On the Grid : Thumbs Up Diner

"Breakfast done right. Atlanta has a lot of great breakfast spots but this one has a unique family feel to it and the food is good, it is served fast, and it is served with a beautiful Southern charm that makes starting the day just that much better." - Steven Johnson Studio

Thumbs Up Diner has been a chill breakfast hangout for 20-plus years - Review - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"You’ll find all kinds of people at Thumbs Up Diner on Edgewood—retirees lingering over coffee and fluffy pancakes, film and music industry folks juggling calls between bites of steaming grits, and third shifters ending their workday with hefty breakfast skillets full of eggs and crispy potatoes. That mix of people is just empirical proof of this 20-plus-year-old diner's welcoming energy. The breakfast is reliably great, the service is friendly, and sitting here with sunlight streaming through the big windows just feels good. photo credit: Amy Sinclair photo credit: Amy Sinclair photo credit: Amy Sinclair Food Rundown photo credit: Amy Sinclair Fish & Grits Probably the most popular item here, the deep-fried catfish is crispy, well-seasoned, and thoroughly breaded. photo credit: Amy Sinclair The Skillet Heap This is the classic Thumbs Up order, massive and big enough to split. You get a hearty mound of tasty sauteed potatoes loaded with green peppers, onions, cheese, and two eggs, any style. Smoked Wings Nothing to write home about, but they’re not bad either. If you're in a wing mood (which is probably often for homegrown Atlantans), the three plump, well-seasoned wings are satisfying enough. photo credit: Amy Sinclair Pancake The pancakes are great. Moist, buttery, and the size of a big plate." - Jacinta Howard

Google
The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. French toast was soft, bacon was thick and the eggs were on point. Didn't feel good writing a review on the eggs and French toast so I ordered the shrimp and grits. I was pleasantly surprised. Wasn't overly seasoned and had a gumbo like taste to it. Scrimps were cooked to perfect and the ingredients tasted fresh. Lots of love in this cooking. And the coffee was good, not acidic at all.

Google
Catfish was fried to perfection and the breading was well seasoned. Really fantastic. The burger was flavorful. Overall high quality ingredients plus warm & welcoming service.

Google
The service was great! The food was great, the prices were reasonable and the food proportions were big. This was our first time coming, but we will definitely come back the next time we're in the area. Thanks for a great experience.

Google
If you're looking for good brunch in ATL without all the extra (dj, hookah, twerking), this is the spot! The food was excellent! The service was friendly too! We had a little bit of a wait because the place is kind of small, but it was well worth it!

Google
I was coming from a bad experience with another restaurant out of the area. So I didn't have my expectations up. Not too much parking sadly because it is a really good place to eat. Good prices for the food they serve. And flavor is very good. Huge hot chocolate that I loved and a great cup of coffee size! We were very satisfied with all. Definitely looking back if we go to the area. Close to the airport in suburban area. Like 8 minutes. It is great! Service could be better but no complain.

Google
Great food! Came for Brunch the weekend before Christmas. Long wait but well worth it! We sat at the bar and once seated service was quick and polite. I had catfish, cheese grits and scrambled eggs with a chocolate chip pancake that was great! Update: Because we had such a great experience last weekend we decided to return to Atlanta and come to the same spot for breakfast. This experience was awful. We waited over an hour to get sat and once we were sat in the restaurant we waited over an hour on our food. Apparently service is inconsistent as is the food quality/taste. We won’t return.

Google
This is a gem. They celebrated their 25th year (birthday) this year. It is home cooking in a cool diner. The servings are plentiful and delicious. It is easy to be a plate cleaner.

Google
Whoever seasoned the chicken on 3.8.25 deserves all the blessings. lol. Wasn’t bland at all. The waffles had a hint of sweetness, and the side order of potatoes were plentiful (didn’t include). This is my first time ordering. I definitely will be a returning customer. The only issue I had was the eggs was skimpy other than that five stars across the board.

Yelp
Thumbs up is a staple. We are here at least once a week. The food is delicious, however, the icing on the cake is the customer service.

Yelp
I came here with on a whim with my friend for breakfast on a Thursday. You can park in the back and they validate your parking for 3 hours. That's a plus! The food was good only thing the coffee was like warm I prefer my coffee a bit hotter. I'll definitely come back and yes I recommend!!

