"Malena Lopez-Maggi, founder and owner of Berkeley’s the Xocolate Bar, first encountered the parable of the lobster while scrolling social media. Rather than molting its shell with ease and growing a new one as the seasons change, the crustacean swells and swells inside the same shell until the discomfort becomes too great — its shell pops off. Only then is the lobster able to really expand. “This is the Xocolate Bar,” Lopez-Maggi says. “We are the lobster. Compared to 10 years ago, we’re doing seven or eight times the volume. In the same building. We’re at a bursting point.”" - Paolo Bicchieri

The vegan selection is amazing and I love their drinkable chocolate. The last visit one of our boxes of bonbons tasted stale 🥲

Worked with the owner's dad YEARS ago when the store first opened. He told us all about the store and it sounded amazing... So amazing that it stayed in the back of my mind for nearly 2 decades. So when I found myself in Berkeley for the first time, I just HAD to go. And you know what? It was even better than anticipated and totally worth the wait! The 'arroz con leche' bar is probably the best sweet I've ever had! Do yourself a favor... stop by and pick one (some!) up for yourself.

Fantastic little chocolate shop. They used to make their own chocolates exclusively but now they retail fine chocolates from elsewhere. High quality chocolates, very friendly and helpful staff.

Hands-down, one of my favorite chocolate shops. Amazing variety that are made in store. The flavors are out of this world. Tamron mango, milk chocolate, praline, pecan bars, and Rocky Road dark chocolate bar are my favorite.

I am beyond happy to see The Xocolate Bar open on this side of Rockridge. In an instant, I felt transported back to my beautiful Paris with its quintessential shops and displays. The chocolates are beautifully presented, and the staff is just as sweet as its shop. This charming chocolate haven is a delightful addition to the neighborhood, and I can't wait to savor more of its delectable treats!

Super mediocre chocolate at beyond high end prices. The person who left the 2 star review 6 years ago is spot on. Really inferior quality chocolates at extortionate prices. Coating is way too thick, and waxy, exactly as described. Flavours read well but we're totally underwhelming, muted mango flavour, coconut was just like Bounty (do you have that in America?), and calamansi tasted nothing like it. Maybe even the wrong chocolate was in the box. Ube truffle was the best, and even that was only a 7/10. These are supermarket quality chocolates at bonkers prices (almost $4 per chocolate). Save your money and go buy something from Berkeley Bowl - they have a ginormous selection at perfectly reasonable prices. Service was very nice, was given a sample of their drinking chocolate, but that's more than factored in to the insane prices. If the chocolates here were 1/3 the price, I'd take no issue with them being mediocre, but the combination of price and quality is really offensive.

I love supporting local especially women owned business and I wanted to place an order for a party but had some questions. -they never responded to my emails -the number goes straight to hold music and then hangs up so I can’t talk to anyone -despite all this I made time to go into their shop, the only time I had was Monday when the shop opened. I stood outside for fifteen minutes watching someone work in the back but not open up until I gave up and walked up the street to another chocolate shop. I guess they just don’t want my money but I tried very hard to support and felt dumb after so many failed attempts.

While I have never actually been to the shop my boyfriend has been bringing me chocolates from here for several years. I love them so much that I thought it was time share my love & help you make the choice to go! The Buddha's are by far my favorite! (Just shared with my sister & said you can have any one but a Buddha) Just go, try, enjoy & share. You can never go wrong with these chocolates!
