Where to Eat Poke Around D.C. | Eater DC

"This colorful basement cafe in Dupont Circle offers Hawaiian twists on tacos with fillings like jerk chicken and Kailua pork. The shop sells three simple flavors of poke made with either salmon or ahi tuna. There’s a vegetarian bowl as well. Mix-ins are simple here, letting the seafood shine. That’s especially true with the “traditional” option (sweet onion, scallions, island spices, and salt)." - Travis Mitchell

Google
I most enjoyed the oyster mushroom taco and tofu taco. Friends recommend that I try this place for tacos, especially because they have diverse vegetarian options. I ordered the Chickpea, tofu, and oyster mushroom as a trio. Initially, I most liked the tofu taco because it had a great variation of textures, crispy tofu, soft tortilla, creamy sauce, etc. But, then the oyster mushroom grew on me. It was hard to get a distinct bite that didn't pull additional mushrooms out of the taco, but the flavor was great. I tried the Chickpea taco and wouldn't order it again. It was just okay and not as memorable as the tofu or mushroom tacos. The atmosphere is cozy and the vibes are good. Definitely a whole in-the-wall type of eatery, but with food that you'd come back for.

Google
We visited Tiki Taco because of the good Google reviews. First of all: the food is really good. We had extremely good tacos, a large portion of chicken wings and a vegetarian poke. Unfortunately, the ambience is not really great. The restaurant is located in the basement, accessible via a small staircase. It only has a few seats and no toilet. Our table (the only one for more than two people) was unfortunately very sticky, we had to clean it first.

Google
The concept of reinventing the taco with a Hawaiian twist is intriguing, but unfortunately, the execution falls short. The pork belly was overly salty, resembling the taste of spam rather than a well-balanced dish. The jerk chicken lacked any real jerk seasoning and didn’t taste particularly fresh. That said, service was fast, which was a plus. With some refinement in flavor and ingredient quality, this place could live up to its creative concept.

Google
A definitely hole in the wall gem. We got 2 trios and couldn’t complain about any of the 6 tacos. The salmon and coconut shrimp tacos were really good as was the jerk chicken and cheese stake. Potato mac salad was as expected- pretty good. The pineapple upside down cake at the end was very good. Most of the food felt like it was made and frozen, the manager did assure us that everything was made from scratch at the restaurant. There isn’t much place to sit if you are looking for a sit down but the Hawaiian tacos are still worth trying.

Google
Great food, and quite filling and not to expensive. I went with the Taco Salad the first time I went and the second time I got the trio burrito option. If you want some spicy sauce to, the owner makes house made sauce each day that can vary in spice. Great food and a decent price. A diamond in the rough.

Google
Some of the most bomb tacos I've ever had. Definitely treat yourself to the pork belly tacos, they've got some really good vegetarian/vegan options too. It's a tiny hole in the wall kind of place, so don't go in expecting fine dining or anything- just reasonably priced, damn good food. The guy working the front end was extremely nice too!

Google
Stumbled upon this delightful place and was so glad I went in as the owner of this small family business was super friendly and welcoming and the food was made with love and it was super delicious. I had a taco trio. Highly recommend this place next time you're visiting Washington DC.

Google
Tasty food from a fusion menu. Interesting mix of meat for the tacos. The taco trio is filling and the tacos are well filled. There’s chicken, salmon, kalbi, tofu, brisket when they have the special. More beverage options would be nice. We didn’t try the poke. The texture of the shave ice was pretty good, the lillikoi syrup was red and not really passion fruit tasting, but fine; my friend said the coconut was nice; they didn’t have any toppings for shave ice. There are a few tables with stool seating. Friendly and helpful staff.

