The 19 Best Gay & LGBTQ+ Bars In SF - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"LGBTQ+ spaces have been vanishing for a long time, but few subspecies are rarer than the neighborhood gay bar. Trax, one of the only queer hangouts north or west of the Castro, is about as chill as they come. Perhaps best enjoyed after some vintage shopping or on a bar crawl through all the watering holes on Haight Street with good bones—this building dates to 1940—Trax opens at noon with barrel-aged Manhattans and Vieux Carrés. And in a city struggling with displacement and gentrification, low-key glamour like that may be exactly what keeps this place going in perpetuity." - ricky rodriguez, peter astrid kane, patrick wong

Google
Trax is a Great "Bar down the Street" you can go to for a Cold Adult Beverage, Watch a Game, Shoot some Pool or just Hang with some Friends. Great Place!

Google
Took like 15 minutes to get any service. The bartenders were just taking shots and making out with other people. The atmosphere of the place seemed cool and I wanted to give the place a try but hard to when you can’t even buy a drink.

We popped in on a whim so we could warm up and use the restroom. We bellied up to the bar and enjoyed the company of our uber friendly bartender. We loved it so much that we had a second round of drinks. I ordered a Mimosa and then a Screwdriver. I was surprised, but the Screwdriver was my favorite. Both were strong and perfectly balanced. My husband just had a rum and Coke. He was satisfied with his drink. In fact, he’s totally why we stayed for the second drink! The restroom was reasonably clean as well as locked (understandable). You need to ask for the key. Yelp labels it as a gay bar | dive bar. We didn’t know it was a gay bar, nor did we care. I learned later that it is the the longest-running gay bar in the Haight-Ashbury area. However, it is indeed a dive bar, which we really liked! Dark, hard wood finishes–gives you a cozy feel on a cold Sunday afternoon.

Google
This is !n old divey bar in the upper Haight. It's fun and super friendly. You might come in a stranger but you'll leave with a new group of friends. This is not a place where you look at what's trending so you can order the same thing and take yet another photo of the same cocktail to post on the web. This is a place where people talk to each tiger, share their stories and become friends.

Tereza

Google
The atmosphere is super welcoming, the staff is really friendly, and the vibes are great. They have an impressively wide beer selection.

Google
Not one bartender talked to me after sitting there for 5+ minutes that's all you need to know about this review.

Google
Ten dollars for drinks tho. Liquor store is cheaper. Just pregame before you come here. Edit, year later: Trax Tue is not 3 dollars. Chard is 7, cider is 6. Sooooooooo hyphy.

Google
I first came here about 20 years ago and Trax has still got its friendly, chill, eclectic vibe. 👍🏻 So nice to have that no-frills, local watering hole experience compared to the oversaturation of superficial trendy bars. Remember, cash is king.

Yelp
I hadn't been to this little dive bar in the Haight, but a friend suggested it so we went! Sat at the bar, had some Mescal, and enjoyed great service from the friendly bartender. This isn't really a spot for finding a hookup... but a lovely spot for a good drink and conversation :)

Yelp
Very sweet. Nice to meet Andy the bartender today. Having lived in SF for over 20 years, I have often walked by but never ventured inside until today, the day of the 2nd Trump inauguration in 2025. Refreshing to see real people, not republicans (like at Harry's bar a mile away) chilling out, drinking like tomorrow will come but not too soon. Happy to live in SF, listening to the music, not TV. Ambiance is pure dive bar, dark but clean, historic without resting on it's "coolness", can't believe how lucky I am to be in SF, CA around folks who don't worry about how much money they will make off the backs of regular people. Thanks! Andy is a sweetheart!

Yelp
I got kicked out for not tipping enough, came in with a group they all got beers I got a couple glasses of water cause we had already drank at another bar I tipped the bartender but he told me he wanted at least 3$ and then kicked me out. Beware the greedy rockabilly bartender

Katrina P.

Yelp
I had the displeasure of visiting this establishment and encountered what can only be described as the epitome of poor service. The bartender's attitude from the moment we stepped foot inside was rude and bizarre. Not only were we immediately pressured to order drinks, but when we requested a mere ten minutes to decide, the bartender rolled their eyes as if it was an inconvenience. I was the designated driver for me and my friends tonight so I was not getting anything and he kept staring at our group saying we all needed to get drinks or else we can't hang out-- even though everyone except me had a tab open. Later on, we were then rudely informed that "it would be appreciated if we closed out because we've been here for hours." I guess we supposedly overstayed our welcome. Mind you, the establishment was still open for several more hours. Overall, the bartender treated us as if we were unruly drunks when, in reality, we were nothing but courteous guests engaging in conversation with one another. As individuals working in the customer service industry ourselves, we were appalled by the lack of professionalism displayed. We all felt so uncomfortable that we left. Also, the presence of mice scurrying about only added to the overall dismal experience. Save yourself the trouble and avoid this establishment.

