Austin Pizza Restaurant and Music Venue the Parlor Is Closing - Eater Austin

"A very punk rock, vegan-friendly pizza restaurant and music venue is closing in Austin this April. The Parlor is shuttering in the Hyde Park neighborhood at 4301 Guadalupe Street on Tuesday, April 30. The Parlor’s closing is happening because the business’s unnamed landlord had died so the building is being sold, as reported by Chronicle. The family that owns the Parlor, owner Deborah Gill and her children, including daughter Autumn Spadaro and son David vonOhlerking, were given the opportunity to purchase the space for $3 million, but the family doesn’t have enough for the $600,000 downpayment. They had been hoping that perhaps the owners of the land would decrease the downpayment amount, but that didn’t happen. So to close out the Parlor, the family is shuttering the restaurant and finishing up all financial obligations without having to file for bankruptcy, per Chronicle. The restaurant team launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the staff in light of the shutter. They’re seeking $100,000 for severance, as well as paying back business loans. Founder Deborah Gill opened the Parlor originally in North Loop in 2000, and then expanded into Hyde Park in 2006. The family-run restaurant is known as a music venue that served fun pizza, including vegan meats, and easy drinks. The North Loop location closed in June 2011 because of “an outrageous rent increase imposed by the building’s owner” for the 4301 Guadalupe Street, Suite B address. For the Parlor’s last day, it’s hosting a music showcase starting at 6 p.m." - Nadia Chaudhury

Pizza was delicious. I ordered the singers pizza. It was hot and fresh when I arrived. The crust was nice and crunchy! Staff was helpful and friendly and came out right away (did curbside pick up). Will definitely come back again and try different pizzas.

There’s a great scene here weekend afternoons: older punkish (Everyone is welcome). Lots of good music. Decent pizza. Reasonably priced beer.

Xoch Itl

Google
Not too crowded. Barely got a spot to sit on. Had Guinness so I was happy with my love working on his phone

Google
Cool place! The pizza & drinks were tasty. Full bar & solid draft beer selection. Super friendly staff. We were there for a live music event. An Austin original! We'll be back. The patio is dog friendly.

Google
Pizza was awesome. Attended a Wholistic, and Maya physical physical show. It was so amazing... Healers, Reike Masters as well as artists, Meta Elysian is right next door

Google
Decent pizza shop with dive-bar feel. Happy hour all day Sunday

Google
Great pizza, available by the slice. This is a BBQ chicken pizza, pizza, homemade dough, fresh sauce, yummy all around!!

Erica Au

Google
I've never sat down here but I've ordered pizza a couple of times and it is absolutely fabulous. I get the Autumn's Deluxe which is pepperoni, Italian sausage, beef, onions, mushrooms and green peppers. The crust is done really well. Can't speak to the quality of the drinks or anything but the bartender that brings me the pizza is usually nice.

Yelp
BEST Got DAMN BAR IN AUSTIN . For Music, Pizza! And I'm not kiddin. I love the Parlor! You'll be doing yourself a favor and they'll take care of you. It's Chill, fun, and great people, killer fn pizza. Awesome music, and never a cover for shows. Step into the realm. This is old Austin. And Seriously, the friendliest bar in Austin Don't be a fool!

Yelp
Don't let the row of black coffins outside fool you: this is a pizza parlor, not a funeral parlor. But it's not really a pizza parlor, it's really a quintessential quirky Austin dive bar that hosts live music and serves some pizza on the side. Confused yet? This is the type of Austin hangout that used to typify Austin before the rent got too dang high, so go check it out while you still can. The Parlor is dark with black walls and vintage furniture that sometimes wobbles and vintage Austin concert flyers wallpapering the bathrooms. If I take too long in there, it's only because I'm reading the walls and remembering when bands we knew and loved in college played venues we knew and loved in college, most of which are now lost to time and the rising rents of our fair city. They have a nice stage and sound system and often host live rock shows. They have a full bar with local and regional beers on draft and cool bartenders. They serve thick, loaded pizza by the giant slice for under $5. They have a large front porch and a tarp-covered patio with tables outside by the row of coffins. People sometimes sit on those, too. I really miss the weird in Austin, but if you look hard enough, you'll find the pockets of original funky places like this, where it still exists.

