On the Grid : The Palmerston

"This cosy wood panelled pub, complete with lit fireplace, is a firm favourite with the East Dulwich locals. Known for being a solid gastro pub that serves a good selection of ales and a seasonal menu that serves delicious British fare. Perfect for a Sunday roast." - 2A Studio

London’s Best Fireplace Restaurants for Christmas 2018 | Eater London

"East Dulwich’s best boozer has not one but two fireplaces, both of which blaze invitingly when there’s a nip in the air. The Victorian building feels homely and well-loved, with chintzy wallpaper and a hotchpotch of wooden chairs, and the food is reliably excellent, whether it’s brunch — ‘nduja toast with poached eggs, cinnamon-bacon waffles — or a special-occasion supper — hake with orzo and mussel cream, girolles with kohlrabi, cavolo nero and black truffle. There’s a strong wine list, too." - Emma Hughes

Where to Eat in East Dulwich, London | Eater London

"Most of East Dulwich’s pubs (and they are legion) tout themselves with the much-maligned prefix these days but The Palmerston remains SE22’s original and probably most consistent gastropub. While the likes of EDT and The Actress are good choices for a boozy evening out with a bit of food thrown in, here it is the other way round. Its cosy backroom dining area is formal, but not stuffily so, and the kitchen applies a delicate touch to carefully-sourced ingredients in dishes like Cornish sea trout tartare with capers and dill." - Isaac Parham

I went to The Palmerston and ordered the fish and chips. Honestly, the fish didn’t have much flavor it kind of just tasted like whatever you paired it with, whether it was tartar sauce or a bit of lemon. The food isn’t bad, but it didn’t really impress me either. The service was great, though, and the place has a cozy vibe. I’m giving it 3 stars because food matters, and while it wasn’t bad, it didn’t wow me. The best part of the night was definitely the prawns those were on point.

Had a beautiful meal! The grilled mackerel was amazing! Soft and melted in the mouth. If I was being super critical would love a crispier skin and I think some potatoes or fries should be included. The customer service was beyond perfect Olga was friendly and attentive, which made us feel super comfortable and welcoming, which is a huge deal for us! Thank you for a lovely evening

Google
It used to be a great pub under Jamie and Renie. Then the landlord kicked them out. Now it’s a strong ‘OK’. Beers looked after well, casks are down to 1 - usually Timothy Tailors so good. Servers are friendly. But it is lacking that sparkle the pub used to have under the previous management. Used to have a kick ass wine offer. Food was top notch and wide beer selection alongside super service. Still, it’s OK.

The absolute best thing that stands out about this gastropub is the excellent friendly efficient service by the staff. Without a doubt Olga, Sam and Theo provide a warm welcome, super efficient friendly knowledgeable service that reminds one of the good old days of the humble pub. Food or drink or both, just go to see the staff.

We can’t recommend the Palmerston enough. We have lived in the area for 14 years and the Palmerston has changed staff and managers a few times but the current set-up is the best we’ve seen. The food is amazing and the staff are really welcoming and lovely - especially Olga who is the heart of the pub always makes us and everyone else feel really welcome. That’s what makes a good pub a really great local.

Last month we ate at The Palmerston. It was good. Friday night busy vibe and most people downstairs seemed to just come for a drink. I had the fish n chips. They were decent chips, always an important test of any London pub. A chef called in sick so there was only one person in the kitchen. The staff tried their best. A lovely atmosphere and I love that Oddono's is close by for gelato afterwards. 😝

First time here yesterday was served by the lovely James he recommended the ox cheek with mash which was lovely. He was great company and so patient with me trying to decide. The man deserves a raise at how polite he was. The place was clean and organised not too expensive either so all in all had a great experience.

Google
Average pub. We had fish and about 10 chunky chips . Fish was nice but left lots of batter be abuse there was a lot of batter. Online menu not the same as in pub, some dishes missing that we actually went for, but all in all not a bad place .

Yelp
Had a lovely lunch with a friend. The food menus was excellent for what I was expecting from a pub like venue. Our food was excellent and so was the service. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Great place for a great diner! We went there for an early xmas diner with the whole family. The type of food is European/British. We decided to go for a starter and main course and skipped the desert because we were so full. The wine list is great with foreigner wines coming from Australia and was good, we chose the Shiraz. The food is very good and I went for squids as starter and the lamb as main and this was really good food. The staff was super nice and it was a great evening. We will go back again!!!

