Where to find French cuisine in Detroit - Eater Detroit

"This upscale bistro offers French-American cuisine with a menu of tried-and-true dishes like the steak tartare or oysters on the half shell. The roasted duck, a nod to the classic duck à l’Orange, is served with a sweet orange reduction and tangy kumquats, and topped with charred scallions. Save room for the roaming dessert cart, decked out with treats like rich dark chocolate mousse, topped with ganache, creme anglaise, and fresh berries." - Will Reaume

The Esters Review - Greenpoint - New York - The Infatuation

"The Esters has everything you want from a neighborhood bar, and it’s an extremely pleasant place to loiter on a sunny day. This Greenpoint spot has patio seating, lots of potted plants, and a few floor-to-ceiling windows that swing open when the weather’s nice. They serve a few interesting cocktails with ingredients like whey and chili syrup, and there are some meats and cheeses to snack on—but our favorite thing to order is the pizza. The rectangular pies at The Esters share some DNA with the Detroit-style ones at Emmy Squared and Ace’s, with thick, fluffy crust that’s crispy on the outside and chewy in the middle. Try the garlicky You’ve Got Kale layered with mozzarella, ricotta, and shaved pecorino, and don’t forget to squeeze the accompanying lemon wedge over the top." - Bryan Kim

The food was amazing, server was polite, and I believe the owner or manager was on the floor and checked in on us more than once. Wonderful atmosphere. Definitely worth the hour trip we made to dine there. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning. Side note… I forgot my cell phone at the table and not only did they call me, but came out of the restaurant and began to walk it up the sidewalk and met up with my husband and I. Truly great experience.

Our recent dining experience at a the statler restaurant was exceptional. The menu offered a superb selection, and our server provided outstanding service, expertly guiding us through the food and beverage options. Her thoughtful gesture of a complimentary anniversary dessert was a delightful surprise.

Google
This was a wonderful dining experience with delicious food. My Seafood Bouillabaisse was perfect! Nice, large scallops, plenty of mussels, and a tasty petite Lobster Tail. The cocktails were great, too! It's definitely a great spot for a girls' night out or a flirty date nite in the middle of downtown Detroit.

Got to the restaurant 20 minutes before our time but we were still seated promptly. Service was great and the food was exceptional. Definitely a place to eat with great service and food. Not a 1 n done for us..

Google
The atmosphere, food, and service were all fantastic! The cocktails were top-notch, and our server was attentive and friendly. I started with the French onion soup, which was absolutely delicious, and the oysters were fresh and flavorful. As a self-proclaimed mac n’ cheese connoisseur, I can confidently say their lobster mac n’ cheese deserves an A+. The lobster was perfectly cooked, and the portion was generous. I also tried the short rib burger with fries, and it did not disappoint. The fries were crispy, reminiscent of McDonald’s but even better, and the burger was excellent—juicy and full of flavor. Highly recommend!

Nice atmosphere. Great food and service. Katrina was pleasant, friendly, and knew the menu very well. I hope she's there on our next visit. Definitely recommend!

Google
My date and I both did the 4 course tasting menu and were blown away. We are not drinkers so we skipped the wine pairing, but $70 for 4 full size courses is a WOW for value. Every course was absolutely amazing, food is above and beyond. Lovely quiet atmosphere as well for a relaxing evening. Nice yummy mock-tails for non-drinkers. We went on the 4th of July weekend so it was definitely one of their slower nights. Despite being slow and ending up being the last couple in the restaurant, they paced our 4 courses amazingly and we never ever felt rushed to leave or rush through our courses. I’m surprised I don’t hear more people talking about this place. Will definitely be coming back and telling friends!!

Very nice ambiance with delicious food. I went with a large group (8) and we had no problem getting seated. Our food came out promptly and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Merv was the quintessential bar tender: professional, polite, attentive, engaging, and he made perfect drinks. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This was nice but most items are ala carte.. we started off with the Burrata and hot honey, it was DEElish but the crostini was very stale sadly. they did bring us extra. The complimentary French bread was divine with fresh cream butter! My Filet was supposed to be served with peppercorn but I didn't taste any, served with a yummy cognac sauce. Sadly i ordered med rare and was overcooked . The beet salad was just a salad with beets , nothing special , just a smear of goat cheese on the plate for looks. We did have great service. This was a one and done for me.

