Toro Sushi

Came in on a Friday night unplanned as a different restaurant I had in mind was closed. The space was charming and had cute decor. It’s a bit small for a party, but perfect for a casual date night with my partner! We ordered miso soup to start, a salmon hand roll, the Mango Mango Roll, the Spring Blossom and the Yum Yum Yummy. The miso soup was alright, but the rolly were delicious. The mango was sweet and the fish in the rolls were fresh. I would recommend this place and come back :)

I had 3 rolls. All yum! I asked for no crunch or mayo and they came out perfectly! The fish was fresh and the ambiance was nice! I arrived at 5:15 and sat right down. I would definitely go back!

I would go to Toro for years when I lived in Chicago. I bragged to anyone going to Chicago that Toro was a must go stop for sushi. I’m embarrassed to think this was their experience. I am positive there must be new ownership. We couldn’t even finish the last roll it wasn’t worth the effort.

This is my partner and I’s go-to date night spot! Never disappointed. Granted we know what we like, so we order 3-4 spicy tuna crunch rolls but they are always so consistent & delicious! We also typically have the same server (can’t remember his name unfortunately) but he deserves a shoutout! Such nice staff and a cute / cozy ambiance. BYOB is awesome as well! Highly recommend this sushi joint!

We came in on a Saturday and it was not busy yet so we didn’t have to wait to sit down. They have limited seating and it is very cute inside. The server and chef made sure my special request was respected which was very nice of them. I don’t love raw fish so I got the avocado roll and sweet potato roll, which were both everything I wanted. I will for sure be back.

Overall: The inevitable wait is worth the quality. Great tasting sushi, much better than anything else I've had in the city. Definitely will come back when the craving hits again. The good: Best sushi I have had in Chicago, and the best I've ever had in the states. Only sushi I've had that has been better has been in Japan. Reasonable prices too, for sushi anyway. Humble environment with great chefs. Oh, and its BYOB The bad: The waits are LONG. Plan to put your name down and come back. They don't take reservations either. You will most likely have to wait. Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Food: 9/10

YUUUMMM. Love the sushi here. Lots of great selections for rolls. They are great with gluten free options- even have a gluten free version of soft shell crab. There’s no reservations so hope for the best and prepare for the wait. It’s worth it!

Forget what the Chicago Reader rates as the best sushi in the city. Toro takes the (fish) cake! I've been coming here since 2017 and it has been a delightful experience every time. The food is amazing (try the kamikaze on the hill roll. it's sensational!). The staff is so friendly. The music is all vibes. Can't recommend highly enough!

This is not a "fancy" place but they know what they are and it's special. They are BYOB. They have good quality fish. They're not overpriced. Their scallops are better than any others in the area.

Toro is the best deal in town if you are good with a mediocre meal. For $ 18.95 you get a feast : pick your choice of protein ( chicken, beef or salmon) and then 2 sides ( we went with the spicy tuna roll and 3 piece sushi). You also get miso soup and salad included. The 3 pieces of sushi and miso soup were the only good things we ate. The salmon was inedible ( raw inside but not in an on purpose sort of way ). The rice was not good ( how do you mess up rice?). The salad was not good - bland with a flavorless watery ginger dressing. The spicy tuna roll was decent at best. The service was fast and friendly. The restaurant was packed so a lot of people likely love the huge portions, great prices, decent sushi and friendly service. Just skip the cooked salmon protein option in the bento box ( and rice?) and you might have a bit better luck than we did. Really wanted to like this place. May give it one more try.

