Boston’s Best Fried Clams | Eater Boston

"Tony’s Clam Shop has been open on Shore Drive in Quincy for more than 50 years, and it has been serving some of the best fried clams the South Shore has to offer for just as long. People on the South Shore tend to be Clam Box or Tony’s people, we’ll let you decide which is best. Take your fried clams — get a plate with fries and slaw — and enjoy the beach views from the patio. Tony’s is seasonal; open from the end of March through the end of October." - Tanya Edwards

Tony’s Clam Shop is a must visit when you're in Quincy! Nestled right across from Quincy Bay Beach, this spot offers unbeatable views, especially at sunset. We sat outside and watched the sky light up over the bay while enjoying fresh, flavorful seafood. My daughter had the Maine steamers (broiled clams), and I went with the cold Maine lobster tail. Both were delicious and served in generous portions. The atmosphere was relaxed, coastal, and perfect for unwinding after a busy day driving from the Philly area to Boston. We were just in town for a few days visiting colleges in Boston, and staying in Quincy turned out to be ideal. It gave us easy access to the city, while offering peaceful waterfront vibes and great food just steps away. Tony’s is one of those places you’ll remember long after the trip, definitely going back when we’re in the area again!

Google
Great spot for the summer sitting out front facing the ocean! They hire all the young folks for the summer. which is great they do a great job. I had a broiled haddock dinner with rice pilaf, and a Greek salad on the side , my husband had a fried seafood platter! They did a great job with both. My heart had the right amount of seasoning and lemon on it. The rice pilaf was a little dry this time. This place gets really packed. They are great steamers and lobster roll as well. I would say the best seafood in the Boston area.

I’ve been living in Boston my entire life and have NEVER heard of this place until today. My sister told me about it and we had to go. We have been craving fresh authentic seafood for a while. Upon arrival it was sort of busy but they have a great system which helped move lines along. I mean it’s your basic clam shop in Quincy, walk up to counter and order and then wait for food to be cooked. We had met a worker named Victoria ( who was so amazingly helpful, kind and so down to earth) along with the food she made our experience that much more top tier… Okay let’s get to the food deets… I ordered a seafood plate which came with calamari ( rings and tentacles ), shrimp ( huge), fish not sure what kind but by far was DIVINE ( wanna say haddock or cod), scallops, clam strips ( which I opted out b/c that’s not my cup of tea, so they gave me extra calamari and shrimps. All this was paired w/fries delicious which all cost around $42 well worth it. I noticed someone else had onion rings which looked out of this world and boy oh boy I tell you I’m glad I did a side order because they were sooooo good, pricing around $8-9. Very fulfilling so much I was able to share with others in my party. The food was NOT salty at all or greasy, and the best part was, it’s fried to perfection 👌🏾All that was needed was ketchup, hot sauce (gotta have it😌) and tarter sauce ( my preference). Victoria recommended the coleslaw which was 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾 happy I took her advice. Now I’m a person who is extremely picky about coleslaw, but not here it’s superb and pairs well with the fish.. My daughter doesn’t like seafood at all, so she got the steak and cheese sub ( sorry didn’t get pics but trust me looked great) the bread looked like it was freshly baked and she too said the meat was seasoned well ( not salty). Her meal came with a bag of chips and a pickle for about $16. She wanted my fries which worked out well since I got onion rings.. So when ordering if you want fries tell them while ordering and opt out the chips, they probably will up charge but again well worth it… The Shirley Temples seemed to be a hit so thats what we ordered and my daughter loved it but to me it was a bit sweet. ( I’m used to drinking water) my sister got an Arnold Palmer in which she really enjoyed. * Forgot to mention lots of different options to choose from even healthy ones like broiled seafood, salads, fresh clams and lobster rolls etc. Atmosphere: Depending the weather they have tables with little cover tents to sit under and eat. Scenery is beautifully because the beach is in the background. Again depending on time you go you will have the sunset to look at while eating. But if that’s not your thing no problem there’s plenty of eating tables inside, which were very clean and big windows to still enjoy the sunsets and views of beach. Bathrooms were available for use as well. In addition per Victoria they have a bar out back w/ live band music ( you will have to check on social media because the days/times vary. [I did see people ordering drinks inside as well] All in all this place is a 💎 and will be my new favorite seafood spot! * Most questions about menu specifics can be seen on there website *

Food was amazing! Great views too! Loved the steamers and fried oysters! Only thing amiss was the dog water bowl was not fresh. (I am sure this was a minor oversight) Definitely coming again!