Yelp
What prey tell is a Statler? Legend has it that Bob "Wacky pants" Statler happened upon this spot while searching the globe for Ostriches. Why Detroit no one knows, but what we do know is since then award winning food has pleased the palate of many a man. So get down to wacky pants restaurant, get the burger, it's RAALLY goooooodddd, get a few beers, and enjoy some of Bobs best service. Seriously, service is top notch! But get the burger - it rocks

Yelp
Brand new Executive Chef in last 90 days and WOW what an amazing new menu and experience. Some old favorites still on menu like Duck and short ribs- but includes new options for our non beef or pork eaters (my hubby). I enjoyed Salmon with Risotto and Rainbow Carrots- large wild salmon portion. My Husband had grilled U-12 shrimp with handmade pasty in a light Parmesan sauce. We ordered elevated Mac-n-Cheese with homemade noodles and rich fresh cheese adults will love. The ultra smooth mashed potatoes are creamed with butter and garlic. Finally dessert- Chocolate Mouse covered in dark chocolate and Hazelnut, chocolate cake with a chocolate spoon to eat the dessert. Impressed with cost point and size of menu items. If you want to order To-Go do order in person at bar and sBe 25% over app! Great restaurant to take a client since David Whitney Marriott is across the street or a great date night inside or on outside patio.

Yelp
Friendly and attentive service. Delicious pastries. Relaxed vibe and lovely decor. Spacious interior with lots of seating. Outdoor patio with fire pit. I enjoyed my brunch experience, starting with my lemon blueberry cooler mocktail. The croquet madame sandwich was very tasty, large, and filling. The potatoes were good too. My friend enjoyed her lobster Benedict.

Yelp
Phenomenal food and service. We enjoyed brunch at the Statler. Everything was well balanced, perfect portion sizes, and full of flavor. The "avocado toast" was a real treat, full of lots of surprise sweetness and tartness from citrus and other ingredients.

Yelp
Good: Being that the FreePress race was happening it made it difficult to find a good parking spot, which made me late for my reservation. Thank you for allowing me to dine for brunch. I ordered the poached lobster Benedict. Unfortunately the lobster didn't taste fresh. I frown on sending my plate back, but there was no way that could ignore the taste. So, I was offered to order another dish. The salmon salad. No salmon was available (heavy sigh) Grilled shrimp was offered for a replacement. The shrimp also had a non freshness taste as well. By this time I was frustrated and hungry. I ate the salad and put the shrimp aside. Pictured : The short rind bordelaise This dish was good but would've been great tasting if it was seasoned a bit more, and was served hot. I didn't want to leave hungry so I gave it another chance by ordering a cheese danish (tasty) and coffee. Thank goodness for the staff, which saw the concern on my face and was very attentive to me. 5 stars for that.

Yelp
Sadly disappointing. We came in before a show at the Detroit Opera House with a reservation. You walk in and expect a high-end gourmet experience, but it all just seems a bit lacking. The food itself is fine. We ordered a fried calamari appetizer which didn't look particularly appealing. The fry was a little greasy, and there really wasn't anything setting this calamari above and beyond average. (In short, I feel like I could have ordered it at a chain like Carraba's and gotten equal if not better quality). There was nothing special about the Bouillabaisse I ordered or the braised short rib (though I considered it to be better than the bouillabaisse). The Hazelnut Chocolate Chiffon dessert was dry and deeply unimpressive. The service seemed to mimic the quality of food. There were moments where our server was friendly and helpful but then employees wandering to refill water or take empty plates just seemed to be wandering and didn't always seem to know what they were supposed to be doing. For the prices that this establishment charges, we'd expected a higher equality experience. This wasn't it. We'll look elsewhere the next time we catch a show.

Yelp
We loved The Statler! Delicious food, good menu options, great service, cozy atmosphere, and dog-friendly!

Yelp
Enjoyed dining at the Statler after show at the Fisher Theatre. They offered a fixed price menu with choices for appetizer, salad, entree and dessert for a reasonable price. We decided to go with that after my first choice of scallops were not an option as they were all out. We started with cocktails La Jolie and French Martini which were excellent. Calamari was appetizer. Beet salad was excellent. Entrees of Braised Short Ribs and Ragout were very good. Desserts were key lime pie - large and delicious. We also ordered a chocolate dessert that they served with a candle celebrating a birthday which was a special touch. Pleasant atmosphere, good service.

Yelp
We had a wonderful date night at The Statler. The food and drinks were delicious and the atmosphere was warm. Our server, Katrina, went above and beyond to make our experience great! I have Celiac and she verified everything with the chef, who was able to easily accommodate making everything gluten free.