Yelp
Ever since falling in love with proper Hawaiian poke a few years ago, I've been on the hunt for good (semi-) traditional Hawaiian food that doesn't come with a $1K plane ticket. Tiki Taco has absolutely filled this niche with their poke; unlike the poke we generally find on mainland US, their poke just has rice and fish. The hot, slightly sticky rice pairs perfectly with the huge chunks of cool salmon or tuna, flavored with a variety of mix-ins. I usually opt for their traditional blend, but it does err a touch salty, so I would recommend bringing a bottle of water with you or ordering their Hawaiian shaved ice to round out the meal. While I originally came to Tiki Taco for their poke, their namesake, the tacos, is just as exciting; they have a wide variety of tasty fusion tacos that are just absolutely massive. Each taco is probably a meal in and of itself, but each one is so amazing that it's impossible to stop at just one. I'm especially fond of their shrimp tacos, but you honestly can't go wrong with any of them. And if you have a sweet tooth, their malasadas (Hawaiian donuts) are a wonderful way to end the meal; they're fried to golden perfection, but are gloriously soft and pillowy on the inside. The donuts go perfectly with their rich dark chocolate sauce, which is decadent but not overly sweet. All in all, truly can't recommend this hole-in-the-wall spot enough! The food is simple yet delicious, and the staff is remarkably friendly and helpful! If you're craving a quick / easy bite or just want to experience a little bit of Hawaii, definitely recommend giving Tiki Taco a try!

Yelp
An unexpected find near Dupont Circle a short walkfrom the The O Museum. Easy to miss spot on the lower level. Don't blink! Fast and very very l casual with a counter and a few high tables. Service was quick and friendly for a mid-afternoon lunch. We were happy to see such a variety on the menu. Each taco was freshly prepared as we waited: Oyster Mushroom (special on the menu) Blackened Salmon Island Fish Jerk Chicken Coconut Shrimp The flavors were spot on. We took ours to go and the tacos were carefully packed. Resonably priced as well! They get 4 stars instead of 5 for the casual divey atmosphere but beyond that, highly recommended!

Yelp
We walked from our hotel looking for something to catch our eye that was unique with good reviews. We found Tiki Taco. It's literally a hole in the wall (well in a basement) with some indoor and outdoor dining. They had specials posted and a regular menu. They also serve shaved ice and it was warm enough to give that a try too. The shaved ice was good, typical. For dinner, I had the 2 handed taco with pork and chicken. The taco itself was flavorful and it was filled with meat. It was so good and I really enjoyed it! My husband enjoyed 3 tacos, and they were all good. His fave was the Kalua pork. At the table we also had a burrito and another set of 3 tacos. 4 STARS! Decent service, seating was good enough, and everything tasted good and was filling.

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink while pet-sitting for a friend. Service was quick and friendly. The environment is definitely fun and energetic, my drink, not so much. I ordered the El Silencio Mezcal margarita....it tastes like watered-down lemonade with a drop of Mezcal in it, so the name is appropriate. Welp, that did it for me - my day-drinking here has officially ended. Definitely won't be returning for drinks or otherwise, unless treated.

Yelp
I arrived last night (Thursday) around 6:30 PM, and the place was nearly empty. Right off the bat, it smelled like something had burned, which wasn't exactly inviting. There was only one person working, and unfortunately, he appeared to be sick--clearly dealing with cold or flu-like symptoms. I felt bad for him but was also uneasy about him handling food. I ordered the salmon poke bowl to-go, and the experience went downhill from there. When I got home and opened it, the portion was small, and the fish still had the grey part left on it--something that should have been trimmed off. On top of that, the entire dish was overly salted to the point of being inedible. I had to throw it out. The only redeeming aspect was the scoop of sticky rice, but that alone doesn't justify the $17 I spent. Overall, a disappointing experience. I won't be coming back.

Yelp
This is a very solid and creative taco place. The basement location is clean and basic, and the staff are ready with a recommendation if you need one. Stick to the tacos, which are great, especially the island fish and the crispy tofu. Definitely worth a visit for a quick bite!