Yelp
It is with great disappointment that I write this review. I visited your Edgewood location on Saturday, 7/6, with a friend and had a positive experience with the food, prompting me to return on 7/7. However, during this second visit, while seated at the bar and placing our food order with our waitress, we observed a cook in the kitchen, who appeared to be of Latin descent, wiping her nose with her hand before donning gloves to handle food. Shockingly, she did not wash her hands after this act of poor hygiene. My guest and I were thoroughly disgusted and immediately informed our waitress, who also happened to be the manager on duty, about the issue. She agreed to address our concerns and spoke privately with the cook. Unfortunately, instead of resolving the matter professionally, the cook proceeded to loudly berate another kitchen staff member in front of us, including making disturbing remarks about tampering with our food. When I responded in Spanish, urging them not to tamper with my food, the reactions from the cook, the manager, and the new cook indicated their surprise that I understood them. The manager's apology, though offered, seemed somewhat dismissive and failed to address the seriousness of the situation. To make matters worse, after being instructed by the manager to leave the front kitchen area, the cook continued to yell at me from the back employee area. This entire experience left me deeply disgusted and embarrassed, especially since I had recommended your diner to my friend based on my initial positive experience. Threatening to spit in someone's food is utterly unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the hygiene and professionalism of your establishment. I am deeply troubled by this incident and feel compelled to warn potential guests about the health risks they may encounter. I intend to share my experience on various platforms and will report this matter to the BBB and the local health department. This is a serious issue that should not be taken lightly. Guests should not have to worry about their food being contaminated with saliva or germs due to the unprofessional conduct of your staff

Yelp
This place has been here for years! I love it ! I used to work off of Auburn Avenue and walk here for some spuds and a pancake at least once a week. This was approximately 10 years ago and they've been going strong for over a decade. This week I came in with a graduation party. We had a great server who accommodated all of our requests. So sorry I don't remember her name. My only issue is that my meal was pretty burned. I ordered one of those skillet scrambles that come with the spuds and eggs and a meat or veggie protein. I was starving so I started plowing through my food and as I swallowed thinking that it didn't really taste that great but I was hungry. I got the rest to go and when I got home and the excitement from graduation had worn off, I opened the box and saw how burned the potatoes were; not scorched but burned. It was by far the worst I have ever gotten here. But I will definitely be back and overall this is a great spot. I just got the bottom of the barrel for breakfast this day.

Yelp
Best brunch spot for years in the ATL! Staple in the community for us locals!! Fish and grits and sassy scramble will make you a fan!!!
google avatar

Dawn W.

Yelp
Orders the fish and eggs from Uber Eats. The fish was delicious which is why the rating is a two and not a one. When went to eat the eggs I found this long straight piece of hair. Definitely not a match for me or the delivery person. I put in an alert to no avail. This is the second time this has happened from this location in a month. I will not give them a third opportunity. Uber Eats needs to display the health ratings on the restaurants. They have lost a customer.
google avatar

Montell B.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for myself and my daughter for our weekend breakfast. I literally order the same thing each time. Catfish and eggs with a chicken sausage. Love this place !!
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Consistently good service experience, consistently good food and the specials are always some that you can try if you want to step out of your comfort zone/ "regular" order. Definitely will be ordering the rise and shine again. It is chicken sausage heavy and I have no complaints about it.
google avatar

Nino R.

Yelp
Huge portions and longer waits. But it's oh so worth it. We lucked out and found to seats at the bar. Service was fast and funny. Lots of unique and fun people working here. Good vibes. You can tell when people are happy. It's contagious. It was a great way the start the day. I'm glad we found this place. My gf will be frequent visitors whenever we're in town. Worth the wait...
google avatar

Alethia B.

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing. The customer service is great. The food is Outstanding! The Lou's Coffee/Hot Chocolate drink is to die for. I would definitely come back to this place. I ordered the Fish and Grits with Cream Cheese Eggs and I would truly order it again. The fish is Fried Catfish and I usually don't even eat everyone's Catfish. I definitely RECOMMEND!!!Also, ask for the waitress Kav. She is a wonderful person and will definitely take care of you.
google avatar

Demor'a B.

Yelp
I was able to get on the waiting list via Yelp which made the process much easier than signing up and waiting outside. When we arrived I went inside to check in, I was greeted upon entry and was advised that I would receive a text when the table was ready! We were able to park on the side of the building by scanning a QR code. Once I received a text we entered the restaurant and were seated immediately at that time I also received the QR code so that we could continue to receive free parking! The atmosphere was nice and cozy! The service was excellent, the food was fresh, tasty and plentiful! I would definitely return!
google avatar

Andy A.

