The Best Restaurants and Bars Near Joshua Tree National Park | Eater LA

"The Rib Co. sits poised on the Twentynine Palms Highway. This two-lane road serves as the main artery through the Joshua Tree area and begs desert travelers to pull over for some brisket. The staff serves baby back, St. Louis style, and Tennessee whiskey glazed ribs, to name a few. It’s an all-around meat fest with burgers, brisket sandwiches, and build-your-own plates served with a choice of meat, two side dishes, and corn muffins loaded with honey butter." - Matthew Kang

Had a late dinner here last night (20:30). It's a busy time of year with nearby Joshua Tree, so the wait was about 1 hour. The meat is cooked out front of the small restaurant over a bed of 🔥. We had the 10oz steak and baked potato, the rib sampler plate and a ceasar salad. We also sampled the baked beans, coleslaw and the cornbread muffins with honey bitter. Oh so good! A friendly staff who are in constant motion given the popularity of this family run restaurant.

Google
Loved the fried chicken and ribs, our sides were excellent as well. Cute little place to eat and great customer service!! Food was presentable and delicious! Place is kid friendly and staff was super sweet to my child.

Google
Got a table pretty fast and was excited for the food. Ordered onion rings($16), they were good but such a measly portion. The cornbread was pretty good with the honey butter. I ordered 3 sides ($6 each) but the portions were just disrespectfully small. The ribs that we got were insanely dry. You d expect a place named after ribs to have decent ribs. The steak was ordered medium but arrived rare, when we sent it back, they just put it back on the grill but didn’t cook it properly still. Still very pink and inconsistent. Such a disappointing experience for paying that amount of money.

Google
Food was great! When all the tables are taken (which almost was) it gets really noisy. Service was also great! We had the porterhouse steak and the salmon.

Google
Been here twice now for the rib sampler. I want to try other things on the menu but the ribs here are just so good. Service has been very friendly. Minimal seating, expect a wait time Friday/ Saturday night. A little on the pricier side but besides jt saloon it’s the only bbq spot in 29. Will be coming back !

Google
A friendly and authentic BBQ place that will not disappoint. I had the ribs and they literally fell off the bone. Sauce was perfect. Corn muffins amazing. Cole slaw done right. And our server was very friendly. I love the atmosphere. A gem in 29 Palms!

Google
Very excited for this meal- looked like it had great reviews. And the rib sampler plate was amazing!! Only thing is that our food to and hour and a half to arrive. It was a busy Monday but I think this might have something to do with the fact that the bbq is made to order rather than prepped ahead of time based on average customer volume. My advise to the owners- food is great!! Don’t change any of it- just start making the food in batches through the evening so that the ribs or meat can come out quicker in waves rather than one at a time. That works for flat top and steaks but BBQ should be ready pretty quick. Thanks so much for the great dinner!

Google
One of the best meals we had on this road trip! Highly recommend visiting if in Joshua Tree area. We had the steak and the ribs, both of which were barbecued to perfection and tasted smokey and delicious. Portions were huge and good value. Service was great too!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here after a long roadtrip and let me tell you BEST BBQ I HAVE EVER HAD IN CALIFORNIA!!! The service was absolutely amazing!!! They were so kind and attentive and we even got biscuits for free as we waited!! The ribs are TO DIE FOR so tender and brisket was so amazing. The food isn't even greasy , not even the fries. If you're looking for a good place to eat come here!!

Yelp
Amazing food and great staff. We saw this place when visiting Joshua Tree National Park and decided to stop in from dinner around 6:00. Apparently everyone else had the same idea because within 20 minutes of our arrival they had about another 10 tables come in. The staff dud an amazing job during this rush, you could tell they were obviously busy but it didn't affect how they were taking care of people. A unique thing about this place is that they grill all of there food outside in front of the building. This does create some smoke on the patio but that was a draw for us to sit outside. You can tell that they care about their food because everything we ordered and saw at other tables was freshly made, nothing was pre-prosesed from the corn muffins with honey butter,to the mac & cheese, and even the French fries were fresh cut potatoes. We had baby back and beef ribs, both were fall off the bone tender. The brisket was a little different but my wife loved it. If you are in the area you need to visit them!