Google
5 stars for the fried clams alone! perfectly fried, juicy and flavorful. i’ve never had something like this before. the other fried seafood and lobster roll were good but could probably be found elsewhere

_

Google
Pretty crowded and hot, but the wait was not too bad (~20 minutes). They give you a buzzer so that you do not have to hover at the counter. Got a medium order of fried clam strips for $31.95 pre-tax. Most of the strips were decently sized and tasted good. However, I tried a different spot in Quincy a few days prior, and the quality was comparable, but I got more value at the other place.

Google
So I am told this has been voted Boston's best place to get a lobster roll. I can't comment on that because this was my first lobster roll. It was amazing. Absolutely stuffed full of lobster, with a sife of the crispiest crunchiest fries possible. It was covered in hot butter. It was just perfect. The location is a bit far out from central Boston, but by no means inaccessible and the beach it's sat on is really beautiful, particularly at night when you can see part of the skyline of the outskirts of Boston. I just can't give it a full 5 stars because the price is a steep. A lobster roll and one beer set me back $52. This is not, for me, somehow you'd just pop into for a bite to each. But if you are looking for an experience, to try the "best" lobster roll, and you aren't worried about cost, it's definitely the spot.

Google
Some of the best lobster rolls in the boston area. Stuffed with fresh lobster and good fries. Definitely would skip on the sweet potato fries next tome though

Yelp
Tony's never disappoints! We got the broiled fish and jumbo shrimp and they were fresh, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The clam chowder was great too. It's a nice place to enjoy seafood that's located next to the beach and there are outdoor seatings where you can enjoy the breeze from the ocean, view of the beach + ocean. The staff were friendly. Highly recommend this place as it only opens in the summer! Food: 8.5/10 Value: 8/10 Experience: 9/10 Service: 9/10

Yelp
This is a cute little casual clam shop overlooking the water. We ordered the seafood platter, which was certainly enough for 2. We didn't even finish it! The seafood was moist and tender, and we washed it down with a beer. Overall, it was an excellent experience, and I would go again! Its a bit annoying that there is no table service given the price, but I suppose that is to be expected. Bonus, dogs are allowed on the patio!
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Delicious food at a reasonable price (for the area) Seafood platter and broiled swordfish were excellent All of the seafood was fried to perfection and the swordfish was tender and full of moisture. Much better than a few clam shacks I've been to in the north shore. Food tastes and looks like the workers really care about the product they are putting out. We'll seasoned and cooked to perfection A must try for New England classics
google avatar

Yelp
This is the local summer go to spot for Quincy and the surrounding areas it's directly across from the beach and the views of the city and the sunset are awesome the seafood it good as well there is a variety of things on the menu that you can order I ordered a two way combo shrimp and clams with onion rings and fries, i am not a coleslaw person however I wish they offer a side salad. The plate was a little pricey and clams over cooked, and I could have been given a couple more shrimp, however. The service was great and the friendly do that was helpful
google avatar

Yelp
Literally the best lobster roll I've ever had. The food got done quickly and was extremely good. The bread for the lobster roll was superb and a lot better than places I've been to in Manhattan. Staff was kind and patient. Additionally You can seat yourself wherever you like and they have a nice outdoor seating area. Lovely establishment! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Included 2024 menu. Tony's Clam Shop is the best fried seafood shop in the Boston area and it's outside of the Boston area. I'm a huge fan. For 2 people, our favorite order is an oyster basket, medium scallops box, large clam chowder, + drinks. They serve alcohol here now so enjoy when you are dining out. I usually order to go and have beer ready at home.
google avatar

Jen H.

