The Village Tavern

John is possibly the most immaculate bartender I have encountered in my 10 years in this city. No joke, he makes our night every time we come in. It’s hard coming into a city as a relatively “new” resident, and he made us feel welcome from day one. The red hair doesn’t hurt! Good bar, even better service.

As someone who very seldom writes reviews, I unbiasedly attest that they have one of the most underrated whisk(e)y selections plus most hospitable staff. Show Leah & Co plenty of love 🔥

Really disappointed by the feisty red-headed bartender - I live up the street on Leroy and used to frequent VT. My friend and I were bar hopping and she said she wanted to stop by VT since she's never been...we wanted a break from drinking, so we asked the bartender for two waters. He said, "Wait, you just want water?" We said, "Yes, can we get two waters?" Then he snapped at us, "If you're not drinking and you just want water then why are you here?" I told him that I just wanted to show my friend the place we weren't intending on staying long. And then I said, "Do we have to order alcohol?" Then he said, "You can get club sodas it's just $4"... I told him money wasn't an issue and that he's being difficult. My friend said, "Can we just get water?" He said, "No, you're being difficult." Lol is he okay? I've gotten alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at VT in the past - I've gotten water, too. If he was concerned with us using up bar space and sitting on the stools then he could have said, "bar seats are for paying customers - I'll grab you two water" but he didn't, instead he had an attitude and lacked professionalism....after much back and forth, he said "Fine. I'll get you two water, but ..." At that point we were disgusted and said forget it. In the 4 years that we've gone out in the city - we have NEVER experienced such rudeness. Mind you the bar was packed with people drinking...if you're concerned with money/tips then VT should include a 2 drink minimum bar policy or something for patrons....

12 out of 10 stars. One of my all-time fav places to go. The staff is great and the food is delicious

This is a gem. We arrived early. The bar man was lovely and very knowledgeable. The range of alcohol was brilliant. The music was lively and upbeat. We had a fab night meeting, lots of new people. Highly recommended 👌

Wow how have I missed this place 25 years plus living in NYC and frequenting Greenwich. The best bar, clean, great bartenders and gay clientele as well as straight. I felt welcome the moment I walked in.

Cool pub to stop by once in a while. It was super crowded when we got there but that didn’t deter us from getting drinks at the bar and seeing the games on their tvs. They don’t have a lot of drinks on tap, but the cider they had was really good. They also have a two drink minimum for credit cards.

I went to the Village Tavern to just grab a beer and chit chat. I like the dive bar mood with dim lights. The bartender Mary was friendly she was quirky and funny. It wasn't too busy but after a while it did get a little busy. The bartender was kind and offered us goldfish to accompany our drinks. We ordered draft beers and a rum and coke. 10/10 recommendation for a sports bar in SoHo.

I came here to watch a European Cup game recently. They do not have a kitchen but you may bring your own food or have it delivered. For a sports bar, the bartender pulled a good pint of Guinness and flatscreens aplenty means there isn't a bad spot in the house.

Love this place! Bartender Ciaran is so nice and helps us girls get a seat at the bar! It's definitely more of a college bar vibe but for those who graduated like 2+ years ago but it's my go to spot for a great pregame. Does get massively packed during college footballs nights so be aware it's really hard to walk through

Great spot. No food. But drinks are respective, bartenders are super friendly, and best, music choice js all yours for a menial fee. Shout out "sugar tits" (It's what I was told..). Great spot!

