My goodness, this place is fancy.
Okay, y'all. You see where I'm staying, so you have to know this was a work-related trip, right? Right.
That being said, I enjoyed the heck out of being here. Everybody - doorman, front desk, room service, housekeeping - was friendly and helpful (though there's a housekeeping thing I'll get to in a little bit).
It was a long flight from San Diego to Baltimore airport, and then another long ride from Baltimore airport into DC. I was tired, my legs and back felt tight, and I was starving. In short, I wasn't in the best of moods when my taxi pulled up to the hotel, but then I was greeted by one of the doormen, who welcomed me with a smile and an offer to take my luggage, and I felt my mood lighten.
The front desk agent was similarly friendly and gracious, and to that point, nobody even raised an eye at my traveling outfit - jeans, tank top and flip flops. I know it's probably not a big deal, but I always feel overly-self-conscious when I walk into a fancy establishment.
At any rate, the check-in process was quick and easy, and before I knew it, I had my key and was on my way to my room (top floor, even more fancy!)
I stepped off the elevator, turned to the correct hallway, and had to suppress hysterical giggling. There, on the wall in front of me, was a plaque that read "Penthouse 3", with an arrow pointing in the direction of my room. Of course, that wasn't MY room, but I've never been on a high enough floor to be anywhere near a penthouse suite before, so this tickled my fancy.
I'm a bumpkin sometimes, ain't I?
The room itself was big, airy and fantastic. The bathroom had a soaking tub (which I sadly never got a chance to use), a separate water closet and a shower stall (with great water pressure, the only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't adjust where the shower head was pointing, and it was kind of cramped in there, so there was no "safe zone", where the water wouldn't get to you).
I had a desk, which I quickly put to use, and the bed was large, comfortable, and full of the overly-soft pillows that so many hotels seem to love using these days. I can't complain about the bed, though. I was alone in an unfamiliar city, with a stressful week ahead of me, but that bed made me forget all about everything.
So, my two knocks against. The first is that the deadbolt lock on the door didn't work. I always use all the locks that are provided when traveling - alone, with people, doesn't matter. But when I turned the knob on the door's deadbolt, nothing happened. Nothing moved, certainly nothing clicked into place; it just plain wasn't working. I let them know about it at the front desk when I checked out, but I can't say for certain if that was addressed. I'm just glad they offered the chain as an added bit of security, as well.
The second thing is that the shampoo and conditioner were never replaced during my time there, and you bet I used them up quick. I have a lot of hair, what can I say? This was one time that I didn't travel with my own shampoo and conditioner, so I needed to take advantage of the little bottles that the hotel provides, but after day one, when the bottles were mostly empty, they were not refilled. I stepped into the shower after a hard and hot 4 mile run (seriously, it was an unseasonably cool day by DC standards, but this San Diego girl was suffering under that humidity blanket!) only to find that there was a bare squeezing of shampoo and conditioner left in the bottles.
Other than that, though, I did enjoy my stay. The one night I had to order room service (and by "had to", I mean that it was already late and dark outside, and I had no desire to roam the streets of DC by myself), everybody was accommodating and nice. Sure, it was the most expensive burger I've ever ordered, but it was filling and delicious, and came straight to my room, so...
The hotel was perfectly located for my needs. It's just a few blocks from our DC office, and I was able to run from the front door down to the Reflecting Pool easily enough. I didn't get a chance to try the restaurant, lounge or onsite gym (Equinox) this time around, but maybe on one of my subsequent visits...
