The Up & Up

Had such a great time here! The drinks were phenomenal and the service was really excellent. It’s a great place to impress people since it feels very exclusive but it’s actually quite easy to make a reservation. The one downside was they kicked us out after exactly two hours which felt a bit abrupt but I get they need to accommodate everyone and it’s a small place.

Fantastic cocktails served by super friendly and knowledgeable staff. I’ve usually made reservations when I bring friends but on a few occasions was able to get in right when they opened - usually a long wait list though otherwise during peak weekend times. Darkly lit ambiance for a small speakeasy lounge vibe.

Kaila, our bartender, was incredible and really knew her stuff. It was such an incredible atmosphere and the drinks were SO GREAT! I will definitely be back!! The staff was so kind and you can tell a lot of hard work is put into this bar!

Tried to go here on a weekend without reservations but the wait was far too long so we returned on a Monday evening as walk ins and were able to get a table (only had to wait 10-15 minutes). The atmosphere and ambiance was super lovely - great for a date night or intimate gathering with close friends. The cocktails definitely met my expectations and the server made our decision making process really easy. Overall, we had an awesome experience and I would go back for sure! One thing to note, this isn’t really a “speakeasy” like people are mentioning. The sign is on the door outside and you just walk down a few steps to get in. Make a reservation in advance if you can!

Had a great experience here, enjoyed a couple of unique whiskey cocktails which is rare since most cocktail bars only have slight variations on old fashions and Manhattan’s. Knowledgeable, efficient service. Elegant decor, and a great atmosphere. Highly recommend making reservations, there was a 2.5 hour wait when I arrived, so I went to another cocktail bar and 1.5 hours later got the text that my seat was ready here. It made for a lovely evening!

Wonderful speakeasy near Washington Square Park. Go down a flight of stairs and take a break from the noisy NYC streets. Lots of excellent cocktail choices for around $20 and they are very tasty. Perfect place to catch up with a friend or go on a date. A good change to your evening plans. Service is great (as speakeasy bars should be expected to have) and the atmosphere is just perfect. The engraved ice is very cool too.

A great bar with super friendly staff and great vibe! There is a wide range of cocktails here with various spirits. I would recommend the hammer factor the most for old fashioned lovers. It is made out of rye instead of bourbon, but the rye fragrance is strong with the spices in the drink. The Disco Volante is also a good drink with clarifies milk, which makes the touching creamy. The drink is good overall, but the orange fragrance is slightly too much for me, but the drink is still pretty good and might be acceptable for others! A recommended bar here near Washington Square Park!

Stupidly good cocktail menu. Incredibly informed staff and excellent service. Prices are what you would expect. Great spot for elevated date night drinks. Wouldn't bother with any of the snacks due to their lack of value.

One of my fave little cocktail bars. Walk down the stairs from a busy WV block and enter the dark, cozy, bar. Bar seats available, but little tables available as well. Delicioussss drinks - probable one of my favorite I've ever had. Haven't tried the food - they have some snacks available. The service is always great. They are helpful in finding something for you and answering any questions about the drinks. I typically make a reservation (and they usually have them available). I have put my name on the waitlist once and got in shortly after as well.

Came on a Saturday evening--around 8pm--and could get seated, but a reservation would probably be needed for later. our server was incredibly helpful, and the drink was amazing! will definitely be coming back

So fun to get buzzed in the door. I would have walked right by if someone had not recommended. They take reservations but we got lucky on a Monday night. Better to book in advance because it's pretty intimate. Fun cocktails and mocktails. Small bites are available for purchase like truffle popcorn and olives. There was also a cheese plate but we were on route to dinner.

The Up & Up is where speakeasy meets mixology. The menu consists of twists on classic drinks such as a midori sour or a Negroni but elevated in ways you would never expect. Their drinks take your taste buds on a wild ride and leave you wanting more. The bartenders are extremely kind and work with you to find the perfect drink which is different from other bars. The vibe here is chill and it makes it the perfect spot to grab drinks with friends/on a date and take a break from the busy city. Up & Up is for the adventurers or for the classics who are going to leave adventurers!