Yelp
I made a reservation here for my wife and I ahead of a Lions home game. It started great, the vibes were dope, they had a great DJ, and the staff was nice. But things went downhill pretty quickly... First, they...are...slow. It took quite some time to get my espresso martini, but I wasn't that pressed. But the food took FOREVER. I ordered chicken & waffles, and my wife order the cheeseburger & pommes frites. Mines was pretty good, but her fries were cold, the burger was pink after she asked for well done (and had asked the server to confirm the kitchen can do it), and the sauce she asked for on the side was missing. We told the server, and she took it back and brought another burger...that was also pink. She gave up on that and ordered the short rib...which then took a whole 'nother FOREVER to come out. There was a notable negative change in demeanor from our server as well after sending the first dish back. We were told more than once that the kitchen & bar were backed up and they were slammed. I would expect that this would be expected before a home football game. Again, they had a DJ and there was staff wearing Lions gear, I don't think this situation snuck up on them. Overall a ton of unrealized potential. My experience matches many of the others I've seen: nice ambiance with slow service and meh food. Vibes aren't enough, I won't be returning.

Yelp
An excellent experience from start to finish! This is a beautiful restaurant, feels elegant but maintains a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere with their music choice and friendly staff. Food was exceptional and our server, Arie, was knowledgeable, friendly, but not overbearing. All in all, a great place to treat yourself!

Yelp
Yet another terrible experience. I gave this place a 2nd chance and I'm still disappointed. Let me point out the one thing that was phenomenal-- the service (our waitress and waiter: Veronica and Andre) were nothing less than amazing. The food however was atrocious. I ordered the shrimp Moroccan pasta. It was unseasoned. The flavors of the sauce were unbalanced and left a serious aftertaste. I sent it back and they brought me a burger. I didn't even eat it-- gave it to homeless man. Lastly, when the bill came, they would not allow us to separate the checks. We spent about $1000 and then had to calculate the bill. Very tacky. That was my last and final time visiting. I now understand why it's always empty.

Yelp
The statler is a beautiful French restaurant that looks how you'd expect. It was dark and romantic but surprisingly not very busy on a Friday night. The staff were informative and knowledgeable. They have validated parking in a garage connected to the lobby which was really nice in the winter & so convenient compared to other restaurants in the area. We ordered the charcuterie board to start and I especially loved the fresh honey. I also got the beet salad and thought it was good & had a hearty amount of toppings. The short rib meat was average but I really like the carrots, parsnips and purée that accompanied it. My friend ordered the duck, the butter poached mushrooms and the hashed potatoes. Her sides were the way to go! I also highly recommend the French onion soup. They also have a nice selection of cocktails and mock-tails for anyone that doesn't drink :)

Yelp
Over 1 hour to get our food! Now the waitress' fault, this place is criminally understaffed for a Saturday night. Onion soup was great. Steak fries was cold when it hit the table, then they microwaved it and it became well done- yuck. For all of the wait and cold food they took 2 drinks off a 2 person tab. Not coming back even though it has a nice ambiance.

Yelp
Since my partner is Frenchie, I love going to "French" or French style restaurants. Looked this place up, and we were headed to Detroit for a show. Cute spot, very welcoming hosts/ manager. Told them we came up from Ohio, and they brought over a comp glass of bubbles. Nice touch. Ambiance was there. Food not so much. Frenchie ordered the mezcal drink. Tasty. I had the "smoked" old fashioned. The first drink she made me, the ice cube was forgotten, whilst the drink with the whole smoke show of lighting the chips and uncovering the glass votive over top. She apologized and was going to do it over, the correct way, but it wasn't a big deal to me. What was a bigger deal was that it was completely unbalanced. It was too sweet for an Old fashioned, which really took away from the Japanese whiskey itself. Meh Having come back from a trip to France a few months ago, I craved escargot. Normally served in an escargot type dish where there are basically little cubby holes for the snails in butter/ garlic, the "fondue" they were swimming in when it came was to be desired. Think hot water, a tiny bit of buttered broth. Ew. Did these snails come from a can? They were small and um, not great. The profiteroles were more like puffy soup crackers. Not sure what was happening here. Frenchie has the foie and waffle. Sounding kitschy, but the execution... terrible. The piece of foie was on the small side. The waffle was fat and so sickly sweet. You need a little sweetness / tart to break up the fattiness or richness of the foie, but in this case, it was utterly lost in translation. Coquilles St-Jacques. Scallops cooked well. Pomme purée tasty, lump free. Mushrooms, juicy, seared properly. Crispy leeks. No they were a bit underwhelming, gummy even. Artichokes, good. Bacon, a smidge on the chewy inedible side. Perhaps they use old or leftover accouterments. Frenchies duck was cooked perfectly, skin could have been a touch crispier. Side of pomme. What in the hell happened to the garlic bits? They were stuck to the inside of my teeth. Legitimately felt like I was eating candied pieces of garlic. I tasted them the rest of my evening and throughout the show we went to afterwards. Uncomfortable. Dessert. Ugh. Tasted like one that had been sitting on the the cart all day. Cake? No. Dry? Yes. Even the frosting was separately falling apart from the "cake' awful. Not fresh, not even close. Whipped cream over whipped. Sauce, I'm guessing from a commercially bought squeeze bottle. Why? I ate some of the hazelnut topping by itself. Bill with tip, $283. Never again. Never for that price.