Yelp
Opening day of the 2024 season and it didn't disappoint. Hot and fresh seafood with great views of Wollaston beach! Can't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Yelp
If you are ever in the Boston area, just drive 15 miles south to Quincy, to have a MEMORABLE dining experience! It was hands-down, the BEST food we had in the area! If we were in Boston longer, we WOULD have had the rest of our meals at Tony's! All my life I have had great seafood up & down the West Coast, but NEVER did I have 'fried perfection' like Tony's! The fried clam strips, were so masterfully prepared, they were practically 'dry' from cooking oil! I haven't experienced THAT before, EV-AH (wink-wink)! It was also the tastiest clam chowder I have had in my life, LOADED with clams! I'm not a great fan of sweet potato fries, but after sampling my husbands, I kept pinching them off his plate, here and there. . . They tasted caramelized inside, which made them delectable. SO delicious in fact, that I snagged one of the cooks and asked how they were prepared. He said that they fry them LONGER (very high heat) to indeed caramelize them. I asked about the history of Tony's, and he shared that Tony was Lebanese, and that (since he has passed away) his family operates the restaurant as they have for decades. What a wonderful INSTITUTION Quincy has! :) The restaurant itself is very clean, organized and there is outside dining on a beautiful patio, facing the sea. Sigh. I realize that different cooks on different days, can give different results. And I had read a couple reviews from a few 'soreheads' that weren't happy with their meal, but that is the EXCEPTION and not the rule apparently. I'm seriously thinking about inquiring if they ship overnight, because there's nothing on my side of the country that compares to it.

Yelp
This place is sooo good! The fried clams are so juicy and big. The lobster roll is incredible. The lobster tastes so fresh and isn't overly coated in mayonnaise. I thought the clam chowder was a bit fishy but still decent. This is a must stop if in the area and definitely get some fried seafood and a lobster roll!
google avatar

Izzy T.

Yelp
Yummy! By no means is Tony's cheap, but it's good quality seafood in a really convenient location off the beach. There's parking in the rear and a huge back patio. The interior reminds me of the old Wendy's buildings, but it's very clean and well kept. The employees are so nice and helpful, especially the teens working hard to clean tables and such. The crab cake sandwich was delicious and less than $15 for a pretty good crab cake. It didn't have much filler and the crab pieces were mild but tender. The calamari was great but could've used a lot more salt and a dip or something. The clam strips were amazing, though, super tender but hot and fresh breading. Lastly, the lobster roll (cold) was stuffed with huggggge pieces of meat, and not too much mayo at all. Next time I'll try the hot one. Definitely check it out if you're on the beach or driving up/down the shore. The drinks are also great!!!

Brittany D.

Yelp
Fresh & crispy clams with great beach views.. also the best vodka raspberry lime rickey we have ever had!
google avatar

Pete P.

Yelp
Totally worth the price, and some of the best fried seafood we've had anywhere including New Orleans. Fast service, fresh fresh fresh seafood. Onion rings are perfect. Don't miss this one if you're in the area.

Awilda T.

Yelp
Haven't been here in years. Shrimp in a box not basket. A medium shrimp 30.00 and super greasy, not happening again!! Will go to the Clam Next time!!!
google avatar

Denise F.

Yelp
My go to for fried clam bellies. They also have alcoholic beverages and the best of a New England seafood shop. The service is quick, my order is always right. There's indoor seating and an outdoor patio. It's always busy but, never a long wait. Plenty of parking across the street at the beach and rear of building.
google avatar

S C.

Yelp
I have been going to Tony's for years! It's always a little crowded which I always say is a good sign. Best fried clams anywhere! Worth the wait!
google avatar

Tony T.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places for seafood in New England! Everything tastes amazing and it was the first place where I tried steamers. It has gotten quite pricey though. Everything we ordered in the picture was a bit over $100.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
Very good food u can now sit out back and get served nice ocean veiws up on the patio.

