Where to Drink a Guinness in the Indianapolis Area This Winter | Eater

"This historic restaurant has operated in its exact location since 1894. It is housed in the architecturally significant Athenaeum alongside the German Cultural Center and a local YMCA. During the warmer months, 2,000 patrons can frolic and dance under the night sky in the outdoor biergarten, listening to indie bands traveling through Circle City. Whether you’re indoors or out, a Guinness pairs beautifully with traditional Bavarian dishes such as bratwurst, schnitzel, and sauerbraten." - Brian Garrido

I'm a sucker for German food so I was excited to get to visit the Rathskeller. Not only do they have a huge menu of German specialties, but the location is super cool and historical. It really does transport you to a traditional German restaurant while you're here. The food itself was delicious. I tried the sauerbraten which is a German pot roast and it was absolutely delicious! The pretzels are also tasty, though beware of that spicy mustard! Prices are a little high, but we visited for lunch and appreciated the lower cost of their lunch menu. They do have a kids menu and our daughters enjoyed their food as well. Service was friendly and our food came out quickly as well. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, you have to give this place a shot!

Google
Really good German food! I had the schnitzel. My husband had the ox tail soup. My grandson had the roulade (without gravy), and we got a sample player of bratwurst to share. On one plate or another, there was sauerkraut and beets and German potato salad. Plus, they brought warm, chewy pretzels as the "bread" for the table. My husband loved the mustard so much he wanted to buy a jar to bring home. Alas, they don't sell it. Very attentive and helpful service.

Google
Very traditional restaurant, it is really German and looks it is there for long time. It’s clean despite is an old place, but this is what makes your experience better, once you feel you are in Europe. Dishes are really German with NO adapts to American dietary. Only the apple strudel disappointed me but I completely understand once it’s hard to make a fresh one once there is no high flow orders for this desert.

Google
Hands down the best place I went for food in Indy. Great beer list and massive location. Many floors and the ability to host a wedding or function is possible. Great German flair with an outdoor concert hall. Food comes with pretzels and bread. You also get a soup/salad and 2 sides. Pricier but with all the food it’s worth it. Cooked perfectly with a large portion. Would come back forsure.

Google
Great food with ample portions and friendly service. The meat was delicious and the sides were outstanding. Best German potato salad that I’ve ever had - perfectly balanced. As a visitor to the city it was also great to experience the history, while also enjoying a thriving restaurant. I have a dairy allergy and they handled it extremely well with a handy allergen menu.

Google
We had a wonderful lunch, it was SO cozy and warm! Our server was amazing & food was fabulous. We ordered mushrooms for an appetizer…that was before we knew that you get a pretzel with mustard on the house. The horseradish was really good, but don’t take big amounts unless you’re ready for your eyes to water!!! The stuffed mushrooms we so tasty with stringy cheese yum! Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing was just the right size and very fresh. Jagerschizel was fried perfectly and sides were great. Can’t wait to go back!

Google
Best place we have been to in Indy. Clearly a very well lived establishment as it had quite a few people there right at opening. We started with a soft pretzel to share, it came with a great cheese dip, and a spicy mustard that was outstanding!! We then got the Hot Wrust platte to share. It came with lots of sausages, sauerkraut, and picked beats. It was an excellent meal, it again came with the hot mustard, and a more mild Dijon. For dessert we got the apple turn over with ice cream. The atmosphere is cozy and comforting, I would come back here again for sure. Our server Marcus was attentive and helpful with any questions that we had.

Google
The food was okay but not like the German food I'm used to and I was raised around German speaking/food preparing family. I've not had potato pancakes like that before. I couldn't eat it. The German potato salad reminded me of a box from the store. My schnitzel, hot dressing salad and onion soup was good. It was loud in there from the bar.