Hate go give a negative review but the shady happy hour billing from last night really put a sour taste in my mouth for this bar... I went last night with my friends and scanned the qr code menu on the table which said that there were $4 well drinks. (awesome!!) We ordered just before the happy hour ended and asked for whiskey well drinks (listed on the happy hour as $4 each) and the BT suggested doubles since happy hour was almost over. Fine, we ordered doubles but then it ended up being $9 for each single shot not $4. So our bill is that our drink is $18 each when we were expecting $8. I bring it up to the server and ask if she honored the happy hour price and she said "yeah? It's that price because it's a double" so I tell her that it isn't the price on the menu and she said the owner changed it in their pos system but hadn't changed the menu, and the happy hour price is actually $6. (But she charged us $9 still?!) Anyway she never came back to us and had already charged our card and it was busy so we left. It's super shady that they still have outdated menus on the table and don't have the listed prices anywhere and the bar tenders weren't really sure of the prices? Then later my roommate ordered a HH vodka drink and was only charged $6. So what is the truth here lol. The loud music and lack of seating for some mediocre and normal priced drinks also doesn't really add to the experience. :/

Unbelievable. My friends and I came in to watch Euros and a man walked into the bar, walked straight to us and told us we need to buy something or get out. The bar was packed with people who had yet to purchase something and he decided to single us out in front of everyone. He was aggressive and disrespectful we will not be returning.

My friends and I come here on Thursdays and Sundays for football. We usually sit and chat with Leah at the bar, whose warm energy always makes us feel welcome! Her passion for creating a positive environment sets her apart and has helped turn this place into our go-to spot! Nights here are UNFORGETTABLE - Thanks, Leah!! :)

I like this place for a casual drink, but they need to work on their drink recipes. I'm not one to complain about alcohol content, but my friends tequila sodas or gingerales were barely drinkable. Don't think I'll start my night out here again. These drinks taste like Poisin. 2 stars because usually I like this place

It's what it is, just another bar in the city. Local flavor people wise , seemed like a good crowd of neighborhood peeps, a little pricey to me, but hey it New York . So it's friendly, safe, good pours , and music. Not much more to say. If you Uber to the village , make sure you tell them the street. There is a "village taverna" a few blocks away.

i have been going to village tavern for years! my now home away from home! staff treats everyone like family and are so engaged in their customers. they are all so respectful and always looking out for their customers too. such great music and best place to watch sports - there are tv's everywhere! i recommend for a casual drink or a night out with friends. VT is the best !

It was raining so hard outside and the owner saw how wet I was and offered up the shirt off his back for me. True reminder that LOVE is LOVE! #NYCSTRONG

Went there on a Saturday night, crowded but had a good vibe... until you had to order a drink. There is a really creepy bartender working there. He was super touchy and would grab your hands/ arms/ shoulder as you order. I could see he was drinking and taking shots behind the bar. I asked him for another lime for my drink and instead of putting it in my drink, he put the lime between his lips and asked me to take it from his lips with my lips... when I said no he responded with "can you blame me for trying". He was also staring my friend down and kept mouthing the words "you're beautiful" to her and asking if she was married. Extremely inappropriate behavior that made all my friends uncomfortable and ultimately made us leave. Would be a cool bar if the bartender wasn't a creep!!

We went on a rainy Sunday afternoon and both enjoyed our meal. There is a waiter named Dominick who was not only attentive but very kind and helpful. Loved the chicken tenders and sweet potatoes fries. Love the ambience of old Town charm. A hidden treasure in Long Grove.

This spot is always packed on weekends and is a good time. I sat outside with a few friends on the sidewalk which is more my vibe. Crowd seems to be a lot of mid 20s or so but that might have been when I was there

Stopped by here for a quick drink after work on a Wednesday night. Dimly lit sports bar with plenty of seating available at the bar and the several tables strewn about. No food menu to speak of, but a full bar with cocktails, beers, and wine. Started off with a Dale's Pale Ale on draft ($8), then went for a KCBC Cryptocurrency in a can ($8). Vibe was chill throughout the night as the bartenders made chit chat with the regulars. With no happy hour (as far as I could tell) or food, this spot is simply your regular sport/dive bar. Fine enough spot if you don't want to deal with bigger crowds in neighboring bars.

We got there after a walk in west village, just had one round of drink to cool ourselves down. It was a typical sports bar, pretty chill, just few people since it's early afternoon. The bartender was such a happy chill lady, was singing and dancing around the bar followed the music video. There are arcade games and of course screens for sport matches.

