The 25 Best Restaurants In San Diego

"TNT has come a long way from slinging homemade pizzas out of a driveway (with donation-based pricing, to avoid silly things like code violations or business licenses). Now a bonafide storefront in the East Village, TNT offers slices that riff on Italian-American classics—like the Belucci, with vodka sauce, or the Eggplant Parm pizza—and the occasional left turn, like the Hot Sop, which pairs soppressata with dates. The old-school stained glass lamps and Street Fighter arcade game give it a vibe straight from the late ‘80s, but the appeal here is truly the pizza. Crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside, TNT nails every style they try, including Detroit, grandma, and New York. East Village’s TNT Pizza Is Expanding to Chula Vista and North Park - Eater San Diego

"A pizza pop-up that blossomed into a permanent East Village storefront in October 2021 is opening its second location in Chula Vista. TNT Pizza was founded by owner Kevin Gist and his wife, Jess, in their home kitchen during the pandemic when Gist, a 20-plus-year veteran of local pizza spots like Pizzeria Luigi, partnered up with Joseph Ghafouri Wehrly (formerly of Surfrider Pizza), to bake up Detroit-style pizzas with plus crusts topped with carmelized cheese and other innovative topping combinations." - Kelly Bone

Google
Hands down the best gluten-free Detroit style deep dish pizza I’ve ever had. Super quality ingredients and incredibly fresh! Love the ridiculous decor and 90s small town pizza shop vibe. One single Street Fighter arcade game and SouthPark playing on the tv gave all the nostalgic feels. Will be back asap.

Google
Decent slice. Not spectacular. Good smoky flavor on the tomato sauce. Fair price for a slice. 8 beers on tap. Friendly service. Worth a go.

Google
Service was good. So many vegan options by the slice. I should’ve gotten my pizza by the slice instead of getting a whole pie. I got the vegan buffalo gal Detroit. It was so good. Love the crust but it’s a lot thicker than I expected. Lots of carbs,🤣 The vegan ranch went perfectly well with it. Love that they have nutritional yeast shakers there for you to use.

Google
What can I say that others haven’t?! This place is freaking delicious 🤤 I had the margarita both regular and vegan just wanted to know if I was missing anything and to my amazement I was! Recommend this spot after a show at the Quartyard or on a stroll around town.

Patrick Tutka

Google
Deep dish gluten free that tastes amazing. Nothing More needs to be said if you are in the gluten free community! So yummy. My wife and son loved their regular NY pizza as well!

Google
3.5 stars. Got two slices of pep with vodka sauce and black pepper. Was a treat for sure never had that combo. I could tell that it was a miss when he puked the slices out maybe 3 minutes later. Annnnnnnd I was right, after the first slice the second was basically leftovers. Chewy and mostly cold. Didn't get a good vibe from the guy serving, don't get me wrong he wasn't rude in any way. The other thing is their pepper and cheese etc only had one each. Had to share with another customer. Maybe because it's in uhoused village? 4.25 a slice and they were huge. Heartburn later so I'll prolly not make the trek/parking/unhoused. PS they did have Street Fighter 2 arcade but I didn't play.

Google
Let me start by saying we absolutely love the vegan pizzas & ranch here. BUT yesterday was a disaster. We ordered 6 vegan slices & were so excited to grub! When my friend took HER FIRST BITE there were NOT ONE BUT TWO LONG HAIRS cooked into the slice. We both dry heaved with disgust. All they offered was to replace that one slice with another piece 😳 we had to ask them to MAKE A FRESH PIZZA first. We waited 20 minutes & then he just handed her one new slice. No offer of a discount, a refund, to replace the other 5 slices. The lack of customer service was quite appalling & makes me not want to eat here or suggest this place ever again. Do better TNT 😤

Google
Loved the pizza and staff but the loud heavy metal music, not my thing. I bet the staff liked the music. Will sit outside next time.

Yelp
Ordered this pizza as a last minute decision for a 40th birthday. I took their 4 recommendations of their top sellers, and it was a hit. The crust was thin and perfectly crispy, their ingredients well distributed and balanced. It was a hit, and all gone by the end of the night.

