"This restaurant serves delicious Mediterranean cuisine which is often inspired by the fresh fish caught that day. The atmosphere here is informal, with friendly, welcoming staff, plus there’s an attractive sunny terrace for summer dining." - Michelin Inspector

Tmun Restaurant, culinary forward thinking in Gozo

"Rooted in a family legacy dating to 1987 and relocated to Mgarr Harbour in 2009, this MICHELIN-listed Gozo restaurant showcases chef Paul Buttigieg’s forward-thinking, sustainable fish cookery. He selects from the daily catch for filleting ease and commercial viability, balancing crowd-pleasers—sea bream and John Dory cooked whole on the barbecue, al cartoccio or in a salt crust—with underappreciated species: vopi and other bycatch enrich sauces and a hearty bouillabaisse-style soup; mackerel (kavalli) appears as ceviche, cold-cooked or hot with lightly charred skin; even less-loved cuttlefish parts become tortellini filling. Preferences are deftly managed—locals often get whole fish for freshness, tourists boneless fillets—while an Asian-inspired wreckfish dish and ambitions like house-made garum and katsuobushi signal constant experimentation. Though fish leads, there are meat options and four plant-based creations, and the broad wine list spans Malta, Gozo and the wider world. As one of only a handful of Gozo addresses in the MICHELIN Guide Malta since 2020, it serves as an ambassador for future-proof fishing without compromising pleasure." - The MICHELIN Guide

MICHELIN Guide Malta 2020 : Tmun, Gozo

"This family-owned Gozo gem earned a MICHELIN Plate in the first MICHELIN Guide Malta for "good cooking which has been carefully prepared." Set on Mġarr Harbour near the ferry terminal, the restaurant lives up to its name ("rudder") by serving the freshest fish and shellfish landed right outside. Owner Leli proudly presents the day’s catch and offers recommendations, then his son Paul—who nurtured a love of food from a young age, gained experience in kitchens abroad, and returned home—cooks it with finesse. The extensive, classic-leaning menu features spaghetti alle vongole, fish crudo, and a shareable bouillabaisse, with fish as the speciality—grilled, baked in salt, or baked in foil with olive oil and herbs—alongside local pork, lamb, chargrilled steaks, wholesome puddings, and homemade ice creams. Highlights for us included pristine sea urchin served on toast with a hint of garlic, a few flakes of chilli, and a creamy tomato sauce (three made the perfect portion on the owner’s advice), and a swordfish and red prawn crudo where the super-fresh swordfish melted in the mouth with a hot Szechuan edge while the sweet prawns were finely chopped with ginger, wasabi, and baked croutons. For dessert, Jane’s Cheesecake—named after Leli’s wife, with a classic cookie crumb base and light, sweet topping—lives up to its reputation as the signature. Choose the sun-drenched terrace overlooking brightly coloured boats bobbing on the fishing harbour or the immaculately kept, traditionally decorated dining room with the same view; a well-chosen list of local Maltese wines, friendly service, and a lively atmosphere make it a favourite with both tourists and locals." - Le Guide MICHELIN

The best, epitome of Malta visit. This was by far the best experience I had in my trip to Malta. Location is in Gozo island and there is only 1 franchise restaurant of this in Gozo, at the moment. We tried the tasting dish, as you are served different dishes to try out for yourselr and your partner. And it is said that both of you must like the same dish, which makes it extra fun. The tasting dish is served in 3 choices, 7 dishes, 9 dishes or 12 dishes. We went for the 9 dishes and I highly recommend it for you will feel the satisfaction. We chose 7 dishes from the menu, and each dishes were tantalisly delicious. They had unique blend of taste and fusion. For the remaining 2 choices, we went for desserts. And the apple tart with ice cream was delicious. Remember this is not just a regular restaurant, but this is a Michelin star restaurant. We managed to even speak with the head chef Paul, who was lovely, without him I wonder how the restaurant would thrive. Before the tasting meal begins, you are given a complimentary starter as appetiser. Water is not free here, you are encouraged to drink something. Staffs were very nice, they made sure your empty plates are cleared immediately, they attended to us ensuring if we were ok. I am not sure about the dress code, of course you will see smartly dressed people here, but it can't be helped if you had to come in shorts. This is a holiday trip after all. We came at night time around 8:30pm, though the outside seating was busy, the inside however was not. One toilet each for Men and Women, however there are waiting seats provided. If you have never tried a Michelin Star restaurant before, I highly encourage you to try Tmun Restaurant as your first. Comparing the prices to UK, this restaurant actually boast quite cheaper compared to other Michelin star restaurants in UK. A nice suprise was presented to us after requesting for our bill. I don't know if this is for every customers or just us, but I feel acknowledged and important in the restaurant. You can boast to your friends and family that you have visited a Michelin star restaurant. And try the 9 tasting menu dishes instead of 7. Is a good cheap price, however 9 dishes will satisfy. The last order for the tasting menu is 9pm evening time. For anyone visiting Malta or Gozo island, ensure you pay this restaurant a visit.

One of the best dining experiences we have had. A sharing tasting menu, something we have never seen before. We chose 7/9 dishes to be fish and every dish had completely different elements and were perfectly executed. The modern techniques and refined flavours reflect both the chefs current success and bright future he is destined to achieve.

Highly recommend this restaurant, we had the sharing menu of 9 plates and every single plate was brilliant. Our favourites being the tuna, (which was cooked to perfection) the catch of the day with the miso butter and the tuna tartare which really stood out. The chef came to talk to us after our meal which was a fantastic touch and the dessert to finish was the cherry on the top of a perfect dinner. We left full, happy and wanting to come back again. Great value and wonderful restaurant and staff.

What a great find! The staff were very helpful and fully explained what was involved with the sharing menu. We had a couple of starters and then had the 7 dish sharing option. It was all delicious especially the tuna and was more than enough. Good selection of wine at reasonable prices. I would suggest booking a table as it was quite busy but a very relaxed atmosphere. Would definitely eat here again!

The food at T'mun was astonishingly good. From the oysters and ceviche to the fish soup, sea bass and fish platter. Everything was so delicious and served so beautifully. One month later we are still talking about the fish soup and how to duplicate it. The setting on the harbor is lovely. This was the best meal we had in Malta/Gozo all week and we had some delicious meals. Worth the ferry trip from Valletta many times over.