Brian D.

Yelp
I have been eating fisherman's/seafood platters for over 50 years and never had anyone put calamari on one of these plates. I want good fries, fresh fish, scallops, shrimp and clams with belly's. Most seafood platters are so large you can't eat it yourself. This seafood plate was $40 the clam roll $30. My friend got the clam roll and all my calamari and liked it. He also likes Tony's and goes every year. For $40 the "seafood platter" came on a nine inch paper plate. It was not over flowing with seafood. Way too much calamari and the heavily coated french fries. The fish may have been frozen product and not fresh fish. The service was great and with a smile. The place is super clean. There is parking around back if you go down the side streets. They had only been open for a couple of days.
google avatar

Shawn L.

Yelp
Tony's food is always fresh and delicious, I find that no matter how busy they are their customer service is top tier. AMAZING staff! I absolutely love the outdoor seating in the rear. Wonderful environment.
google avatar

Renee H.

Yelp
Good: Lacking flavor. Lobster was was quite bland. Never thought I'd ever say that about a lobster roll but...it was. The meat was also a bit on the tough side but plentiful. Location: location is great, right across from the water literally. Ya can't beat it. Prices: the prices are...a bit high. Especially considering the flavoring. The scallops were very good, lobster roll not so much. Service: service was great! And quick. No complaints there. Would I go again...not too sure. It's a cool place to stop and grab a bite. The place has a calm easy going vibe. Decent seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Your summer is not complete without a visit to Tony's Clam Box. I love the scenic location right across from Wollaston Beach. This time around, my family and I got a few of our faves. On the list were succulent lobster rolls. We also got fried clams, the fried oysters plate, and lime rickeys. Everything was delicious!
google avatar

Chris H.

Yelp
We initially came here because we were looking for a spot that would satisfy our fried whole belly clam craving but also be dog friendly. Luckily Tony's had both! For first timers, I would recommend the Seafood Platter as it has generous amounts of fried clams, juicy scallops, shrimp, fish, fries and slaw and is easily shareable between two or even three people. Everything was nicely fried and juicy - no complaints there! We also ordered the lobster roll which I wish was served a bit warmer and was quite expensive for what you get. All in all a good experience and really reminded me why New England fried seafood is hard to beat!
google avatar

Anthony W.

Yelp
Amazing service. Amazing food. Had the steamers, clam fritters, and clam strips. So sweet and yummy! Love the view across the beach!
google avatar

Grace H.

Yelp
Just ordered a hamburger plate and soda $20 + was horrible worst burger I have ever eaten.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
I have never been disappointed with a meal there. The fried seafood is good. Usually too much to eat for one person. I generally go with a friend and split an order with a salad or something relatively healthy. It's an occasional treat.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
AWESOME FRESH SEAFOOD!!! They offer choices of seafood in a box and that's perfect for me without the fries and coleslaw. Great food and friendly staff! Keep up the great job!
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Stopped in for first time this season ... ordered scallops, clams, onion rings combo...heard woman in front of me say her food was cold... my order came out and was cold also. Clams not crunchy and were soggy... scallops all had the rubber abductor piece of muscle piece still attached and had to spit out piece from each scallop as rubbery inedible. Someone in kitchen doesn't know prep for scallops ...Large sea scallops were fresh. Cole slaw just plain awful. The lobster rolls and grill salmon did look excellent at Tony's; but I didn't order them? Just the soggy clams, rubbery scallop abductor muscles, bland white cole slaw Was much better last year and maybe a new manager ; I'll try Clambox next time as down street and usually good also.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
We were traveling around the Boston area and we were actually headed to another place for lunch. I noticed a lot of people sitting outside on a cold day (52 degrees) so we stopped here. There is indoor seating and we did not have a problem finding a seat. We decided to order their sampler platter and it was enough for two people to share. And it's cheaper than getting a single lobstah. It had 4 shrimp, 4 large scallops, 2 clams, a piece of fish and fries. It is fried which is good but I really do think that large scallops should be grilled or blackened. If I'm back in the area Tony's will be on my list.
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
My son and I are on a mission to find the best lobster roll in New England. This ranks in the tops for sure.
google avatar

LaToya S.