Second time here! I love the variety of drinks, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like it's a rotating menu with drinks their bartenders newly created. Service and hostess are amazing, ambiance is great, and I love the culture and vibes the bar has. The menu even had a section of rule, including a rule for men to not approach women to not disturb their peace LOL

Really large cocktail list and it's a great spot for a date nearby to a bunch of other restaurants and the cellar. Definitely try to get a reservation as it gets busy.

Nice quiet and intimate bar. Chill speakeasy bar where you can actually converse with good drinks. Came on a Thursday night and it wasn't busy. Updated: after going to multiple bars including employees only and double chicken please, I can safely say this was my favorite bar.

I was so incredibly pleased with my experience here on Saturday. I was able to get a last minute open seat at the bar for one. (Thank you to the host for squeezing me in!) The interior is sexy and dimly lit, this is definitely a great spot for a date. I sat at the bar and had the most lovely experience talking with and being served by Izamel. They were so warm and friendly and really elevated my experience at this bar, especially being a solo diner, they made me feel looked after. He helped me pick out two drinks and explained their different notes perfectly. I tried the Disco Voltane (which he said is reminiscent of a creamsicle- totally agree) and it was perfectly creamy, sweet and delicious! I also got the 'Insanely good Mindori sour' and guess what? It was... an insanely good midori sour. For some reason I kept thinking "this is a sweet grasshopper drink" not sure why... but it was absolutely yummy and I would totally get it again. I even got a sample of a small shot which was very cute and even had a little straw. Overall, I had an amazing experience and I was so glad I was finally able to stop in and drink here. I will definitely be back to try some more interesting and flavorful combinations, 5/5

The Up & Up is a cool speakeasy that's quite easy to miss. Luckily, we saw the small sign pointing to the basement and rang the doorbell to be let in. Staff was friendly and actually provided recommendations instead of saying, "it depends on what you like." Paisley Park (5/5): Interesting drink recommended by the server. It was kind of savory in taste... was a bit weird at first but it definitely grew on me! I liked the combo of mezcal and ume plum liquor. Pricey at $23, but I guess it was worth a try!

This was more of an up and down experience for me (get it?). But seriously, I wish I could of loved this place. As for all speakeasy bars, there's always a code word or a hidden doorbell that makes you feel like you're in on a secret. This one was a short stairway down where you ring the doorbell and the host leads you into a dimly lit and almost spacious (for nyc standards) bar. My excitement was sparked by the bubbly waitress and I was almost convinced I came to the right place. The magic faded when we got our cocktails. Don't get me wrong, the cocktails are definitely good, but I was off-put by how sweet they were. I like a little sweetness in my cocktails, but I felt like someone accidentally threw in a tablespoon of sugar in each drink. I got the midori sour, the gin & tonic, and another cocktail which I forgot the name of, but the only non sweet cocktail was the gin & tonic and it was not my favorite. Maybe I just chose the wrong cocktails. Maybe gin is not what up & up specializes in, I don't know. What I do know, is that the vibes are better than the drinks and there are probably better bars in the area.

It was a dark and stormy Sunday... (don't worry, this isn't going to be tied-in with a cocktail later), close to 5pm. We were looking for some late afternoon post-lunch libations and didn't want to walk further than a few feet from where my husband had just wolfed down a slice from Artichoke Basille. Yelp pointed us right across the street to this little lifesaver. Total downpour. I'm sure you can imagine the good feeling of landing on the doorstep of a subterranean lair. Rang the bell and admitted that we didn't have resos (I doubt you need them at off-times like this, but I appreciate that they are a possibility). We were quietly ushered to bar seats (wish I had asked for one of the tables instead but I figured they were reserved. They were not, however, as several remained open for the entire hour or so that we were there). We were told we could stay until approximately 7:30. A little weird (that was like 2.5 hours away) but OK. I guess there are those folks who overstay... It's a lovely place, sleek and sophisticated speakeasy vibes, mixologists expertly attending to their concoctions. I had a Rum Running Gentleman, which contains a lovely large signature ice cube (yes, that's their uber cool logo etched in). The drink didn't have the flavor profile I was looking for, as all I could taste was rum. While all of the drinks are beautifully put together (we had a birds eye view), most appeared to be alcohol-forward (read: strong). I didn't see much in the way of wine and that's my preference, so take this review with a grain of salt. I also recommend that you ask your bartender for recommendations.

