The Best Restaurants on Arthur Avenue, the Little Italy of the Bronx | Eater NY

"This longtime pizzeria has been leaning more into its Albanian heritage, now advertising itself as a source for burek and yogurt. Both the meat and the spinach and cheese pies are great, but for something a little harder-to-find, give the pumpkin-filled version of the pastry a whirl. Find baklava here, too." - Missy Frederick

Where to Eat on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx - Eater NY

"The pizza here is quite good, but turn instead to the bureks, flaky Balkan pies cooked in the same stacked ovens as the pizzas. The best filling and one rarely found in the five boroughs is pumpkin, though the spinach, ground meat, and cheese pies are almost as good. Buy a cup of homemade yogurt for dipping." - Robert Sietsema

Google
We happened to be in the area running an errand and walked into this place. My husband got a chicken ranch pizza. Of course I had a bite and it was amazing! But since it was my first ever eating on Arthur Ave. I figured why not walk around and see what else is there else. I grab a sweet fried dough dessert (I will update with the name) and then we left. I ended coming back because the other pizza spot we tried was horrible. I felt really awful but glad I could pop back here. The staff is friendly and chatted us up a bit which helped cheer me up. I got a white slice that was Amazing. I definitely recommend this place and will pay a visit next time we're in the area.

I came today after years wanting to try this place...service was great,I just wish they really welcome us with a smile...other than that they both did great job! We tried their desserts first...tulumbe ...hm ...they need to be more airy, fluffy and crispy edges outside...not too sweet which is super common for tulumbe...but I didn't mind that...the syrup should be more thicker and lemon zest taste...bakalava is ok,!..I hesitate to buy it after trying tulumbe but they looked so promising ..I ordered 3 whole bureks to go and yogurts..yogurts are nicely made, whatever reminds me on my home I would give a thumbs up..they were probably day or two old but still good!!! And burek is definitely made with a nice technique...usually dough is thinner but I loved it ...super crispy and nicely made...meat,not so original recipe..not a lot of onion and black pepper..and meat was yummy but didn't bring me home...spinach was so so and cheese one is definitely not a favorite one...a lot of ricotta cheese or maybe a variety of home made cheese spread...needs a good feta...but so far the best of I tried so far....not too greasy which burek is remarkable...I didn't mind that....many people didn't achieve how to make dough for burek, this one was great...I would recommend this place and I would come back!!

Google
Went out for lunch in Arthur Ave and decided to visit this place ,i loved that they had lots of options other then Burek (which btw is delicious and for sure best Burek in New York) .I decided to try their NYPD Sandwich and it was delicious and of course i had to take a Burek Pie to go.

Google
Pumpkin burek is my favorite. I had their Fettuccine Alfredo too. Delicious. Been coming here for years now. Glad to see they expanded their menu.

Google
I had the spinach and pumpkin Bureks..they were off-scale delicious. Can't wait to come back.

Google
Had a great experience at Tony & Tina’s. Our family tried the spinach, cheese & meat burek. All very good but my favorite was the meat one! Good price for the size. Only place I’ll come that’ll remind me of being back in Albania. Don’t forget to get the yogurt with it.

Google
I have tried burek in other places but never really tried spinach burek before and I'm glad I tried it here because it was amazing....since now that's my new favorite burek flavor 😋 pizza was also good really good ...overall good spot for burek and pizza and they open until like 3am.

Google
I live in Texas it was a literal dream come true to visit this place. I took my whole family here, 2 of them live in NY and had never been there. Now my aunt is telling everyone about this place (coworkers, other family living in NY). Everyone left super satisfied and you better believe I brought 5 pieces with me to Houston! Too bad I didn’t get a chance to meet Filyp, I wanted to take a video for my review but the guys working there were awesome too. I feel like even in Albania is rare to find this kind of byrek. Albanian or not, this place is amazing! Make sure to order some dhalle too (yoghurt drink)!

Yelp
First time review but I wanted to taste what a Burek really is and know this IS the place to go for that. So while shopping on Arthur Ave for Easter dinner stopped here and had a slice. It always just looked like pizza dough filled with stuff as you can find in many pizzerias. But burek is very different - they say made with filo but this is the real filo - not the paper crap they sell in stores. I've never had anything like this. The dough has lots of flavor and interesting texture. And the cheese and greens filling ( seemed like leeks and onion, maybe some dill) was fantastic. And nice and neat to eat as they make these very well and tight. Will be trying others soon. Not a fancy place by a long shot but well worth it.