Yelp
Solid taco spot with reasonable prices in DuPont. They have a whole selection of Hawaiian tacos along with dishes like Loco Moco and poke. I've only had the tacos, but I really enjoyed the carne asada tacos and the coconut shrimp one. The hot sauce they have has a small kick, but it's good for most people. Note that they have steak tacos and ground beef tacos too, so each beef taco is slightly different. The carne asada taco is classic with onion, salsa verde, and cilantro. The ground beef one comes with cheese and tomatoes (reminiscent of a healthier Taco Bell). Finally, the regular steak taco is steak with melted cheese and really thin fries. Personally I like the carne asada the best because it's the most complex. The jerk chicken taco was okay, but I preferred the coconut shrimp and the carne asada tacos the most. Service is pleasant and one of the owners, Ben, is really nice. It's a nice, casual little spot to grab some grub after a night of drinking or if you want to make a pit stop before continuing your other activities.

Yelp
Tiki Taco is in the basement of a very unassuming block near Dupont Circle. The stairs down into the shop are highlighted by a bright pink sign hanging from the railing. For those who can not navigate stairs, there is ample outdoor seating on the curb and an app to order online. The staff are really friendly. We started by sitting outside because it was pretty busy when we arrived, and there was limited indoor seating. We ordered online for pick up and moved inside when we saw other people leaving. Our food was ready, and we were served inside about 10 minutes after that...so maybe 20 minutes total for the food to be ready after we placed our order...which is pretty quick. The portions were very generous. We tried the tuna ceviche, and each ordered three tacos. We were stuffed. The taco flavors were delicous, and so was the tuna. Great small business, and they offer delivery through DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats. We would definitely come back. Thanks!

Yelp
good local find! i have been told as a californian that DC tacos weren't good but so happy to have been able to try this place. Inside gives humble vibes, they played really great music, and the food was incredibly yummy!!!! i got three tacos: pork belly, jerk chicken and coconut shrimp. The coconut shrimp was my fave, pork belly nice and tender, jerk chicken kind of tasted like kahlua pork but still yummy regardless. Will definitely visit again!

Yelp
This jerk chicken taco changed my life. We ordered that, the pork belly, coconut shrimp, and blackened fish tacos. I don't think you can go wrong here:)

Yelp
Reaffirming that the 5 star review still stands. Two years later, I still know I have a cheap under $20 meal in DuPont that I can hit and be instantly satisfied. The service is always so friendly and familiar, as if you're old friends, which makes it even better. Also, I can always manage to get my buddies to buy some shaved ice on a hot day when we walk by (this is a huge win for everyone involved)

Yelp
Friendly and good food. The chips are the best! They open at 3 pm currently, so you should know that.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday with my three kids after visiting a nearby museum. We picked this place based on other reviews and, well, tacos. One of the employees, maybe a manager, was standing outside the door when we walked up. He was super friendly and showed us to the menus so we could decide what to eat. The inside is smaller than I expected but cozy. We ordered and grabbed a table to wait for our food. It didn't take long and everything was really good. We tried the salmon poke bowl, taco rice with ground beef, and tacos including the island fish, jerk chicken, ground beef, blackened salmon and Kailua pork. Everything was delicious! The guy checked back on us which wasn't necessarily expected but always appreciated. I recommend this spot if you're in the DuPont Circle area.

Yelp
Always on the lookout for Mex around my hotel. I saw this sign and decided to head inside and take a look at the menu. The menu is more island fusion but not overwhelming. I decided on getting a taco trio to get a good idea of their style. I asked for the best 3 out of the 10 types of tacos listed. I was told there's no top 3 they're all good. So I decided on a kalua pork taco, kalbi taco and jerk chicken. The order was ready quick. I poured some extra salsa on and took it to go. The trio is a good size. Not too filling but very fulfilling!! Easily 5-6 big bites per taco. All tee meats were tender and juicy. Kalua pork had a good slaw. Kalbi had a sweet seaweed type slaw? Great balance of tastes for each taco. Corn tortillas make it extra good the salsa is spicy but so good. The only disappointment was that my stomach is not bigger for more tacos and also their other main attraction, shaved ice! Check them out!