Yelp
This spot consistently hits all my wild pizza cravings - from the simple toppings to the creative adventures. I absolutely LOVE that there is an option to get single slices. For my simple toppings, I always ask for the hot honey (definitely get some napkins, or better yet eat there so you can wash up after). As a non ranch lover (comparatively) - I never pass up the ranch here. TNT Pizza is one of my favorite pizza joints. Fast, casual, and something for every taste. The perfect food to take to a picnic too!

Yelp
Amazing pizza! So far this has been the best pizza we've had in the San Diego area. The pizzas are huge, and reminds me of New York. I personally prefer the thin crust. My wife tried the deep dish the first time ordered and she also found that the thin is better. The service is great, and it's always ready on time.
google avatar

Yelp
Who would've thought a pickle pizza would be so delicious? I'm not a pickle fan, but my husband ordered a slice and I took a bite and loved it. The crust on the pickle pie was thinner, had seeds on it, and topped with dill and a cream sauce which blew my mind. The other Detroit style slices were more like Sicilian slices and too thick and bready. We also ordered a pepperoni round which was good. My overall rating is due to the cost (~$60 for a pie and 3 slices) and that the only thing that stood out was the dill slice. The guy working the counter was top notch though.

Yelp
Great thin crust pizza. We had half and half pizza. It was simply delicious, vegan pizza! Nice corner business establishment in Downtown San Diego; however, few homeless people hanging around.
google avatar

Yelp
If pregnancy cravings were a pizza, they'd be the pickle pie. The everything bagel seasoning on the crust is chef's kiss. So, so good.

Yelp
Delicious pizza in the easy village! They offer slices or whole pies. They have a pretty extensive menu of toppings and customizations! They have New York style pizza, Detroit style, and even vegan options! If you order a slice, they heat it up for you so it comes out piping hot and fresh. I tried the mushroom spinach slice with ricotta cheese and it had a perfectly crispy crust and the most savory umami toppings that worked so well together. For around $5, this was pure happiness! The place has this old school charm to it that transports you back to the 90s for a nostalgic vibe. Staff was very friendly and informative and efficient.

Yelp
Great speciality pizza! Feels like a nice local spot with a good dive feeling. The pizza was very good and service was great and friendly. I would go back for the pickle pizza which I'm usually not someone that goes for crazy toppings on a pizza but it was recommended by the man working the counter. I love how they have NY slices, Sicilian and grandma style so everyone will be happy.

Yelp
As a former New Yorker, I have high standards for pizza. Decided to try this spot as they have a variety of different pizza styles. You order at the counter and they have indoor (with tv to watch a game) and outdoor seating. You can order full pies or individual slices that are available. They also have two salads on the menu. I think a big draw for them is that they do vegan pizza. They had a decent number of different vegan slices available and they looked just as good as the regular slices. They have beer on tap and refillable fountain drinks for $2. The cashier was helpful in telling us what slices were in the glass cabinet and they were heat up quickly. I ordered the pepperoni vodka (ny style) and pepperoni Detroit style slices. Husband got a regular pepperoni, and tried the pickle slice. The verdict? Pizza was decent. The New York style crust had big air bubbles in the piece I got, so I didn't get much crust. I didn't taste the vodka sauce at all either, but it wasn't bad. The Detroit style pepperoni was off on the bread to toppings ratio for me, even after adding hot honey to it.

Yelp
Really great pizza. We for the buffalo chicken New York and it was delish! Can't wait to go back for the pickle pizza.
google avatar

Abbie N.

Yelp
We got 2 slices of vegan pizza for $10, not bad! We got the vegan margarita pizza was garlicky and cheesy. The Detroit pizza had a nice cheesy crust with tomato sauce and mushrooms, it was good. I wish they had more vegan pizza slice options on a Saturday. I was hoping to try the eggplant or pickle pizza.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
Woah, surprisingly better than I thought! They have 2 types of pizza: Detroit style or New York style. My mom and I ended up getting the Detroit style pizza by the slice. We ordered 4 types and it definitely was plenty of food. The focaccia like bread was perfectly soft and spongy. Generous amount of toppings. I ordered the pickle pie, corny peener, trifecta, and chicago. The corny peenr and Chicago were my faves. The pickle pie was very unique. It tasted like a focaccia bread with pickles lol. I was just curious to try it. All the pizza had a plenty of cheese! I even love the edge pieces cause of the melted cheese. $0.75 extra for ranch but it's worth it! Super friendly and fast service. A solid pizza joint to dine in at. Right across from Asa Bakery (go check it out).