Yelp
To get a feel of old Austin, this is it for a dive bar that's midtown with amazing pizza. I went to see some live music and have some drinks. But the pizza was so tasty and an incredible surprise at how good the dough is. They're hand tossed and there's a variety of topping selections. The bartender was a bit preoccupied doing other things behind the bar but there wasn't a long wait, so it was fine. There's a good size stage for the band and the sound is good and not too loud. The bathrooms are unisex and have the walls covered in old posters of past shows of long ago. That was fun to just be in the washroom and read all of them. If you don't know where it's at, drive slow as you could miss it. My GPS was a bit slow in saying of arrived, so I had to circle the block because I missed it. LOL it's a dive bar but in all the good ways. Plenty of parking too. It was an extra win as they have Guinness.

Yelp
After 6 months of living a block away from this place, my husband and I finally checked this place out and we wish we visited sooner! Currently, due to covid, only outdoor seating is available, but all the seating is under an outdoor tent. The pizza and beer selection is great. This is definitely out go-to spot whenever we want pizza, a late night snack, or a place to chill with a friend. We've tried so far Dejay's, Singer's, Kyli's pizza and loved every single one of them. I love how they make the crust and they don't put too much sauce either. They also don't skimp on the toppings which is a plus too.. We can't wait to try the others!

Yelp
Best pizza in town. The service is very good, it is family run and needs our support as a community. One of the very few actually legit punk pizza places in Austin. A++++

Yelp
I just really wanted a SLICE of pizza and found this place near to the UT campus. I was there around 5pm and the pepperoni was the only flavor they had at that time. But the staff was so cool and she saw that I was very thirsty and hot the time I got in, so she immediately asked me if I want to have any water first. I felt very welcomed and relaxed there. The pizza was also decent. The indoor decorations were also pretty cool.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Great selection of beers and the pizza is top notch. Handmade sauce puts all others around here to shame. A+

Yelp
Keep Austin Weird. This is a punk music palace that is also A healthy eating pizza parlor With a line of coffins outside the seating space. (Yes, they are real coffins. The cheap black plastic ones you buy for an econo funeral.) A punk bar with options for vegan and gluten free? If you go vegan, a lot of punk songs have to be seriously reworked. Misfits Gone Vegan: "This Street We Walk Upon This Corner Full of Piss and Fear Is Not an Awful Place Because Zucchini Pizza's Near." * How is the vegan pizza? We went here because classical-music-loving vegan love of the life wanted to have a real pizza. Vegan's rarely get to have good pizza because vegan cheese is not a thrill. So she was hoping the Parlor would be okay. * Samuel C - the omnivore who loves head-thrashing metal - loved the place. Vegan love of the life gave me her pizza. * The vegan liked the cheese all right. She had a hard time with the thick chewy dough that was the crust. Samuel C likes his dough to stand up and be noticed. He thought the tomato sauce was great. The vegetables were perfectly al dente And the pizza was a great way to have junk food and still be good for you too. So there were as many contradictions in my house after the pizza As there are at the Guadelupe establishment itself. * In many other cities, the Parlor would be a legendary destination, because it has character up the snoot. In Austin, the weird gets lost in a sea of weird. "20, 20, 20, 4 Hours to Go. I Wanna be Sedated. And if you make my crust gluten free You'll be venerated". Next week a statue of Joe Strummer of the Clash in tofu.
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
Very expensive and taste like frozen pizza... bottom of crust burnt and toppings needed to be cooked more. Vegan cheese had no taste. Better option? Lil' Nonna's or Big Nonna's.

Yelp
The Parlor is a special, special place. I've been coming for many years now, and there are so many heartwarming little details about this place that have me returning again and again. Not to be unnecessarily cloying, but have you seen their bathrooms? Wallpapered to death with old show flyers for hundreds of beloved acts in a most disheveled swoon-worthy fashion. Add delicious craft beer to the mix, delicious pizza/salads, pool tables, and the best jukebox ever (lots of early Brian Eno), and you've got yourself... a bar this town would truly miss if it were to ever go under. Don't ever go, Parlor. We love you. Extra points for reformatting the sitting area to suit social distancing guidelines during the panini. Extra extra points for having sweet, cute bartenders who seem to always have your back.