Yelp
Much to my dismay, the menu is not very French! We had reservations for 10 for my birthday. There was another large party seated near us with three screaming children under the age of four. They were screaming all during our dinner. We told management and they did nothing! Very disappointing.

Yelp
Came here as part of a large group. I was very excited since it's one of the restaurants my friends have been hyping. I wasn't really sure what to expect since I'm not very familliar with French food. Lamb en Ballon, Escargot, Steak Tartare- The steak tartare was easily forgettable, not heavily seasoned, but the meat also didn't have much flavor. I couldn't taste any smokiness from the sea salt despite a neutral background. I wish they had mixed everything in the the tartare so you didn't have to mix in the Scotch egg yolk which was slightly challenging. Amazing presentation though. The snails were unique. I have never had them before so it was interesting to try. They were heavilty drowned in the garlic butter sauce so it was hard to discern the taste. The profiteroles were good. The lamb meatballs were delicious! Not overly gamey. The mint sauce really complemented the lamb and this dish was executed perfectly. Chopped Caesar Salad- A normal salad, nothing special. There was a thin smattering of finely shredded cheese and salad dressing on top. Braised Short Rib- Very impressive presentation. The beef was tender and moist, and the jus at the bottom added additional flavor. The bed of vegetables were coated in the delicious jus and were cooked perfectly. Mini Chocolate Mousse Martini- Not really sure why they served it. You could scoop the mousse up in a single spoonful, haha. The presentation was nice but not a lot of substance. I feel bad for the dishwasher who has to remove the crumbs encrusted on the side of the bowel. Not sure if I would come here again, but it was good to try it out!

Yelp
Amazing food!!! I loved the atmosphere and the food was very solid... I had the jalapeño drink and it was so good and my husband a smoked old fashioned... Shrimp cocktail was delicious, the oysters were a bit grainy but overall would come back!

Yelp
Went here for brunch. Food was phenomenal, and portions were huge. The service was decent... A little slow for how empty the place was, but on the whole it was decent. The ambience was... Meh. I'm surprised that after only two years, there's so much wear and tear. Multiple areas of the ceiling had water stains from peaks...it's a brand new building! And the cheap wood veneer was noticeably peeling apart in our booth. I definitely got French restaurant vibes, but on the cheap. We'll definitely consider returning, I just hope the owner will put some $$ into sprucing the place up.

Yelp
Excellent meal Refined food and experience. Greg the waiter was excellent. I was expecting more mother sauces on the menu since it was a French inspired menu. I would definitely return.

Yelp
This was booked as my birthday dinner but life happened and we moved it back. So we finally went. I watched this place being remodeled. I'd ride the people mover and always pointed it out. I loved the ambiance I THOUGHT it had. The allure. Let me start by saying I felt let down walking in. The pictures maybe from a while ago. This felt like basement bar in Birmingham. Nothing wrong with that just not "upscale". Anyways, I placed a reservation and came on time. (The way they looked for tables is exactly how I did for Red Robin 20 years ago. We stood there while they figured it out.) Past booths. Past people. To a table on the side.. again, I just was not impressed. You know how you want to be just blown away... didn't happen. We ordered- honestly I forgot what I ordered that's how lackluster it was. Started with French Onion. That was solid. A very solid decision. Everything else went downhill. Maybe I expected better? We started with French onion, bread, and 2 mixed drinks. Then dinner was salmon and ragout with side hash in cream. As you see in the pictures. I forgot to get my Creme brûlée in picture, that was dessert. I will say, I had a server, an older man. Think grandpa. He was so sweet. He did his job and he himself made my first visit better. He knew the food, he knew his area and he got it done in a timely fashion. All in all.. just ok. it wasn't too expensive. We spent $200 that included a 30% tip we left for our server.

Yelp
The highlight of The Statler was definitely the staff and their high level of service. The food could've been better. I ordered the Steak Frites and for $65, the quality of the steak and the flavor profile should've been much better. I highly recommend the truffle fries. For steak fries, they were a 1000/10 and was the highlight of my meal (along with the freshly baked bread).