Yelp
I generally go to The Quartyard for a cool activity. Food can get pricy so I get a nice slice here before going. AMBIANCE: Parking: Downtown so good luck. Generally all street parking. Seating: Inside and outside seating. Good for individuals or groups. Room for maybe about 30 people. Vibes: Downtown San Diego, you're close to some things here. Walking distance to Gaslamp District or the Padres Stadium with plenty of good activities and eateries. The spot itself is nice. It gives a divebar feel with the rock music and some arcade games in the back. Great place for a quick bite or a quick break. FOOD: Pepperoni Pizza - NY Style (Recommend) Deeelicious. The thinly slice dough which makes things super crispy such as the pepperoni. A nice balance of cheese and tomato sauce to make it all delightful. Pepperoni Pizza - Detroit Style (Recommend) Basically squared slice like a deep dish. 1 Inch think crust that's not too cheesy but more on the tomato sauce. What's nice about it is the garlic seasoning as if it's like a garlic bread pizza. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! Professional and friendly. You can tell they are working hard. TL; DR OVERALL: 4 Stars! I dig it. Reasonable prices, great selections, and a pleasant vibe. There are plenty of pizza spots but this one is solid. If you're in the area, be sure to check out TNT Pizza! TIPS: * You have a choice of making you own or selecting from the simple already made choices. * They got vegan cheese! * OG location

Yelp
We stopped into TNT pizza on a Saturday evening for a quick bite. The vibe was fun, with good music and an arcade game. The establishment looked clean and there was a decent amount of seating. The service was very friendly and fast, and I thought the prices were reasonable. We ordered three slices of pepperoni (not very adventurous) and they were huge and perfectly thin. Another person in our party ordered a slice of the pickle pizza, which was actually very good! My 3 year old son really liked the atmosphere and had fun playing around with the arcade game. I'd definitely recommend!
google avatar

Gaby J.

Yelp
Came here on a busy Saturday evening and ordered the pickle pizza, detroit style pizza and a grandma slice. I personally like my pizza savory and meaty so I preferred the Detroit style slice over the pickle pizza. Unfortunately, you can't order slices on the phone but great service in person and over the phone even when there was a line out the door. Parking: Street parking (we ended up leaving the blinkers on while picking up the pizza) Recommendation: I like their detroit style pizza. Avoid the pickle pizza unless you like the taste of pickles and ranch. It tasted too sour and fermented in my opinion. They got gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.

Yelp
Been here now two times and I love their pizza I'm lactose intolerant so I actually enjoyed their vegan pizza and legit think it was amazing Super fast service and really yummy thin crust pizza I definitely recommend getting two slices ! @neeks93

Ronnie G.

Yelp
Great pizza for all! Their vegan pizzas are just as bomb as the regular pies/slices. Goto spot for pizza in East Village! The staff are chill , humble people.
google avatar

Risto K.

Yelp
Pizza + Beer + Vegan Pizza = Happiness! That is the formula under which TNT operates. Located in East Village of San Diego, it relies mostly on foot traffic as parking here is impossible. You can make your own pizza or buy it by the slice. That goes for Vegan Pizza as well which is just fantastic. Crust wise, you can get your choice of New York style pizza, Detroit, Tavern or grandma! Beer choices are pretty good too. Service is prompt and they know what to offer. Interior is on a smaller side with only half a dozen tables, so lot of customers take to go orders! Probably best vegan pizza I ever had!!!
google avatar

Karla R.

Yelp
This place is awesome and if you're ever in the area, you HAVE to try the pickle pizza!! TNT Pizza is a cool spot in downtown with a variety of fun and unique pizzas. They're veggie/vegan friendly with some alternatives and better yet, some vegan pizzas are available in the "buy the slice" area! Okay, I gotta tell you about the pickle pizza. Sounds weird, right? Well, it is! But it's weird in a tasty, funky way Pickle pizza -- 10/10. Tangy, funky, unique and salty. You can get it New York or Detroit style. I liked it more in the Detroit version, myself. The crust is adorned with everything bagel seasoning and it makes for a fun send off of your slice :)
google avatar

Kalo K.