Ashley H.

Yelp
Been going here for 10 years. The pizza is amazing. They have great (and loud) punk shows every week. They are a "take no shit" place, so if you're an asshole you're going to get treated like one.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Good pizza but slowest service ever. Could sell so much more beer and pizza! Worth a visit For the patient!!
google avatar

Rose R.

Yelp
Always deliciously welcoming, and the pizza rocks too! Wanna real taste or sip of Austin? You found it. Covid safe, vegan friendly, pets welcome. & Don't forget the Parlor Sauce:)

Nick D.

Yelp
Staff are assholes, was leaving a show with some friends, stopped outside in the parking lot to smoke near the coffins, rifled through my pockets to find a lighter and was pulling things out which included a unopened mini bottle of vodka that was in my coat pocket. Next thing I know some dude in a dirty grey shirt and beard walks up to me and shouts "what's that!" I literally thought he was a drunk stranger trying to cause a scene so I try to put it away and say "it's unopened vodka" turns out the guy works there, super aggressively yanks the bottle out of my hands and immediately leaves and shouts "we could get fined!!!" We caused no trouble the whole night and were on our way out.

Yelp
The hours on Yelp aren't up to date, check their Instagram for up to date info. Tonight (Friday) they were open until 11 with patio seating outside. They have waitstaff who come by the tables or you can order via QR code. The tables are perfectly spaced for social distancing, and being out in a safe atmosphere was a wonderful touch of normalcy! They take COVID-19 precautions seriously and as someone who is susceptible, I greatly appreciate that. Outside is open seating but to sit inside you need to make reservations. I have a soft spot for their cheese garlic bread and vegan pizza, yum! I will be back...
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
I've been coming to The Parlor for the past 12 years. The pizza is delicious and they have a great beer selection. They also have a great vegan chicken sausage that tastes pretty close to the real thing. I went last night and noticed that that they've added some new entertainment. They now have 3 pinball machines, a big buck hunter hd game, pacman, and a race car game.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a very special Austin staple that is true to Austin and its artists/musicians. I had my birthday here recently and the Bartender Rachel took very special care of me and my guests. She even went out and got me a cake for my birthday. There was tons of local art on the walls and the food was amazing as always. We brought a large group in with us and she handled the increased traffic wonderfully. Everyone had a great time and loved their pies.
google avatar

Yelp
The best New York style pizza I have had, maybe ever! This place is a diamond in the rough. It is a pizza parlor with a funeral parlor theme and it is a dive bar with a jukebox too! What's not to like? They are definitely keeping Austin weird in a great way. I'll be back very soon.

Summer M.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a while now and it just always gets better and better. The staff is super nice and the bartender is really cool and attentive. The pizza is great and the music is always good too. I feel like 2022 has definitely been their year and it's stepped up their game. Love the small community feel and it's just good vibes all around.

Yelp
The Parlor is low-brow, pure Austin, dump bar. And when I say Austin dump, that means it's not like a dump you'd find in the middle of Detroit or LA. I mean that it's that classy dumpy place that lets you know you're most definitely in Austin. Old-school pac-man video game (you know, the table one where you can play someone else) that doesn't even work. At least we couldn't seem to get it to work when we were there. Plus, it's dark and dingy in there... and the bathroom is pretty darn scary. Better off going in the bushes behind the bar - just don't get caught! The patio is nice - one of the tables has some problems so watch out for that. There are also a few sketchy characters that like to chat away on their phones on Sunday afternoons - avoid if possible. I did have a margarita that almost killed me here. The bartender might have been trying to off me so that she could get a piece of my brother. He's gay, lady! Please don't do that to me again! :) And the pizza is good. Mmmm mmm good. It's no Homeslice (Parlor crust is a little too thick), but it'll do when you're getting your drink on. I suggest staying away from the margs - do the beer or perhaps the mimosas if you're looking to get your weekend brunch drinking on. If you order a margarita and keel over after only one, I'm definitely gonna utter the words, "I told you so". Nah, I won't utter them, I'll shout them in your ear while you're passed out on the patio... that will be more fun.