Yelp
I don't understand why the reviews aren't higher, this place is the bomb.com.org.edu.gov. The bureks are fantastic - we literally drove from Brooklyn to get here - and it was worth every minute of the long drive. We got the meat, spinach, and cheese bureks. They were all fantastic but I think the meat one was my favorite. The service is friendly and you can tell this spot is genuinely authentic. It's a small spot with just a few tables but enough space to eat inside. Very old school. And fyi the folks here are Albanian! So it's a nice mix up from the Italian in the area.

Yelp
Spinach and cheese burk was super delicious and flaky. Warmed up super well. Baklava was pretty good as well. The yogurt was very tart and thick. All the food was only $21

Yelp

Yelp
This is a Burek shop and it rocks. It's been in Belmont little Italy for a very long time. My favorite Burek is the cheese. Staff was professional and friendly and the restaurant is clean . I also tried the homemade yogurt which has become an excellent addition.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped coming to Tony and Tina's years ago. They definitely changed for the better and would recommend strongly. The bureks are not thin and not shy with their fillings!!! In addition they have the traditional Fli and Baklava/Tulumba. The staff are friendly and welcoming; establishment is clean and limited seating.

Yelp
As a fellow country men ( Serbian ) , I really appreciate this home town food , The best Burek in New York a must try and wash it down w/ the homemade yogurt !! , my favorite is the spinach & cheese , but don't be shy try all 3 you will not be disappointed , I was in Belgrade last year after 41yrs and tried 3 different places and this Burek is equal quality,, I'm so happy to have found Tony & Tina's ,, GREAT JOB GUYS ,, Gjitha te mirat !!!!

Yelp
Delicious Burek and Pizza was surprisingly good. The owner is really nice and the staff members are always welcoming

Yelp
Only in NY does an Albanian börek shop seamlessly take over an old pizza place as the neighborhood undergoes a parallel demographic shift. I didn't have room for ayran on this visit, but few dishes could have hit the spot more on a cold winter day than this infinitely soft yet flaky slice of white cheese pie.

Gezim S.

Yelp
very bad food very bad service. Very bad personality now he start to put in social media because he know he's going to lose his business. His parents was very respectful but I'm sorry to say that his arrogant person.

Yelp
I walked in there to try some of their burek...I probably won't go back. The place was clean and the guys that were there were nice enough for decent service but they looked like they were about to close. The food that was on display looked like it had been sitting there for weeks. I ordered 2 baklavas (I even got this begrudgingly) and left. When I tasted them, I was disappointed. No flavor. Even the syrup was flavorless. I really had high hopes for here.

Yelp
I went to this place because the IG post kept popping up in my feed and the Burek looked so good and I love Burek. So I took the one hour trip from SI to Bronx. I get there and ordered a fresh spinach Burek, the girl says we don't have anymore. It was 5pm. She said what we have left on display only and it's fresh. She said 25 minutes for a fresh cheese Burek, I didn't want to Waite in the small 4 table pizza place so I tried a pie of the spinach and the left over cheese. Cost me $55 bucks plus one yogurt. We ate real quick because they had no heat on in the pizza place. So would I take the trip out there again NO. Plenty of good places on Staten Island with good Burek. 3 stars for the IG post

Yelp
My grandmother came from Eastern Europe and made the most fantastic, flaky, multi-layered strudels. I grew up eating her savory (not sweet) cheese strudel, and also meat and spinach versions. The only sweet one was apple, and like all the others, it was amazing! One day, she told me that it was actually my Grandpa who had taught her to make it. He grew up in what is now Kosovo, and these wonderful pastries from that region are called BUREK. A Burek is shaped a bit differently than a rolled strudel, more like a pie, but otherwise, it's exactly the same as my grandma's. Tony and Tina's Bureks taste just like hers and really take me back to my childhood. The flaky crust is nothing like most strudels from Northern Europe, which have crusts that are more thick and heavy. The Burek at Tony & Tina's is absolutely authentic. As a kid, I used to watch my mom and grandma stretch that dough so thin that you could read a newspaper through it; no kidding. That (and a fair amount of melted butter) makes for an incredibly flaky crust. This restaurant serves it daily, but Burek is a labor of love and a work of art. I can't imagine how they do that ... I couldn't even attempt it. Phillip is in charge at this little restaurant and is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He himself is from Kosovo and his food is the real deal. A friend of ours had their pizza and said it was good, too. But when we make a trip from Ohio to NYC, getting Phillip's Burek is at the top of our list of things to do. It usually takes the better part of an hour to get there from Midtown via subway, and it's time well spent. If you haven't tried the Burek at Tony & Tina's, just DO. The place is small and isn't fancy in any way. That doesn't matter at all. The Burek is the real treat!