Yelp
My friend and I went here for the second time. Again the staff was attentive and well trained. The maître D. Came over to give us the 411 on the happenings around Detroit which was fun. The food was amazing again. I appreciate your approach to ensure a great experience.

Yelp
The ambiance is very initimate and friendly. Great for groups and celebrations. We had a great service and our waiter told us all about his recommendations. The food was amazing. I had the scallops and it was some of the best I've had. I could taste and smell the sweetness from the scallops. My husband had the duck and he said it was some of the best he has ever had.

Yelp
We went to NYE dinner with son and his girlfriend in this relatively new (2 years old) space downtown. Pro tip: pay for the valet parking, we maybe saved a tip but walked four blocks to a lot. Everyone enjoyed their drinks- French 75, French style ale, a rose and a rye "re-fashioned". Lamb meatballs were awesome. Calamari terrific. Escargot just ok but the croutons made the dish. One flaw was that the fresh bread came too late for the delicious sauces. Ragout was yummy. Scallops were cooked nicely but somehow a few of them were a bit over salted. The whipped potatoes sprinkled with crispy bacon and mushrooms took the dish over the top. The sole was a little mushy but the potatoes made the dish. Bouillabaisse was scarfed up, terrific broth, lobster and mussels. Carrot cake was the best, no key lime pie and the other dessert was too sweet. Service was prompt (surprise it was hard to hear) although as the restaurant got busy (went early) our server had more to attend to.

Yelp
We had the most amazing dinner here in such a beautifully designed restaurant with great service. Chris was our server and Ron was the manager and they both provided us with such great service through our visit. We had the mushroom flatbread, short rib tacos, Lobster stew, country Lyon salad, salmon rillette, French fries, and chocolate dessert. To drink I had a Kir Royale and it was wonderful! Can't wait to go back it was such a wonderful experience!

Yelp
Finally tried the Statler! It's been on my places to visit since they opened in Detroit! Perfect timing with the opening night of Beetlejuice at the Detroit Opera House! I made reservations to ensure we had enough time for dinner prior to the show. Note: The Statler has a happy hour at the bar and a pre-show menu in addition to the dinner menu. Our waitress Lindsay was awesome! She was so kind! Everyone we met was great! From the host, to the individual that took us to our table, everyone was great! I ordered the pre-show menu, which includes an appetizer, soup or salad, entree, and dessert. For my appetizer, I ordered the salmon rillette. I love smoked salmon! Definitely enough to share! For my second course, I ordered the French onion soup. The bread/cheese ratio was perfect. I don't like French onion soup that has too much bread and cheese. For my entree, I ordered the steak. The flavor was good. The only negative was the steak was well-done, when I ordered it medium. Lindsay was happy to re-make, but we didn't have enough time due to our show. For dessert, we got chocolate chip cookies to go. I follow the Statler on IG too! I saw that they were celebrating their one year anniversary and mentioned this. We were given a complimentary chocolate pot de creme. That was so delicious! Overall, our experience was great! Would love to bring my in laws in the summer. Definitely coming back to try their happy hour at the bar too.

Yelp
The ambiance is nice but the food is highly overrated. I got the halibut and it was bland and over cooked. There is nothing exciting about this food. I was very disappointed.

Yelp
I was pretty impressed by the Statler. I hadn't heard any of the hype so I came in with no expectations other than pics I had seen on Yelp. The service was impeccable and the food was pretty exquisite. We started with a couple drinks...I had their seasonal Old Fashioned with a walnut bitters which was well executed if on the sweet side. For appetizers we ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell, the country pate, and their calamari. All of them were wonderful. The oysters were a lot pricey at the market price that evening, just an fyi. For entrees, we tried the Coquilles St. Jacques scallops and the Steak au Poivre. Both French classics were again, well executed and wonderful. The bread that accompanied the dinner was fantastic with a whipped butter. For dessert we shared a creme brulee. It was pretty good but in hindsight I'd have chosen another option. This spot is cozy and warm, the staff was all very friendly and sharp, and the restaurant ran very smoothly. You pay a little extra to get all those attributes composed into one very enjoyable evening but it was worth it, and I'm looking forward to going back.