Stumbled upon this cocktail bar on a night out. It was an hour wait so we went somewhere else and got a text once ready. I suggest to make reservations in advance! This place can def pass for a speakeasy with the dark ambiance and somewhat pricier drinks. They were on the pricier side but they did not cheap out on the alcohol. I ordered the hold, please and my friend ordered the bring June flowers. She was able to switch the tequila for gin! They also gave water and refilled often! I wouldn't stop here every time on my trip out it would be a nice place to have a date once in a while.

super cute speakeasy vibes! We came on a friday night at 12 and had to put our name down but it was about 15 min wait. I just wanted a quick espresso martini but their version doesn't have the foam or espresso bean but still tasted like an espresso martini? They also have this cute treasure chest that you can grab random things so we just got matching rings for the mems! This place is more intimate so good for small parties or dates

What a cool vibe! The Up & Up is a super fun alley type speakeasy that is nostalgic and well-kept. It's super fancy for a date night and they offer some small appetizers with your fancy drinks as well. My girlfriend and I got the charcuterie board and some fun drinks to pair. The staff is classy and very pleasant. Originally, I booked a reservation after seeing that this is the scene of the old Gaslight Cafe from Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. We couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised at how much nicer this bar is than depicted in the movie! We had an awesome evening at the Up&Up!

What a hidden gem tucked away in west village! Loved everything about this speakeasy! Ambiance: 10/10 ( intimate dark setting that's perfect for dates) Drinks: 10/10 high quality and great recipes! Barricaded mountain top (10/10) their twist of a classic Negroni, but may even be better than the Negroni (spoken as a true Negroni fan). Instead of the Campari in a classic Negroni, they use italicus rosolio di bergamotto that gives it the floral/ slight sweetness taste. I love bergamot in my perfume, and this tastes as good as it smells Mezcal safecracker- kind of like a spicy mezcal drink. It has mezcal, Campari, and Chile liquor. I didn't like it as much as the other drink, but this is a great choice if you like mezcal and drinks that are spirit forward! Service: our bartender was super knowledgeable and attentive! Highly recommend this place!

This place is charming!! Classic speakeasy with delicious drinks. Perfect before and/or after spot bc of its proximity to the comedy clubs. Must go!

The Up & Up was on several "best bars," and "best cocktail" lists for NYC. I've been making the rounds in the city, trying to find the best and most creative cocktails. The Up & Up had some good cocktails. I wasn't disappointed with any of them. I had gin drinks, vodka drinks. They also have whiskey/bourbon drinks and scotch. Like the other bar I tried this night, I feel some (not all) of the drinks had more ice than drink. The main thing about this bar that knocks it down a star is that it thinks it's too cool. Service is flashy when making drinks, and they are cool bartenders, but they are reserved and maybe a little cold. There are a few tables, but as a single, I got sat at the bar. The issue with this for me is that I'm 5'2, and there is no foot rest at the bar, so it was very uncomfortable. The drinks were decent. They also have snacks, like nuts and charcuterie boards. But it doesn't have the character or warmth of other bars nearby, such as Goodnight Sonny and Death & Co, among others. Try it once if you must, but I've had better drinks and better times.