Yelp
It only took a minute or two to greet us. We arrived early for our 5pm reservation, but they were able to seat us right away. The restaurant was very busy, but being Valentine's Day we weren't surprised. We were seated at a table in a back room. My wife had to go around another table just to get to her seat though because another table was crowded near ours. The restaurant seemed very clean and brightly decorated in almost every room. There was soft German style music playing in the background and pictures on the wall of what the restaurant looked like in the past. I kind of liked the tiles on the ceiling too. Not sure why, just sort of added to the atmosphere of the room I guess. I went to the bathroom before we ordered. It was a little further away from our table than I normally like, but I needed the exercise, so I didn't worry about it. There's an initial inner room before you go into the room with the stalls. There was someone in that inner room applying nail polish that stunk up the place. I'm not sure, but I think they may have been an employee, however, I didn't exactly see a name badge or anything to confirm it. I went into the room with stalls and noticed that while it was very clean in there, it was also extremely cold in there. I saw a space heater and thought it was specifically to warm up the room, but when I used the bathroom again after dinner later, I noticed it was blowing under the bathroom sinks, probably to keep the pipes from freezing. Our server, Lacey came by to take our orders. I ordered one of their sweet Riesling wines and my wife ordered a dark porter beer. I enjoyed my wine, it was perfectly sweet and not too dry, just the way I like it. My wife enjoyed her beer as well. I ordered the Jaegerschnitzel with creamed spinach and red cabbage. I also got a small spinach side salad with hot bacon dressing. My wife also ordered the Jaegerschnitzel with red cabbage, but opted for spaetzle as her other side. She also got a small house side salad with hot bacon dressing. While we waited for our food, the server brought out a basket that had a giant soft pretzel with both a spicy brown mustard dip and a cheese dip. Not being a fan of spicy brown mustard, I tried it with the cheese dip. The pretzel was perfectly warm and chewy and not too salty and the tangy cheese dip went well with it. My wife tried some of the pretzel with the spicy mustard. Apparently, the spicy mustard is loaded with horseradish and rivals the spiciness of St.Elmo's shrimp cocktail sauce. She said she had to be careful not to breathe out her nose too much while eating it because it really cleared and burned her sinuses. She still kept going back for more though. Our salads arrived in small saucer like dishes with the dressing on the side. My spinach salad had fresh leaves of spinach topped with bacon, cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms and hard-boiled egg. The hot bacon dressing wasn't very hot and was sweeter than expected, but the salad was good overall. My wife's house side salad had mixed greens and colorful fresh salad toppings. She also thought the bacon dressing was a bit sweet, but she enjoyed her salad as well. After our salads came our entrees. The Jaegerschnitzel is their signature schnitzel topped with a creamy brown sauce of wild mushrooms, shallots, fresh garlic, red wine and select herbs. I enjoyed my side of creamed spinach even though it tasted more like spinach cooked with cream of mushroom soup. It still had a good flavor and some decent seasoning to it. I didn't like the red cabbage as I had hope I would. I didn't realize it would be cooked in red wine vinegar. It was way too sweet for my palate. I tried adding salt to it, but no amount of salt was making it any less sweet or more appetizing, so I ended up not finishing it. While the Jaegerschnitzel was very tasty and I very much liked the sauce, it was difficult to cut. I wish they would have given us sharper knives to use for cutting it. My wife agreed with me about the Jaegerschnitzel, but she actually liked the red cabbage the way it was cooked and she enjoyed her tender spaetzle noodles. Lacey was very attentive and tried to make sure we enjoyed our experience there. I will definitely return someday, I just won't get their red cabbage.

Yelp
Without a reservation, my family and I were able to get a free-for-all table in the bar area. The service was quick and the food was good. It felt very traditionally German inside, with the decor and features of each German state. The service quality was decent, but I have been here before with a reservation, and it has always been good. I just chalked it up to them being busy. Two of my family members had an error in their orders. My mother ordered no cheese and extra sauerkraut on her reuben and received no cheese or sauerkraut. We were in a bit of a hurry, so she was fine without it, but was a little disappointed. My aunt ordered a canned beer without a glass, and her beer came inside of a glass. My order was correct, but my tenderloin was a little on the soggy side instead of crispy. Overall, I was a little disappointed after hyping up the restaurant so much. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to come here, so maybe a reservation would have rewarded us with a better experience.

Yelp
Great place to go for a St. Patrick's Day festival. Lasted a few days in 2024 and had a blast. We went on one evening and saw world class Irish dancers and bagpipers. Mood and ambience was very jovial. Excellent food options typical Irish fare. Naturally they have corned beef. I went for fish and chips. Plus a pint of Guinness. Only disappointment was the Guinness was in a plastic cup. We all know how it tastes better poured properly in a proper Guinness glass. In spite of that bar service was quick and lines were pretty short about 6 -9 people due to several bartenders .