Yelp
I've given this place 5 star reviews before because of their pickle pizza but today they deserve to be downvoted to a 1 star. It's comic con weekend, there's hardly a line even but the case of pizzas for single slice is literally bare and slim Pickens. They said they won't put any more out any time soon. Not too good of service or preparation for a busy weekend are ya. They hardly have any choices in the case, see picture. They were suppose to be themed TMNT too but nope, they weren't. Super disappointed that they were super unprepared and were not able to accommodate its customers or provide good service.
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Great slice shop. They cover a lot of bases. NY style, Detroit style, grandma pies. They also do a great job doing vegan versions. Their pies are beautiful.
google avatar

Lindsay N.

Yelp
Quality and flavor went way down since the last time I visited. It's a bummer actually because I've been supporting tnt since they were a instagram thing that you order days before and pick up. I send so many people to tnt. The two slices I ordered were undercooked and soaked in grease. The pizza sauce tasted bitter and nothing like what I'm used to having all other times. I do think it's kinda stingy that you also have to pay for ranch. Either way, I paid $30 for 4 slices and a beer and feel ripped off.
google avatar

Zaydian A.

Yelp
Finally found a pizza place in San Diego that blew me away! They have so many unique pizza options but the one I would highly recommend is the pickle pizza grandma style. It comes with ranch, dill, garlic, everything bagel seasoning and of course pickles. Now I normally don't consider this a pizza, but never have I tried anything this delicious on a pizza. My only draw back for this place is the location (tough parking and homeless problem). That said the service is 10/10 and the inside had a nice pizza vibe to it. Would I go again? Absolutely!
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
Best Vegan pies in San Diego, wish they a have a location closer to Mission Valley one day
google avatar

Emma T.

Yelp
Came to San Diego for business and craving pizza within walking distance and I came across this gem. The restaurant was easy to find and the staff are nice and helpful with making recommendations based on what I was craving. I ordered the Detroit Style House Classic and it was so good! The crust is made where it' has a crunchy but soft on the inside. The cheese is on top of the crust and then the sauce and topping come after. I LOVE the flavor of the fennel sausage and mixed with the pepperoncini, it went together surprisingly well. I can't wait to return to San Diego. I will definitely return.
google avatar

Nick A.

Yelp
Where else can you find a pickle Detroit pizza? Casual seating with a few video games for the kids while you wait. Friendly staff always willing to make suggestions if you're overwhelmed by the large selection. Plenty of vegan options and pet friendly on the patio.
google avatar

Marlene K.

Yelp
Just one word needed to sum up my review: WOW! Vegan AND Gluten free pizza? Yes please. And also Deep Dish?!? How is that even possible?!?!? It's the ultimate unicorn of a pizza shop. So many options. We got the Pickle Pie. It was amazing, and creamy, and deep dish, and flavorful and everything I've always hoped for in a pizza. I didn't realize until looking at my pictures the next day that it said Soy Curls could be substituted. So that means practically any pizza can be made vegan. And deep dish vegan AND gluten free crust? Say whaaaat!?! The service was spot on, friendly, helpful and funny. They serve Boochcraft which will always make me happy, and it's got a great vibe inside. Stop reading and get there ASAP!
google avatar

Kim A.

Yelp
Pickle pizza was what i had and enjoyed it. Was happy to take a chance, was hungry. It did not disappoint. I couldn't do a whole pizza that was pickle but for sure will do slices agij in future.
google avatar

Sean S.

Yelp
Came in over the weekend for the first time and overall it was a great slice with an interesting atmosphere. The have a good variety of slices available in the case and they have Detroit and Grandma style in addition to NY so a lot of different things to try which is nice. I went with the standard NY cheese slice as is customary for me when I try a new spot to see how they do the basics. Their red sauce has a lot of flavor and the ratio to cheese was just right. The cook on the crust was also perfect and it wasn't very greasy either. I would definitely come back again and probably will try one of their specialty pies which there are a number of.