Yelp
I was excited for my first visit to The Statler, but shady business practices means I will never be back, and I would recommend for others to stay away. It started fine -- the place is pretty and in a great location. Server seemed nice enough, and although it was a Saturday night, they appeared to be only moderately busy. Our server initially forgot to bring out a bottle of Champagne that we ordered along with cocktails -- no biggie, but then it took a long time for him to come back with the bottle. This slow service unfortunately remained consistent throughout the night. The food was very good -- I got the petite fried chicken breast and my wife got the scallops, and we definitely enjoyed both. Our end-of-dinner Kir Royales were yummy, too. I would've given the experience 4 stars (not 5 due to slow service), but after we left is where things get really bad... I tipped just over $50 on a ~$291 bill ($309 after tax), which is 17% and felt fair considering the slow service, the forgotten drinks, and frankly the fact that you usually don't tip 20% on bottles of wine, since they take minimal effort to transport and open (unless it was a really old, special bottle that requires unique care). That means the total would come to $360. Well, I guess either the server or someone entering the receipt info. didn't like my tip so they added another $10 -- I noticed this today when I saw my credit card was charged for $370. Of course, this is illegal and I could challenge the charge (and easily win, since I kept a copy of the receipt including my tip and have the credit card statement), but for $10, it's just not worth the time. I hope they enjoy the extra $10, a lost customer for life, and this review.

Yelp
First I want to apologize for the delay in getting this write up completed. This year my wife and I decided to go to two different establishments for our anniversary. The Statler was our second night out, not second choice. Our initial impression as we walked in was what a great decor and setting looking out into the D from every seat in the house. Everything looked so new , fresh and a vibrant atmosphere to dine. Then we were seated and very pleasantly greeted by our one one and only server Richard. I want to add this is a major pet peeves of mine by high end restaurants having numerous servers oversee our table NOOOO. If Red Olive can use one server so can a high end establishment. Richard was the perfect example of a highly trained professional. He was pleasant and not over bearing , thoughtful , his knowledge of the menu was outstanding and his suggestions as he learned about our preferences was spot on. I will add he even went into great detail on the uniqueness of certain choices and differentiating them to us. Richard simply put made our evening and experience a 5 star dinner . Thank you Richard, now can you re-train the Reserve in Brighton staff on your techniques. Our meal - We stated with a couple of drinks again recommended by Richard and were just delicious kudos the the Bartender. For our the appetizer we went with one of our favorites Escargot. Served differently as it was already extracted from the shell and served in a bath of delicious garlic butter and cooked to perfection and the taste was terrific . We then also added Oysters Rockefeller and to Richards surprise I had to get the French Onion soup , my go to in a top rated restaurant. The oysters were tasty , good size, the French Onion soup was outstanding. Richard went into great detail On the unique mixture of multiple varieties of onions and cheeses and stated this is a signature soup. He was spot on another lesson to the chef at the Reserve Steak house in Brighton, go taste this French Onion soup it's the real deal. For dinner I chose the Roast Duck my wife had the Coquilles St Jacques with a side of carrots and parsnips everything was outstanding not good, but outstanding. The flavors, the portions the presentation all was perfectly executed . Then to close the dinner we went with the key lime pie. Which was presented in a rectangular slice with fresh fruit which was a refreshing change and we enjoyed very much. Again the flavor of key lime spot on creamy and not to tart and the fresh fruit was a nice subtle add on to compliment the dessert . Lastly you know I am a stickler for cleanliness and the restaurant and bathrooms were very clean. In closing no pics ... why because you just need to go yourself and if you can have Richard as your service provider I highly recommend him. Thank you and until next time ...

Yelp
Took a party of 10. Fully half of us had to send our steaks back for being overdone. Many of them did not get their replacements until others were finished- and several were even worse than the initial overcooked steak. Avoid like the plague!

Yelp
A few friends and I made reservations for The Statler for a Sunday evening. We needn't have, as it was quiet evening. There have been some mixed reviews, I'm not sure if it was that we came at a slow time, or if that over the year that they opened they found their rhythm, but we really had a good visit. I wish Yelp allowed for half stars, as I would rate the Statler as a 4.5. The restaurant is quite large and, in warm weather, there is a large patio. The ambiance is lovely, and overall is reflective of its French inspiration. The interior is open, with clean lines, low leather booths, and as the sun sets, low lighting. The wine list is quite good, I did was surprised how mixed it was, I did think it would be more French focused. I thought the menu was a good size, focused, but enough variety. It does seem to change to some extent. A friend and I split the country salad, which I think embodies what I feel they are going for- a french inspired, simple, clean, and ingredient focused dish. I had the braised short ribs (perfect for colder weather, but would be too heavy in the summer), two friends had the sole, and another had the shrimp. The seafood was definitely lighter, especially the shrimp. The portions for the fish was very good, the ribs were actually quite large, even sharing I was not able to finish. We all enjoyed everything, it was a great meal. All of the meat was cooked well and entire plate was paired well. The service was excellent, we could not have asked for better than Greg. He managed to strike the right balance between giving information and being annoying, as well as checking in. Everything was well paced, and served temperature correct. Expect a pricer meal, I feel that some items were worth it, while, others (shrimp cocktail, ahem!) were a bit much. This is a good option for a romantic dinner or a nicer celebration.