Yelp
Fun funky and really good drink prices Friendly bartenders Great location and fun vibe Old school bar
google avatar

Yelp
Vibes are lit because music is really good. Bar is basically packed - $1000 cover is the joke here LOL They also have a pool table which costs $2 per game. I like it here, recommend with respect :)

Yelp
Awesome dive bar! We just happen to walk by and decided to stop in for a drink. The bar was not too crowded and finding a place to hang out in was easy. The ambience was casual and I definitely see why locals frequent this spot. The bartenders were very personable, entertaining, and a joy to have a conversation with. Drinks were heavy poured and the prices were cheap compared to what we pay back home. They had a diverse mix of music and crowds. There's a pool table at the end of the bar. I recommend the corner bench seat which has nice view of the whole bar and also a prime spot for people watching. We've vowed come back to this bar whenever visiting San Francisco. This place is a combination fun, friendly, and lively. It's also a nice alternative to the Castro bars.

Yelp
Unless your trying to get jumped by a bunch of lil 21 boys who can't play pool don't come here. Came in earlier today in a happy mood visiting for the week. Had two drinks played one game of pool. I seen a younger crowd come in. Didn't think anything of it. They started playing pool right after. Played there game and a team lost., made a huge deal because they didn't want to share the pool table. Stupid bartender had their back when they were being super disrespectful. Grown men taking shit to me as if they were female. Overall experience don't go here if you WANT TO GET DISRESPECTED FOR NO REASON!!!!!!!!! If I could give zero I would!!!! Do not spend money here !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
I visited on the afternoon of October 29, 2022 and immediately liked the bar. I met Tony, the bartender, and he was so friendly, welcoming, funny and makes AMAZING dirty martinis (vodka, shaken, 2 olives). Not too many people in the bar at that time (probably 1pm or so?) so it was the perfect time to go. Good music, friendly people, excellent drinks and overall my kinda place. Too bad I only visit San Francisco every few years, but I will be back.

Esther B.

Yelp
i love this bar. everyone that works here is an angel. rosie specifically. i will be coming back. thank you very much.
google avatar

Nathan D.

Yelp
Friendly bartenders overall. Hostile and drunk patrons. The debit card machine does not work which forces you to use their ATM. Fix your machine and control your drunks.
google avatar

Jayline E.

Yelp
The bartender was nice, but the atmosphere was negative, i've never experienced such a negative vibe within the LGBTQ community, I was pretty shocked as someone who comes from praising diversity and treating others with respect. I didn't expect this from track and was pretty disappointed, I hope that in the future they do better in fostering a positive, safe environment for their customers and don't feed into the negativity of the customers that freeload in the back playing pool without buying drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
$3 margaritas! And they are great!! Having drinks with friends to celebrate Labor Day! Great music and vibes. Lots of tables to gather and great beers on tap. Located right on Haight in the middle of everything! Left the boys and after a few $3 margaritas we shopped and left them here!

Yelp
One day while walking in the Haight, I had to pee really badly. When every other bar gruffly said no, the friendly bartender at Trax smiled and said yes. He seemed surprised when I gave him a tip. Trax is a place to chill in an unpretentious atmosphere. It's one of the few gay bars left in the Haight. Everyone is welcome and can feel comfortable.
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Solid three here for a midday stop..bloody mary 805 and a bathroom break. Decent service, drinks and nice place...id come here again if i was in the area. We used it as a pit stop on the way to other places..cheers!

Robert C.

Yelp
The cocktails were good and the bartender was friendly. This place hits all the right notes for a gay dive bar.
google avatar

Marc R.

Yelp
Good watering hole. You can drink here with people who are drinking. You can sit on your phone or laptop in the corner and be that way and no one will bother you (mostly). Or you can sit at the bar and joke around and talk to the strangers next to you or pretty much hang out as you would at any dive bar in the USA. I liked that this was a non pretentious non tourist trap sort of place in a city that seems overrun by tourists and tech bros these days. If you want to drink and well drink then drink here.
google avatar

Jill H.

Yelp
This is my favorite bar in the city. The drinks are good and strong and cheap and the service is friendly every time. I love the music, a lot of 80s, pop and rock, house sometimes. It's listed as a gay bar and yes, it is, but it's a mixed crowd and straight are just as welcomed. I'm a straight woman who just wants a chill place to have a good drink after work and this is it.
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
If you're looking for a perfect way to pass a rainy or bleak Sunday afternoon - come to Trax. The bartender has a phenomenal collection of old school soul, rock, and Motown records - including everything from the Beatles to Patsy Cline, which he plays with a smile throughout the day. And with a pool games at a dollar a piece, you can just shoot away, while grooving with your cue stick to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It's pure San Francisco magic. Just be wary of their five dollar Bloody Mary's - my pool companions were chugging water by the glassful - due to their overly spicy drinks.

Yelp
$2 Tuesdays. Gay bar with the nicest people. Walking distance from my apt. Can't tell if it's a good thing I didn't discover this place til now. May be dangerous... See you one of these Tuesdays, for sure!
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
Bartender had some customer at the bar approach my friend for not leaving a tip. All she ordered was a beer..... Never been to a place that scolds you for not tipping. Really sad
google avatar

Don P.