This is a cool lil sushi spot in Lincoln Park. Very small inside with limited seating but it has a good vibe and it is BYOB so that is cool. I didn't know that so I'll have to go back with a group and take advantage of that. Wrestled a bit with this rating, but landing on 3/5 stars. The food itself was a 4.5/5 if not a 5/5 but the service was definitely lacking - 2/5. I ordered multiple items that I had to remind the wait staff of after 10-15 minutes. They were polite about it, but they just seemed a bit spacey and forgot. It was like 8 PM on a Sunday when I stopped in so I guess I'll give them a bit of a pass. Overall, its a great environment for sushi. I sat at the bar and the chef was really funny and super fast. Once my orders actually got in, they came out right away. I will say also that they brought the food out in an interesting order. I got the miso soup like 5 minutes after the first roll, so that kind of threw me off. Normally would want to eat it with the edamame before hand... (sigh) oh well! The food: El Fuego Roll - 4/5 This thing is packed with flavor and had a ton of stuff in it. Surprisingly I think it was one of the cheaper specialty rolls at like $15 so I was happy with it. It is pretty cilantro forward (luckily I like cilantro) but if you don't like cilantro I would definitely steer clear. Overall, loved it. Hamachi hand roll - 4/5 Just a super fresh hand roll. I love yellowtail and they load these things up so it was just really full of the fish flavor. Exactly what I was looking for Spicy salmon skin hand roll - 6/5 I ordered this at the last second after seeing another yelp review about it. Normally wouldn't get salmon skin, but thought I would give it a try... OMG. Absolutely stole the show. One of the best sushi-like dishes I have ever had. Super rich, and packed with umami flavor. Nice kick of spice as well. If I go back, I might just order like 3 or 4 of these and call it a day. Miso Soup - 3/5 I am pretty neutral on miso soup in general, and this one was pretty standard. Absolutely did the job, and I think was only like 3 bucks so no complaints. Edamame - 2/5 very little seasoning and it was like 6 bucks. Feel like it should be standard that sushi spots give this for free. At least they give you a sh!t ton, I was eating these for like an hour. Definitely going to give this place another visit in the future- the Kamikaze roll looked pretty crazy, and want to give it a try.

Solid work from the kitchen and fresh fish from the sushi bar, combine with inventive sushi roll menu items to deliver an all-rounder that deserves a place on your regular rotation. Is the dining room a bit tight? Is there nowhere to hang your coat? Yes and yes. But don't let that stop you.

Solid sushi spot! I've been wanting to check this place out for a few years now and just got around to trying it while I had some out of town friends here. The place is small and cozy with only a few tables. It's also BYOB which is always a plus. Service was a bit slower but wasn't a problem. The menu offers so many different items, so there's pretty much something for everyone. The nigiri is very fresh and delicious. I really liked the red snapper! The toro melts in your mouth. The Mackerel is one of the better ones I've tried in the city. The specialty sushi is really good! We all enjoyed it and would definitely come back again. Green mussels - comes with two mussels per shell, super creamy, very saucy and spicy! 4/5 Pig in the sea - 4/5; the bacon is really interesting Trixie - 4/5 Oh my god - 4.5/5 Arizona - 4/5 Halloween - 4.5/5; spicy, I loved the torched flavor Tipsy Trixie - 4.5/5

I was this place was open for lunch during the week. Their Bento Box Lunch special is truly something special. I called in the order and was getting packaged up as I was arriving. They really have a great staff here. I ordered two Bento Boxes. One with Beef teriyaki, tekka maki, and a California maki. The other box was chicken teriyaki, kappa maki, and sashimi. The Bento boxes came with miso soup, salad and rice. I also ordered a Volcano maki roll which was very delicious. The beef teriyaki was good, but I preferred the chicken teriyaki. The side rolls were all good, but my favorite was the sashimi. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. I wasn't a big fan of the kappa maki and probably wouldn't order it again. I can definitely see myself coming back to try more of their sushi offerings.

We did takeout which may have affected my read on this place. I had seen so many positive reviews. For the price, it was okay but nothing that would draw me back compared to the other local places. The fish quality was a bit slimy, the balance of ingredients again okay. Nothing stood out as outstanding. I'll try one more time in-house before crossing off my list. Currently though doesn't compare to yellowtail or wakamono which are current neighborhood favs

I was really excited because they have good gluten free options. However, the avocado was brown, and the fish did not taste fresh at all.

