The 12 Best Canalside & Riverside Restaurants In London - London - The Infatuation

"This riverside pub sits on a pretty, leafy corner of Barnes, overlooking the river, and it also happens to make the best Sunday roast we’ve ever had—and yes, we’re including our mum’s in that. The lamb shoulder is a feast-like centrepiece of tender, perfectly cooked meat, best eaten between alternating bites of crispy roast potatoes and braised, garlicky greens." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak

Where To Eat When You're Visiting London - London - The Infatuation

"A classy pub that sits on the Thames in a leafy corner of Barnes, The Waterman’s Arms is worth a trip west for the finest Sunday roast we’ve had in London. Nothing feels more right than settling down here, ordering a few pints, and tearing away at tender lamb shoulder, a hunk of porchetta, or a whole spit-roast chicken with onion broth. Inside it’s all wood panelling and happy families bickering over the last roastie, before an inevitable order of chocolate mousse." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley

"There’s something that just feels right as soon as you enter this terrific Thames-side pub. Dating back to the 1850s, it’s got character to spare and a cosy atmosphere being heartily enjoyed by one and all – while the scent of fresh flowers on the tables combines with appetising aromas from the kitchen. Start with a snack, like the homemade Merguez sausage with labneh, before choosing one of the vibrantly flavoured main dishes, including a selection of steaks and fresh fish from the blackboard. The bright and attentive team are the icing on the cake." - Michelin Inspector

7 London Restaurants That Will Please The Whole Family - London - The Infatuation

"It doesn’t get much more wholesome than a big Sunday lunch at The Waterman’s Arms. Invite everyone, including those out-of-town cousins and their always-in-motion two-year-old and dogs, all the dogs. This riverside pub sits on a leafy corner of Barnes, and inside it’s all happy families ordering black velvets before the inevitable fight over the last roast potato breaks out. The feast-like lamb shoulder is the sharing roast to go for here. It’s a centrepiece of tender, perfectly cooked meat with herby, tangy mint sauce." - rianne shlebak

I needed somewhere to stay a few nights near the Docklands and this looked promising so went for it. Couldn't be happier! Lovely room - I got several great nights' sleep - and tasty breakfast options in the morning (which were included with the room). Staff friendly and attentive. Also had dinner here which was served quickly and delicious. Overall a great quirky boutiquey experience that's a cut above the usual chain hotels. Note that the pub closes 11pm so it may be a little noisy until 11.30pm. After that it's nice and peaceful with just the occasional car going past. Easy walk to Island Gardens DLR, a nice riverside park and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel (which takes you to Cutty Sark). I would not have ever visited the Isle of Dogs if I hadn't rather randomly chosen the Waterman's Arms and I'm glad I did.

Stopped by here for lunch on my usual Thames Path walk as saw great reviews and pub looked cosy. Food was bland, and extremely disappointing and rude service! Toilets are so dirty that it makes me wonder about hygiene in this place overall… I will avoid it in the future.

Great service from the staff and great location. There was a heat wave when we arrived, the rooms were hot! That’s why I gave 4 stars. Otherwise, everything else was great.

Disappointingly no gravy or yorkshire pudding on Sunday lunch. Apparently this is because it is a summer Sunday lunch. Yet the sign outside the pub says traditional Sunday lunch and has a picture of a jug of gravy. I think most people would prefer gravy and a yorkshire pud tbh. Couldn't fault the food other than that but a big mistake in my opinion.

🚇 Island Gardens 🍺 £6.50 Cruzcampo The Waterman’s Arms is located on the southeast corner of the Isle of Dogs in East London. The nearest station is Island Gardens on the DLR. Originally named the Newcastle Arms, the pub was built in 1853 as a dockers’ pub and was strategically situated adjacent to the Newcastle Draw Dock. The most celebrated chapter in the pub’s history began in the early 1960s, when writer and broadcaster Daniel Farson took over the establishment. He renamed it the Waterman’s Arms to reflect its riverside location and transformed it into a hub for live entertainment. The Waterman’s Arms became a popular location for film and television, serving as the backdrop for The Long Good Friday and The Professionals. The pub operated as The Great Eastern for a time before undergoing a refurbishment, after which the Waterman’s Arms name was reinstated. Today, the Waterman’s Arms is a contemporary split-level pub with a single bar and seven boutique hotel rooms. The bar features a wooden floor, mixed seating, a fireplace with a large mirror above, pastel and dark-painted walls, and an elongated servery. Black-and-white photos of Daniel Farson adorn the space, and the original stage remains—a nice touch. A beer garden sits to the side, perfect for warmer months. The beer lineup features familiar favourites, including one cask ale. I went for a Cruzcampo—great pint, though slightly above average in price. The food menu offers elevated pub classics: fish and chips is £14, Sunday roasts are available, and breakfast is served from 8am. We arrived at 11am on an overcast Saturday in October to a laidback atmosphere, with a few other punters already in. We were soon joined by @booze_house_tales and his good lady for a catch-up and a tour of the island. Service was friendly—the team member who served us was welcoming and courteous. We really enjoyed our visit—there’s something special about a pub with rich history and local folklore. Good beer, comfortable surroundings, and warm hospitality make it well worth a visit.” Follow @thewatermansarmscanarywharf for updates. 📅 12th October 2024 More London pub info on socials @londonpubmap 🍻

UPDATE 11.05.25: Waterman's Arms replied to my post saying they don't have pie on the menu, they are so useless they don't even know what's on their menu - the Sunday lunch menu clearly has 'Braised beef & Guinness pie, creamed potatoes' on there. Went in for lunch as dog friendly, was a bad idea. - Several menu items unavailable, despite being there before the main lunchtime rush - Despite the server asking twice if I wanted a half pint or pint (and me responding pint both times), a half pint turned up Unable to accommodate the simple request of swapping out mash for chips with the pie (the 2 staff looked at me like I'd asked for something extremely complicated) - Worst pie and chips I've ever had in my life, dog got most of the chewy steak pieces (to be fair the fish and chips my partner got wasn't too bad) - Cost over £40 for this unpleasant lunch experience Avoid unless just going in for a quick drink

Great atmosphere, food unbelievable, great staff. One of the best meals we’ve had. Highly recommend. Nick, Charlie and Sutton were amazing.

I came to this place to have a cosmopolitan cocktail. It wasn't on the menu, but the bartender didn't hesitate to make it for me. This guy's customer service is top-notch. Thanks!