Yelp
Delicious ribs and the staff is so nice!! Stopped by this place on our way home from Vegas. Ordered a rib plate. The staff was super nice, our order came out quickly and the food was delicious! the ribs were soft and perfect, we were so hungry and we appreciated the kind staff so much.

Yelp
The aroma is intoxicating! I love the smell of barbecue! We arrived right around opening and had our best meal in 29 Palms. The ribs were delicious! I ordered them original style with coleslaw and potato salad. (My tip for next time is to ask for additional bbq sauce, it was good!) my husband enjoyed the fried chicken and meatloaf. The little corn muffins that came with our meals were tasty too. Service was friendly, informative, and fast! This was my favorite full-service experience in the area during the trip.

Yelp
After a long day of hiking, our group of 6 was starving and was excited for some barbecue. Unfortunately, we had a pretty mid experience. The restaurant itself is pretty small. We put down our name and were told to wait in our car since there was no space to wait at the restaurant. They initially quoted a 30 min wait but changed it to "around 15 mins" when they saw our hesitation. The wait ended up being close to 45 mins. The food itself was also just ok. Especially since it took an additional 20-30 mins to arrive after ordering. Our biggest gripe overall was that the meat was overcooked and dry. Our group ordered some different ribs and chicken and we all thought our food was a little dry. The Mac n cheese side was a smaller portion than I expected. Lastly, we wished the cornbread was warmer (the butter didn't melt when we put it on). Would probably recommend stopping somewhere else for food if you're in the area.

Yelp
Was famished after a day of hiking and comet chasing in Joshua Tree and Rib Co totally hit the spot! The Triple Threat ribs were delicious and they have super yummy and comforting mac & cheese. Very chill, simple vibes with indoor and outdoor seating - and it's fun to watch the pit master at work on their huge outdoor grills! While the restaurant was very cozy and welcoming, I was exhausted so I got my food to go. I ordered the half rack Triple Threat plate which comes with their baby back ribs covered in their house rub (1), their BBQ sauce (2), AND their Tennessee whiskey glaze (3) for a triple explosion of flavor - it was fabulous and the ribs were cooked flawlessly. It also comes with coleslaw and BBQ beans which they let me sub for Mac & cheese no charge. Both sides were delicious. They also include a couple of corn muffins and honey butter and wooo were they good! And I got some of their homemade peach cobbler just for funsies - it was just ok but tbh I'm not a huge fan of peaches or peach cobbler so I think it's just my personal preference. The dough seemed a little undercooked but the flavor was pretty decent. Prices are pretty reasonable considering you're kind of out in the middle of nowhere by a national park. It took a while for my order but everything was fresh. There are a few tables inside with a TV on one of the walls playing sports - very unassuming and relaxed. There's also a large patio with more seating outside than in. I like that it's family owned - Service for the most part was friendly and helpful. One of the ladies helping with my order got kind of weird when I asked to sit at a small table to wait (they weren't very busy) - she didn't really seem to like that so I stood by the door but it's hard to stay out of the way - so they don't really have anywhere to hang out while you wait I guess? Made me a tad uncomfortable but no big deal. They have a large parking lot that's unpaved and rather bumpy so be careful going in and out - low clearance cars may struggle a bit. All in all a good experience - an excellent location just outside Joshua Tree - I'd definitely eat here again when visiting the area.

Yelp
We went in on a Sunday, quite hungry after hiking Joshua Tree National Park. My husband and I shared the rib sampler and the peach cobbler. Everything was so delicious! Cornbread muffins with yummy honey butter was served in the beginning. The beef ribs in the sampler were my favorite! The crumble in the peach cobbler was to die for! Service was super friendly and they have a huge parking lot. Will definitely return if in the area. 10/10

Yelp
We drove by, and I saw the smoke from the grills out front, and had to go back for dinner. Unfortunately, it wasn't as good as it looked. Everything was smothered in their bbq sauce which tasted too tomato sauce/ketchup like for my tastes. If you go, get dry with sauce on the side. The cornbread muffins were the highlight, served with delicious honey butter.

