The Best Burgers in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (closed Monday) It’s drive-thru only at this mom-and-pop burger shop, where the beef is ground in-house, the fries are hand-cut, and the milkshakes are hand-spun. There are just five burgers on the line-up, most topped with two or three straightforward ingredients as well as the usual lettuce, tomato, and onion fixings. The Stand’s basic burger is called the Standard, and it certainly sets one for excellence. The only oddball (and it isn’t that odd) is the Big Kahuna, topped with thick-cut bacon, grilled and nicely charred pineapple slices, and a thin, spicy honey lava sauce that adds heat and balance. Don’t miss the shakes (the chocolate-chile is fantastic) to wash it all down. Hot tip: Pair your single or double with a salted dulce de leche shake and eat it curbside like it’s 1962." - McConnell Quinn

The 23 Best Restaurants In Phoenix 2024

"Phoenix isn’t exactly the most walkable city, but we’re working on it. One silver lining to the city’s car culture is The Stand Burger Shoppe, a drive-thru-only mom-and-pop burger stand. The busy streetside hamburger joint keeps it simple with a lineup of ground beef burgers and salty hand-cut fries. Pick from a list of milkshakes and lemonades to wash it all down—the chocolate chile is our shake of choice." - lauren topor

Google
This was a swell burger place. High quality food with reasonable prices I'd say. Burger was definitely great and I love how they had the option to substitute a gluten free bun, not many places do that. The fries were not my favorite, not bad but not exceptional. Flavor was alright at best and they were mostly cut extremely small. They kinda were similar to the size and shape of In n Out Burger fries but tasted distinctly different. Their signature sauce was pretty good but not my favorite either. Despite this I would come back for the burgers and maybe skip the fries next time. Also this is a drive through only restaurant so doing try to park and go inside

Google
The burger was good id say a 3.5/5 the fries were great the sauce was the winner of the whole thing it the burger tasted very similar to in and out just slightly different with the added pineapple and bacon

Google
I'll start off by saying the staff provided 5-star service—friendly and attentive. The food? Subpar. The burger was okay, but the fries? Absolutely terrible. I would never order them again. Soggy, no crisp, no bite—you’re basically paying $5 for a pile of limp fries. As for the burger, it was decent, but not somewhere I’d go if I were craving one. Toast the buns, please. The lettuce was still wet from being washed, which made the whole thing feel off. For $9, I’d rather go to Wendy’s or Carl’s Jr. Spending $20 on this was disappointing—I wouldn’t pay more than $14 for everything. This was my first and last visit—no repeat service from me.

Google
I thought the burgers were definitely worth the trip and money. The sauce on the Hawaiian one was amazing! I do not think the fries or shakes are worth the cost and would recommend grabbing those options else where.

Google
First time stopping by today. I always drive by and always see the stand, always wounder how the food is. So today, i decided to stop by. (03-22-25) Boy, was i impressed by how fresh the burgers are. I got The Big Kahuna & A Standard for the lady. We both enjoyed our burgers, very fresh, and we'll worth it. Oh, I almost forgot to mention how well the pineapple, with the lava sauce on the Big Kahuna goes together. Would definitely stop by here again. Great job, guys. Great food. Awesome experience.

Google
Very mid. In-n-out & shake shack are way better. The fries were good, but tasted like they were cooked in old oil.

Google
The strawberry milkshake brought my taste buds back to the Dairy Women's shake shop in Oregon at the Salem Fair when I was a kid. The fries were cold but amazing, can't wait to try them hot! And the burger was spot on. Can't wait to be in the area again for another round.

Google
I had a great experience at The Stand in Arcadia! The burger was really good—juicy and flavorful, though I felt it could have used just a touch more seasoning to really make it pop. The fresh-cut fries were crispy and had that perfect homemade vibe, which I loved. But the standout (pun intended) for me was the spicy milkshake—it was absolutely amazing! The mix of creamy sweetness with just the right kick of spice was something I’ll definitely come back for. Overall, a solid spot for a casual bite with a little flair. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The burgers, Fries and Shakes are all amazing!!! They are worth any wait in the line!!