Great to sit down, relax and chat with friends. Amidst the divy bars, there is this oasis where you don't have to shout to have a conversation and the floors are not sticky. Most of the time when I come here, it is packed or hard to get in. I tried my luck on a Sunday at 6 pm and was able to be seated right away with a party of 4 people. The cocktail list is extensive and most of the time I am lost. I usually ask for a recommendation from the bartender. Let them know the flavor profile you are seeking (bright, refreshing, earthy, etc), and the type of liquor, and they will point you in the right direction. By the way, I had the Hammer Factor and it is indicative of its effects. The Happy Trails was light and refreshing, nice for a summer day or an escape from the winter dreariness. Yup, drinks are $19 here. It is well worth it because you get quality drinks and a pleasant atmosphere.

Nice ambiance but this place stinks. My friend thought it smelled like dead rats. We were all itchy after we left. Nobody in my party thought their drinks were particularly good but the service was alright. I had the Cosmotropolis and thought it was a good tasting drink. One of my friends doesn't drink so she had the non-alcoholic cocktail Thirsty Ghost. She said it was sweet lemonade (this one was $19). It was too sweet to be in the mocktail category.

Had an amazing time on a date after a comedy show here. The drinks are on the pricier side, but I was a huge fan of the drinks and the ambience! Highly recommend this spot as a night cap for dates.

The Up & Up is a popular speakeasy-style cocktail bar. I recommend making reservations, as it gets quite busy. I arrived on a Saturday evening with a reservation, and I was seated immediately. The interior is dimly lit with a nice lit up bar, playing into the speakeasy vibes. For drinks, I tried The Quilt Room and Happy Trails (both pictured). Both drinks were really good, but my favorite would have to go to The Quilt Room. It had sweet and citrusy flavors without being TOO sweet. You can definitely taste the quality in each of their carefully crafted drinks. Presentation was also a 10/10, from the branded napkin, to the garnish, down to having the logo imprinted on the ice cubes. If you're a fan of visiting the city's speakeasy style bars, I would highly recommend adding The Up & Up to your list!

Put our names down for the waitlist on a Thursday night and strolled down MacDougal St. to kill time. Wait was not as bad as it seems. We were seated at the bar and ordered 2 drinks each. Bartender was super kind to not only us but everyone seated at the bar, and he really put the effort into ensuring we had good drinks. Dim interior, limited seating, and a handful of various cocktails. Stop by if you're in the area!

finally checked this place off of my list! the bar is dimly lit, intimate, and ornate, perfect for dates of small gatherings. we were promptly seated for a 5pm reservation on a saturday afternoon. the menu had a huge selection and we were kinda overwhelmed to be honest. our server was really helpful and knowledgeable. we got the following to try: -Barricaded Mountaintop: a Negroni-like drink with a bergamot twist. loved it! -Happy Trails: a Whiskey Sour-like drink with apricot, yuzu, pineapple, and fennel. it was delicious! -Stay Gold: with bourbon, ginger, lime. it gave me the impression of a Kentucky Mule, sans mint. it was very gingery, which i like, but my friend is not a huge fan of. -Screen Door Slam: an Old-Fashioned like drink, but with addition of Aperol and Absinthe. i think all the drinks were quite inventive and had a nice range. service was great too. i think my only grip is how pricey it is. drinks are $19 a pop. as someone who loves cocktails and making cocktails at home, i'm not too impressed by the liquors that they used. they're not the most unique or interesting (Maker's Mark Bourbon, Reyka Vodka, Suntory Toki [tho i do love Suntory Toki, etc.]). overall, still a good time and will return.

The Up & Up is a hidden gem that's definitely worth seeking out. I would recommend reserving seats ahead of time via Resy to avoid the long wait times. Once we finally found the bar, which is ironically not up but down a steep set of stairs, we were transported to an intimate, dimly candlelit space that was perfect for a nightcap The expert bartender at The Up & Up was friendly and attentive, guiding my companion and me through the cocktail menu to find something that would perfectly suit our tastes. I tried three different cocktails, including the Pitter Patter (recommended by the bartender because of my love of scotch), the Butter Makes it Better (a delightful take on a toddy with butter), and the As Much as a Duck (a mezcal & scotch sour with a truly impressive kick). Each cocktail was expertly crafted, but the Pitter Patter was definitely my favorite. Still a newcomer to the local bar scene, I was blown away by the quality and creativity of the cocktails at The Up & Up. My companion, a seasoned New Yorker, agreed that these were among the best cocktails NYC has to offer. The attention to detail, the expertly crafted drinks, and the charming ambiance of The Up & Up all make it a must-visit spot for anyone looking for a memorable night out. Five stars!