Yelp
The Ribs are incredible! Fall off the bone tender and so very flavorful! No fat on these ribs! Their bbq sauce is amazing too! Service is excellent, very kind staff. Ambiance is casual and there can be a wait because they get busy and seating is limited. I can't wait to get these ribs again! Best beef ribs I've ever had!Thank you!

Yelp
I just want to say this place is SO so so salty. The corn bread is dry. - Ribs Sampler 2.2/5 The ribs are on the saltier side. Everything was mediocre- the best rib was the Triple Threat. The slaw was underseasoned and the beans weren't that great. - Ribs Co Burger 1.9/5 Below average burger. Free parking in lot.

Yelp
Happened to find this spot on accident but glad we did! Great food, great prices, large portions and nice family atmosphere

Yelp
The owner was super nice in recommending me gluten free food! I ending up having baked beans and potato salad and didn't get sick. 10/10 would try again when in the desert

Yelp
Service was great at this BBQ find in 29 Palms. I'm a Memphis native and a girl who lived in Kansas City for a long time. I know good BBQ. Some of the food is above average and some not. The ribs were really salty and mostly tender to falling off the bone, but the meatier parts were bone dry. We had the Triple Threat with Mac and Cheese, Beans and Coleslaw. The beans taste like they just have their regular sauce added. They are very tangy. The Mac was great. The coleslaw is a nice bite. The cornbread muffins are very sweet. I would have loved regular butter instead of honey butter or regular cornbread and honey butter. All in all a good meal. The ambiance is not why you come here. Check them out.

Yelp
Fantastic.... Food Fall off the ribs ... had the sampler ... I couldn't eat it all.. Friendly fast service I will come back for sure...

Yelp
Great service and delicious ribs. My boyfriend got the sampler platter with every kind of rib and it was so huge I started laughing when it came out. He made big inroads into it though. I got a half rack of baby backs which were also generously portioned. Tender, fall off the bone, deliciousness.

Yelp
The word about town is that this is THE place to go in Twentynine Palms. While my snarky sense of humor thought "well that is a low bar to meet" after finally being able to get in changed my mind to "yep this place would stand up even in food cities. Would I say this might be my go to place if it were in Reno? Yes, most definitely. We got into town after making the looooooong drive down from Reno and thought - well, let's give it a try. We walked in, place was packed and the wait time for a table was 45 minutes, time for a take-out order - also 45 minutes. Wasn't going to happen. We came back to try our luck our last night in town. We walked in for an early dinner and got seated right away. So glad we made it. Service, food, and welcoming atmosphere hit the trifecta! We each ordered a half rack of ribs - Baby Back for me, and House Rub for my husband. Both were slap yo mama, falling off the bone yummy. I got mine with a double side of coleslaw. Jennifer checked on us and refilled drinks as needed. Tips on going - come early, or call ahead to get put on the waiting list, or call in a takeout order. Most of all be patient. They are a small establishment, food is cooked when ordered, it is VERY popular, and it is worth the wait when they are busy.
google avatar

Logan S.

Yelp
It's a very small restaurant so be prepared for a wait and it will get smoky inside. The baby back ribs were good but a little dry. The steak was very good and so were all the sides. I highly recommend the peach cobbler they make fresh daily.
google avatar

Foodie Y.

Yelp
Food was on point, highly recommend, worth the wait. Lots of parking. You get good portions for the price. Meat is juicy and tender. Your clothes may smell smoky after because the smoke from the fire pit can waft inside. Went back x2 when we were in the area, no regrets. The grill marks were beautiful. My house steak with mushroom sauce was better than some steaks I've had in steak houses in the big cities. Sauces for steaks it costs extra, you can get extra sauce for ribs too, but it's extra. Can get busy during peak times.

Yelp
We checked it out and it was decent. I like their nachos. I ordered the shrimp glazed and it was watery glaze. Their side Cesar salad was good. Ribs were a bit dry they only tasted good for me dipped in the watery bbq beans. Overall service was great and friendly. Cute clean restaurant.
google avatar

Jack K.

Yelp
Legit bbq and the staff are really nice. Dry rub ribs are the bomb. I've eaten here like 10 times. Always go back.
google avatar

Mallory D.