Yelp
The strawberry shake was really good! The Arcadia burger and fries were okay. I did not care for their sauces, they were meh. My total for one burger, one fry, and a shake was $23. It is drive thru only. I came here on a Tuesday at 6:40 pm and did not get my food until 7:18 pm. Overall, I'd come back if there was no line and it would just be for the shake.

Yelp
Swung by the drive thru on a Thursday around noon. Not too busy. Just a few cars ahead of us. Menu was simple, but deciding on a burger was not. Ended up ordering a couple of the Standards with fries of course. Paid at the window and quickly got our order! Smelled so good that we had to pull over into an empty lot to chow down lol. Veggies were crisp and buns were nice and soft. Patties were decent and covered nicely in cheese. Very good burger! Fries were good as well. Would recommend and of course return when in the area.

Yelp
Extremely impressed with the food and service. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and it did not disappoint. I got the standard with cheese, a side of fries, peach lemonade, and a banana dulce de leche shake. All of the food is good, a bit pricey but it tastes very fresh and homemade. The shake was amazing and the peach lemonade tasted like candy. The people running the drive thru were very friendly and the food didn't take too long.

Yelp
Greasy tasteless fries, sloppy mediocre burgers were disappointing for our first and last visit. Here is a tip... if you are charging $45 for 3 burgers, 1 fry and 2 drinks AND for take out ONLY, offer your customers more than 1 napkin per customer!
google avatar

Yelp
A bit on the pricier side, but the burgers are excellent and the milkshakes especially delicious! Drive through only - and the milkshake was so good that I drank most of it before I was able to snap a picture. The burger is extremely well seasoned - it's so flavorful and juicy that you don't even need to add ketchup or any additional sauce (beyond what they provided). The ingredients also tasted very fresh. The special sauce that they have for the fries is excellent - it had a very solid spice without being overwhelming. The shake, however, is the real star. We got the salted dulce de leche and it was truly incredible: you get the incredible caramel goodness mixed perfectly with the texture so as not to be overwhelming. I'd highly recommend for this shake alone. The drive through itself was also very easy: there were two lanes and we got our food very quickly. The also accept contactless, which is always appreciated!

Yelp
I love this place. It really never disappoints and it's so quick, delicious, and good quality. The burgers always tastes fresh to us and are a generous size. Sometimes we like to set up a little movie on a phone and pretend we are at the drive ins while we eat LOL. Service is super quick and the line usually move fast. They are super accommodating with requests. Burgers coke with the standard LTO, but make sure you ask for cheese if you want it! Highly recommend a shake because why not! The fries are good but I think if they put a seasoning, like cajun, they would be perfect! This place is definitely a vibe and the prices are really fair. I think the most expensive burger was like 10$. We got 2 burgers, fries, 2 drinks and a shake for 38$. That's a steal.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful burger! 1st time here and used the drive thru and surprised how fresh everything tasted. Lemonade was just refreshing on a warm day and hit the spot. Hand cut French Fries were a little soggy for my taste and could have used some more salt. All in all we really enjoyed our lunch today.

Yelp
I recently checked out this local burger joint, eager to support a neighborhood gem and hear what the buzz has been all about in Arcadia. Staff were there to do their job and were quick, but the burger itself was a bit of a letdown. It was okay, but for the price, I expected a bit more pizzazz. For a less than what we paid here (3 burgers, fries, and a drink $50) , you could be indulging in the reliably tasty options at In-N-Out or Ingo's, which offer better value and flavor. I'm all for backing local spots, but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. Hopefully, they can tweak things and live up to their potential!

Yelp
Hit the stand. It was drive-thru only At this time, not sure if it opens up to sit. We got two Standard burgers, fries, and a milkshake. The burgers were pretty good quality and the ingredients were very fresh. We liked those a lot. The fries are really good and quality, the fry sauce is good but had a lot of spice to it and wasn't as creamy/aioli as you may expect. The milkshake was a banger! I got chocolate! Thing was super good! 10/10! Overall it's a solid place for burgers and the price is very reasonable at this location! Check it out!