Yelp
The flavors and preparations were great, but the portions are small. I appreciated the server's wine recommendations.

Yelp
Celebrated a wedding anniversary here, main question is was it worth it? It's pretty large & has outdoor patio. Not an 'intimate' experience. Top 40 music didn't set a mood--don't you want to set a mood for French food? They need to up their game in that respect. Staffing problems? High end menu yet our young waitress seemed so confused by so many things. When she described a special, she didn't offer pricing info, I specifically had to ask. Again, when she said we could add scallops, lobster tail or shrimp to any entree, I asked what the entailed. Again no pricing info. My husband shrugged & said 'get it-it's our anniversary'. Delicious but added $45 to our large tab!!! Did not expect it to cost as much as an entree. The bread is fresh & WONDERFUL, supplied by an un-named local bakery (I asked, but apparently they don't tell?). We shared the Mussels for an appetizer, they were very delicious!! Great tomato broth with veggies, great to dip that bread into. I had the steak frites, hot & delicious, very very large serving. Lobster tail added, succulent & nicely cooked. Husband had the short ribs, which he said were delicious. They have us a complimentary dessert, pineapple upside down, which was very good. Maitre D, was phenomenal, he flew around all night, helping wherever he was needed. Busboys missed his cue to clear our 1st course, so he did it himself. But busboys showed up twice to clear plates while we were still eating. Summary--good but not spectacular. They're just missing out on ambience & service. Meal good but not OMG good. And we had a very large tab but we do go all out P.S. if you pour the last red wine from a bottle into a glass, check it for sediment

Yelp
Great service! The staff was really professional and down to earth. Every dish I tried was delicious and flavorful right down to the Caesar salad. The decor was inviting; lots of windows to look out at the city, great view! A little pricey but I did not mind, I love great food and a great experience.

Yelp
I love trying new places especially downtown but this was one of my least favorite. The food was just so so. We had told the waitress we weren't eating bacon, a lot of their food had bacon on it. When we ordered the Brussels sprouts we had no idea there would be chunks of bacon on them. Our waitress didn't mention it and the distribution didn't either. They were soggy and not good. The best thing we ordered was the mushrooms. It wasn't super busy the night we went but our service was pretty slow. The restaurant itself was fine. I wouldn't rush back here at all.

Yelp
We had a good birthday dinner at The Statler. It is located in the City Club in downtown Detroit, and is a fairly new establishment. We started with some cocktails. I chose the jalapeño margarita. It was tasty! The lobster bisque was a good start to a wonderful meal of the short rib. Comfort food at it's finest! So tender and melts in your mouth. I ordered a lobster tail on the side and it was equally delicious. The Statler is an upscale French American bistro you must try!

Yelp
The good: Salmon was prepared perfectly, but potatoes were borderline warm. Salads (apple harvest and French country salad) were very good. The bad: over-cooked short ribs, tough and chewy. Food has been great in past...$60 halibut was disappointing. Of note: Waiter attentive. Over-diligent help: too anxious to clear, interruptions of conversations. Please, chill! P.S. You can park for free in structure next door. Give your license # to hostess.

Yelp
My first five stars of 2024! After my last few downtown restaurant visits I will be honest that my expectation was not very high . From the time we walked in, until we left, we felt very taken care of. I was thrown off a bit when our reservation said birthday and I was not asked about it being my birthday.. but anyway they more than made up for that "overlookey. We started off by ordering a couple of appetizers. My husband order escargot and I ordered the lobster stew. Both were well seasoned and tasted fabulous. My lobster bisque (it is really not a stew), was delicious, and full of sherry wine flavor, but not in a direct way. The wine was hidden in the background enhancing the dish, but not taking over the dish. I then ordered the duck confit over white beans... picture me giving a standing ovation. The duck was rich, but not greasy. The flavors on my palate were new and delightful. I closed my eyes a couple of times to get the full flavor profile. I stopped myself from eating the whole thing because I had to taste an entree out of the kitchen. I did just that when I ordered the sole dish. The dish was a crispy fillet of sole. On top of it was mini potatoes, and a host of other veggies, and a hollandaise like sauce. The dish was definitely French but it was cooked with SOUL!!! The chefs name was Julia Child's Leroy Johnson!!! I appreciated the French dish, but the soulful hands that prepared it brought it to life. Lastly, my desert was the freebie birthday dish. It was even delicious; not some obligatory ice cream scoop that has lain in the refrigerator soaking up other smells. As I will be experiencing birthday treats for the next 8 weeks, I thank the Statler for making this one special! Kudos