Yelp
The service was kind and welcoming from the second we walked into the door. They managed the line very efficiently. We ended up sitting at the bar/countertop and we still got phenomenal service. We had breakfast pancakes and eggs and coffee. Everything tasted great. I would definitely go back again. This is definitely a good time diner.
google avatar

Joann B.

Yelp
Food is always good here, well prepared, generous portions and biscuits to die for. My only complaint is they don't tell you there's an up charge for any substitutions. You don't find out until you get the bill. Seems to me, they should tell you there are no substitutions without an additional charge. I ordered grilled pork chops plate. It came with a biscuit, scrambled eggs and grits. I asked to substitute the potatoes for the grits. There was no mention that there would be an extra $2.00 charge. If I had known, I would have ordered differently. Next time I will know. Have eaten there many times, just never looked at ticket until today. Lesson learned!
google avatar

Aliya B.

Yelp
Great food, love the Sedona omlette. Service and ambiance are just okay here. Love their homemade jam for the biscuits
google avatar

Pamela L.

Yelp
Decided to visit this gem on a mid Friday morning. The wait time was 15-20 minutes. The service was great and the food was bomb. The opted for Catfish and Grits. I mean it was so flavorful. The fish was seasoned to perfection. I also split French Toast with a friend. Definitely worth a try if your in the Atlanta area.
google avatar

Jeremy B.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Thumbs up. I always get the Catfish and Grits and it's always very good and a good value. Love the biscuits. The restaurant has a cool old diner feel. The service is always good for me. May not not be great for big groups. It's pretty small. Expect to wait, at least on weekends. It's near the Beltline. They will text you.
google avatar

Tonisha B.

Yelp
Everything was soooo good! The eggs were cooked perfectly, chicken seasoned to perfection and the potatoes *chefs kiss*! I love French toast and this was perfect. They had my meal labeled as the Toronto special for the day but you can certainly build your own. The staff was so friendly and hospitable and the playlist was nice. Keep up the good work. Everyone seemed happy and excited to be at work which is rare now days lol
google avatar

Simone H.

Yelp
I have not had thumbs up in well over a decade. Around college time this was the spot. Then the service and food fell off, and I found out with my own two eyes they were not using/cracking real eggs. They were using premade liquid box eggs for omelettes etc. I don't like that. They use to have these huge thick pecan pancakes that were really good, and one day I didn't like it. Anyway, I didn't feel like going out for breakfast this morning with the Mother's Day crowds, but wanted to eat something so I order French toast, smoked wings and a spinach mushroom side which was awful I was expecting something else. The wings were not that great but the French toast was pretty good, and they were opened early for delivery which I appreciate.
google avatar

Courtney M.

Yelp
Thumbs up is a great, no-frills, breakfast spot in the city. It's consistently good. I guess that's why it's always packed. I like that you can get non-traditional breakfast here like smoked wings, pork chop, catfish, etc. There's a small parking lot next to the establishment which is great for Edgewood. This restaurant is cash-only, so make sure you have some before you go, but they do have an ATM on site. Honestly, if they accepted cards it would've been 5 stars for me.

Christy T.

Yelp
We had the best time at Thumb's Up Diner for brunch. Our server was so friendly and attentive. He even kept my husband's coffee filled all. the. time. The food was delicious. The new love of my life is the low country heap. Thank you, TUD! We will be back soon!

Yelp
Best service and food. Comfortable dining. Hidden Gem... Chicken Sausage Fried Catfish Sassy Scramble

Yelp
I touched down in Atlanta this morning and came straight here with my partner who said, "you're in for a classic American diner experience with a twist." She was not lying! wow! The menu boasts a range of hearty, satisfying dishes perfect for a breakfast indulgence. Starting with the Fried Fish and Grits, a Southern staple done to perfection, or the Skillet Heap, a hearty and savory delight. We followed with a sweet tooth, the French Toast, not to be missed. And if you're feeling adventurous, the menu offers the flexibility to build your own breakfast plate or omelette, ensuring every bite is exactly to your liking. Each dish is a comforting reminder of why diners like Thumbs Up are cherished gems in the culinary landscape of America. A true Atlanta breakfast experience in every way
google avatar

Alan H.

Yelp
Best breakfast in Atlanta. Get the skillet heap and then thank me later. The service is amazing and it has a fun vibe to it. Go!
google avatar

Felicia Lisa C.

Yelp
Everything is fresh and amazing! Whenever I'm in the area I have to stop by for the awesome catfish, waffles and eggs.
google avatar

Jacqueline W.