Yelp
Transparently- I can only attest to the Ampitheatre of Rathskellar, but have yet to had someone visit me in Indy without taking them there! Great beer, music, and vibes. Definitely a gem of Indianapolis for weekend life.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for fabulous, authentic Bavarian cuisine and a great experience, the Rathskeller is the BEST place to go in Indianapolis. This iconic restaurant has been in business longer than I can remember and is located in the historic Athenaeum Building. I recommend reservations for dinner but, yesterday, we were able to walk in for midday lunch with no wait. We sat in the bar surrounded by deer and moose heads and stone walls. It does feel like an old German castle. Danke, our server, was friendly, attentive and efficient. Water and food was served quickly. The lunch menu has many German options and a few Indiana favorites such as Pork Tenderloin. Their German breads are phenomenal. We had a starter German pretzel, that was warm from the oven. The German mustard has an amazing horseradish flavor that wakes up your tastebuds. I had the tuna sandwich on marble rye. The sandwich is large and the marble rye absolutely delicious. The tuna is creamy and flavorful, by far the best tuna sandwich I've had in a while. The German potato salad is served hot and is FRESH and perfectly tangy and sweet. Portions are generous. My hopelessly Midwestern husband had the Pork Tenderloin which is served on a Kaiser roll. The tenderloin was perfectly seasoned and tender with a perfect breading. He gave it a rare "5" ranking it among the best in Indiana. He also had the wedged fried potatoes that he said were very good. We explored the building after lunch, which I highly recommend. The building was designed by Vonnegut and Bonn in the mid 1890's and is German Renaissance Revival style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rathskeller does events; I've been to weddings and work dinners and the food is always top notch. There is metered street parking nearby, but it's hard to find on weekends. The building is old and there are a lot of steps. There is an elevator and ramps for some accessibility. I highly recommend. Great food, great service, amazing architecture.

Yelp
After an event downtown, my family and I had a recommendation to come here. The normal dining room was booked for the night, but we were able to catch a table in the bar area. Our food was great, and the portions are huge, just like you should expect for a German place. I am not even sure if spinach artichoke dip is a thing in Germany, but this was the best dip I have ever had. As the night went on, it ended up getting more and more packed with the bar scene. Our server/bartender was very courteous and helped clear the way for us to leave, as we had some older ladies in our group that needed some extra help to get through the crowd. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. The menu is extensive, and we are sure to come back to try more the next time we're in town!

Yelp
We visited for a lite meal before a show at The Murat (yes, I know they sold naming rights). We cobbled together two appetizers, the veggie of the day and the Rathskellar Salat for the two of us. Shrimp cocktail featured 8 medium not overcooked shrimp and an excellent flavorful cocktail sauce. The star for me was the well seasoned Grilled Portabella. I added blue cheese crumbles to the salat which melded well with the Parmesan vinaigrette. Service from Alyssa Mc was excellent in a fairly full dining room. She asked if we were attending 'the show' and said she'd be sure to get us out on time. Thoughtful. I wish they had more fresh vegetables on the 'sides' menu.

Yelp
Stopped in for some very good German food. The jalapeño poppers tasted great, and the added Cajun chicken stuffed inside set off the great flavor. We also tried the Hot Wurst Plate. The four different sausages with the sauerkraut were amazing and cooked perfectly. If you're in the mood for some good German food, this is the place in Indy to visit!

Yelp
We ate lunch at the Rathskeller during their German Fest. We got seated right away. Their food is always amazing! We started off with the chicken cordon bleu fingers that are stuffed with cheese and ham and served with honey mustard to dip them in. My all time favorite app is their stuffed mushrooms. They are cheesy, creamy, and have such good flavor! Pretzels are served before your food comes out. They come with spicy mustard and it definitely has a kick! I asked for cheese and it was just alright. I got the schnitzel and it came with a lemon sauce to dip in. The sauce was not my favorite. It came with sauerkraut and their German potato salad. Both were delicious!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
A local suggested this restaurant to us and I can't recommend it enough- even if you're vegetarian like me! It's got a very cool German hunting lodge/bier garten vibe. The service was great (thanks to our awesome server Alyssa (sp?) ). And the food was delicious - but beware the spicy mustard! My husband had the rouladen which he said was good. The only bad thing about my Greek pasta plate was that I was unable to eat it all. The beer is good, the food is bettered and service was excellent. (Vegetarians beware there is ham and bacon in the sauerkraut)
google avatar