Yelp
Ordered food to go which took about 30-45 minutes. I got the half chicken which came with a side of mashed potatoes and broccoli. The chicken was juicy and had some bbq sauce. The potato nachos were good but kind of basic and overcooked. I didn't like the jalapeños as the smoked flavor was too much.

Yelp
Amazing food and service ! will not disappoint! We came in late and with a party of 7. The staff was more than accommodating and the food was fantastic. We ordered the fried chicken, a couple triple threat ribs , the Philly and the brisket sandwich (with onion rings inside, can't remember the name) along with Mac n cheese, baked beans ,coleslaw and fries. Everything was hot and tasted great the way it came. Only thing I can say is the cornbread was a little dry but it was the end of the night Place was clean and staff was friendly. All in all great experience. Will def be back. Thanks yall !

Yelp
I took the family out to Joshua tree for the first time and we wanted to stop and get a quick bite. Found this incredible family owned restaurant on the side of the road. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but with the massive grills and smokers they had I knew we were already on the right track. Everyone was so friendly and you could tell it was a local joint because everyone was talking to each other by name. I ordered the triple threat baby back ribs. I definitely had no idea what I was going to be up against in this man versus food challenge. My wife got the brisket sandwich and my daughter got the burger. My son got the fried chicken. Everybody was eating off of each other's plate it was so amazing. You can call me, Fred Flintstone because when this slab of ribs came out, I thought the table was going to tip over. They were the meatiest juiciest most amazing ribs I've ever had. Take a look at the pictures below. You can't go wrong with anything you order here. It's all homemade and You will feel right at home!!

Yelp
This was a house guests choice, as i had just moved into the area. We ate there for dinner the first night and lunch the next day. Dinner was amazing. That night the temperature dropped but the temperature inside was wonderful. Lunch was even better. We shared the rib/chicken combo meal both times and it filled both of us up to capacity both times. My friend is a chain restaurant manager and she is very VERY (think restaurant critic) and for her to WANT to go to a place twice in a row is-well let me just say we've been friends for 10 yrs and I think this was the first time I had ever had her request a place for a second meal especially so close together.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered a full rack of ribs on April 17, 2025, after a long workday, eager for a good meal. I've eaten here 5+ times before and always enjoyed the experience, but this time, the ribs were so dry they were nearly inedible. I informed the server, who apologized and said she'd notify the chef and manager, but no further action was taken. Additionally, it took 15 minutes for her to return to process my payment. The atmosphere remains the same--classic, unupdated BBQ joint, which is expected. I hope this place returns to its former quality.
google avatar

Luis L.

Yelp
Overall good barbecued meats, the sides are a little lacking in flavor so I mix in some meat and and I'm good.

Nancy E.

Yelp
This place is worth the wait, try to Arrive as soon as they open. The rib platters is the best of all worlds, if you love ribs, but over all everything was delicious. My favorite part, DESSERT. The Cheesecake is like no other one of a kind and most of all super delicious !
google avatar

George K.

Yelp
meh at best. Have eaten here several times for take out due to limited options in the area. Dont order the shrimp unless you want to fire up your stove to finish cooking them. Eating in wasn't that much better. Ordered a steak medium and it came out still eating grass in the pasture it was so raw. Sides are bland, especially their cornbread. Ribs are over cooked, under smoked and too much fat on them.
google avatar

Frank H.

Yelp
Visiting from LA and was excited to try this place based on the glowing reviews. There were a few negative reviews that I was wary of but assumed they were one off experienced. Unfortunately, my experience was consistent with the lower ratings. Ordered the full rack of triple threat ribs and whisky bbq chicken tenders. The flavor of the ribs were not balanced. They were overly salty and that overshadowed anything the sauce could have offered. They also could have used more time being smoked. The cook is fall off the bone if that is your preferred way to have ribs. The tenders were incredibly dry even when dipped in sauce/ranch and the breading tasted of oil. Service for the takeout order was pleasant.
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Don't let the older exterior fool you into thinking this place doesn't put the effort in. Just from walking by the grill out front, you'll smell that you're about to get some good food. The portions are large enough that even after a morning of hiking, none of us were able to finish a plate. The DFS sandwich was packed full of fillings, and the meat was almost impossible to pick up with a fork it was so tender. The potato salad was also pretty great.

