The Rabbit Hole is a charming brunch spot with inviting vibes, serving up mouthwatering dishes like crispy chicken and waffles and nostalgic congee in a cozy, modern space.
"The smashburger is why you’re coming to The Rabbit Hole in Mission-Bernal. It has that standard thin, crisped-up patty covered in perfectly melted cheese, but the pickled vegetables it’s topped with make this funky burger unlike any other in the city. Unfortunately, the rest of the slightly Taiwanese menu is a bit inconsistent or disappointing. Still, the ample amount of seating keeps locals pouring in after work to grab a drink from their impressive cocktail menu—the savory ones with ingredients like duck fat-washed brandy and Shaoxing wine make a great pairing with the burger. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth photo credit: Carly Hackbarth photo credit: Carly Hackbarth photo credit: Carly Hackbarth Food Rundown photo credit: Carly Hackbarth Smashed Burger The best thing on the menu, and one of the best burgers in SF. It's topped with pickled carrots, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as melted sharp cheddar, all on a shimmering brioche bun. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth Fried Chicken Sandwich On some days, the spicy chicken sandwich is excellent. It’s got a craggily crust, and the nam pla honey glaze gets the sweat dripping down foreheads. But on the bad days, it’s like they turned the flavor, temperature, and texture notches all the way down. If you’re not willing to risk it, stick to the burger. photo credit: Joanie McCollom Fries Excellent. Light and airy, these thin fries are coated in nori and togarashi and served with a side of gochujang ketchup that’s not overpowering. photo credit: Carly Hackbarth Crispy Scallion Pancake Skip. These scallion pancakes lack any satisfying crunch or flavor. They’re overcooked to the point of dryness, and instead of mixing minced scallions into the batter, they just toss a few loose ones on top. Sesame Peanut Noodles This bowl smells great, but the noodles are dry, crunchy, and undercooked. Despite being coated in peanut sauce, there’s not enough peanut or sesame flavor, and the whole dish ends up tasting like it’s been sitting out for awhile and got watered down." - Ricky Rodriguez
"The Rabbit Hole is a casual all-day Taiwanese cafe and bar in Bernal Heights—but they’re currently open for limited hours, so make sure to check before you go. The menu has things like pork bao buns, sesame peanut noodles, and a burger with house pickles. On the drink side, expect creative cocktails like a seaweed-infused gin, kombu, and squid ink concoction that you can sip on inside or on their spacious back patio. " - Ricky Rodriguez
"Cortland Avenue has a new go-to for baijiu and youtiao, or Chinese liquor and crullers. The Rabbit Hole opened on Boxing Day 2023. Owner Joan McCollom is bringing her Chinese and Taiwanese heritage to bear in the former Old Devil Moon space." - Lauren Saria
"Mission Local reports that a new restaurant and bar called the Rabbit Hole will take over the former Old Devil Moon space in Bernal Heights. It comes from Joan McCollom who was “born and raised in Los Angeles after her mother immigrated from Taiwan.” McCollom plans to offer dishes including youtiao, sometimes called Chinese doughnuts, and a full bar." - Lauren Saria