Yelp
Atmosphere, Atmosphere Atmosphere: 100! This is a must visit for the interior and exterior. That biergarten is so awesome! Beer: It's probably good, but I don't know how to judge. Food?? Meh. For some reason, the German entrees are all very pricey and not worth the price point. We did love the stuffed mushrooms app. The mushrooms are fresh, cream cheese and cheese were melted perfectly on top. I wished we had ordered two of these. I will definitely come back for the atmosphere and mushroom app. But I will stay away from the entrees and that worst wurst salat.

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner before an awesome show. This place is so cute inside with mini rooms and dining areas, it's definitely old school German charm. Our server Jennifer was excellent she was full of so much info on the menu and made good recommendations. We celebrated National margarita day with top shelf margaritas that were delicious. Several different things were ordered. We all enjoyed the stuffed mushroom appetizer. I wasn't very hungry and ordered the French onion soup which is made in house the beef. The croutons are all homemade. I enjoyed a salad with homemade Ranch dressing. Other winners were the schnitzel, the salmon and the smoked pork chops. The band Woomblies was amazing so much fun here, they had a really good setup inside with a large area and big tables, a different food menu was available in the band area. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I hate to say this, but the food has gotten even worse. As a native German, I cannot endorse this place. While some of the food looks good, it is all lacking in taste. It is so sad. Especially since the prices went up too. No wonder America doesn't rate German food highly. The only thing I can enjoy here is the beer. It would be such a beautifyl venue inside and out. Enjoy the non German dishes, like the Krautballs or the pasta. Go to the Kellerbar or the beergarden for some great beer and leave it at that.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
The vibe of the restaurant was so fun and beautiful!! Our waiter was wonderful too. My mom loved the food and it was definitely a new experience for both of us, as I don't know much about German food. The building itself is beautiful and we loved learning the history about it :)

Yelp
Stopped in before a concert across the street. Had a few beers, a pretzel, and a bowl of beef stew. It was hearty and full of flavor. The service was attentive and it was busy because it Was Just a few days before Christmas.

Brannon H.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to trying Rathskeller, but was soooooo disappointed. I was expecting a pretty lively atmosphere, but walked into a huge space that was virtuallly empty. There are probably 40 tables inside and there were 5 occupied including my party of one. I'm from out of town and was told to get a pork tenderloin sandwich. It resembled a grocery store chicken patty, but with less flavor. I also had the spaetzle noodles and German potato salad, which I've had plenty of times with my German great grandmother. The spaetzle had some sort of watered down beef gravy (I think), but was pretty tasteless. Then German potato salad was very heavy on the vinegar but was also dark brown which was a surprise. All of the food had a flavor profile which would have been suitable for a 5 year old, and could best be described as "blaaaaah".

Debora S.

Yelp
Food was awesome and the service even better! Thanks to Jennifer for a lovely evening.

Gerard S.

Yelp
The food was decent and authentic and the servers were helpful. Whoever they have coordinating the events at the beergarden is absolutely abysmal. We specifically asked the workers up front if we would be allowed in the beergarden after visiting the restaurant and were assured that we'd be allowed in by multiple people. After spending a good amount on dinner, we were then told at the back door that we were not given correct information. When confronted, the front door workers denied ever saying that and the venue did absolutely nothing to rectify that error. It was especially embarrassing because I had guests from out of town.
google avatar

Yelp
You can't beat the history and old feel of the Rathskeller. The dining room and bar have so much history and the Biergarten with the stage is a staple in Indianapolis. This was my first time eating in the dining room and love the pretzels with cheese and spicy mustard as the free bread basket. Overall the food was heavy on the meat, but as expected. Not my normal food preference but worth a try. Service was excellent with knowledge of the history and answering questions.
google avatar

Trice T.

Yelp
First time at this German spot. The food was great with plenty to share. The service staff was knowledgeable and helpful. The ambiance is heart for small or large groups and is somewhere in N would coaster again B when I'm in Indy.
google avatar

Robert S.