Yelp
While visiting Austin my sister and I were looking for a vegan friendly place to get pizza. This place isn't fancy but the pizza is delicious and it was easy to find parking. Definitely recommend this place if you are looking to satisfy both vegans and meat eaters. They even have vegan french bread pizza, vegan cheese, vegan sausage, vegan pepperoni and vegan chicken.
google avatar

Bryan S.

Yelp
My favorite pizza joint in town that doubles as my favorite dive bar! Great pizza, friendly staff, an incredible jukebox, and I really admire the design changes they've made over the last year. What more could you ask for!?!

Ian M.

Yelp
I love the parlor! I'm so glad Deb and fam are making it work during these trying times. Marcos holds it down and keeps the ship working on his own at times. Tending bar and making pizza at the same time. So good to see when they're slammed with orders! Keep it goin!
google avatar

Roshan D.

Yelp
They are vegan friendly. Their vegan cheese is good. The vegan pizza is almost indistinguishable from the non vegan ones. Vegan pepperoni wasn't that good. The place is loud and noisy, and smoking is allowed, since it's a bar. They are pet friendly too.
google avatar

Brodie K.

Yelp
Ordered 2 pizzas from this place, first time ordering. Was really excited about trying it. Only one pizza got delivered. I'll called in to ask for help, first the guy tried to lie to me and tell me i only ordered one pizza, i have the receipt and know this isn't true. Next once he realized that wasn't believable he admitted to getting the order for both pizzas but forgetting to give the second one to the driver. Refused to do anything to help me, i could hear another woman behind him saying unfavorable things about the order as well. Awful experience, people who treat their customers like this shouldn't own businesses. Don't eat here.
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
An awesome dive bar with great beer and pizza. One thing that makes this place unique? Their vegan pizza toppings!
google avatar

Meg D.

Yelp
We ordered dinner from the parlor and it was as good as ever! They have unique (and delicious) options or a build your own. Ordering was easy using an app and ready on time with curbside pick up.

Samika D.

Yelp
For my second time eating here, I am highly dissatisfied. I order the Vegan cheese bread on 03/31/2019 and was told it would take 20 minutes. Upon receiving my order and going back to my car, I noticed the cheese was not all the way done. Being a vegan, I know the cheese texture is different and some cheeses melt differently but this was clearly undone. On top of that, it was cold, and tasteless. I had to add crushed peppers to make it somewhat edible, but that just made it worse.Truly, a terrifying experience.
google avatar

Summer S.

Yelp
Delicious vegan pizza pies are available here with homemade vegan toppings like vegan sausage, vegan pepperoni and vegan chik'un. The vegan topping are fantastic (thank you for having them!). A heavier hand with those vegan toppings would be helpful since their flavors are milder than the traditional versions. The dough is chewy and yummy, this is a fantastic traditional pizza with a vegan twist. Thank you for making vegan pizzas delicious!
google avatar

Lees H.

Yelp
This is long overdue but I love the Parlor's vegan options! The vegan cheese melts perfectly and their vegan "meats" are so tasty as well (the vegan chicken is my favorite)! *Plus, the Parlor is super chill and the bartenders are always friendly. I always recommend this place to friends!

Yelp
The Good: :: location. it's off of guadalupe and 43rd st, so it's terrific for students and residents of hyde park :: 2 pool tables, pac-man, and a pinball machine. sweet! :: plenty of tables inside for seating. additional seating at the bar :: full liquor bar. nice for the days you don't feel like guzzling beer :: jukebox! happy! :: toppings available for pizzas. try the italian sausage, pepperoni, artichokes, and feta! :: outside patio seating. limited but available, with about 6 or so tables The Bad: :: the inconsistency of the pizza quality. we've had it when it was absolutely delicious and we couldn't stop ranting and raving about it. recently it was not very good. undercooked, goopy cheese mess, and took an hour to come out to us (granted it was a fri night but people who came in AFTER us got their pizzas BEFORE us...come ON) The Ugly: :: smokers. there is a sign that says "no smoking within 15 feet of the door". do they care? no. everyone or most everyone on the patio is lit up puffing away with abandon, and it makes for a VERY unpleasant meal when all you can smell and taste is cig smoke. yuck. i understand that smokers like to frequent the parlor and that staff is friendly towards them. just don't bother to have that sign up when it's strictly for show. :: it was LOUD inside. the music was on so loudly we couldn't hear our conversations and eventually just kind of gave up. Would I go back? Not for a while. When it's good, it's good, but when it's not, it's really really not. The trick is to go during off-peak times so you can avoid the crowds, which unfortunately can sometimes suck. In the meantime, I'm going to Salvation Pizza to get my pizza fix. This place is BARELY IN.
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
Still the best pizza I've had in Austin. Get the one with the roasted red peppers and avocado. So damn good. They make vegan pizza too. Slayer on the speakers. Friendly staff. A little punk/hardcore oasis with a selection of craft beers and a shady patio. They have a TV but it usually plays music documentaries, not football. Yay.
google avatar