Yelp
The Palmerston has been doing good things down in East Dulwich for about 5 years now and has steadfastedly remained a favourite. I go here on my own, I go here with friends, I go here with family, I go here for food, I go here for drinks. When it launched the talk was that it was an ex Gordon Ramsay chef starting up his own place. I am not sure whether that chef is still involved and I am not sure whether a Gordon Ramsay lineage is still a recommendation, however, the Palmerston is still excellent.

Yelp
In order to define The Palmerston as a gastro pub, the term has to take on an entirely new meaning, which very few so called places would be able to live up to. Yes, there is the air of traditional pub about the wood paneled interior, the bar and indeed the name, but everything about it is thoughtful, well designed and modern. As for the food menu, you will find steak and chips, but beautifully done and sitting alongside Casteluchio del Monte lentils with smoked sausage, salsa verdi and black olive crout and whole baked seabream with grilled vegetable relish, oregano and saffron aioli. Do not expect a cheap meal for a fiver as it is pricey, more like fine dining than gastro pub in my opinion. It is always pleasantly lively and understandably popular. There is nothing about The Palmerston that is too showy, just simple but perfect.

Yelp
One of the best gastropubs I have dined at in South London, with a quality selection of beers, ales and cider to boot. Worth checking out, but best to book in advance if you plan to visit on the weekend.

Yelp
One of two very good eating pubs along this stretch of road; the food is good, the beer well kept, and on a balmy summer's evening you can comfortably sit outside. I have heard people say they've had the occasional duff meal here, but on the half dozen or so occasions I've eaten at the Palmerston, I've not encountered this. Incidentally, as a bit of trivia, apparently much of the planning for The Great Train Robbery was done here.

Yelp
All our visiting family have been here with us over the years as it is a great pub with great food. Last night's meal was no different. I has grilled goats cheese with caramelised pears & celery and walnut salad. The flavours were amazing together. My husband & I shared the cote de boeuf which came with dauphinois. Another great course. We finished with a shared chocolate pithivier (pie)..I was so full but I couldn't stop eating. I love this place.

Yelp
Gorgeous pub with a restaurant in the back and a few tables in the main bar. The food is spectacular and quite pricey. Great wine selection and friendly staff. This is more fine dining than a local pub and is always busy. There are nice benches out on the street which are lovely in the summer and handy for any smokers. Quite a fancy restaurant for special occasions. The decor is lovely.

Yelp
wasn't particularly impressed by The Palmerston, despite the reviews. however 2 stars may be harsh. the venue is passed its best and really could with a spruce up. dirty toilets and a new paint job in order. we came late on Saturday night ordered mains only and waited nearly 45 mins. my steak was decent but my friends very fatty and more rare than medium. I think the fish dish excelled. wine list is extensive, plenty by the glass which is good thing. service wasn't bad at all. but to describe osso bucco risotto as delicate seemed a bit off. I wouldn't bother going again. Sorry. it's a 40s and over restaurant living off past glories in my opinion

Yelp
One of Lordship Lane's many fine watering holes, The Palmerston is somewhat more upmarket than other pubs along the lane. As such the atmosphere is quieter and the drinks are more pricey, however this makes for a more family friendly environment than some of the other pubs. The outdoor seating area also means that a summer's day will not go to waste at the Palmerston.

Yelp
Excellent pre dinner pub, made all the better as they do Harvey's Best!

Yelp
We went in here expecting a lot as the average price for a main course is around £17.00 unless you are vegetarian. The food was very nice if a bit small. Vegetables have to be ordered separately making the price even higher. The problem I had was that they added an "optional" one pound to the bill and you would only know if you looked at the receipt. I would gladly pay the one pound but they also add a 10% service charge in which your charitable donation is included so the palmerston is gaining from the money supposedly going to charity, which I think is a bit wrong. I don't think I would go here again as for the same amount of money you can go to quite a high quality restaurant. Not a bad place but felt a bit ripped off.

Yelp
Great pub. I've been here a couple of times with friends and we've always had a nice time. Drinks and food are tasty and all the people who go there are nice and friendly. It can get a little noisy but it's bearable.

Yelp
This place is simply amazing. Have eaten at a lot of good restaurants before, and the Palmerston is right up with them. One of my favourite places on Lordship lane.

Yelp
A favourite, the Palmerston gives gastropubs a good name. Great combination of atmosphere and food. Mains are priced £10-17, but are good value in my view. I'd love more veggie options, but The Palmerston illustrates why people want to live in East Dulwich.

Yelp
One of the best gastropubs in London! The menu changes fairly often and the food is absolutely amazing. They have got a great selection of wines too. Maybe a little pricey but worth paying for such lovely food!