Yelp
The food is delicious. I had the clam chowder and fish & chips. Both were absolutely delicious! The chowder is nice and thick. The staff is friendly and the food was ready fairly quickly. Note: 1) There is indoor & outdoor dining. 2) You order and pay at the counter. 3) You will be given a timer. When it buzzes, you go to the counter to pick up your food.
google avatar

Alee L.

Yelp
Is it even summer if you don't hit up Tony's or The Clam Box? I think not! Fried whole belly clams are my favorite fried food besides my beloved fried chicken. Both rank high and if I can have both, you better believe I'll choose both. My cousin ended up going to Tony's so we ordered two seafood platters and a lobster roll to share with the family. Not everyone in the family was fond of the whole belly clams, well that just means more for me and mom. The food was good, surprisingly we got more scallops today and one shrimp per platter. I'm not complaining because the fried scallops were amazing and the one shrimp on each platter was meh! Not pictured was the grilled chicken caesar salad, which wasn't great. The greens were old and the chicken was dry. Bleh! My biggest disappointment was not having the lobster as my pager! What happened to the lobster pager to let me know my order is up? Bring them back, please and thank you.

Jenny A.

Yelp
My family's favorite casual clam shack. It's right across from the beach in Wollaston.
google avatar

Indira H.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was a kid and the food is still amazing! Love being on the patio during the sun. The only downside is the wait because of how popular they are but will still continue to go!

Kami H.

Yelp
First time here, was never told the fried food would take longer than a lobster roll or how long the wait would be. My order of a lobster roll and medium boxed clams ended up being an hour and 15 minutes. Customers after me were told 40-50 minutes. Had I known, I would have skipped the clams. Not once did anyone apologize for the wait. Great food and view of the water but left with a sour taste due to the customer service.
google avatar

Renee Y.

Yelp
The lobster rolls and the broiled seafood platter were amazing. It was the perfect meal to enjoy on a fine September Boston afternoon by the beach. The inside has glass window so you can enjoy the view without the heat in the summer!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
My go to spot for fried seafood! I always get the clam plate and it comes with a good portion of clams and fries and a side of coleslaw. I know some may feel strongly about how big some of the clam bellys are, but if thats the case i would recommend the clam strips which are a good alternative. The lines here can get really long around dinner time and it can get really packed. I prefer the outside seating because I usually only go on nice days, but if there are no tables you can cross the street and eat on the ledge next to Wollaston beach which is nice too! There is plenty of parking both behind the restaurant and the side streets, and you can also park at the lots for Wollaston beach as well. My friend got the fish and chips and enjoyed it as well.
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
Tony's is the absolute Best! Great Service, Awesome seafood! Going back there today for a late lunch. My wife and I are very much looking forward!! Not only is their food fantastic, Tony's brother Gary helped me look for my misplaced keys last time I was there. Wonderful guy, great people!! Thanks again Gary! All best, Pete and Katie Manzo Weymouth
google avatar

Jimmy N.

Yelp
It was nice to finally come back to Tony's. It's probably been 2-3 summers since I've been back. On the way there, I was preparing myself mentally for a long wait because it is a Friday night and the weather outside was nice. The wait wasn't as bad as I thought. All the tables outside were taken but plenty of space inside. I told myself let's just order and see if there's any availability after. My wife was observing and noticed a family that was preparing to leave. We immediately walked towards it and asked them kindly if there were and they were. We decided to stick to the fisherman's platter and share. I'm glad we did because we were definitely stuffed, after! Everything was seasoned wel and fried perfectly. I love the clam belly's the most. It was so good with the tartar sauce! Overall, the food quality was really good. Price? Definitely more but for the amount that they give, I think it's well worth it. It costed about $38-$39 for the platter. It includes both fries and coleslaw. Highly recommend !!

