Modest Chinese dim sum shop under a train trestle, known for its soup dumplings.
"At this longtime dim sum spot, the crab soup dumplings are well-seasoned and spicy, and the skins stay slightly chewy. And since the place is located near Reading Terminal Market, you can grab a cannoli Termini Brothers after lunch, and head back to the couch for the rest of the day." - candis mclean
"Tom’s is run by the same team as Dim Sum Garden and feels almost like a carbon copy of the place. Of the 40-ish items on the menu, we always stick with the vegetable steam buns with a soft exterior and mustard green filling, spicy pork soup dumplings, and beef skewers. Since this restaurant is next to Reading Terminal Market, the crowd tends to be lively and, more often than not, heading to a Big Red Bus tour. Tom's doesn't take reservations, but you can book their back room if you have a group that needs extra space for moon-shaped dumplings and BYOB wine." - candis mclean
"Tom’s has a long menu of things we like, including their dumplings, rice plates, and pan-fried vegetables. And unlike Dim Sum Garden, they don’t have the $15 corkage fee for bringing in booze. That means the crowds here tend to be younger and a bit rowdier than at Dim Sum Garden. They don’t take reservations, but if you have a big enough group that needs extra space for shout-talking, you can reserve their back room." - Candis Mclean, Alison Kessler
"Stop: Jefferson Station (Market-Frankford Line) We’d normally suggest going to Dim Sum Garden for the best soup dumplings in the city, but the ones at Tom’s Dim Sum are a whole block and a half closer and almost just as good. This spot in Chinatown serves classic dim sum dishes, like scallion pancakes, pork buns, and shrimp shumai, and the food comes out so fast that you’ll start warming up immediately." - Sydney Mcelwee
"For a long time, Dim Sum Garden was the preferred dim sum spot for college students to get tipsy. However, as soon as they started charging a $15 corkage fee, all the kids figured out that they could take their backpacks full of cheap beer down the street to Tom’s. Almost a carbon copy of Dim Sum Garden, Tom's has a long menu of things like dumplings, rice plates, and pan-fried vegetables. They don’t generally take reservations, but if you have a big enough group you can reserve their back room." - Sydney McElwee