This place was pretty good overall but the one thing that stuck out to me was the fact that after my whole table of 7 people had been drinking there for hours the staff came up to us threatening to kick us out if we didn't tip them more even though each drink we had been tipping. I've been to plenty of bars and the staff begging you for tips and/or threatening you for them is very unprofessional and does not make me want to come back here. They also held my card hostage with a ridiculous $20 minimum which in my opinion is insane for a bar and this place is not a restaurant. So if you are gonna go here get your checkbooks out and beware.

Just read the last 5 reviews or so and the two bad ones gave two stars because "the food was ok" (THEY DON'T SERVE FOOD) and because the other guy/gal ordered two shots to kill 5 minutes on a rainy day and didn't tip and the bartender gave them an attitude. BARTENDERS WORK OFF TIPS. I can't deal with stupidity or ignorance and neither can this bar. If your desired drink has less than two ingredients, you like a bar-ry atmosphere and want to drink in one of the greatest actual bars I've ever been to - this is your spot. Come here. Buy me a drink. If you want to sample a small batch bourbon that has to be snuck out of Williamsburg - stay in Williamsburg. Bring whatever food you want. Tacombi - Joes - Faiccos...all around the corner. This place is literally one of the last great remaining spots in the village and I actually don't want you to go so I have a better chance at getting a chair. If you do go, appreciate the fact that you're in a drinking bar and do what god intended you to do. Liver be damned, you won't be disappointed.

The service was lack luster if best! Bartender more interested in reading her book than paying any attention to customers. The atmosphere was dismal could be a better vibe with upbeat staff!

The worst DJ ever. Never played age appropriate songs and could not feel the room. Just not a bingo at all

Angry aggressive security, yelling and using profanity. Very unnecessary. Whoever owns this place should address this problem. I always enjoyed bringing groups of colleagues from work here, never again after tonight.

Started going post-COVID and they just take care of their customers in a conscientious and professional manner. The food is exactly what you expect from a lively sports bar. The TVs are always on something good, the drinks are good & strong and whoever is manning the fryer is a magician. I go while my dog gets groomed nearby. They do not rush me at all.

Now there is Buck Hunter in HD? And I can pay credit?! Look at this fancy, modern world we are living in. Other than that, this is a fairly generic, mediocre bar where I wouldn't order anything out of the ordinary (if I were you). The location is the sole reason they pull any business, but it will get surprisingly crowded by the wee hours of a weekend morning. I suppose they try and set themselves apart by allowing their bouncer to continuously smoke a cigar, ensuring they are the one bar in NYC that you can leave smelling like an ashtray.

Bitched us out for their machine taking our money and not working because it was broken. Then we tried their juke box (our mistake). Also took our money. When we asked if it was working or if our song would be played they all responded "we don't know". Loud bar, average beer, terrible service. It's New York.... not worth it.

**Please note, this is not an update of the staff or the bar itself, as they have remained a constant four to five stars. It is still a great place to watch a Mets game as they have a giant projector screen in addition to the several tv's. Wow. The clientele has changed here. Apparently now it's an extension of NYU, as it is filled with all white, overly-privileged children who cannot be bothered to pick up after themselves (ie: throw away their empty pizza boxes and other food garbage) and "dude brahs." Maybe it was an off day or something. Maybe it's not like this except when there's a World Cup match to watch. Maybe I'll have to come back on a random Tuesday after work*. Whatever the case may be, the children need to learn how to act like adults if they're going to live in this city. *They have Goose Island on tap! Score!!

They let way too many people inside. Came on a Saturday night and it was packed absolutely shoulder to shoulder. Nearly impossible to even move. The drinks were terrible, and it was crazy loud. I appreciated that they checked vaccine cards though, and the music was pretty good.

Jessie and Ciaran are the most lovely bartenders in the entire city. They are so friendly and pour supremely tasty tequila shots. They also can be persuaded to play Calgary Flames hockey games if you ask nicely (people love niche sports games). If you come here you will have the best night of your life guaranteed!!!