Michael B.

Yelp
Expensive but I enjoy the food, been going there for years and like most places, eating out is expensive. So if you enjoy seafood Tony's is worth the price.
google avatar

Tom Y.

Yelp
they toasted their hotdogs buns and usually always get a hotdog on the side. the med whole clam box was good and each one was an actual whole belly. looked at the menu, a med was ~$35 and the large was ~$62. we wondered how much the large box can be given the price almost doubled. we prefer the box more than the plate since we usually dont eat the fries. they should also wipe the cover of the drink instead of giving it to the customers with the drink spilling and leaking out all around.
google avatar

Erica L.

Yelp
I finally tried Tony's clam shop and it was absolutely worth the hype. They do fried food so well! The service was fast and everything was awesome. The corn fritters were awesome and the onion rings were amazing! I'm not a huge seafood fan so this place was perfect -- amazing options for all of us. I got the steak and cheese and my sister got a lobster roll. Her boyfriend got the fish and chips. Everything was great!
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious food, speedy and friendly service, nice water view with outdoor seating

Sophia J.

Yelp
LOVE tony's clam shop!! My favorite place! Amazing views and food every time! Service is always so quick and the workers are so nice!! Cannot wait to go back! Definitely an underrated place!
google avatar

Charlie V.

Yelp
Great for the classic lobster roll & fried clam belly experience. It's always busy but they get the orders out fast and rolling. It's gone up in price significantly over the years but so has everything else. It's a great place to sit out at the beach patio with a great view of the ocean.
google avatar

Kenny C.

Yelp
This has been a staple seafood spot growing up in Quincy. I've been here numerous times from when I was in middle school to high school. The prices have definitely gone up but that's completely expected. The quality of food though, has stayed the same. The fried clams and calamari are nice and crispy but not so greasy. It'll satisfy your fried seafood craving for sure. The lobster roll is stuffed full of lobster. You get a ton more lobster than bread. It's pricey but well worth it. It's better than any main lobster I've ever had.
google avatar

Diane H.

Yelp
If the price wasn't so high, this would be a 4 star review. I just can't justify spending $35 on a lobster Roll that doesn't even come with fries! The only reason I would come here is for the fried whole belly clams but my gosh, $47 for a medium of just the clams!! It's good but this is a splurge once a year. I had a lobster roll (with fries), fish and chips and 3 beers with tip included somewhere else and that was $100 but here I only got 2 fountain drinks (a little over $3 each), medium clams and a lobster roll ( no fries ) with no tip included and this was all $100. They should just include fries with all their items. Guess the reviews are right.. it's just too pricy for what it is.
google avatar

ThomaS T.

Yelp
Lobster roll -lobster pieces whipped up with Mayo on top of lettuce squeezed in between a toasted piece of bread. The lobster salad could use a tad bit more flavor. The lobster meat itself is sweet and didn't taste fishy. The bread has a nice toasty crunch. $35 ? I liked the airport lobster roll at an undisclosed location more. Fish and chips - I love how it's not overly oily. Some places have their fried foods weighed down in oil. Crispy fries. $20 Clam chowder -it's okay. Didn't taste sand in my clams so we're a okay. Not as thick as I'm use to either. Beautiful view of walloston beach.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Ahhhhh!! Does it get any better than this?! I live about 30 mins away from this place and I made the hour long round trip TWO DAYS IN A ROW for these clams!! Great portion size, great batter fried to golden perfection and some of the best french fries I've ever had! The coleslaw also had a good flavor but was a bit too watery for me. I would eat these clams everyday if I could - definitely check this place out if you are a seafood lover!
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
First time. Lobster roll lived up to the hype as did the full bellys. Will go again next season.

Yelp
Went there for lunch with my wife. Had the whole clam plate. Fast, friendly service. Excellent clams with nice big bellies. Nice location on Wollaston Beach. This will be my new go to place for fried clams!
