOOD. Paired with a glass of Sancerre and Bordeaux. The guys knew their wine, too. After that, we tried the ahi poke. Clean, fresh, with sesame oil and black sesame. Back to more oysters and scallop ceviche to finish. All refreshing, well prepared and perfect for a warm afternoon watching the world go by (actually mostly tourists go by!) Grand Central represents LA, a rich and culturally diverse city with AMAZING food. Loved the people watching, the food stalls and markets. A must for tourists and locals alike. And many more yummy bites to try on future visits.
google avatar

Eric V.

Yelp
Yummo! The oysters were fantastic! I had trepidation ordering them, but went for it. The only snafu was the service. I asked the guy working what kind of oysters he had looking for some info on what I was ordering. He just pointed to a paper plate and said those are what we are serving. Not a big fan of someone not giving you the "411" on what you are ordering. He seemed busy. And when I looked around me. I was the only one in line. Service counts during Covid! I hope this guy figures it out or the owner of this establishment advises him. That money is hard to come by in these times. Bring your customer service A game. I had 6 oysters and enjoyed them very much. The price was right. They were briny and a little salty. I love oysters and this place made me a believer.
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
This little stand in Grand Central Market is very straight forward, they serve oysters and wine. They do have a couple beer options as well as a shrimp cocktail and a tuna tartar, when they are in stock. They guys behind the counter are really nice and fun to talk to. You literally sit there and watch this guy shuck numerous oysters and he does it with such ease, you feel like he has shucked millions of them. They also had different types of oysters that they were very kind to walk you through which were which. Their house white was also really good and made specifically for them. The only negatives I have to say about this experience is that they were out of the tuna tartar and the shrimp cocktail. I would have liked to try those as well. I guess I will just try those the next time I am there.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Great little oyster hut in Grand Central Market. The oysters are always fresh and they always have a good variety. Usually will order some regardless of whatever else I'm eating at the market.
google avatar

Melineh H.

Yelp
Tim is awesome. What can I say? He rocked Customer service was A+. I'm surprised considering how busy they are! Amazing oysters Great scallops Cold fresh shrimp Nice red wine We found awesome seating Will be back
google avatar

Yelp
I'm honestly not that shocked that a random Yelp search for a good oyster place threw up a spot in Grand Central Market. GCM has been AMAZING for its concentration of awesome food spots (Eggslut and the plethora of taco places come to mind), so it only made sense that an oyster spot would be there too right? Had to give it a shot. The oysters here are super fresh and very delicious! They have a deal where you can get 12 oysters for $34, which is a pretty fair price (been to enough oyster spots and I've determined $3 per oyster is the average price). Also had the tuna poke and scallop ceviche. Both were really fresh and totally worth getting. Service is friendly. They can be a bit slow at times, but keep in mind there's literally only two people working so you can understand why it's slow. They really do give their best efforts, so I appreciate it. Seating here is either at the bar or tables around the area if you can manage to find an open table. Definitely glad I finally took the opportunity to stop by here, will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Mayra S.

Yelp
Ahí Tuna was fresh and full of flavor , served with a side of chips and of course I asked for some lemons and hot sauce and enjoyed every bite ! I wanted seconds and can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
Came here the other day with family. I was showing them around GCM and we decided to stop here for some bites after eating at Egg Slut and Horse Thief BBQ. Their oysters are on the expensive side, about $3 each. But they are really fresh and you can really taste the differences between the oysters. We also shared their scallop ceviche which was just average. Solid place, but pricey.
google avatar

Robin P.

Yelp
I really liked this place , it's a more relaxing spot in Grand Central Market. The food is made quickly and the presentation is gorgeous. The staff is courteous and amazingly friendly. They know their products well and offer great recommendations. We tried the shrimp cocktail and wow, it wasn't what I was expecting at all . To my surprise though I really enjoyed it .
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
It's a cute wine bar / seafood vendor located in Grand Central Market. Price is a bit steep but food is good. Oysters are fresh. Service is great.
google avatar

Denis S.