Nicki H.

Yelp
Holy Apples Batman...BEST VEGAN PIZZA IN AUSTIN. Johnny Rocket the Pizza Master is not only a magician at his craft but was incredibly kind. Love the atmosphere and will be back for sure! Do yourself a favor and check it out.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
This review is for the pizza specifically. Saw the Parlor on and "Austin's best" list and figured we'd give it a shot... not really what we anticipated. The crust was good but the toppings were of the same caliber as Dominos. Definitely was too expensive for the quality of food received.
google avatar

Sierra K.

Yelp
This is a bar, not a pizza parlor - be not deceived. The bar is very dark inside, with skulls and a very "death" feel to it. The customer service was not great, the lady taking my order was very abrupt and rude, however she did apologize afterwards which takes humility. The pizza was good, but a little greasy. I probably won't return here.
google avatar

Kyle A.

Yelp
Its the kind of dive that i hope never changes;) pizza is great. South park pinball n a pool table with sick tunes. Austin classic.
google avatar

Reese L.

Yelp
Amazing pizza but overpriced and no wifi. Their special was really , really good and the special sauce is spicy ranch .
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
Great pizza. Tough on crime. Bonus points for a place I can order a Pearl and live my Tommy pinball fantasies.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
She already knows what I want. Throwing a row of quarters in my hand, and nodding towards the jukebox. Outside, i'm cool, calm, and collected. Yet, inside my brain pops around like an adolescent teenage boy getting his first kiss. I stroll over to what is the best jukebox in this over-blown city. The familiar click of the jukebox numbered keys make me smile. I know shortly I will be sitting across the table from a beautiful conversationalist, sipping a well-needed drink, and quickly stuffing my face in one of the best pizzas you can have in Austin. Voi Vod...check Hank Williams, Sr. ......check Television......check Elvis Costello...check BauHaus........check Dead Kennedys....check Back to my seat, I sit. It's dark, enough. It's Sunday, enough. It's relaxing, enough. I laugh a little on the inside. Obviously on the outside, too. "What you laughing at?", she inquires. I look into her bright, lucid eyes. "All this, and we never waited in line", I state the obvious. Thank you Parlor. I will come to you until the day we both cease to exist.
google avatar

Bethany M.

Yelp
The gluten free crust is made in house and is delicious. Homemade sauces, ranch and very fresh ingredients. It's everything you want in a neighborhood pizza and bar. I love the creativity in the menu and the dark interior is well balanced by the friendly bartenders. The only suggestion I have is it would be nice if the restroom was a little cleaner. I will return anyway because I love the experience here and wish to support this place.

E S.

Yelp
Great little neighborhood spot. Highly recommend their vegan pizza! The crust and cheese are fantastic. Really appreciate their late hours for ordering the vegan pizza. There are many times I've craved something later at night and ordered from here. Chill vibes inside the place and friendly staff as well.