We came here for one drink during Loodle-palooza (our friend's bachelorette party). It was SUPER packed and no one shifted over when we just tried to place a quick drink order at the bar. As a group of 7 girls, we were immediately bombarded by dudes... one even went so far as to turn to his buddy and tell him "shes mine" in front of me... about me. Erm, huh? The girls all took shots of Fireball and I sipped some atrociously bad whiskey on the rocks... we changed into our 80's clothes and got the efff outta there. PS: the bathroom stalls were the size of a closet in a studio in Chinatown. And filthy. Lucky for us, the bouncer in the back let us change in the private back room instead of forcing us to do it in those stalls. Plus one star for those bouncers!

The pool table is gone! I guess a lot changes in four or five years! Fun place with fun music. Only downside (although it made for good people watching) were the college students who were there getting drunk on a Sunday evening. Good array of beers on tap. Pleasant bartender. I'd go back there for drinks.

Every time I come here I spend $20+ on the jukebox machine (well worth it), but their vodka sodas are on point and the crowd is always fun.

This is the epitome of a west village dive bar. Great for casual sports watching. The crowd is a mix of young and old and it could get crowded but it gives a great vibe of just chilling and slowly getting wasted from watching your team win or lose. The music is fun and the bartenders are nice, trying to get everyone drinks as soon as they can. They also have a good wide selection of beers. Fun times.

Came here for two shots. Was accidentally charged for 4 drinks. When I asked for the price to be corrected it was. I decided not to tip because two shots should be an easy sale. The girl working here screamed at me for not tipping. Trying to start an argument. I disengaged and walked to the door. It was raining and we had 5 minutes to kill. She asked the bouncer to kick us out. He seemed nice. We left voluntarily. Bar seemed nice. Question a place that makes a mistake and doesn't apologize, but instead acts aggressive. Service was definitely lacking!!!

Such a fun place to go out with friends! It wasn't very crowded at all when we went on a Friday night, but we were there with a large group so it was fun to be able to spread out and dance! The music was amazing, which can sometimes be iffy in a bar with a jukebox like here, but it worked out great and kept us all singing and dancing. Drinks are SO affordable especially for the area, and the bartenders were really nice and attentive!

Stopped by here with my volleyball team on Monday around 9pm for drinks to celebrate one of the girls' birthdays! Bartender was a bit cold, but friendly enough and served us prompty. It wasn't too packed, but we ordered a pie from Bleecker Pizza and brought it in which is clutch. They allow you to bring your own food since they don't serve their own, which is great!

Earlier in the evening: drunk dude falls to the ground and knocks over a chair that held my groups' coats and purses. Guy gets escorted out- security guy apologises, nbd- we are purposefully at a dumpy bar. This is to be expected. Hours later, once home, I notice my keys are missing. My bad, should have checked before leaving the bar. Figure they maybe fell out when the chair tipped over... I give Village Tavern a call. VT: "Village Tavern" Me: "Hi, have you guys found a set of keys tonight?" VT: "No" Me: "Could you take a look at the end of the bar, near the restroom?" VT: "can you, like, come in tomorrow or something? We're not responsible for your fkkking keys." Click. Is she wrong? Nope. Is the cross she's bearing heavier than mine, seeing as she works at a crumby dumpster bar full of basic 24 year olds? Probs. Does it take much to be a civil human being and say, "Hey, we're swamped. Your best bet is to swing by tomorrow to see if they've turned up." It does not. Fuck you, Village Tavern.

Divey looking sports bar in the West Village. Lots of young professionals here drinking on a Saturday afternoon. Bartender was super nice and friendly. It was empty towards the back where we sat and was a nice break from all the pre-mother's day crowd outside. Probably a lot of fun on Sundays during football season (or any other sports season). Will probably head back there if I'm in the neighborhood and looking for a quick drink.