The Up & Up is kind of like a speakeasy. You have to go down the stairs and ring the bell and they let you know if they have room to seat you. Three friends and I came by on the Friday before July 4th weekend at around 7:30, without a reservation. We rang the bell and the guy went to check for availability and shortly came back to let us in. I thought the place would be packed but it was half empty so not sure why he needed to check. Maybe to make it seem more exclusive? The inside is dark but not too dark. It would be a nice spot for a date. Cocktails are expertly made but pricey. They are $19 a pop. My friend ordered a mocktail and was also charged $19! I had the 'One-Star Yelp Review' (as a Yelper should lol), which is Reyka Vodka, Amaro Montenegro, Cachaça, Grapefruit Juice, Lemon Juice, and Demerara. It was very refreshing for such a hot day. The Up & Up is a nice place if you want to stop by for a quick drink but definitely not where you want to spend the entire night or else you'll likely run up quite a tab. But overall, pretty cool experience.

Came here with a friend and was super impressed with the sophisticated interior and unique drinks! We came without a reservation and were able to be seated immediately, though it looked like we got lucky snagging the last couple tables. The highlight is definitely the ambience. It's dimly lit and not too loud, which makes it a great spot for a date or conversation with friends. Their cocktail menu is very expansive but also pricey at $19 per cocktail. My friend got a mocktail and it was also $19. I got the vodka-based one-star Yelp review and enjoyed it, but in hindsight I wish I tried one of their more creative options. We also split their cheese and charcuterie board (also $19). It was sort of an impulse add but we were both very happy with it and would get it again if we were to come back. The only thing that could've been better is if the manchego replaced with Brie or another soft cheese.

This is such a beautiful space. Kayla was a wonderful server and our drinks were really great!

Took about 5-10 minutes to get the drink but was a great bar. I had the Happy Trails and A trip to maine. I preferred the happy trails as I am a fan of Japanese Whisky. The ambience was nice and dimly lit perfect spot for a date.

The atmosphere is fantastic for date night! We enjoyed our drinks and asked for recommendations. The service was great we had a great time!

Really cool bar vibe downstairs. It's pretty cozy down here; hip and not pretentious at all. Drinks menu is really unique and the drinks are really well done here. Everyone here was cool from the service to the efficiency. Would definitely visit again when I'm back in this area.

Finally managed to secure a reservation for this pretty popular establishment First things first, the ambiance was great. Super chill laid back place with a decent since menu of signature drinks . Wonderful timely service with bartenders and waiters who are fully equipped to handle any questions you have or recommend something based on your likes. I had tried the screen door slam (was good) & the happy trails ( IT WAS DELICIOUS). The screen door slam reminded me more on the old fashion category (which I am a fan of) but the star of the show was the happy trails, more of a whiskey sour category but was incredibly delicious and to me seemed like a wonderful spring/summer drink. The only negative feedback I have is that the drinks are EXPENSIVE. $19 cocktails & they don't really use top notch liquor. I noticed most of their options were like any other bar with nothing really exotic to charge such step prices (just my opinion). If you want somewhere that isn't too loud, is darkly lit with a large cocktail selection, I would say it's worth the pop in. I would gladly visit the up & up again if I were in the area.

A solid spot to impress friends and family visiting from out of town. This is a speakeasy that is relatively easy to get a last minute reservation at and drinks are always reliable. Drinks could be more inventive elsewhere but you can't go wrong on a Saturday night. Hospitality is a plus!

Overall rating: 4.7 Very very intimate bar in the heart of west village. I sat at the bar with a few other solo folks and got a very early reso like around 6 or so. I liked the vibe, but I'm not sure if I'd be back solo or even with a friend. It's almost tooo dark. I'd definitely come back for a date if I'm trying to flex. Drinks felt a tad expensive but I understand. I bet it's a different atmosphere at night. Recommend giving it a try.