We've been here a few times - most recently on a Tuesday night right when they opened (5PM). I LOVE Toro Sushi! The fish quality is very fresh - I've never had an old piece of fish here. The quantity is also generous, especially for the nigiri/sashimi! We ordered the El Fuego and Awesome roll, and then some nigiri to go with our meal. We scarfed down the rolls; the Awesome is an old favorite of ours and the El Fuego with the heat + fresh cilantro flavor was right up our alley. The nigiri was just awesome. The scallop has a butteriness and slight sweetness you don't get at other sushi places. The ikura were popping eggs of umami goodness and had a nice mouthfeel. The salmon was flavorful and melted in our mouth! Even though their sashimi and nigiri are priced higher than other places, it's SUPER worth it and I can't recommend it enough :) We got there right at open so it was only us and one other table. Our rolls came out quickly and our server was super nice and attentive. We were ogling some hand rolls one of the chefs was making because we were so hungry - they noticed and waved, and we laughed that they caught us. They ended up throwing in some FREE salmon sashimi with our food on the house! The service here was honestly 5 stars! I'm glad they didn't close in COVID. My fiancé and I actually had our first date here, so Toro has a special place in our hearts. Please go here and check it out! You won't be disappointed!

BYOB! And my favorite sushi spot in Chicago. Unique rolls and classics. Always fresh. Staff is amazing. Small so not ideal for large parties. They do offer take out.

Great food at a great price. The fish is always fresh and the quality is consistent. It is hard to find a good place for sushi delivery, but the sushi always arrives as good as it is when I dine in. Highly recommend!!

The restaurant is small and cute, which made it a perfect lunch date. We came in to try the lunch special, and we ended up getting the chirashi combo, two handrolls, and an Alaskan roll. The chirashi came with 2 pieces each of tuna, white tuna, salmon, sweet egg, and imitation crab over a bed of rice. I was a little disappointed that it was imitation crab as opposed to a fourth type of sashimi, but the egg was nice to eat as a pseudo-dessert when I was finishing up! The fish was reasonably portioned for the price, and there was tons of rice underneath. It also comes with a miso soup and salad. The miso soup was perfect (read: not too salty), but the salad was about the average lettuce salad with ginger dressing that you'd expect from a sushi place. The spicy scallop and unagi handrolls were perfectly seasoned, and there was much more fish than we expected! However, the seaweed was a little too chewy for our tastes. The Alaskan roll was also delicious, but it felt like there was less fish in the maki than in the handrolls.

Cute little sushi shop! The spicy tuna has a little kick to it which I did not expect! The fish in the sushi is a decent size and everything tasted fresh! The place is also BYOB where you can bring wine or beer to dinner. The servers are very attentive!

I always get take out from here but 5 stars from me!! It's so tasty and the price isn't too crazy for the area. Servers are always really nice to me when I stop in for pickup. Pretty fast too!

Came here for a casual dinner Friday night, and it was great! The interior really went with the whole sushi place vibe, and felt cozy and nice. The food was great as well! My favorite was the appetizer, which was a sushi version of a jalapeño popper. Best I've had for sure would get it again! The sushi was good as well, but not amazing or the best sushi I've had. It was very good for the price though, and since I live so close I'd come again. We got the spicy salmon and 9-11 roll, which were both good for sure but nothing outstanding. The miso soup and green tea were great as well! Service was great too, food came out so quick and waiter was very attentive. Overall a great experience.

Hands down my favorite sushi in Lincoln Park. Lots of veggie rolls. The tamago (egg) nigiri is HUGE and so good. However, takeout on Friday and Saturday nights is a mess. Always at least an hour behind and total chaos - I feel bad for the staff. Either order early before the dinner rush or go in accounting for the delay and you won't be as annoyed. I personally think it's worth the wait, compared to other sushi options in LP.

BYOB sushi place (limit is one bottle of wine or a 6-pack of beer for 2 people). Low key environment, no frills. Attentive service. They don't take reservations. There is a sushi bar you can sit at and there was always at least 2 spots open on a Friday night, but keep in mind it is a little bit small. This place has such unique rolls, there is something for everyone. The Trixie roll is a MUST. I'll be back!

This is a small restaurant, cozy and cute. The menu is extensive and the fish is fresh. They are not shy with salmon portions which I appreciate.

Best sushi in Chicago and there isn't a close second. The Sunny roll is the best roll on the menu - a must order every time!

Had the most amazing experience at Toro sushi tonight. The lovely hostess/manager of the restaurant (she seemed to be running the place but I'm not exactly sure what her name was) was so kind and thoughtful. She noticed that I forgot to request that one of the rolls on my order be gluten-free so when I came in to pick up my order, she asked if I had meant to make that GF (which I did). She then offered to have the kitchen remake the roll while I waited. And then she thanked me for my patience! she was so nice and noticed some thing that I didn't even notice on my order. 10 out of 10 would recommend this place for the great service and the delicious food. Will definitely be returning very soon.