Valissa W.

Yelp
Best fries in town, hands down! I'm normally an onion rings fan. No inion rings offered( such a shame!). So I took a chance with the fries... Love them!! Fresh, crisp and wonderfully seasoned. They offer a "Stand sauce" but they are so good I needed no sauce at all. That's saying something since I'm considered "Saucy Girl". I love the Stand Burger without pickles( I don't like them or mustard in my burgers, it's a personal choice) it's a double burger. It's good but inconsistent. Sometimes I've loved it sometimes meh so improvement on that would help and it'd be nice if they offered a burger with a single meat patty bc I can't eat a whole one, not everyone can or want 2 meat patties!
google avatar

Natasha A.

Yelp
The Chocolate Chile mikshake, Strawberry milkshake and their fries were great! Their Standard burger, and Arcadia burger were good. We enjoyed the grilled jalapeno and pineapple add ons, these are a must.
google avatar

Jessa K.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this gem for a while now! I tried the standard on a GF bun w/o tomatoes or onions, add cheese. I also got a side of fries and a chocolate shake. The meal was over $22 so quite expensive but it did taste fresh. The fries reminded me of five guys and the shake was very thick (which I love). The burger came with two patties so make sure to come with an appetite! Nice treat but not my first choice for a fast joint burger

Yelp
This place looks quick and easily. When you turn into the drive thru there are two lanes you pick which ever one is shorter to not to block the street and through traffic. It's seems like it will be a long week but it was quick. When you get to the window they read of your order. You could order on the phone if your order is over $65 which is easy to do if you are a family of 3 or 4. The basic burger is $7.99 then to add grilled onions and or bacon the burger is 8.99 or 9.99. We ordered the whole menu practically. Fresh Cut French, The Standard Burger, Grand Royals, chocolate milkshake, and the salted dulce de leche milkshake. The salted dulce le leche has salt chunks it which threw me off but it is still really good! The fries were okay with decent seasoning. I was not a fan of the sauce that comes with the French fries. I would recommend eating in the parking lot so you food is not cold by the time you get home. The burger was good and had good flavors. It was a good classic burger.

Yelp
Julian and Jackie. Excellent service and thank you for Keeping Stand Great always. Please relay to your owners that you guys like tips $ to. And hey, it's not taxed. I understand you have a tip cash pot but you also need digital.

Yelp
This was a great quick dinner! We pulled right into the drive thru and had our order taken quickly by a friendly employee. We didn't wait more than 5 minutes for our food We ordered a Standard burger, side of fries and a strawberry shake. The strawberry shake had real strawberry purée (I assume) as it wasn't just flavored strawberry ice cream. It was refreshing and good. The fries were seasoned perfect and the standard burger was made perfectly and had enough fixings and fresh veggies. It was a really good simple burger. Would definitely stop through for a quick meal again!
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
I thought the food was good, extremely fresh ingredients and I love the special sauce. Fries were seasoned to perfection. I love that they made it fresh and the food was still served quickly.

LaRae L.

Yelp
I had the mocha shake and it was amazing. I don't know if it was chocolate pieces and or coffee beans in it but it gave it a little crunch and was soooo good. A little pricey

John H.

Yelp
First time customer and tried the evil burger along with the chocolate Chile shake. Twenty bucks with light tip. Burger patties like you get at In And Out with the the evil sauce and grilled jalapeno. Not impressed with the burger....but the shake is a 5 star winner. I'll go back to try the standard burger and another shake next time.
google avatar

Yelp
This little small place definitely packs some serious punch!! This was my celebration victory meal after completing the half marathon in Tempe, and boy, did I feel great after tackling this delicious burger. Fries were super seasoned, cripsy, and hot. So hot that the roof of your mouth will be begging you to stop shoveling these fries down. The burger was indeed the star, I loved how the grilled onions tasted, and the stand sauce was a nice touch added to the burger. Buns were nicely toasted, slightly butter, and bacon was extra crispy. I like everything wasn't so greasy or falling apart as you took each bite. Thank you for this memorable experience as I will return again.

