Austin Pizza Restaurant and Music Venue the Parlor Is Closing - Eater Austin
"A very punk rock, vegan-friendly pizza restaurant and music venue is closing in Austin this April. The Parlor is shuttering in the Hyde Park neighborhood at 4301 Guadalupe Street on Tuesday, April 30. The Parlor’s closing is happening because the business’s unnamed landlord had died so the building is being sold, as reported by Chronicle. The family that owns the Parlor, owner Deborah Gill and her children, including daughter Autumn Spadaro and son David vonOhlerking, were given the opportunity to purchase the space for $3 million, but the family doesn’t have enough for the $600,000 downpayment. They had been hoping that perhaps the owners of the land would decrease the downpayment amount, but that didn’t happen. So to close out the Parlor, the family is shuttering the restaurant and finishing up all financial obligations without having to file for bankruptcy, per Chronicle. The restaurant team launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the staff in light of the shutter. They’re seeking $100,000 for severance, as well as paying back business loans. Founder Deborah Gill opened the Parlor originally in North Loop in 2000, and then expanded into Hyde Park in 2006. The family-run restaurant is known as a music venue that served fun pizza, including vegan meats, and easy drinks. The North Loop location closed in June 2011 because of “an outrageous rent increase imposed by the building’s owner” for the 4301 Guadalupe Street, Suite B address.
