The #MeToo Movement in Restaurants, Five Years In: What’s Changed, What Hasn’t | Eater

"A Friedman-owned restaurant where the author reports being assaulted by restaurateur Ken Friedman and which was depicted in a New York Times investigation (published December 12, 2017) as having a permissive culture toward harassment and abuse. Friedman later acknowledged that his behavior could be abrasive, rude and wrong. The State of New York settled a civil suit against Friedman and the establishment in January 2020; the author and ten fellow claimants accepted an average settlement of roughly $20,000 per person plus a profit-sharing arrangement, and the restaurant closed permanently about 20 days after the settlement. The author subsequently tried to negotiate taking over the lease to transform the space into an integrity-driven, worker- and women-centered enterprise that would honor promised reparations, but those plans were derailed by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic." - Trish Nelson

A Timeline of Events at the Spotted Pig Post #MeToo | Eater

"Once a highly influential West Village gastropub credited with popularizing the gastropub movement since its 2004 opening, this long-running restaurant closed permanently in late January 2020 after more than 15 years. Its demise followed public allegations of serial sexual harassment by the owner, a state civil investigation, and a settlement in which he agreed to pay $240,000 and a portion of future profits to 11 former employees; the business also struggled financially, with the owner saying it had been “running in the red” and that attempts to raise funds or sell the operation failed. High-profile attempts to change ownership and culture — including a proposed takeover by two well-known chefs that collapsed amid ethical concerns and disputes over control — never materialized. The scandal and its fallout, including the dissolution of the owner’s business partnership with the restaurant’s longtime chef, damaged the restaurant’s reputation, led many patrons to avoid it, and ultimately left dozens of staff unemployed as discussions began about potential buyers among former employees and other chefs." - Monica Burton

Where Do Mario Batali and Other #MeToo-Accused Chefs Stand in 2020? | Eater

"This high-profile restaurant became shorthand for the industry’s reckoning after its co-owner faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct; the owner’s tentative talk of stepping away so the business could survive was treated as major news, and he continued to profit from the operation even as scrutiny mounted. The controversy around the establishment underscored how allegations can shape a restaurant’s reputation and public conversation, with staff and observers framing leadership behavior as central to the venue’s toxic culture." - Monica Burton

#MeToo Restaurant Boycotts: How to Help Workers Losing Tips | Eater

"Allegations of sexual misconduct against ownership have left longtime front-of-house staff feeling betrayed; many were career servers who built schedules, relationships with regulars, and financial stability around the restaurant. Because pay relies heavily on tips and seniority, boycotts intended to punish ownership can instead harm employees' pocketbooks or push them into less-lucrative work. Its owner is reportedly still profiting from sales, intensifying calls for other operators and organizations to actively hire affected staff, avoid biased hiring judgments, provide meaningful harassment training, and offer job-placement or financial support during transitions." - Ashley Goldsmith

The Restaurant Industry’s #MeToo Moment Still Hasn’t Gone Far Enough | Eater

"The group's flagship remains under the accused owner’s control, who retained the business and continues to profit from its famous burgers; employees have alleged that a space in the restaurant was referred to as "the rape room," a state investigation was opened in August, and a proposed ownership deal with two prominent chefs collapsed after they insisted on being the actual owners and final decision makers for day-to-day operations." - Erin DeJesus