Yelp
My 13 year old says "this is the best salmon poke I have ever had." She has had salmon poke in Hawaii and still ranks this higher. We live in the PNW and she ranks this salmon poke higher. The Caribbean chicken tacos and fish tacos my husband and I had were wonderful. The owner was fun and obviously takes pride in his restaurant. My teenager was talking about it for hours after. If you are in DuPont Circle and looking for poke or amazing tacos with a Hawaiian or Caribbean flair, please eat here. Do not skip the salmon poke bowl!

Yelp
We actually came to go to Sura right next store but their wait was like 2 hours long so we decided to give this place a shot and let me tell you sooo good!! Tacos were delicious (coconut shrimp our favorite) and poke was very fresh and they have a house made hot sauce that was killer! Also end your night with a shaved ice you won't regret it! 10/10 for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything worked. Delicious combination of flavors. Quality dishes, even the spicy ones. Good service.

Yelp
Having lived in DC for a few years, I was skeptical of this restaurant. A place that sells tacos, poke, and wings did not seem like a good bet. After finally giving this place a try, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Despite the dingy basement appearance, the poke was amazingly fresh and flavorful. The best poke I've had in DC (though the bar is pretty low). I only tried the fried chicken tacos, which were pretty good, as advertised. My girlfriend got the jerk blue cheese wings, which she enjoyed, nice melty cheese to contrast the jerk flavor, and the wings themselves were tender. Chips and queso were run of the mill, but still solid. Will definitely be coming back for the poke.

Yelp
Nice resturant. It kind of hidden underground but inside has a nice tropical vibe. I tried the island fish, cripsy sesame tofu, and blackend salmon tacos. I especially liked the island fish one. The blackend salmon was a bit salty and tofu taco was suprisingly good. I also tried their popular shaved Iced priced at 3 dollars and I've got to say it was just alright nothing special.
google avatar

Janna C.

Yelp
Stopped in here while walking to get some shaved ice on a hot summers day. It was pretty basic but it did the job. Very humbly priced and the guy working there was pretty nice. You can pick 2 flavors for your shaved ice. I tried mango and passion fruit and was happy with my choice. The place itself is pretty tiny and doesn't have a public restroom but seemed pretty clean for being a bit run down. I might not go out of my way to go here again but would definitely stop in if I find myself walking past there on another hot day.
google avatar

Tristan S.

Yelp
Me and my crew went here on a whim, and let me tell you after the day we had, this was a great way to end the evening. The place was kind of hidden, but we paid attention enough to find it. The service was great, and even after telling me not to forget my drink, the guy with a smile brought it out to me after I left it inside. The tacos hit the spot, and the weather permitted us to eat outside in cool comfort. If you're a fan of tacos and great service, do your Tuesday a good service and hit this place.
google avatar

Meghan L.

Yelp
Absolute "underground" GEM -- I am usually super wary of Asian fusion but this spot should have way more traffic. Good size tacos, so tasty, and a cute ambiance! Good causal spot to drop in with a friend or two.