Daniel A.

Yelp
The good. Presentation Freshness Shakes The bad. Pricey af! (1 Burger, fries, and a shake =22-25$) Bland flavorless patties. Food gets soggy at at exponential rate(eat it quickly) Overall verdict. I hate spending my money here because I can get a gourmet burger from an actual restaurant that's much better for the same price. But my wife loves it, especially for the presentation and consistency. 3.5/5
google avatar

Vicky M.

Yelp
Stopped by after a game of pickleball. We were a bit hungry. The look of our burgers before we bit into them - beautiful I've got to say these burgers looked very good in person!! The first bite was heaven. Excellent quality of beef! All the topping was just perfect! One of the best burgers I've had so far! This one it's the Tops!! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
Evil burger is a good concept. I enjoyed the toppings and the sauce was really great. But the burgers themselves were a bit dry. Fries were good, and I enjoyed the dipping sauce. Maybe I'll try again some time.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Cute little place. Burgers are good. I live in Peoria. I wouldn't drive there on purpose. If I'm in the area, then yes I'll stop by again.
google avatar

Denise O.

Yelp
I went to this place yesterday, based on the good reviews, they must all be made up. Went to the window paid and the girl said two or three times we're preparing your order (I couldn't figure out why she kept saying that )I'm like OK I don't know what's the deal with her telling me that probably because they weren't even cooking the burger. They were busy putting old burger together on a bun, the hamburger wasn't even hot. It wasn't fresh And juicy like the reviews indicate. Stay away from here!!!!What's the point If I wanted dry ass cold hamburger I would've went to McDonald's The review say it takes 10 minutes to receive a burger. I received mine in two minutes. If even that long that can tell you they don't cook the burger when you order it. Oh, almost forgot about the effed up fries look at this crap would you eat this? they were cold also probably from yesterday.
google avatar

Kerrigan Y.

Yelp
A really great burger spot near my airport hotel. I make it a point to avoid chain restaurants during my travels, and we really enjoyed this local spot. I would come back for their "stand sauce" and dolce de leche shake alone. Their shakes are AMAZING.
google avatar

Morgan T.

Yelp
Simply the best. I ordered the Grand Royal burger on a gluten free bun and ohhhh myyyy goshhhhh! That gluten free bun was actually big enough to cover the entire patty, was so fluffy & did not fall apart at all. The entire burger was amazing & I can't wait to go back! It wasn't too messy either. Drive thru only, but there are plenty of parking spots in the lot right next to the drive thru to park and eat. Fries were decent too but nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Skyler P.

Yelp
This has now been added to my go to burger rotation. A friend had told me about this place and I was shocked I'd never heard of it. This is a drive thru only burger shop located in Arcadia. Be prepared to wait (I spent about 15 min in line) but it's well worth it! Everything is made to order and delicious. I'm a milkshake lover and this milkshake was one of the best I've had. Burger was seasoned well and all the toppings were generously piled on. If you've never been, definitely worth a visit!

Emily M.

Yelp
Food is fresh, quality shakes, service is friendly. Be aware all burgers come w the standard plus the toppings listed for the burger
google avatar

Tia T.

Yelp
Ok there is a reason why everybody talks about this burger place! It's so goooddd! It's drive thru only, sad, and closed Monday and Tuesday. The line wasn't super long on Sunday after 4pm. I got the classic burger called "the standard", side of fries, and the pumpkin shake! Just wow. The burger is so juicy and delicious, 2 Pattie's, add cheese. I couldn't finish it all. The fries were fresh but the shake! Wow the perfect amount is cinnamon spice and seemed like a drizzle of caramel down the side. What a great stop. I wish there were seats outside to stop and eat instead of taking it home but was still fresh and filling.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
Since moving to AZ this has been 1 of many hidden gems we found & are we so happy we did. First off the customer service is always on point!! Super nice very helpful with any questions we have! Food: our go to is the pineapple burger forgot what it was called. But definitely worth a try. My husband who absolutely hates pineapples orders this burger. Fries are so good! They definitely pack you enough to share. The absolute best thing about this place is the SHAKE!! The banana stand is on POINT!!! I don't care how much it cost! It's literally banana cream pie in a cup!! So good. If they can add some graham cracker to the bottom of it Omgosh. I would be FOOD COMA HEAVEN. Anywho we drive all the way from buckeye for this Burger Joint. It's that good! If you guys can open one in Verrado! I would really appreciate it!
google avatar

Alex V.