Yelp
Old style German pub. Fantastic atmosphere with terrific service. Plenty of variety. Summer offers the beer garden which is a great way to relax. Easy parking all around as this restaurant is located downtown Indianapolis. Try the mustard with the sausage and pretzel appetizer, it's got a real kick!!! Enjoy

Jason H.

Yelp
Great German beer, get a big stein and it's a fantastic deal. Food may appear pricey but you get a hell of a lot for that $30. The back bar is really cool with all the animal heads and such. I'll be back next month.

Steven K.

Yelp
My wife is German and this is her favorite place when we are in town. We love the schnitzel and homemade desserts. Great service.
google avatar

Sandra D.

Yelp
What a great experience. From customer service to the food! We had Amy as our server and we thought she went above and beyond serving our food and drinks. The restaurant itself is absolutely gorgeous from the inside. It almost feels like you've traveled back in time to Medieval Germany. It's a beautiful restaurant with a lot of charm. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
This is the oldest restaurant in Indy and it is awesome. We went on a Friday night around 8 and had no wait. They also have an area with live music and a banquet hall. Our food was amazing and the service was awesome. When you walk in you feel like you are in Germany. We shared the jagerschnitzel . They let you split a meal for $11.50 and you each get 2 sides. That was plenty for both of us. For desert we had the bread pudding and it was very good also. This place is definitely worth trying
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
We were seated right away in Kellerbar. We were served with pretzels and our waiter did warn us about the spicy mustard. The pretzel was cold and hard. We didn't like the spicy mustard either. We ordered the French onion soup and it was flavorful and gooey with cheese. The pork tenderloin was average and the bun was okay. I did ask for the fries to be extra crispy and they delivered. Overall, we had a good time enjoying the atmosphere but the food was average.
google avatar

Danny G.

Yelp
Very nice German food and ambiance. Great Server. Made a reservation but was 20 minutes late, finding a parking space on a Friday evening
google avatar

Bruce W.

Yelp
Food choices had all the German staples and some Cajun choices thrown in there. I'm guessing the owner/cook is a Louisianna German‍. I ordered the French Onion Soup, Jaegerschnitzel, with Spaetzle and Potato Pancake. Waitress was friendly and made a few recommendations for those in my party not familiar with German cuisine. Ambiance was like an authentic German restaurant, looked like they had a fest hall on one side also. Good was good, a little pricey but good. We also got the appetizer and that was a mix of pretty good little snacks. Complimentary bread and pretzel basket came with some of the spiciest house made mustard ever. Cleared my sinuses and I made sure everyone else tried it and experienced that, haha.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
By far the best German Restaurant you'll find in Indianapolis. Food is wonderful, the service is always great, and the atmosphere is perfect. There IS usually a wedding reception in the ballroom that can get a little rowdy, especially if you are seated in the narrow area between the maître d' podium and the beer hall. But always a good time, and a fun experience.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
The atmosphere and decor this place is amazing, Wednesday through Saturdays this place host some of the best live local bands around from Rock to Rhythm and Blues. The meal begins with bread. The Big pretzel is a must-try. The mustard that comes with is no joke though. It's horseradish mustard and super spicy. I did not care for the Chocolate Stout, somethings just do not go to together, and chocolate beer is not for me, but you may wish to give it a try. I ordered the Cold Appetizer Sampler, a variety of sausages and cheese with the spicy mustard and imported cheese and old world bread is amazing. Anyone who is a fan of poppers must try the Cajun Chicken Poppers the Creole mayo is a culinary masterpiece in flavor. For those who prefer fish, the Atlantic Salmon fillet is a site to behold. For fantastic service and authentic German Cuisine this place is a landmark. Must try you will not be disappoint.

Yelp
Highly recommend this experience! We visited on a Sunday evening and it was delicious. The baked brie was the perfect amount to share between 5 people and the surprise baked pretzels (no picture) were piping hot. + The side salads came with fresh mushrooms and the ranch tasted homemade. Very delicious. +Portion sizes were huge, so we split meals and had food leftover. +The service was wonderful and they kept coming by to offer water refills and clear dishes. Our server was knowledgeable, kind, and very efficient despite it being quite busy. +The ambiance was nice, I appreciated the decorations. We were seated right by the entry, which I was concerned might detract from our experience but as we started eating, we didn't even notice. Bonus+ the tall beer was HUGE!