Yelp
This my favorite spot. This is a no thrills only cash diner. The food is cooked with quality and integrity. EVERYTHING good. I've been several times. I always order Al carte, but my favorites include biscuit and chicken gravy, bacon and French toast, and the fried catfish. The biscuit is good by it self, but the gravy. Whew. It has chicken sausage, red peppers, onions, and other stuff I can't make out. It puts you in the mind of a seafood gravy but with sausage. The one biscuit and gravy is a meal in itself. The catfish has been fried perfect every time I've ordered. The pieces are reasonable sized. The breading is seasoned. Very nice. I do it up Witt a little mustard and hot sauce. The French toast is made with challah bread, so it a thick cut of light airy bread. I recommend adding the whip cream and fruit blend which includes (strawberries, blueberries, and bananas). This is pretty pricey at 7 dollars and syrup is an extra dollar. So I did roll my eyes at that. Not a cliche brunch spot in Atlanta, but it's good food, friendly people. It's an easy week day dine.
google avatar

Devin S.

Yelp
I'll definitely be back! I got the Sassy Scramble breakfast with an everything bagel. I usually only like smoked salmon when it's warm and this really did it for me. The service was great. Our server Jerry was very friendly and attentive. The scene is your standard diner but with some cool art. I'll definitely be back to try some more.
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
Great service and food. Have been going there for years and will keep coming back. Ambiance is urban.
google avatar

Anya S.

Yelp
Food was fantastic and quite reasonably priced! Not to mention it had actual maple syrup which is so hard to find at brunch places down here. I've lived in the south for almost 4 years now and the lack of real maple at brunch spots is one of the main reasons I don't eat breakfast food when I'm out! You can tell it's loved because there was definitely a considerable wait time to get in, but the experience is worth it! The servers were wonderful and accommodating and it was a great place to meet up with a friend for brunch! Also when I went in September I met one of my fave celebrities there so that was pretty cool too!
google avatar

Beth T.

Yelp
We visited here a couple of weeks ago and knew nothing about it before arriving. It was a Sunday morning and there was a waitlist. Since it was just us two, we arrived in just in time to sit at the bar (our favorite). The staff was on their game. I mean they knew how to keep that place hopping. Coffee was served in the widest mug! And staff kept it filled. We each ordered a different skillet and would order them again! And the biscuit was as a biscuit should be - ask for the homemade jam, I had peach and it was divine. After visiting, we learned that there are different locations, but I can't imagine they were as good as this place.
google avatar

Demetric L.

Yelp
I come to this place quite often and normally the food and service is stellar. Today I ordered the shrimp and grits and it was the worst. The shrimp were very chewy and my grits were like soup. The waitress asked if I were happy with the meal and I informed her that I wasn't. She then asked if I wanted to substitute, I replied no thank you. She took the place and threw it away. At this point, I'm thinking that she would remove the item from the bill since the food wasn't eaten. The manager told her to not remove the item since it wasn't the restaurants fault that I didn't like my food. The manager didn't even come over to talk to me to ask me about my experience. The waitress was phenomenal. The manager... horrible! I'm

Yelp
Thumbs Up Diner is deserving of the name. A staple in Atlanta for years, serving up some of the best breakfast and sandwiches in town. After reviewing the menu, decided to go with my own creation, building my own omelette. Starting with 3 eggs, sautéed spinach, mushrooms and spuds with finely chopped green peppers and onion. With a side of grits, multi grain toast and an ice cold Uptown, this meal was delicious. Light but filling. I finished the entire dish. The staff was courteous and attentive also. Very good. Thumbs Up! There is a parking in the back and spaces available on the street.

David C.

Yelp
Food, service, and ambiance all great! Love the French toast and spuds. I try to go here once/week.

Cassandra C.

Yelp
Never disappoints! Consistently great food and service. Plan ahead because the rest of th3 city knows this place hits every time too.
google avatar

Jontae P.

Yelp
Food was nice. I received My Meal in timely manner. I like the feel of the Area. The view was nice.
google avatar

Erin A.

Yelp
Good service and quick food! Considered a diner but the food is way better than regular diner food!
google avatar

Kassandra K.

Yelp
This was incredible. The fish was lightly battered and fried, nice and crispy. The shrimp was seasoned so well. And the egg scramble was so light and fluffy and tasty. I love how the coffee came in a really big mug/cup, it was fresh and yummy. Very nice staff, great service, and great classic diner vibes that diner lovers seek out.
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
Such a neat spot in East Atlanta! If you like GIANT PANCAKES then this is the place for you! Excellent coffee and reasonably priced!!!

Ruth I.