Yelp
Best burger stand in Arizona. Too bad they don't offer sit down service anymore. This location used to be a vegetable stand 70 years ago. Glad they kept the name, the Stand.
google avatar

Alan R.

Yelp
One and done here, zero flavor and dry burger patty. The bun however wasn't dry, the ranch and grease completely soaked it up, maybe they should toast the bun. 16$ for a "burger" and fries is laughable. Should have read the reviews closer, apparently someone got a cockroach in their fries yesterday, couldn't even finish it.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
I was finally able to stop by here and try some food and have to say I wasn't disappointed, As of right now it is drive thru only so we ended up ordering the Big Kahuna which was a really good burger nice fresh ingredients with just a small kick of heat with pineapple pickles onions lettuce and some amazing thick cut bacon as well as I believe there special sauce. The other burger we tried was the Evil Standard which was a double cheeseburger with jalapeños and I was told this burger was excellent as well . These are some big burgers that have amazing flavor and are just great quality and made with perfection . Now off to the French fries which are handcut and definitely good fries and come with there special sauce which is very good in the fries, My only complaint on the fries is they were all so small which made it hard to dip into the sauce but maybe I just got a lot from the bottom or something but still really good and you can tell there made to order with how hot they get to you . I will definitely be back here to try another burger .
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Overall it's a pretty classic burger. I do love the buns they use and always taste very fresh and high quality. I'm a big fry fan and do love that they have the chunky fries. They have a drive-thru which is super convenient and always amazing service.
google avatar

Nikole G.

Yelp
Came here right before I went to the airport. I saw all of the reviews about the burgers and so forth. Decent burger. I totally agree with the other complaints about the vehicle lines to order- not very well thought out. Try to keep a cool head and not get too territorial- some people just don't pay attention to what's going on around them, and common sense isn't common anymore. Burgers and fries are good. Shakes are expensive, so I ended up not getting one.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
I recently went to The Stand while my son was in town from overseas. We use to go there pre pandemic; a kind of father son occasion. Then the pandemic. So it'd been awhile. Suffice it to say it was a delicious bit of nostalgia. He usually got the banana shake- which is EPIC! Doubled up on the fries, because who's gonna miss out on THEIR fries, which are easily as good as Five Guys! It's a bummer that it's exclusively a drive thru, but it got the job done, plus we were sneaking fries all the way home. I can't remember a bad burger EVER from The Stand. Dad approved. Airman approved. Glad you guys made it!! See ya soon!!!
google avatar

Isaiah R.

Yelp
This burger dad has me in a chokehold. I probably go here once a month and I get the Arcadia burger because I like to keep it simple. Will let me tell you that Arcadia burger is far from simple is such a delicious homemade tasting burger.
google avatar

Marisol V.

Yelp
Drove 45 min, YouTube videos show people eating inside. Once we got there, it's only a drive thru. We didn't want to eat inside the car. They should have put maybe picnic tables outside at least for people who don't live nearby. The place was empty no cars in the line, their shakes looked temping but we went to a nearby restaurant instead to sit down and relax.
google avatar

Anoop M.

Yelp
This is hands down my favorite neighborhood burger spot. My son and I usually get the "Arcadia" and my wife gets the "Evil Standard". What we love is the burgers are always juicy, consistent and just simply delicious. I never feel fully satisfied by an In n Out double and double, but these burgers hits the spot! What's not to love when the meat is ground every day! Here are a few tips, get the spicy chocolate shake, ask for fries to be freshly made (they feel stale at times) and always ask for some evil sauce on the side. This is just a drive thru, so plan accordingly. And oh yeah, they are closed on Monday's and Tuesdays, which I selfishly wished wasn't so. I hope that changes soon!
google avatar

Hector C.