Yelp
This place is phenomenal you got to try the cheese pie it's my old time favorite nothing else disappoints everything is just great Simon is a great guy Phil is excellent I can give them 10 Stars if I could

Dorinne C.

Yelp
The burek was good. But the customer service was not. I went in and ordered one beef burek and spinach. I sat down and ate the beef while the spinach was still baking. Once received, I was taking it to go and asked for another beef burek to go as well. But I knew there was some fresh ones baking and was willing to wait rather then eat the one sitting there. (Since I was going far I wanted it to be as hot and fresh as possible) so I asked if I can have the a slice of the new one and she said ok. She then asked who I'm assuming is the owner and he told her just put that piece in the oven and REHEAT IT. Not a friendly atmosphere and they seem very "what do you want and go attitude". He's worried more about Instagram followers then his actual neighborhood visitors.
google avatar

Edward M.

Yelp
Fair warning to all who come here expecting an Italian pizzeria on Arthur Avenue, and a mistake of my own making, the high quality reviews here relate more to the burek and baklava rather than the slices. A slice here will leave you disappointed, as each one is served limp and lifeless barely reheated triangles of cardboard with a sad greasy pallor. Seating is basically the same as any corner pizzeria, with hard plastic booths and tabletops, and seasoning shakers strewed about the place. Rather uniquely for a pizzeria, there are two large pictures of Mother Theresa and Albanian flags. Sadly I was unable to have the burek or baklava, which looks to be getting all the rave reviews from this place

Edvin D.

Yelp
Extremely good food super service. So happy when we purchase here the nicest ever. I would recommend this Byrek place to anyone truly fantastic. Thank you keep up the good work !!!
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
Came for the burek. Got the burek. Walked out knowing that this place, albeit my ethnic food, will be seeing my face again. The best and when I say best that includes Sydney Australia I have EVER had! The crispy exterior pastry, the soft chewy inner pastry and the perfectly seasoned meat - I mean whoever said good things no scrap that delicious things come in threes was not lying. See you soon Ifran!
google avatar

Jimmy L.

Yelp
It doesn't take much to make a happy customer. Next time you have a potential customer requesting access to a restroom try to be accommodating, it's a desperate situation. Especially in these dark times...jerk!
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
There isn't a place outside of your grandma's kitchen that has better Spinach Burek. This place is always clean, the people that work here are super friendly, and the new outside seating is perfect!
google avatar

Sujan P.

Yelp
The guy working the counter I had the worst attitude. I went in there and asked what some of the dishes are and he got really annoyed. Mind you nothing has labels and some of the dishes have Slavic names. He got annoyed me asking that he just barked off everything off including pizza. "You wanna order anything? Then what?!" I took my business elsewhere.
google avatar

Victor C.

Yelp
Love this place. My favorite post-bar food. The spinach Burek is one of the best things I've ever eaten
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
This place isn't really for pizza, it's all about the bureks. I didn't have the pizza and I don't think it's very good here. It's ironic that it's a pizza place located in Bronx Little Italy and it's trademark is bureks. But their bureks are amazing! I should of also tried the baklava and rice pudding, maybe next time.
google avatar

Jared C.

Yelp
Sometimes referred to as "Tony & Tina's Pizza & Burek" online, I find the reason to stop into this busy little pizzeria is in fact for the burek. It's pumpkin incarnation ($3.50) is the only variety that comes wound in a spiral as it would be in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The dough is perfect, and the pumpkin easier to eat than a thick slice of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. I almost wanted to put some whipped cream on top, but thought that might get me chased off of Arthur Avenue. I saw others dipping their meat and vegetable versions in yogurt, but will have to try this on another visit. I've never tried a slice here, but those in the display case made it look clear to me that the way to go here is towards the Balkans.
google avatar

Hejdi Selma M.