Yelp
BBQ in California that can play ball with any bbq in the south. It's worth the drive to Twentynine Palms

Yelp
Good ribs, good mac, good sweet tea, good service. Couldn't ask for more after exploring Joshua Tree National Park!

Yelp
I had high hopes after this was recommended to me, but I was really disappointed. Me and my boyfriend came after a day in the park and were craving ribs. Service was lackluster and a little rude. We ordered for takeout because it was so crowded and cramped inside, so perhaps that was why. We got the ribs combo with a side of beans and mac and cheese. We were told it would take 40 minutes so we were expecting some really good fall of the bone ribs. But it took an hour, and when my boyfriend went to go inside after 40 minutes (which is the time they said it would be ready), they were rude to him. Food was mid. I've had a lot better ribs at Texas Roadhouse or Chilis for a fraction of the cost. Nothing was super memorable besides the disappointment we had when we opened the order and then tasted it. Mac and cheese was alright, but the BBQ beans were also lackluster. I would not come here again as the price is not worth the quality of the food, and the service we received was not great either. We luckily had ordered from Wing N It nearby as well because we were so hungry, and we enjoyed it much much more and it was cheaper too.

Yelp
A solid 4.5 stars! We drove past this spot and saw that it was packed with cars so we decided to come back for lunch the next day. We ordered the 5 rib sampler which comes with 1/4 rack (about 3-4 bones) of each type of rib (beef rib came with 2 bones), coleslaw, baked beans, and corn muffins. The total was about $45 and it was a TON of food. We're used to paying $45 for half that amount of food in San Diego so we were pleasantly surprised. The ribs were all cooked really well (though we would like them even more if they were slightly less tender) and the seasonings were all great. There was a fantastic char on them which really took things over the top. The triple threat was our favorite but everything else was delicious as well. Beans were tasty and if there was an end piece of rib that was too dry, a dunk into the baked beans solved the issue. At first, we thought the coleslaw was too plain, but when we ate the ribs, it was clear that we needed the fresh, crunchy, slightly seasoned coleslaw to balance things out. We ordered a side of fries as well. They came out thin cut and crisp. They did soften as we are them so maybe they could have done with 30 more seconds in the oil, but over all they tasted home and fresh! Service was friendly as well. We'll be back the next time we're in 29 Palms!

Marisol D.

Yelp
The food is not great, the service is poor. Over priced for the quality. Ribs are not tender and sauce is not good. Cornbread is alright.

Yelp
Very good food ! I recommend this place ! For the 5 sampler ribs for $42 but very worth the try!!!! Home made honey butter with muffin is bomb ! Highly recommend the Tennessee whiskey pork ribs very soft and juicy

Yelp
This is a little place but with really good food. The service is quick , they give you some delicious corn muffins with honey butter. Fresh out of the oven piping hot. The inside is rustic . Something you would expect from a good bbq place. We ordered a full rack of triple threat pork ribs. It came with coleslaw and baked beans. The Cole slaw was fresh and tasty. The bbq beans were excellent. Sweet and spicy. The ribs were fall of the bone good. Savory and a little sweet with a touch of heat. I like my ribs not as done with a little pull of the bone but nonetheless the ribs were very tasty. I 100% recommend this place and will be coming back for more.

Yelp
After a quick hike in Joshua Tree we stopped at this place after seeing the great reviews. We waited for 15 mins for a table and it took about 30 minutes for food to arrive; the waiter told us that for dinner it can take up to 1 hour for food to come out because of how busy they get, so be forewarned. The ribeye we ordered was OK, 3.5 out of 5. The cornbread was delicious and moist, 5 out of 5. The rib sampler was 2 out of 5. The dry rub and sauces were simply delicious, so I'll give them 4 out of 5 for flavor, but getting served dry ribs is just not acceptable for a place that specializes in ribs. You get 5 ribs in the sampler and the only one that came out moist was the triple threat. You can tell they reheat these on the drum and whomever was manning it this day, just kept them directly on the heat for far too long and sucked the juice out of my dear ribs.