David L.

Yelp
I don't mind crispy crust but this is soo burnt and cold that I wasted my money. Given it was ordered as thin crust but come on. It was like you left a tombstone pizza in the oven 5 mins too long.
google avatar

Jonathan F.

Yelp
Stopped at TNT Pizza for a quick bite to eat and let me tell you this is some tasty pizza!! Very fresh very flavorful just perfect! We were kinda in a rush so we asked if it was possible to take somo whole pizzas that were in the display fresh out of the oven since it was opening time. The cashier was very kind and friendly by allowing us to do just that so we're in and out! The place was very clean and vibes had some nice positive vibes! Thanks TNT Pizza 10 out 10 on everything!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite and had a slice of their New York style cheese. The sauce was very tasty and flavorful. The crust was baked to perfection. Would definitely come back to try their Detroit and Grandma style slices.
google avatar

Lovepreet A.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza in and around SD. Closest to a classic NY slice as you'll get around here with that NY shop feel. Stop in, get a couple of slices and a soda! Service is phenomenal every time and keeps you coming back.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Visiting from DC and thinking about moving here. This place only solidified my plans. Some of the best NY style pizza I've ever tried. Only had one slice of the Green Dream with spinach mushroom ricotta and garlic. It's maybe the best white pizza I've eaten. The pickled garlic cloves were incredibly tasty and the crust was perfectly thin and crispy. 10/10. Plus some good beer options on tab. Enjoy!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
If you're a fan of pickles you need to try their pickle pie. Anything more than one slice would be a bit much for me as it is a very creamy slice, but if that's up your alley I think it'd change your life. The pickle pie was delicious as was the other New York style pizza we got. We also tried the Detroit style which was a bit heavy for my taste but the crunchy cheese on the crust was divine. I think I'm just partial to a good ol' New York slice though. :) Service has always been great when we've ordered from them and I can't wait to try more flavors. I also love that they have vegan options!
google avatar

Alyssa H.

Yelp
The pickle pizza is BOMB!!! I visited on a Sunday and ordered by the slice. Service was quick! TNT is a super casual spot with ample seating. Seating is a mix of booths and tables. You order at the counter and then seat yourself. TNT is a total hidden gem.
google avatar

Josh C.

Yelp
The best of the best. Multiple style pizzas, vegan friendly, wide selection of brewskis, classic pizza decor, AND they have Street Fighter 2. New York style, they got it. Detroit style, they got it. Grandma style, bring her too they got it. Detroit style slices I've eaten have thicker fluffy crust with crispy bottom and the cheese edges to die for. Toppings are fresh, unique, and changing pizza for the better, along with the classics that you can revert to. New York Style is what you order, thin, foldable, pronounced crust that holds the slice together.
google avatar

Priscella M.

Yelp
BEST PIZZA IN SAN DIEGO! It should be mandatory for every city / state to have a TNT Pizzeria in town ‍ I get the vegan slices every time with the vegan ranch! This is one of those places that you just cannot stop thinking about Also the ambiance is cool! And always good music. This place is in downtown San Diego, so don't mind the homeless. It is what it is. They're also no where near the pizza shop, but around the corner, sure. Who cares Customer service is fantastic as well!
google avatar

Marissa G.

Yelp
There was no line when I came in and was able to order pretty quickly at the front counter. Pizza by the slice with lots of topping choices and even vegan options. I was basic and ordered a pepperoni slice with ranch. Perfect amount of cheese. I noticed they had pickle pizza once I left and I will be going back to try it out!

S A.

Yelp
Amazing pizza! Our new go to pizza for sure. The fact that you get to choose a thin New York or thick ( Detroit style ) is awesome . We got Detroit style for the eggplant parm and man it was amazing! . They recommended to go with the thick for eggplant parm and glad we got that one! can't wait to come back to try other pizzas
google avatar

Yelp
TNT popped up in East Village just a couple years ago and has undoubtedly proven themselves to be one of the best in town. Whether you're a thin crust lover or a deep dish fanatic, they have it all! New York style, Detroit style, Grandma style, tavern style - either slices or whole pies, regular cheese or vegan cheese! The flavors are all great. My personal favorite is the eggplant parm, but you truly cannot go wrong here. The vegan cheese and pepperoni is some of the best I've ever had, not to mention the dairy free ranch - definitely a showstopper. Service is good and the workers are always helpful in pointing out which slices are vegan (typically the top shelf) and explaining which flavors they're currently offering. The place itself offers such a classic pizza shop vibe. No gimmicks here. Always worth the trip to East Village!
google avatar

Sandya N.

