I had first discovered The Shop during my last trip to Portland three years ago, and was so impressed with its offerings that I made it my intention to return. Since we were in the area checking out some breweries and businesses along Washington Ave, we thought it was the perfect space to stop in for lunch, so of we went.
The Shop is run by Island Creek Oysters - and in addition to being a raw bar, they're also a shellfish market; I also noticed a walk-up window on the side of the building that serves hot dogs. There's a decent amount of space both inside and outside to sit, and the aesthetics are super open with large windows to bring in natural light and a cool color scheme. Inside, the raw bar itself serves as a focal point where you can see the staff prepare dishes.
Once we were seated, we were given an order card that contained all the menu items - we were instructed to mark what we wanted and how many, then bring it up to the counter to pay. While oysters are the main star, they also have a good selection of canned fish (some which they can themselves), a few apps, and other dishes. We decided to order a few things - the trout spread, chip + dip, crab roll, canned mussels, and some oysters. I also decided to get the boozy pink lemonade because vacation.
Everything was great - so fresh and beautifully arranged on a platter; there were plenty of crackers, toasts, chips, and complements to go with the mussels and dips. The arrangement really wowed me, above the fact that it was delicious. The crab roll was probably the weakest thing we ordered, but it still wasn't awful. My drink was quite refreshing and perfect for the humid day we were having.
Service was great - we were taken care of promptly and our food came out at a good pace. Overall, I can't speak any higher of The Shop - the seafood is fresh, and it's definitely worth a visit.