This is some of the best and most reasonably priced sushi I've ever had! To start, the place is pretty small. There is definitely going to be a wait, if you go at peak hours. I came at 6:30 on a Wednesday and it was about half full. We were immediately seated, which was really nice. Important note: BYOB!! Looking at the menu, i was pleasantly surprised. There are so many options to choose from. There's classic rolls- which are under $10. Signature maki- which was about $11-$17. Then, there were some crazy rolls with things I never expected to have together. We tried the white tuna crunch and dragon roll. They were great! A little small but for the price I can't complain. Then we tried some signature rolls. We got the Arizona and the three amigos. The three amigos had guacamole with it, which I was a little uncertain about but it came out great! I'd definitely recommend if you're looking for a fun spot to try some new rolls!

Coming back to update this to the well-deserved 5 stars! I think every time I order from Toro (which is a lot due to the pandemic), it gets better! Really great appetizers and sushi, and extremely quick turn time for pickup. My favorites are the veggie gyoza, salmon crunch roll, Siberian Tiger roll, and So Fresh So Clean roll. Highly recommend!

This restaurant is small, but very busy - that's a good sign. We had several rolls. Some roll we would recommend are: Spicy Golden Roll - delicious Miami - yummy A great place for sushi. We can't get sushi in the burbs. Highly recommended.

Small neighborhood place, nothing fancy... uh, with the exception of the rolls. Fancy names for the fancy rolls. Our 2 plain rolls were exactly that: plain, simple, and good. The 2 specialty rolls were really good: beautifully presented, with lots of added stuff, also generously portioned. The service was also good and plain, not over the top but certainly sufficient. Prices are just right.

(love letter to Toro) Dear Mitch, How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love your Mitch's Special Rolls, all 32 of them. I love your Nigiri and Sashimi, always fresh. I love your Hand Rolls, built with care. And I especially love your tiny but mighty shop, Bursting with passion and commitment, seeing us through dark times. Thank you!

Sadly, and I don't think its bc of the sushi chef going to the other place down the street. (which isn't all that great afterall either) we did a recent takeout as we were sure it would still be really good. Unfortunately? The quailty of the same rolls we used to have are not remotely as good. Every roll we got we thought uhh we remembered it being MUCH BETTER! It was missing a freshness as well as spice and flavor. It was early in the evening too so that couldn't have been the issue. I think with so many choices for sushi in this city would not return or order from any longer sadly.

I'm not fond of sushi but an old friend who loves them was in town so here we were. The staff promptly brought me hot tea after seeing me shivering from the sub zero temperature we had. They continued to fill my cup throughout the meal which showed me they are very attentive to their customers. I enjoyed the seaweed salad. The portion was a lot more than other places that serve them. The spicy tako was tasty and delicious. I cannot speak for other rolls we ordered, however, my friend enjoyed every bite the kamikaze, spice tuna and three musketeers. The place is small and busy. I love the names of their rolls. They obviously do well from the great reviews and steams of customers coming in and out the evening. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and I would come back again for the seaweed salad and tako.

It's been awhile since I've reviewed a restaurant but Toro Sushi is definitely worth it! Stopped in here for a double date on a Saturday night and the service was hands down, amazing! Chef AJ was on point with the recommendations. It was our first time and he told us the popular items.. we trusted him and it was great! We ordered the kamikaze, oh my god, spicy tuna crunch & red dragon rolls. We left satisfied and saved room for dessert at Molly's next door! Definitely WILL be back to this amazing establishment!! Wish I took more photos but I was hungry!

I was pleasantly surprised to find out they have a lunch special on Saturdays! (Bummed to learn there is not one of the weekdays, though). Anyway, I decided on Bento box "c" and it was a steal! For $10, the box was filled with salmon teriyaki, tempura veggies, a California roll, white rice, and salad. Plus soup as a precursor! The menu allowed a bit of variety for the bento box and it was all so tasty. I'll definitely be back!