Yelp
"The Stand" burger shoppe in Arcadia definitely has a tasty burger. This small burger joint packs a punch and brings the Jules out of anyone eating this burger. The "Grande Royal" with cheese is what we ordered with fries special sauce and a coke, or if you like a sprite to set the scene properly. We will be going back next week to try out the "Big Kahuna" burger and will give my opinion on that as well. Pretty dope concept, super dope art work (graffiti mural) and delicious burger. Check em out if you can I'm sure you'll agree.

Cedric S.

Yelp
Was told by the establishment that this thing with legs was an onion and not a roach or bug. Zoom in and believe what you believe. I say roach or moth. I'm not convinced that a piece of onion walked its way into the frier. I returned all of the food and was verbally told that I would receive a refund for all of the food. I asked for the receipt and only saw the fries removed and not the rest of the order. After asking again for the full refund, I received it with no problems. The food was seasoned well, but I didn't expect the extra protein on the side of the fries.
google avatar

Nina C.

Yelp
This place is a drive thru only. The burgers are pretty decent! They aren't smash burger size but a little thicker than in and out. My husband loved this place a lot. I thought the burgers were good but a tad bit dry and could use more seasoning. Next time I won't ask for the lettuce cause it was a lot. I'd rather have had just the Pattie's and toppings. I do appreciate they they lettuce wrapped it very well! I could easily eat it like a sandwich and it wasn't messy at all! We did ask for sauces on the side but after leaving, we realized we didn't get any sauces at all. Bummer but not a biggie! I would like to come back and give this place another try especially since my husband and family loved it so much. We also got two shakes and the family' agreed they were amazing. Definitely get the shakes! Don't skip on them! We got chocolate and pumpkin.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
The burgers at this place are truly exceptional. I recommend The Arcadia burger because of the guacamole that's in it. The quality is well worth the price. This is a drive thru only establishment, so not the place to go to if you're looking for a sit down element. The graffiti esthetic makes it scream Americana, especially if you're getting a milkshake and fries. I do wish you could sit down at a table to enjoy the peak freshness of your meal and not risk splattering crumbs in your car, but if you carefully eat over the bag, or standing up outside, it isn't so bad. The employees who run the place are always willing to hook up any extra ketchup or other condiments you might have in mind, so don't shy away from asking!

Sophia S.

Yelp
THE BEST BURGER IN THE CITY!! orgasm in my mouth fr that's all i wanted to say but it has to be 85 characters

Kim F.

Yelp
The Stand... You have been a long-standing favorite for me and my family but you have to do better than this. we are always willing to splurge a bit for your delicious burgers, $7.49 shakes, and even pay $1 extra for one tiny extra sauce... however when fries cost $4.50, there needs to be more than this and not soggy.

Austin B.

Yelp
Not so hidden gem but the best milkshakes in the vally bar none! Always worth the drive will be back soon

Yelp
This review is overdue! In the last two months I've discovered The Stand. A friend picked it up for us one night and I was blown away at how amazing the burger was. And the special sauce... mmmm chefs kiss. Anyway, I have been back myself several times since then and every time I go not only is my food consistent and delicious but the employees are beyond friendly and polite. I feel like they go above and beyond with customer service which is really appreciate this day in age! Thanks for being great!

I've been going to The Stand since they opened in 2013. I haven't been for a couple years but saw them in the AZ Central March madness burger bracket so went to get it today and was very disappointed. They definitely changed their hamburger patty's. They used to be fresh ground beef lightly smashed burgers and you could tell it was fresh. The patties today are 100% a different recipe and might be frozen patties bought or made elsewhere based on the taste. The grilled onion recipe changed as well. They used to be larger cut grilled onions and they were plentiful on the burger. The grilled onions today were cooked way down and not many on the burger. I used to love this place and was my favorite burger in town and it's sad to see they changed the original recipe. It's good but not great anymore.