Jaime M.

Yelp
The staff was welcoming and so kind to our kids.. However this was not the German meal I was hoping for. The beer was tasty but wish the glass had been cold. Please do yourself a favor, skip this one if you are from out of town and only have a few meals in town. To start, the complimentary pretzel was average at best. The over the top spicy mustard was the highlight but the "cheese" sauce was reminiscent of warm, flavorless plastic. Then there's the entrées...it didn't get better. I opted for a light lunch, salad and spud. Much to my surprise the loaded potato came with the same "cheese sauce", one bite, immediately No. The croutons and the chunky blue cheese were the highlight. My kids favorite is a braut, they couldn't fight through more than a bite but the kettle chips weren't great! Finally, my German food loving husband got the traditional schnitzel. Came looking great, however about two bites in he turned green and ran to the bathroom to puke. Come to find out, it was raw! The saff was great, but skip this stop.
google avatar

JD B.

Yelp
If you like traditional German food, this is your place. Sausage and sauerkraut and beer. And then more sausage, sauerkraut and beer.
google avatar

Sarah F.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at the Rathskeller and it did not disappoint! We sat in the basement which was very cool and traditional, I loved checking out the stained glass windows, and different pictures. I had a tasty heffenwisen beer, that was very tasty and refreshing! I very much enjoyed it. We split a pretzel, with what I'll call Saint Elmo's mustard, so delicious! For my main course, I had the jagerschintzel, sour kraut, and spatzel, all of it was delicious and tasty. Very impressed and I'll be back!
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
In my twenties, I often visited the biergarten. Now I come for lunch. I still highly recommend the beer garden for the life music and fun patio. Probably the best patio in Indy. Today we came with a plan to share the Reuben and the Hot Wurst Platte. The wurst platte itself was more than enough for 2 people, but we can never resist a Reuben. I loved the different sausages, Sauer kraut, and the braised cabbage. I am likely to get this plate every time I visit. The Reuben was delicious and I loved the potato salad. I did not, however, like the spaetzle. It left much to be desired. The pretzel to start was not extraordinary, but the Dijon was. Holy horseradish hotness. If you have a cold, this is sure to help clear your sinuses. The dessert list looked delicious but we opted out as we had too much already. We had excellent service and I enjoyed the room we were seated in, just off to the left of the entrance. The wood, fireplace, bar, and decor gave the place a very traditional German feel. We love German food and will definitely return. I love the room in the back, towards the biergarten. It's very bright with natural sun coming through.

Yelp
Joined a friend for appetizers before a concert. Had the stuffed mushrooms two orders. Service was good and food was very good

Yelp
Great German food place! Very authentic, service was amazing. Felt like we were in a Christmas cottage.

Yelp
Spending the night in Indianapolis, and wanted a good, as in big and filling, dinner before another night in another hotel. Located downtown, it was a great GREAT find. Sunday evening and downtown was very busy. Having spent a couple of years living in Germany it was a taste treat. I Found it some of the best German food this side of the ocean. Also the space was amazing- and historic. Had the Hot App plate while my husband had the "pork chops". Both were wonderful and the beer selection simply divine! Great staff (working hard to keep up with customers) they seemed short staffed- like most places today. Definitely worth a visit!

Melanie Y.

Yelp
We had really great service and the food was delicious. The music could be a bit more fitting and that would make the ambience a bit more enjoyable :) but the things that matter most - the food and service - are wonderful!
google avatar

Connie M.

Yelp
They have a new menu and it is great. Still have our favorites, but they have added some new dishes. We have the calamari for an appetizer. Wonderful. Perfect amount of breading. My husband has the chicken Parmesan and he loved it. I had the fish and chips. There fish was perfect. Had a nice light batter not the real heavy kind a lot a places use. For dessert we shared the Black Forest cake. All in all the whole meal and our dark German beer were excellent and so was the service
google avatar

Holly R.