Yelp
By far the best Burek In New York we come from Queens at least three times a month we grab like 34 boxes not only are they fresh the taste is phenomenal what makes us come back even more is the employees and the owner such great humble people I highly recommend this place for those that are giving negative reviews you guys deafly don't know what you're talking about this place is top of the line
google avatar

em b.

Yelp
The burek and the yogurt were sooo good. The mexican guy behind the counter was very friendly. Tried the meat, cheese, and spinach burek. They were all very good but I thought the meet and spinach were the best (personal preference). Unfortunately they were all out of pumpkin otherwise we would've tried that too! The yogurt was awesome and went very well with the bureks. I wish they sold it in a large size to take home!
google avatar

Joey V.

Yelp
If this isn't a contender for best burek in the Bronx I'm way out of touch...
google avatar

Tyler L.

Yelp
Tony & Tina's serves pizza and burek. I have only had burek one other time before and that was at a Balkan place in Midtown Manhattan. It was so-so - a little greasy but not bad. This place is specifically Albanian run. Unfortunately, the burek here was not as good as that other place. I had a slice of meat burek and it was a good portion size and had a flaky outside. However, it was somewhat dry, had very little meat inside and the dough was way too thick. I grew tired of eating it and ended up throwing the rest of it out.
google avatar

Johnny S.

Yelp
Tony & Tina's sucks!!! The worst burek I'd had was from this place!! I'll rather take a plane to Greece or former Yugoslavia to eat burek!!
google avatar

Annette T.

Yelp
Best pizza, and garlic knots. Staff is always pleasant. The baklava and rice pudding is great for dessert. The staff is also fast.
google avatar

Elisa T.

Yelp
I ate a slice of pizza here today for the first time only because Half-moon Pizzeria was closed for vacation. It was the worst pizza I ever ate in my life. Disgusting. Never going back.
google avatar

Nathan M.

Yelp
Tony and Tina's, which should only be referred to as "Burek" in spoken conversation, is pretty much the textbook definition of mediocrity. The pizza is forgettable, nothing too good, nothing too bad. The selection of slices is anemic, easily the worst in the Fordham Area. If you want anything other than cheese, pepperoni, or some sort of vegetable nonsense, you're out of luck - compare this with places like University or Ivana's that have a wide selection of interesting specialty slices. The prices are cheap, but that is the norm for pizza places around Fordham. The only thing notable about this place is the burek. Burek is pretty much an Albanian spinach pie. It comes in a few flavors - usually cheese, spinach, and "meat," each of which has a hot filling in a light, flaky filo dough. It's tasty, but not mind-blowing. Worth trying once, maybe more if you are a spinach pie fiend. Tony and Tina's suffers from a problem that I have seen in many pizza places - the slices are just a little too large. If you get one, you might be left hungry, but if you get two, you will have too much to eat. My recommendation is to get one slice and one burek, and you will have a good amount of food. This isn't a bad pizza joint, but there isn't really any reason to go here unless you want Burek. If you just want cheap pizza, go to University. If you want something more high-end or with a lot of toppings, check out Giovanni's or Ivana's. I feel pretty generous giving this three stars. It probably only deserves two, because in the context of Fordham-area pizza, Tony and Tina's is pretty low on the totem pole.
google avatar

Cynthia L.

Yelp
Don't be fooled. It's a burek place housed in a pizza joint. Burek is like pizza in the Balkans and I've had some really great ones and really bad ones. It's basically some type of pie with meat or veggie. Think spanakopita. Anyway, I was hoping to find some nice bureks with a crispy and flaky crust so I was a bit disappointed that the crust was pretty thick. However it was flaky. One slice is pretty big, I have a hard time finishing one. I think the grease gets to me after a few bites esp it you get a meat slice...you know bureks are not exactly the healthiest thing to eat.
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
File this either in the 'regretted calories' or 'should have checked Yelp first' category. The place has 'pizzeria' in the title, which is what drew me in. I wanted pizza, so I thought going into a Pizzeria might be the logical next step. I don't know where Tony or Tina learned to make pizza, but the only positive thing I can think of to say about this place is that perhaps some day in the future they'll decide to stop making pizza. It was downright awful. No need to elaborate. Everything mediocre about medicore pizza is present here. Sorry to be a little mean, but I really feel like I wasted my money here. If you like burek, I hope you'll read other people's reviews, because they seemed to really like it here!
google avatar

Keidi K.