Yelp
Always good to have an oyster place walking distance from work. Before you go, be ready to spend some money. This place isn't cheap. Although, I'm not sure if I would trust a raw oyster place this far from the ocean if it was cheap, so maybe that makes sense. We got the half dozen oysters, the poke, and some wine. Their wine selection is fine, but nothing amazing. The oysters were solid. The poke wasn't too shabby either.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
This review is a rather unfortunate one that I wish I didn't have to write..... That being said, I feel as if this business needs to know what happened, and the business they lost because of it. I had two friends visiting from out of town, and we wanted to go get oysters. I usually go to a different restaurant, but since this one was in Grand Central Market, with so many other places to try amazing food, I felt like it would be a perfect place to spend our Sunday afternoon. (4-11-21) We walked around for a bit noticing how sparse the tables were due to covid. They were spaced apart and they were all taken. We decided to grab a beer and my friends ordered a sausage, cut up with toothpicks, that was in a small cardboard bowl. We walked back towards this restaurant to try finding a table. To my surprise, one of the tables right by the restaurant was getting cleared. I hurried over to grab it. The guy cleaning the table told me that the table was only for the oyster place. So I told him that was fine Bc we were planning on ordering a bunch of oysters from them. My friends were behind me and made their way over to the table. The guy looked at my friend and said "there's no outside food allowed at our table". We looked at him and told him we were going to order a bunch of oysters from him. He said it was their policy and my friend couldn't set the little cardboard bowl of cut up sausage on their table. My friend said... "so what you're saying is... I can stand here next to the table and eat this but I can't sit here and order food from you at the same time?" I will admit we were getting really upset. There are no tables available anywhere. You can't stand up and eat or the security guards tell you to walk out to the sidewalk, and then you're dealing with a situation like this. It was petty to tell a customer they can't sit at your table like that. He also mentioned they make more money when there's no food from other vendors. By the end of it, the guy told us he's refusing to serve us at all. I even tried apologizing and saying we aren't trying to be rude, it's just very difficult during these times and we're just trying to have a nice afternoon and we had our hearts set on their oysters. He replied with "like I said, I'm not serving you." We were absolutely shocked. I have been here so many times and had nothing but great things to say about it. It makes me sad that they refused to serve us over 4 pieces of cut up sausage that was gone in 5 minutes. We decided to go to the other restaurant we had originally decided against in the first place. We always love the restaurant "Rappahannok ". I'm including our bill for Rappahannok so they can understand the amount of money we wanted to spend. And they sent us away Bc we challenged the guy in his no outside food rule. Please see my review for Rappahannok. They treated us so well! They will continue to get our service and send others there with high recommendations. You guys need to learn to take care of your customers. We drove a long way just to get to YOU! We chose you guys and there was no respect for your repeat customers. Don't worry. We won't be back. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. I see a lot of other people dealing with the attitude and rudeness of your staff.

Yelp
I ate here around 430pm yesterday a Thursday . These were the most disgusting oysters I have ever had. I seriously could not even eat them we paid 40$ and left the whole plate. I don't know if they were sitting out but it tasted old as if they came out of the LA river. I have ate here before and they were fine so yesterday I was in shock. Plus the wine quality has gone down. I had a Chardonnay it tasted like they put water in the bottle. It was a bad experience and the bar tender didn't seem to care at all.
google avatar

Kislev A.

Yelp
I finally caught this place open! I kid you not, every time I swung by in the past few years, it is closed, but I caught you this time! The kiosk is beautifully designed and opened like a beautiful onion with bar seating available. And yes, alcohol is served. $34 for a dozen fresh oysters. I deferred to the "chef" and got 3 different kinds of oysters from various regions and the tray came with 3 different sauces. All of which were good accompaniments. I'm not sick yet and it's been a week. Even if I did get sick, I'd have to say it was worth it. :)

Yelp
Decent little wine bar/seafood vendor located inside of Grand Central Market. Eating here kind of came by accident, but it ended up being a decent experience. With no seats or tables open elsewhere, we decided to go sit at the bar and order a couple items from their menu so we could sit and relax for a few. I ended up ordering the tuna poke, priced at $10.99. The dish took a while to get, but you could tell that it's homemade here. It came out on a shell, which was pretty cool. The quantity was OK. Not bad, but not great either. It made for a decent snack. The tuna tasted fresh, and the marinade was pretty good. I enjoyed the flavor. Will I be back? I'm not opposed. Service was friendly and the food was good. The price was alright for the quality. This makes for an OK stop when you need a quick fix of poke or oysters. This place is definitely best suited for those into wine. Go ahead and check this place out.

Yelp
What are the odds of finding something that reminds you of the beach without actually having to be there? The Oyster Gourmet!!! Jeff and Kel were not only super friendly but the service they provide is excellent!! From Poke tuna bowls to oysters this place is Definitely a must when you're in LA central market!!! One of my all time favorite to visit and take family/friends when visiting me..

Yelp
So fresh! And delicious. Every bite is awesome! Tried several varieties of oysters, loved them all. The Sunset Beach ones come from Washington. They're smaller and all butter. Paradise Cove in British Colombia have the most balanced, and the Gray Pearl from Baja are a on the briny side. The Scallop Ceviche is great if you're not into oysters. Love the pretty scallop shell for presentation, and the little bay scallops are the tenderest and freshest I've had in a while. Highly recommend. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
We were craving oysters for quite sometime, finally we went to the Oyster Gourmet at the Grand Central Market yesterday evening. Jeffrey shucked a dozen for us. We, as oysters lovers, were quite impressed with the quality and the freshness. Jeffrey was really knowledgeable and even when busy took the time to talk to us. We will be back for more!!!!!