Yelp
Had the mixed rib platter and it was amazing as well as beans and coleslaw. Great service. Casual ambiance. Perfect place to eat after camping at Joshua Tree or anytime!

Yelp
Food was cold Soda was hot and water down No ice Bummer for my first time at this place definitely my last Also waiter added there own tip

Yelp
Great bbq joint with amazing ribs and other choices too. Friendly staff, fantastic service and we will go again....maybe we can save room for peach cobbler

Yelp
We checked this place out during a Joshua tree trip and the bbq was great. Not sure if it's the long weekend or always this crazy but they told us it would be a 2 hour wait for a table and 45 minutes to get food. I do think the wait would have been shorter since people left bit it was pretty busy. We ordered to go and brought it back to the Airbnb but still had to wait 45 minutes as quoted. They cook everything to order. Although the ribeye was tasty it was medium to medium instead of medium rare. We weren't sure if it overheated in the takeout container but they did cut holes in it to vent. Triple threat ribs were delicious, although one half rack seemed more tender than the other half. We also got the peach cobbler which was good but nothing special. Maybe it would have been better fresh since we reheated it in the oven? I think it was premade and refrigerated either way. So the bbq was solid but definitely think it would have been better to eat there.

Yelp
We decided to go see the stars at Joshua Tree and needed to get a bite to eat in town. We were gonna stop off at a Mexican restaurant but there was no indoor seating. Drove by The Rib Co and could smell the cooker outside so we decided try it out. Forty minutes to get a table and 45 minutes for the food to arrive. Since we had time to kill we didn't mind the wait. Sat in our car and sure enough 40 minutes later they called to tell us our table was ready. We ordered a house salad (cuz we needed to have some veggies) and the rib sampler so we could try a bit of everything. The honey butter was nice and melty when you spread it on the hot cornbread muffins. The ribs came nice and hot and yes, they were melt in your mouth tender and the char was great. Not too much so that it seemed burnt but enough for a good smokey flavor. Hubs was impressed that he didn't need to add extra sauce cuz it was seasoned and smoked just right. My go to rib is beef ribs and it was awesome. Honestly even though they told me which rib was which, I can't tell you which ones there were, they were all tender. If I was a local, I would ask again for the run down but since I don't know when I'll be back, it didn't matter. I think you have to wait 45 minutes for the food because everything is cooked to order so it takes that long to smoke the ribs I'm guessing. That way they don't run out of ribs since they wait until you order it. Needless to say, we had leftovers and to our pleasant surprise the meat was still tender after microwaving it. We would DEFINITELY come back if we were in the area. We used to say our favorite rib place was in San Diego but now this is the go to spot. Too bad we're hardly ever here!

Yelp
When searching for a dinner spot on the first night of vacation, I came across this place. It looks like this is the spot to be for some good bbq food and then some. We got the French dip and then an awesome brisket sandwich with onion rings involved. Yum! Both sandwiches were tasty and hit the spot. If I were to choose between the two, I would recommend the brisket sandwich. I'm a huge fry person and I have to say these were too thin for me, but I made them work. We also got a side of Mac n cheese as well, because that's a must. The max was cheesy and also had a flavor of a pizza cheese blend, I couldn't figure it out. It was yummy and definitely left me wanting more. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area, the food is a knock out.

Yelp
Delicious! We shared the Rib Sampler which gives you 1/4 rack of each of their 5 flavors. It was a LOT of food for just two. We had leftovers. We liked the Babybacks and House Rub ribs the best. The sampler comes with two sides and cornbread. We got the baked beans and potato salad. My daughter LOVED the cornbread. They also have a decent wine selection. The service was great even though we walked in 20 minutes before closing. They have inside seating as well as a cute patio for outside dining. The Rib Co. is a definite must when staying in or passing through Twentynine Palms!

Yelp
Food was good, the waitress was awesome! When we first arrived a guy at the register was a jerk. We were going to leave but a table became available

Yelp
Jennifer was an amazing server! Very friendly and helpful! The food itself was delicious as well. Had a combo with bbq chicken and brisket with mashed potatoes! Jalapeño appetizers are to die for! Cute little place with great service and food overall! Will come back when in town for sure