Yelp
We did not have reservations but were seated promptly and had very friendly service. Our waiter new the whole menu and could explain everything! Some people are out off my the dark ambience but that is a tradition German restaurant and I really enjoyed it. We ate I night main dining room, we did not have time to enjoy the bar or beer garden. The only reason I gave 4/5 stars was for the food. It was good but I had much higher hopes. I love German food and it's so hard to find it done well. They did many things well, like the jaegerschnitzel, but the spaetzle noodles were very bland. I would go back again and recommend everyone should try it.

Yelp
Got excited about trying this historical German Restaurant while visiting Indianapolis. The place is beautiful and so authentic! Had taken a look at the menu before getting there and since I love Reuben sandwiches that's what I got! Very good.?Did not like the side of Spaetzle, I have been to Germany and Austria a few times and I am pretty sure this was not it. Not sure what it was, closer to noodles than Spaetzle. Beer was good. Went at 2pm probably not the best time as the place was empty and employees were not so welcoming. I am always looking for customer service on top of good food. Based on the overall experience I struggle to give a 4. Might go back at a different time.

Yelp
We love the Rathskeller, we love it so much we decided that we will get married at their athanæum. We love bringing our out of town guests here to try their warm soft pretzels and the mustard to see if they can handle the heat! We also love enjoying their outdoor music garden the Biergarten and just listening to music with a drink and pretzel in hands Love the historical story of this building and what it does for the community, german food is not my favorite, but when the craving hits this is surely the place to go get them

Yelp
For the price not really worth it taste wise. Everything was ok but just ok. Started off with baked brie. Bri was barely warm inside. Needed more of the Chambord Syrup or Brown Sugar for more sweet. I liked the pretzel. I tasted just a smidge of it. Holy Crap it was hot. Other sauce we guessed was cheese but it was super thin. I got Oxtail Soup and Shrimp Scampi. Oxtail soup had a bad consistency. To be honest it was slimy. Maybe thats how Oxtail soup is. Shrimp Scampi was good. It had a surprising number of shrimp and an huge amount of pasta. The pasta could have served 4 people. Husband got the filet, baked potato, Caesar Salad and potato cake. You don't put onion, tomato and mushrooms on a Ceasar salad. That is just a salad. He thought the filet was ok. I thought it tasted pretty good. I've made potato cakes all my life and I liked theirs. It has been probably over a decade since we've been here. I think this mainly because I didn't have a yelp review already. I think they need to up date the menu. It seems to be stuck in the 70s.

Yelp
Delightful dining experience from start to finish! I was able to get our party of 9 a same day reservation on a Wednesday. The inside was still decorated for Christmas which added to the wonderful ambiance. They have a decent bourbon selection which made my husband and brother in law happy. They give you complimentary hot soft pretzels which was a wonderful surprise! We also started with the bratwurst sampler, pesto French bread and stuffed mushrooms. All were fabulous. Everyone seemed very happy with their meals. I got the schnitzel with creamed spinach and spaetzle noodles. What a delight!!! A great ending is that they treated my father in law to a birthday dessert with a candle and we all sang happy birthday! He shared some bites of the German chocolate cheesecake. Holy sweetness and deliciousness. We will definitely be back and will bring family & friends!

Yelp
We needed to find a location with short notice for a party of 7. Reservations were made on OpenTable. Service was good. I ordered a caesar salad with a side of sauerkraut to stay on track of a new years resolution. The rest of the party enjoyed appetizer combos of fried food and lots of dipping sauces as well as the sausage combo plate. It was decked out in holiday decor and was a really pretty environment to have dinner for a larger group.

Yelp
Our son's wedding was there. The turnover from service to reception was amazing. The food buffet was delicious. I'd book anything there

Yelp
Excellent choices for German food. I had the Jägerschnitzel and it was delicious. With your choice of soup or salad and two sides you won't leave hungry.

Yelp
First visit to this iconic Indy spot. The place is huge and I was told they had outside concerts in their backyard. We had a large group this evening. We shared the Brat 'n Kraut balls (ok) and the Hot Wurst Plate - this was pretty good but watch out for the spicy mustard, it will clear your nostrils! I had the Rouladen. It was a huge plate of food yet it was moderate quality and not especially flavorful. For sides I chose the German Potato salad (interesting and had some good flavors) and the spaetzle noodles (simply dumplings and not much taste save for the gravy they were topped with). Had some German beer on tap with all others being can/bottle. Overall, just an average experience.