We stumbled upon this bar when we were in the area and needed to kill some time before going to the comedy cellar. Thank goodness we found it because it was everything we needed and more. Great ambiance, not too loud and the drinks were absolutely delicious. It's refreshing to find a cocktail bar that makes good cocktails and nothing too elaborate to the point where you question what you're actually drinking. The host was so nice as well. We didn't have a reservation and he did his best to accommodate us. And when we inevitably came back later that night with more people, he also was very accommodating despite it being much much busier at that point. Definitely will be a returning customer here.

The cocktails were very nice and the atmosphere was cozy with a "golden era" aesthetic. Not too long to be seated - even on New Years weekend! My only qualm is price for value. After one small drink, tax and tip, I find it hard to justify $25 for a drink that can be consumed in 3 sips. Regardless of how trendy the the restaurant or neighborhood is.

Had a great experience here! I appreciate any cocktail bar that allows reservations so you can plan ahead and not have to wait in line. Very cool atmosphere and the service was incredible. They kicked us out at the end of our reservation, but they were extremely considerate in letting us know they would be doing so and giving us heads up ahead of time (and I think they let us stay longer than normal anyway). The cocktail menu is the most diverse and adventurous I think I have ever seen in New York, and we enjoyed all three drinks we tried. The charcuterie board was nothing extraordinary but it was nice to have something to snack on and it wasn't too expensive. Olives are an additional $5 and they were a nice addition but not necessary. 10/10 recommend and will be returning!

Fiancé and I were in NYC for a 4-night vacation and we ended up visiting Up & Up for 3 of the 4 nights we were there. My fiancé loves this place, he said it's his favorite bar ever. I love the vibes and ambience but do not like the drink options here as much as I wanted to. We've tried more than half the menu by the our last visit here. If you love really strong drinks that are spirit forward, this would be the place for you. I love strong drinks but I don't love spirit forward drinks. I've had drinks here that tasted like straight mezcal but also have had drinks that are refreshing but too weak for my liking. The first 2 times we visited, we told the host we didn't have a reservation but they said they'd check to see if there's anything available at the moment. They were able to squeeze us in between reservations and we were able to have drinks for about 1.5-2 hours there each time which is great. The third time we made a reservation ahead of time and got seated right away. I recommend sitting at the bar because it's fun to watch the bartenders make drinks and they're really nice and friendly if you want to chit chat. We talked to a really nice bartender the second night and he gave us little samples of a cocktail we were wanting to try. What I love about this place is the ambience. It's dimly light, the music is not loud at all so it's perfect for a date so that you can talk. They refill your water very regularly so you stay hydrated and there's 2 bathrooms in the back that are very accessible. Overall I'd definitely go back even if the drinks are a hit or miss.

I highly suggest reservations if you are coming here on Friday or Saturday night, as I visited here and got lucky with my two friends on a Wednesday night. I opted with a drink called the one star yelp review, which was amazing and the backstory is hilarious. Our server Will was super nice and funny and as they have a cheese plate my cohort was beyond happy. The atmosphere is chill and booze forward, dim light underground to enjoy with friends or a first date (there actually was one going on that we "may" have people watched). Drinks are a little pricey but for the experience and how good the drinks and service was, it was well worth it. Again make reservations, as most will not luck out like we did.

We were seated at the bar. Inside, there isn't a lot of seating. It's dimly lit and dark - my ideal date vibe. I got 2 cocktails: Disco Volante and Insanely Good Midori Sour. I enjoyed both! The bartender was also so nice and recommended me those drinks based on what I told him I liked and didn't like. I would definitely come back!

Excellent place - brought coworkers to relax before an event. Service was spot on, drinks were perfect, and truly enjoyed our time together. We grabbed the last seats so expect it to be busy, but it's worth the wait. Very classy.