Yelp
I got wind of this Hawaiian taco spot. Sounded unique, so, I headed out to see what they're hittin on. Customer Service wasn't great, but I still gave them a shot. LET'S GO!! . Where I am: @tikitacodc . Location Reviewed: 2010 P St., N.W. Washington D.C. . Menu Includes: Craft Tacos, Pokes (Hawaiian Ceviches), Burgers, Wings, Taco Rice, Quesadillas, Salads, Chips, Salsa, Guac, Beans n Rice, Key Lime Pie, Shaved Ice, & MORE!! . Items Reviewed: Wings-8 for $11.95 Lemon Pepper...DELICIOUS!! Fried hard, & lightly seasoned. Jerky Blue (a blend of Jerk sauce & bleu cheese)...DECENT. They were fried hard, but the seasoning didn't blend well. Spiced Pineapple (with chunks of pineapple, & carrots)...DECENT. They were ok, a little too sweetened with pineapple. Big Island BBQ...DELICIOUS. A sweet bbq sauce, crispy chicken...good. Their Jerk Chicken Quesadilla (with Pico de Gallo, & Sour Cream on a flour tortilla $11.50). DELICIOUS. Tasty, & meaty. Their Tacos-$3 for $12, 1 for $4.25. Their Blackened Salmon taco ($1.75 extra with baby greens, cilantro lime crema, & Pico de Gallo on a flour tortilla). STAMP!! Well done!! Their Coconut Shrimp ($1.50 extra with Mango Salsa, Cabbage, & Sweet Chili). LIKE THAT!! Crispy, & sweet. Their Kalbi Beef (with Sesame Watercress, Namul, & a Hoisin Crema). DECENT. You tasted each ingredient, it was different. Their Large Passionfruit, Guava Shaved Ice $5. STAMP!! Perfect for a hot day, & Scrumptious!! Their Pineapple Upside Down cake ($6). NAH. It was dry, & tasteless, just sweet. . Customer Service: I wasn't greeted when I walked in, but I preordered. I was recognized, as a reviewer then I got treated well. The actual eatery was a tad bit messy. I had to clear the outside tables off myself. . Online Navigation: Easy . Parking: Rough . Recommendations: The Salmon Taco & shaved ice. =STAMP =LIKE THAT =DELICIOUS =DECENT =PASS =NAH #Bigschlimsreviews

Yelp
We had 3 tacos here - jerk chicken, pork, and crispy tofu. The chicken taco was really good especially the crema that it came with. The queso and chips were okay but the chips were very salty so that wasn't as good. Overall it wasn't as good as expected but the prices and service are both very good, so good for a quick late night bite in DuPont.
google avatar

Randy L.

Yelp
Small inside, but plenty of seating with outside tables! The customer service was really great and friendly. I got the tiki taco trio: jerk chicken taco, coconut shrimp, and blackened salmon taco. I was a big fan of the blackened salmon-- had a great amount of seasoning and was well cooked. While the sauces on all the tacos were fantastic, it didn't make up for the jerk chicken and coconut shrimp tacos. Nothing particularly bad about them, but it wasn't flavorful and somewhat dry!
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
What a place. Approachable and friendly. The food is seasoned expertly. Every taco, loco moco, and even the quesadillas were delicious. The shaved ice fits the vibe. Lots of options with a serious shaved ice machine. This place is an absolute gem.
google avatar

Destiny E.

Yelp
Three stars because why would you ever give me a COLD side of gravy when I ask for extra gravy? Further, why does your hamburger steak taste like NADA. Why does your macaroni/potato salad taste like it came from Safeway and y'all just mixed it together? Loco moco was basic but fine - steak needed more seasoning. Guacamole had an addictive flavor. Picked it up. The place has a weird vibe, but this is DC.

Yelp
Wow ! My husband and I were visiting from out of town and we needed a quick bite and these tacos DID NOT disappoint. They were so flavorful and amazing we indulged in maybe 5 minutes because they were so good !

Yelp
Amazing tacos! The pork belly taco and one of the fish tacos were unbelievable! Ben was very friendly and engaging. Dive like ambiance making this experience low key and chill. Loved it here.

Yelp
Maluka's guacamole and tiki chips Taco trio with kalbi beef, jerk chicken, and island fish -- Make sure to check out the blackboard for seasonal tacos

Yelp
The tacos are truly incredible! I had the beef, tofu, and fried chicken. And all were amazing! I spoke with Brian who was awesome and super helpful! 11/10, would recommend!

Yelp
Tacos were ridiculously good. Great service, nice and fast. The poke bowl was top shelf. Get the steak and cheese taco.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow. These are the best non-Mexican tacos I've ever had. I had the Kalbi beef, blackened salmon and pork belly. The flavor balance on all three are very well thought out. All three had a perfect balance of sweet, salty, and acidity. The pork belly was unreal- the fat was rendered off perfectly, and there was a nice char on each piece of meat. For dessert, we had the fried donuts. They were light, not greasy at all. So impressed with this place.
google avatar

Nevaeh C.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time & It was great. My friend got a Jerk chicken taco, I tried hers & immediately went up and ordered me one. Which was the blackened salmon, that one was also delicious so it was only right to get another one which was the coconut shrimp taco. That was my favorite. The customer service was good, he gave us everything we needed. Also the shaved ice is good.
google avatar

Charles L.