I have loved Toro for a long time and used to go more often when I lived in Lincoln Park. Tonight I ordered Toro delivery for the first time through Doordash and though Doordash itself took a while, my order was PERFECT! So often when I order delivery from restaurants I love in person, it's a disappointment -- The presentation is sad, the food is soggy, the order is wrong, etc. But with Toro, the presentation of my maki rolls was as close to how lovely it is in person on the plate as you can get in a styrofoam container. Everything was accurate and fresh and delicious. And the BEST part is that since going gluten-free, I have had a hard time with sushi (especially maki) -- just KNOWING what is and isn't okay. And Toro marks which menu items are gluten-free!!!!! So I can enjoy my sushi with confidence. This order contained the Ahi Salad, Breezy roll, shiitake roll, escolar sashimi, edamame, Spicy scallop, and rock & roll (not GF) Thank you Toro!

The rolls are great quality, the fish is fresh, the place is cool, the service is great, and the prices are right. This is a solid sushi spot. We shared the volcano roll, the spicy tuna roll, the tempura shrimp roll, and the Philadelphia roll. They were all amazing, both because the fish tasted fresh and because they were really well composed. The volcano roll in particular stood out the most. Not only was it really well planted, but it had a lot of great flavors infused in it. I also loved the tempura shrimp and philly rolls. The atmosphere here is really cool - sitting at the sushi bar is very fun. They have a great nautical theme going on and played awesome reggae music. The sushi chef is both friendly and funny. If you're craving sushi rolls, you won't go wrong with this place.

We walked into Toro on Friday at 6:15p-ish. We got lucky with a table (the last one) by the door and nabbed the only highchair. By 6:45p the place was pretty much full and there was a wait for seats. All the sushi we ordered was amazing, our favorite was the Crazy Horse. It was so good that we didn't take pictures before digging in. The edamame was perfectly cooked and salted as well (which is not always the case at other sushi restaurants). We also got the veggie potstickers, deep fried, SO good. Service was great and it is BYOB! I highly reco this place, we will be going back.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Toro until now. Friday nights are sushi nights. We miss dining in right now, but so glad we are able to get takeout. Mitch and his staff are amazing and I appreciate them so much. We've tried a lot of the menu, but our current usual order is OMG, Sunny, JJ, Three Musketeers.

On the cheaper side. Good service. Nice atmosphere. Nice for a quick bite during the week, good sushi!

Really wanted to get my fill of Chicago restaurants on my short 4 day visit, so I stopped in here for an in between meal snack They are BYOB, so of course I brought in my 24oz. of beer. Food: Uni nigiri - my first time trying and I am not a huge fan, sadly. Chock that up to my taste buds, not the restaurants fault. Spicy tuna hand roll - 5 stars. The tuna was so good and left in good size chunks as opposed to the tuna paste you sometimes get with other places in spicy tuna. Tempura handroll - 5 stars. I've been craving more of these since I had it. Fried and fresh at the same time, I really enjoyed this. Service was quick and the location was perfect to have lunch.

The sushi was very good! The only downside is how small the place is, it truly is a hole in the wall with only a few tables. Be prepared for a wait just due to the size. The volcano roll was so exciting! Almost like a birthday celebration, they bring it out with a sparkler. Loved the spicy tuna crunch roll and the ahi tuna roll. The ahi tuna roll tastes a lot like ginger salads and has no rice btw.

Amazing date night! Fresh sushi and service is prompt and the food is superb. Also it's BYOB!

Toro sushi is an unassuming restaurant south of Del Seoul. They are a pretty small establishment that fill up throughout the entire night. Come early! Tako. His favorite between the two maki. Made of sliced octopus, kani, sesame oil, sunflower seeds, and spicy mayo. Love the surplus of meats piled on top. Kamikase. A combination of three types of fishes bring the maki roll very packed with protein and squishy. I personally think this roll was enhanced with the sesame oil.

Got here early, early enough to pick any seat I want (before 6pm). Seems I remember they use to have special and this time they did not. I ordered a bento (1 side) and this time I picked beef. The beef looked like skinny strips of port and I had to ask the waitress "Is that beef?" Honestly, for $15 and the main item is beef - I really don't think I will order this again. Glad I ordered the Sashimi entree, thick and beautiful. Service was good.

Chicago is defintely not known for sushi, sadly. But Toro sushi is probably the best sushi I have had in the city in 5+ years. It is always fresh and reasonably priced. I just wish they had brown rice. The ONLY place to get sushi in Chicago where it is consistently good!
