We came to the wild rabbit for two nights in February as a weekend getaway from London. This hotel has been such a pleasurable experience. All the staff have been kind and accommodating and we have no complaints about this place.
We took the train in from London which is just over an hour and a half. En route we called the hotel for directions from the station and they just responded that someone will be waiting at the station to pick us up upon arrival. How nice!
We checked in and went up to our room, the mouse room, which was a bit small but no complaints. Tea and homemade biscuits were waiting. Lots of other little amenities were also provided. Bathrobes, nespresso, fancy soaps, "rain" shower head just to name a few. The place is what one might call country chic.
On to dinner at the restaurant. The dining room was vast and open with a large table in the middle for service (also where the breakfast buffet was the following morning). Service was a bit slow but the food was excellent. We were told they were going for a Michelin star. I ordered the mallard which was tender breast meat with Brussels sprouts, a thick slice of ham "Lardo", some potato, and cone shaped wontons stuffed with mallard confit. Melt in your mouth for sure. My wife ordered the lamb which was equally as impressive. Also the waitress served us goats curd and parmigiana amuse buches. For dessert we ordered cheesecake which was no ordinary cheesecake- it was Apple base, cheese cake filling custard, hardened honey and apple sorbet. My description does not do it justice. Also received some Madeleines to finish the meal. I wish the wine by the glass menu wasn't so limited and there were minimal inexpensive options. The reasonable wines were not as good as the £5 sainsbury red we had in our room.
Breakfast in the morning, included in the room rate, was excellent as well. A spread of muesli, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, toast/croissants and fresh squeezed juices were available as well as any coffee drink you wanted. There was also a made to order menu included which I ordered the eggs Benedict on day one and the full English o day two. Both were well made with fresh meat and eggs. Lastly cheeses were available if you were still hungry. On day two they made us a second coffee drink to sit In front of the pub fire with.
We set out to do some tromping and were given wellies to use by the hotel. What a relief as I only had trainers. There were also bikes to use. A few good short and longer walks originate in king ham (more during the summer when things aren't flooded) so it further negates the need for a car.
For dinner on night two we were planning on trying another spot in town but we're just too cosy by the fire in the pub. After a pint for myself and a g&t for the wife, we decided to order off the menu. "Plaice goujons" (fancy fish fingers), lancashire hotpot (lamb and vegetables topped with potato) and chips accompanied a second g&t made with daylesford gin. The hotpot was filling although the fish fingers left a little to be desired for £12. In my opinion they could use a scotch egg and some simpler food like a burger or regular fish and chips on the menu. We spent the rest of the evening placing board games by the fire. The atmosphere in the whole place was cosy and warm with fireplaces all over.
We even spent the last hour on Sunday afternoon playing another board game. The staff brought us out more Madeleine's to bid us farewell. All I can say is that everyone was so friendly and looked to make our weekend as enjoyable as possible. Would love to spend more days at the wild rabbit.