Yelp
Good tacos and Hawaiian shave ice. Excellent service. The jerk chicken on flour taco was very good, had to order another one. The rice and beans looked good, but not super flavorful. Would definitely go back to try different tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
AMAAZINGG FOOD HANDS DOWN. Have had their Poke and Taco and it's absolutely mind blowing good. Definitely recommend the Kalbi Beef Taco, Kailua Pork Taco and Fried Chicken Tenderloin Taco!

Fiesta P.

Yelp
This food is not authentic. The cost is crazy and abysmal for the quality of food, it looks like something i could make in my backyard. If you want real mexican food please avoid this place.
google avatar

Angel W.

Yelp
Small restaurant with minimal seating but the food was very good. The food in the image was shared between two people and it was very filling we even ended up taking some to go. The tacos were delicious so I will definitely be back to try others and the service was fast.
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
I really liked the spin on traditional tacos. Cool atmosphere and really friendly staff.

Yelp
Came here on a trip to Washington DC today! Best food ever! Service is great! Atmosphere is so homey! This is definitely a must try!!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place. It's not that noticeable from the street but when you go in, it has a great vibe. They have a menu with a variety of options, including vegetarian options such as tofu, which is what I ordered. Ryan helped us out at register and he was great! I went in with a group of six, and we got our food quickly. We also ordered a bunch of icees, and they have a lot of different flavors which all sound delicious. Definitely want to go back!!
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
I really wanted this to be a place that I could give out 4 or 5 stars to, because the lion's share of reviews talk about it being excellent and I'm still in search of a taco place in the DMV that just blows me away -- sadly the only thing earning 5 stars was the service! I was disappointed with the chips & queso (I guess I'm not a fan of flour tortillas). I didn't spare a single bite of my tacos but none of them were reeling me in to buy more or come rushing back a week later! Don't let this review stop you from eating here if you're in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. For me, Tiki Taco is on my list of places to return to and give a second chance because I think there's potential for my mind to change based off different menu choices!
google avatar

Lindsay H.

Yelp
Intrigued by the interesting cuisine fusion and the vibrant restaurant colors, we stopped by Tiki Taco for dinner. The sitting area inside the restaurant is a bit small, however, they do have a large outdoor seating area available as well! We ordered the Loco Moco and the Ahi Tuna Shoyu Poke. The first thing I noticed upon receiving our order was that the rice was not well cooked. It was visibly and texturally dry. As rice is a staple and central component to a lot of Hawaiian dishes, I feel that is a crucial element that needs to be perfected. The Ahi Tuna was well seasoned and overall the best part of our meal. The Loco Moco had the same issue in regards to the rice and was essentially drowning in the brown gravy which made the dish hard to finish.
google avatar

Annie C.

Yelp
Staff were super nice and the food was delicious. My favorite was the shrimp taco! Definitely get the guac. I got a slushy but thought it was a bit bland.
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
Haven't had the food but it looks really good. I go for the shaved ice. It's simple and exactly as advertised. Not too many places in DC with shaved ice so it's a nice light treat.

Lillian K.

Yelp
Stopped here after a day at the zoo! It's only one stop from the zoo by metro and is worth it to stop by especially in the summer. Great vibes and the food was delicious! We got a trio taco to share and 2 snow cones and we'd get more if we had room. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Went for early dinner with my brother and dined in. A must-try for Washington, DC. Super colorful interior. Felt like we were transported to Hawaii. The tacos were amazingg!

Yelp
Awesome tacos! A new spot for me to pick up dinner when visiting DC. I loved the blackened salmon, coconut shrimp, island fish and jerk chicken. Though everyone suggests the pork belly and kalbi beef, they were not a hit for me. The beef was more like a thick piece of vieja ropa and the pork belly was fried a bit too long. However, I'll try it again next time I go just to be sure cause this place is that dam good!