Amazing bar but even better hot dogs! Some of the best bartenders in the city. Make sure to ask for the rum runner... it's fantastic!

Village Tavern reminds me of my college bar. It's a very bro-y crowd, especially on Thursdays. It's always very very crowded here, whether it's a Thursday or Saturday. (Which wouldn't be such a terrible thing if it weren't also so hot in here...on my most recent visit I found myself hanging out by the door in an attempt to catch a breeze.) Music is decent, although the throwbacks tend to be geared for those a few years older than me (I'm 22). Well drinks are decently-made and cost $7.50. Advice: come early with a group and nab one of the few tables.

Real texts from Sunday morning: Me : "What was the name of that bar we went to last night with all of the TVs and people and the guy that peed on us?" Her : "Village Tavern." Well done, Village Tavern. Well done. I guess not everything about Village Tavern should be thought of negatively just because one guy on one night decided he was going to relieve himself in the middle of a crowded bar while everyone stood by, transfixed by a Yankees game. To be fair, if it were not for the sprinkling sensation on my feet I would not have realized at all. But then there was also this venomous-tongued old man being ushered out for using a term not generally spoken north of the Mason-Dixon line. When a bar provides you with not one but two jaw-dropping examples of regressed human behavior, well, all you can do is shake your head and move on. A place that I have only been to once will forever be "the place I got peed on right before I heard the N word for the first time ever since I left Texas." Charming.

I really don't understand the appeal of this place...With all of the amazing nightlife NYC has to offer, why would anyone want to stand shoulder to shoulder, sipping boring beer in an overcrowded bar filled with frat boys who forgot college was over? I've been here a few times and tried to make the best of it, but never seem to enjoy myself.

Yuck! I have never seen so many blond girls or patagonia jackets. This place is a breeding ground for spoiled recent college grads with too much time and money. Perhaps the only redeeming part of it is the $4 PBR tallboys, but that hardly suffices. The place was JAM packed, and whenever I touched someone accidentally (because I was being jostled), I received dirty looks. Steer clear!

Really good beer choices and enthusiastic ambience . Much better than Dennehy's. I will return to the Tabern.

Possibly the worst bar experiences I've ever had: - rude wait staff - monumentally slow service (30 minutes to get menus, 20 minutes to take orders, 30 minutes for food to arrive, 30 minutes for check) - cold, hard fries - warm, flat beer (in $26 pitchers) I've never reviewed anywhere before, but this experience compelled me to action.

Old school bar, good selection of draft beers, back bar looked to have a good selection of spirits. No food. Stopped in mid-week about 7:00. Place was quiet. Maybe too old fashioned for the younger set. I was not all that impressed either. More of a dive bar than a sports bar. Four flatscreens behind the bar tuned to different sports channels. Some game consoles on the opposite wall. Beep Beep.

A good local bar ... great for catching a football game and having a beer. There are tables in the back for all the pool sharks ... just pass the miniscule bathrooms (I literally couldn't open the door when someone was standing at the sink washing their hands.) I don't need a bathroom attendant everyplace I frequent, but being able to get in and out is kind of important. There are quite a few large t.v.'s great for catching a game. A few high top tables, and I really do mean a few, so if you can't snag a seat at the bar it looks like you will be standing the entire time. It gets pretty crowded on a big game day, which can be both fun and a nusiance. Overall, I always enjoy myself, perhaps because of the company I am in, but, I am hard pressed to find a reason to stay away.

It was a strange little bar in the west village. Lots of TVs, that's not so strange. Lots of blondes... that IS strange... for New York anyway. New York doesn't do blondes, except for the over 45 set who figures blond is the best way to hide gray. But these were co-eds, clustered around each other, dancing, being talked to by the yuppish guys who you would expect to be at a sports bar. Weird crew. But we met some nice folks. A soccer team and some folks outside who said they'd show up next time. There was no food in the place, but they had a bunch of menus to order in. No prob! The bartender was nice.
