I visited The Spread Eagle pub today and had a mixed experience. The staff were friendly upon arrival, and as a dog lover, I appreciated that the pub welcomed dogs. It's handy to know for future visits.
However, the food options were quite limited for both adults and children. We decided to order what we thought was Beef Wellington, clearly asking the waiter for it when placing our orders. There wasn’t much to choose from for kids either, so we inquired about a possible burger and chips option. This was abruptly declined, as it’s only available Monday to Friday, leaving us with overpriced sides at £5.50 each as our only alternative.
Later, I asked another staff member about this, who said they would check with the manager. It turned out that the person who took our order was actually the manager, which made the lack of flexibility and accommodation even more surprising. There was also no correction when we referred to the meal as Beef Wellington, which we later discovered was actually a vegan “Beet Wellington.”
When the food arrived, the server mentioned that it wasn’t Beef Wellington, but “Beet Wellington,” which confused us. The food was placed on the table, but one of us went to check the menu to confirm. Given the time of day, it was too late to leave and find another pub offering a Sunday roast.
Despite the confusion and the fact that most of the meals were left unfinished, none of the staff asked if everything was okay during or after the meal. When we paid, a staff member even tried to keep the receipt, which had the manager's name on it.
Overall, the experience was disappointing, especially with the lack of customer care and the misunderstanding around the meal.
Disappointing overall.