Yelp
I went twice, and I had great experiences, and then I took friends and the food was not as good. They were super busy, we asked for the hashbrowns to be extra crispy, and they were soggy. I love their simple diner style breakfast. I will definitely go back. I like sitting at the diner bar when I was by myself.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Great service, friendly staff, cool location, & great food. I had the smoked wings and waffles! The wings are not overly seasoned, just right and the combo of the smoked wings with the waffle is bussin! Confession.. I ate here last week and had to come back because the food was so good! The wife had the low country skillet. I tasted it and it was hittin as well. The chicken sausage was so good, we got one to go. Another place for me to frequent. See y'all next time. After going back a third time, I'll have to change my review a little. First of all. I got the special on the board on the wall to the right of the entry door (can't remember the name) but it was 2 smoked wings, 1 pork chop, eggs, potatoes or grits, & choice of biscuit or toast. I got the grits and a biscuit. The biscuit was ok, but the grits were bad & the pork chop was paper thin and very dry! And to top it off, it cost me $24.00! I think I'm gonna stop going for a while, or just stick with the smoked chicken and waffle. Gonna take a break from Thumbs up.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Fantastic food, service and great place to eat when in the area. Their chicken and waffles are some of the best I've ever had. Cash only, but not a big deal.
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a jit!!!! This is the best breakfast spot in Atlanta hands down!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Nefertiti W.

Yelp
Food was good but not run home tell your mom good. We waited over an hour and it was no better than a diner. It was decent just not OMG amazing
google avatar

Lacey J.

Yelp
THE CATFISH!!! If you don't order anything else, please order the catfish. I'm not a huge fan of catfish but Thumbs Up have the best I've come across. I love the metro diner vibe of the restaurant but please carry cash. They do not accept debit or credit cards. I love coming here for breakfast when in Atlanta. You can't go wrong with whatever you order!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
This is one of the top 5 lunches I have ever had in my life. You guys rock. Please keep up the great work!!
google avatar

Jamellia G.

Yelp
I went around 10am on a Sunday. Service was swift and good was savory. The staff are busy and the atmosphere is chill. It's a great place to eat at.
google avatar

DeRoyce R.

Yelp
The food was really good, definitely surpassed my expectations. As far as the menu there is so much to choose from but you can't go wrong. Our waitress was very nice and sweet. They don't accept cards, only cash which really isn't a big deal. The wait was about 30-40min. We did go on a Saturday around lunch time. When you walk in you have to sign in on an iPad then they will text you when your table is ready. You have 3 MINUTES from the time they text you to show up. Everyone in your party has to be present before you are seated. Parking was fairly easy along the street and surrounding businesses as well. I'll definitely be returning.
google avatar

Suzanne A.

Yelp
Enjoyed a nice breakfast at the Thumbs Up Diner. Great food, great service, and great company. Our server was a young gentleman who was perfectly attentive. We were sitting in the back corner so I wasn't sure if we were too out of sight but not the case at all. The restaurant has the diner feel which I love. No big expectation for perfection but very clean. There was a large party... maybe 10 people that were super loud. Thankfully they were on their way out so we only had to listen to them for about 15 minutes. Whew! The omelette was great. I love that I could order turkey bacon. It many places offer that. The french toast was great as well. On brioche bread (I think) ... I taste tested...I didn't order). So yummy. The bowl can with a potato base, meat and eggs on top. Definitely an enjoyable option since my son ate most of it you get a choice of toast or biscuit. I had coffee and my son had the other hot drink mentioned above; Otherwise waters ordered. The bill for the 4 of us was $60 including tip.
google avatar

Jimmy L. W.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot. The French toast is awesome. The place is cash only but they have an ATM. The basic breakfast of eggs, bacon and grits is freshly cooked and just dang good. The wait staff is prompt and really friendly. If you want a great breakfast meal , I highly recommend the Thumbs up Diner!!
google avatar

Lea M.

Yelp
Thumbs up for sure for this diner. The food was incredible and they know what they are doing! Yours truly got the fish and grits with 2 eggs over easy. Must places mess up my over easy eggs but they were just right My son ordered the Belgian waffle with bacon and he it I would make reservations online prior to coming to this location because the list is extremely long it seems every day‍ or at least everyday that I was in Atlanta. The 1st day I got there the wait was 2hrs and we left. The second day we may reservations then drive over and the wait was only 30mins thank goodness. That is pretty much the only thing that I disliked and the parking. But everything else was superb!

Ryan S.

Yelp
This was a great little dinner. The food was cheap and the service was great. Everyone enjoyed their quick meal! The pancakes here are a must. I highly recommend.