Yelp
Went here for a special event. Arrived a few moments late after trouble with the parking meter. (Download the app!) We were sat very close to the door. It's open with lots of oak. Our waiter greeted us and took our drink order and disappeared for a while. He came back after a while with drinks and asked about our order. Not a lot of input on the menu, mentioned a special, more input when we asked specific questions. We got the charred foie gras on waffle and French onion soup to begin. My companion had the duck and I had the bouillabaisse Provençal. I liked the foie gras and found it to be a bit sweet with the jam and waffle. The French onion soup was rich with amazing broth. The duck was a healthy portion. The bouillabaisse also - no one really helped me get the lobster out of its shell so may have gotten some soup on my dress. Then a chocolate mousse for our event! Yummmmm and amazing rolls.. with salted butter. Food was very rich! Hands down- amazing food. Service was not what I expected for the price of things. Took a while to get drinks, help deshelling would have been an asset!

Yelp
Excellent food, great service. Recommend the French Onion soup. The Steak Tartare and Calamari appetizers were great. The ragu noodles were delicate and tasty, the sauce could have been more flavorful. Overall we had a great experience and will be back.

Yelp
It was hit and miss... but the highs were so high I still give a 4 star review... so first the pate... so good... dont miss it... french onion soup was very flavorful broth but so little cheese on it that you could see the bread right through the cheese, and so no cheese pull.. sad... the lobster stew had such a nice flavor, so much lobster flavor! tasted like drawn butter through lobster... however... a little too literally as it was served luke warm and the butter was separating and that made it unpleasant to eat with the grease... you can see in the pic that the soup was already cold when they brought it as the butter is separated as he pours... but waiter didnt seem to mind... (and see pic for actual lobster in it, not like the pic on the menu) also the waiter had really weird white crusty stuff under both his eyes that was not appetizing... why didnt any staff tell him to clean up? the potato hash was amazing! but the sauce it sat in tasted like it was spoiled so that ruined that... fresh pasta was very good! (but why are we still using veal in 2023?) steak was fine cooked perfectly and good seasoning salt on the outside, nice char branzino was very boring, no seasoning, literally just melted butter and a half a lemon but the fish itself had NO seasoning on it at all... creme brulee!!!! also sooo good... but then they put cool whip on top instead of making whip cream, probably b.c the cream was spoiled (see the potato sauce lol) so that was gross... not a fan of cool whip....

Yelp
Has to be the best French restaurant in metro detroit. The food is phenomenal the braised beef was my favourite dish that I got from here. The ragout was very delicious but it was a bit heavy and oily for my liking. The steak tartare and seared foie gras was alright. Personally I found the foie gras not very true and authentic but it was unique and delicious, but would not be my first pick on the menu. The service was great. The server gave recommendation based on his likings and personal opinions which we appreciated and ended up enjoying very much. Very personable customer service experience. Beautiful interior and the valet service was very convenient. Would love to return in near future

Yelp
Excellent! Felt like we were in a bistro in Europe with the ambiance here. Love the decor and ample outdoor seating, however reservations do not apply for the outdoor area. Our server was amazing, very attentive and friendly. Everyone in my group loved their food. We sampled everything from oysters Rockefeller to lobster bisque, salmon and short rib. The dessert menu looked so good but we could not eat another bite. I would also love to try brunch sometime.

Yelp
The staff is wonderful and the owner/manager knows hospitality! I was lucky enough to have been part of a special event prior to opening offering hors d'oeuvres and they were absolutely delicious! Our group was blown away by the flavors. When I simply asked about any allergy information in the food, the manager went out of his way to have something made that I was able to eat and it was delicious. I've never been a fan of vegetable rolls, but somehow these vegetable rolls changed me. The mocktail was also amazing, don't know what it was, but it was great. I know they also have a huge wine list! I know many vegans struggle to find fine dining places, but the struggle is OVER! The statler will work with you to find something to eat so even if you don't see anything on the menu, come in and you will find something to eat for you and your carnivore partners! There's valet parking right around the corner between Washington & Bagley on Clifford through Premier parking or street parking if you prefer. The statler is a one of a kind dining experience with excellent food and customer service to match! 10/10 recommend!