Yelp
I haven't had their pizza or anything else they offer besides the burek. And its just amazing, definitely a place to cure a crave. Especially when you have it with a cup of yogurt. Place is clean, food is good, service is great. Bonus feature: Menu in Albanian! Priceless.
google avatar

Katie Z.

Yelp
My fave spot for a slice of pizza after a night of drinking in the area. I'm a Fordham student, and as much as we all swear by Pugsleys Pizza, I actually think this place has tastier slices! One negative is that there's not that many seats so you might end up eating outside standing up :( ... as a side note -- I've never tried anything but pizza in this place so I can't comment or rate based on their other food!
google avatar

Vivian. C.

Yelp
First time going there for my birthday and my friend's anniversary. Got a whole pie and 3 sodas for less than $20. Friendly staff and the pizza guy is awesome. Amazing brick oven pizza with a crispy crust and so yummy. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Eddie A.

Yelp
I love there food I come all the way from brooklyn to eat there the neighborhood is amazing very good on the prices

Lisbeth F.

Yelp
This is so far the best rice pudding I have ever purchased in the street. The staff is also very courteous.
google avatar

Alex K.

Yelp
Haven't had the pizza, but I'm giving this place four stars for the Burek, which is consistently better than Dukagjini Burek. The yogurt for eating it with is also better here too.
google avatar

Layla C.

Yelp
Stars are for the burek. I have never had the pizza, nor will I ever. I cannot fathom coming here and ordering anything other than flaky, heavenly burek. For those who are unfamiliar, burek is like a greek/middle eastern pizza esque dish. Layers upon layers of filo dough stuffed with feta cheese, meat, spinach or some combination. Perfect complement to a Fordham football game, especially if you need to be consoled when they inevitably lose. Or to an afternoon of shopping at the Arthur Ave Market. Amen, burek.
google avatar

Rcd S.

Yelp
If you really like to have a good byrek, you go elsewhere (Dukagjini or Side by Side). If you love microwaved byreks, then this is your spot. Pizza is below average for the area, but mostly MICROWAVED BYREKS!!
google avatar

Jed B.

Yelp
I got the meat burek. Had half walking and the other half later. Great lunch for 4 dollars.
google avatar

Lucina C.

Yelp
Best pizza on Arthur ave. Their slices are big & taste great. There's this old guy who is grumpy & has a smart mouth. I guess he didn't know I spoke Spanish & heard him mumble under his breath when I ask him to cut my pizza. I even tip him before I asked, which I regret after.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
In all of my life, this was the best pizza I've had. Far superior to little Italy in Manhattan or the pizza in the nation of Italy. Floury, great dough, perfect ratio of sauce to cheese to dough. If you are around Arthur avenue, this place is a must go to.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
How is this place still here? I didn't have any burek but based on their pizza alone this pizzeria shouldn't be able to survive in this neighborhood. Crust was hardly cooked, way too much cheese (also undercooked) and a negligible layer of sauce. In a neighborhood of pizza giants, just avoid this store.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
I don't know why you would come here for pizza, and despite the hype, (Fordham once had a whole article lauding them in the Paper), bureks aren't that delicious either. I would describe them as kind of bland and greasy, a lesser spinach pie. Also this place annoys me because it confuses life on Arthur Ave. We have Anne and Tony's, and we have Tino's. Tony and Tina's just complicates everything. So boo on them.

Bartosz J.

Yelp
This is definitely the best of the cheap pizzeria's around Fordham. Their pizza might be a quarter or so more expensive, although im not even 100% sure about that(never really noticed), but their slices are huge and much more tastier than pugsleys or uni. One slice can definitely fill you up. The most important thing that sets them apart from the others is that their pizza has a really good cheese and sauce to bread ratio and each of the individual components are above average too. Also, the burek there is great. I have never tried the fabled pumpkin burek because in addition to not liking pumpkin, I have never actually seen it but the cheese and spinach ones kind of taste like a flakey pie with the respective filling.
google avatar

Sanel D.

Yelp
Incredible Bureks and very good but tangy yogurt. Been coming to this place since '98 and the food hasnt changed at all, its as good as it has ever been. Good and speedy service and delicious food, cant ask for much more.