My wife and I came here on a Sunday late afternoon and had an awesome time. The drinks were exceptional, and had lots of really unique cocktails on the menu. Cool ambiance as well. I don't even like cocktail bars, and I had a great time here and would totally go back!

In an underground bar on MacDougal street, the up & up has a dark, swanky vibe. It is a historic establish (originally the Gaslight as seen in the Marvelous Mrs Maisel!), and the bar lives up to the hype! They only book out reservations 2 weeks in advance, and they are consistently booked, so you need to be a little diligent about getting a reservation, but it is worth it. The cocktail menu is pretty large with about 30 unique cocktails to choose from! With ingredients like balsamic vinegar, cayenne pepper, and black pepper, you're sure to get something interesting and delicious! We tried the "As Much as a Duck", the "Modern Lover", the "Promise of Adulthood", and an old fashioned. All of them were amazing. In particular, if you like a martini, then I highly recommend the Promise of Adulthood! We sat at the bar, and the bartender was super helpful! He helped us decipher the menu and recommended some of his favorites. It was also fun to see how the cocktails were made. This definitely added to the experience!

Place has a cooler more classic vibe. They use resy for reservations when you go up to wait. You can optionally just use resy beforehand. I didn't get a cocktail but tried the: CHEESE & CHARCUTERIE PLATE (4.25/5): This plate was delicious and we cleaned it out. The Manchego (cheese), Jamon (proscuitto), and the dried fruits and fancy nuts were very delicious. I'd get it again. The dried fruit and fancy nuts were surprisingly flavorful and tasty.

I visited around 5pm on a Sunday before dinner and was impressed with the vibe. Up & Up has everything to do with ambiance, low lighting, and an exclusive feeling being there. The service was outstanding, especially because of Leah and Chris. Cocktails are thoughtful and atypical. Totally worthwhile experience

The name of this place is a fun play on words - The Up & Up whereas the actual place is downstairs below street level. Not a true speakeasy but has speakeasy vibes. I am a huge fan of the ambiance. It's dim, quiet enough for talking, and the inside feels sleek/modern/vibey. Bar seating was great but the booths looked nice too. I think it's similar to Banzabar but bigger and dimmer with more of a sleek twist. Both Raines and Death & Co are darker - from a date perspective I would likely not recommend these for first dates. The Up & Up, however, is great for all occasions- 1st dates, many dates in, friends, etc. It's sleek romantic - you can be intimate if you want and canoodle but is also very appropriate for a nice conversation. I went on a Thursday around 11pm and no wait. FYI I didn't like their version of the espresso martini - was a tad too sweet so would not order again. The cucumber drink on the left was good.

My husband and I stopped by for a drink before our dinner reservation on a Wednesday around 5:15, and thankfully we didn't need a reservation (the doorman told us we had until 7:15 when those with reservations would start coming in). I typically like fruity but not too sweet, easy to drink vodka or rum-based cocktails so I was looking for something like that on the menu. I asked the server if I could get the Six Seeds with vodka instead of gin, as I was concerned about the 'piney' taste of gin, and he assured me it wasn't piney. I tried the Six Seeds as normal then with gin, and it was right up my alley! My husband ordered their version of a cosmopolitan, and we ordered a second round of Six Seeds because we both preferred it.

My husband and I took a trip to New York last month and we stayed in the Greenwich Village area. One of the nights we were there, we had a really late dinner reservation, so we needed somewhere to go beforehand. I spent a LOT of time looking at reviews for all of the bars in the area. I ended up picking The Up & Up, and I definitely made the right decision! The entrance to The Up & Up is pretty unassuming. Then you step inside and it is the loveliest, coziest cocktail bar. It is dimly lit with great lighting and pretty wallpaper. The menu is extensive, filled with cocktails that all sound amazing! The prices are average for the area. We ordered two rounds of drinks and they were delicious. Our waiter was kind and knowledgeable. He helped us choose drinks that we loved! I absolutely recommend The Up & Up, and I can't wait to visit next time we are in town!