Yelp
A visit to TNT is like going to the pizza promised land. It's like being in the most awesome NY slice shop but then they have vegan options BY THE SLICE and suddenly I'm a complete imbecile who can't decide what to get because there are just too many wonderful looking options. I'm from NJ. I love pizza. I make my own pizza. I am always on the lookout for NY style slices and am usually left disappointed. I'm vegan too which adds another layer of complexity. Believe me when I tell you that TNT makes some of the most authentic NY style slices on the West coast. I've tried their Detroit style pizza and the Grandma style pies. Both are excellent. But I always come back to my roots and am happiest with the NY style slices. They have the perfect thin and crispy yet foldable crust, just the right slick of luscious sauce, and the ideal amount of toppings to crust ratio. How I wish I lived within walking distance so I could get a slice whenever my heart desires. The employees are super cool and friendly despite often looking overworked and slightly overwhelmed. The atmosphere oozes nostalgia, complete with the Pizza Hut style stained glass lampshades, the old school video game console, and the textured plastic water/soda glasses. All that's missing is the booth seating. The ordering and pricing isn't the most straightforward if you want to order a whole vegan pie at the shop due to the modifications, but they do have a "make it vegan" option for $2 more so that's a good start. In addition to vegan cheese (mozzarella and ricotta), they also have vegan sausage, vegan pepperoni, and oodles of vegetable options including some lesser seen toppings like corn and cherry peppers. Thanks TNT for showing us vegans the love! Can't wait to dig into another mouthwatering slice the next time I'm downtown.
google avatar

Ayham D.

Yelp
A good local spot if you need to satisfy a pizza craving- especially for Detroit style or any vegan pizza. But I was disappointed that they don't sell slices of vegan cheese pizza (you have to order the whole pie). The slices, vegan or not, are pretty expensive. I think I paid around $15 for these three slices. Now... service was friendly but confusing. I had called in prior to ask about the vegan cheese slices and only found out they don't sell them individually when I got there. Hate to sound difficult but I had high hopes that this could be my new slice shop, and it is simply too expensive and doesn't have the right offerings for me to keep coming back.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
So glad we picked up pizza from here! After looking up spots with vegan options we picked this one because I have been craving a vegan version of Buffalo chicken. The flavors were so rich and New York pizza was huge for the two of us. Service was fast but we did call ahead. Looking forward to coming back and trying some Detroit pizzas. Almost if not all pizzas can be made vegan on request and don't have that daiya sticky cheese vibe to them. Thanks again TNT
google avatar

Cara B.

Yelp
Some of the BEST pizza crust i've ever had. It's sourdough based and so flavorful. Get the grandma style eggplant parm if you like eggplant.. it's such a unique combination and well executed. The pickle pizza's everything bagel crust was also insane. HIGHLY recommend!! The workers are also extremely nice and attentive.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Pizza was fantastic. Jill, was absolutely wonderful. She ran the whole show by her self and made it look so easy! Flawlessly. Jill- idk what they pay you, but you deserve a raise! Highly recommend, I hope Jill is there for everyone else's future experiences. If you are GF you have to order a whole pie, it is not available by the slice. (At least on Friday at 9pm) Street situation is a bit sketch but the place has a lovely gated outdoor seating area! 10/10 will recommend

Yelp
The pickle pizza is delicious with the hot honey. Would recommend if you like thicker crusts. Also try eating it fresh as it does get soggy, but putting your leftovers in the airfryer is still just as good!

Yelp
Bellucci Pizza with Mushrooms and Jalapeños Perfect comfort food for a casual night in. Thick pan, cheesy, lots of pepperoni, and wonderfully spicy. Usually the crust is doughier, but this time it was a little cheesier, which tasted alright too.