Yelp
We came here after I had just been hit on my Motorcycle, in desperate need of a beer and a slice of pizza. We ordered the Gunnar and ice cold beers. We wound up eating through two slices before we realized they had brought us the wrong pizza. We brought this to the bartenders attention, and he was beyond accommodating. The staff was more apologetic than the person who had hit me earlier in the day. The Gunnar turned out great and we could not have been happier with the way they took care of us.
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
A well-established neighborhood punk bar in Austin should exhibit a few characteristics and perfect imperfections. Situated near ASH is a divey, authentic, dim, grungy, and trusted regular's bar that has somehow retained family-ownership for many years. The beer options are as much as could be expected from a modest sized counter, but talent shines when helmed by Michael and Rachel - the drinks arguably being some of the best in town. The Parlor isn't for everyone though. If you're a souless chump, or love to pick fights, complain that (even though there are plenty of) topping options to suit your sand-only diets, can't stand great metal or punk riffs, then there are plenty of options down the street. Friends eat and drink here. Local artists host exhibitions, and aspiring musicians come here to play music. No matter what, when your 9-5 has ended, The Parlor is there to pour a cheap drink. Uppers: pizza, cheap beer, pizza, music, drinks poured by Rachel and Michael Downers: Loud if you can't stand it, cigarettes on the patio. Get over it.
google avatar

Shinta S.

Yelp
Not the best pizza I've had. We did a take out for a large Gunnar's. First of all, I am not a big fan of thick crust. But I am willing to overlook that part if the overall taste is good. It is the tomato sauce that fails me. It maybe perfectly fine for other people but I find it a bit tad on the too-sweet side. Maybe I'll stick to the beer next time.
google avatar

Leif D.

Yelp
This is by far the best Vegan pizza I have ever had. I am normally not a fan of Vegan cheese, but this cheese was creamy and perfect. The Vegan sausage was spiced right too, I also like that it's made with beans. The place is pretty dirty but the lights are dim.

Paige G.

Yelp
This is the most repulsive establishment I have ever stepped foot into. To be honest, I'm embarrassed I even gave this place a chance, but I was rudely awakened when every individual staff member was condescending towards me as well as inept at their basic roles. This is a sad excuse for a bar (terrible pizza-it was burnt) and they couldn't even bother to clean their glasses before serving us an under-poured pitcher. There were dead crickets in the corner of the bathroom, and I'm saddened by the fact that this bar has lost every last hint of pride in its bones. Only sadistic divorcee's would voluntarily spend more than a minute in this establishment. It's just not worth the disappointment. Best wishes to whomever is looking for a place to have a beer while watching the game... I promise you'll find a better joint.
google avatar

D G.

Yelp
Being only my second time here, I was ready and excited to eat their being that I enjoyed my first experience so much with my kids. Second time around, I was brought to the realization that it's not a kid friendly place. The first time they allowed my son's to play pool with no problems.Spend about 10.00 on two pinball machines and one pool table. Second time around, we went to ask for change to have them play, and we were told if we only supervised and taught them. My kids are not the outgoing type, but I do understand their concerns was well. Regardless, we will not be conning back. Its a shame, but I don't want to fell unwelcome where ever I eat. Great place food, but just don't take your kids their. Food 8.5 Customer Service: 4.5
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
The pizza is soooooo expensive for how subpar it is, which is a shame because it's so quick and convenient. If you want more than one topping you have to pay lots extra and it ends up being over $20 every time for one medium sized pizza. The drinks are also overpriced for a dive bar.
google avatar

Jaime M.

Yelp
Two clowns, a dirty cyclist and a bevy of punk rockers and bikers meander into a pizza joint ... Sounds like some setup for a really bad joke, but it's really just an ordinary evening at the Parlor. At first I was worried that my Parlor love was just based on the fact that I lived a block from there, but now that I live, like, several miles away and still want to come back, I know it's the pizza place for me! Now, the pizza isn't perfection, but it comes close. If you like a thicker crust and some creative toppings, it's the place to order a whole pie. You and a date won't finish one in a single meal, but if the date goes well, then you've got breakfast, too! And trust me, their pizzas are good cold. I'm not a vegan, but if I'm feeling the need to be a little healthier, their vegan-cheese options are much better than others I've had. What really sealed me on this place was taking six kids and three out-of-town adults here for lunch one day. We basically took over the place, using both pool tables and the video game console to entertain the kids (they were free), jamming tables together and otherwise being obnoxious. Luckily there was only one other customer in the place, and the bartender/cook/sole worker was really friendly to all. Two large cheese pizzas, two orders of garlic bread and plenty of drinks (good beer selection, by the way) later, we walked out with 10 stuffed people for under $50.