Yelp
With shots like that and $2 beers on Tuesdays, what's not to love?! Exactly. The bar tender was nice and friendly. Great looking dive bar with an odd selection on tap. There's no crap beer on tap. Trumer pils, stella etc. Makes this place a great find. Music is decent enough, lots of tvs. The plastic strips on your way in are a little off putting. Scratch that. The bartender's AWESOME. Talks great shit, and is who he is. He went on a tirade about hipsters. Sorry hipsters... oh wait, no I'm not. Hard to argue with that. Don't know why this would matter, but it is a gay bar. Meanwhile, I accidentally left my umbrella there and sure enough two days later they had it in the back. I highly recommend heading back.
google avatar

Yelp
Found this bar at the end of the Haunted Haight tour (spoiler alert: it's haunted!!) This bar has it all: ghosts, cheap drinks, friendly service, pool tables and great music. And don't get me stated on the $3 Monday Margaritas!!

Kristian Y.

Yelp
Hands down the best place to get a Bloody Mary in San Francisco. They clearly know what they're doing and take their time with each one, no premise mix bs. Peter made both of the ones we ordered to perfection.
google avatar

Adriana R.

Yelp
Stopped by before heading out a concert. The bartenders were really nice and fun to talk to. The drinks were great and at a really great price too!! The bartenders and drinks were a large part of the reason we had such a great night. Not a local but definitely would come again if I was in town.
google avatar

Melanie P.

Yelp
When I came here, I had no idea this was a gay bar! I was just impressed by the prices and drinks. The service was just "eh...". The bartender was excited to see my guy's credit card, but said it was effed up that he didn't want an open tab. Like, okay. He was nice otherwise though. But my $2.75 cosmo on the rocks was AWESOME. Admittedly it was my first time trying this drink, so my judgment may not be that reliable. Anyway, I enjoyed myself and the prices here.
google avatar

Dixie L.

Yelp
This is my first time at a bar so I did not know what to expect. Which brings me to my first mistake! I'm so sorry to the bartender who served on the Thursday night. I didn't realize I have to tip, my bad! Now I know.. anyways they don't serve any blended drinks here they only serve drinks on the rocks. With that being said, I ordered a margarita with salt on the rim-- it was a good ratio of alcohol and the lime! And being a lightweight like me, I was definitely much buzzed with just one glass. They have only one billiard table. it doesn't cost much to play but it is quite a dirty one. But here's a little tip, if you get the white ball in the hole don't worry it'll automatically spit out of the machine. Bathroom. Reeks! You can practically smell it throughout the entire establishment.. but I guess that's what you would expect out of a bar? Gay pride? Well the place definitely has gay people there. One was very flamboyant and friendly! He definitely made my friends day :)
google avatar

Matt A.

Yelp
Thank you to Mark and the staff for always being amazing. What love in the room yesterday for Andy's memorial. Mark, you have an amazing heart. Love you man. Trax is a perfect place for a rest stop while shopping in the Haight. Great staff, lots of history, and just a great place for a delicious Bloody Mary!
google avatar

Foxy F.

Yelp
Walking down Haight on a lazy Sunday Afternoon, we see the $5 Bloody Mary sign and walked in. Once our eyes had adjusted to the darkness we found a spot by the pool table. Not a lot of seating but it wasn't that bizzy and music was being dj'd by the bartender, which was a nice mix of blues and jazz and not ridiculously loud. The place was chill and had a nice mix of people, the bloody mary was outstanding, not just a mix outta the can, I was chomping on chunks of horseradish and a spicy pickled green bean, it's amazing what a good bloody mary will do for your afternoon.
google avatar

Dan H.

Yelp
Great super clean bar on this crazy and historical stretch. There was even some locals openly smoking mota on the street, yep the 60's are still alive and well in "The Haight." Perfect spot for an afternoon wetting of the whistle break from perusing the interesting shops. Small, but good selection of craft beers, and a full bar. Not sure how the evening crowds are, but was extremely dead on an early Sunday afternoon. Roy is a way groovy bartender too!!
google avatar

Christian S.

Yelp
Live literally across the street and so bummed this is the worst bar on haight. Bartenders will notice you and ignore you or say be right back then forget you were there. Sh*tty bars that are cool can get away with this, trax has no such redeeming qualities.
google avatar

Lee H.

Yelp
Attentive barman. Acknowledged us straight away. Super efficient and friendly. He works very hard serving and keeping while bar tidy. Great! Bloody Mary's amazing... pickled asparagus, green beans, carrots and brussel sprouts! Gorgeous. Try it!!
google avatar

Jezza Mei O.

Yelp
Robert, the bartender, is real cute & handsome! Strike up a conversation with him, you'll end up laughing by the time you leave... Oh ya & $2 beers on Tuesdays are pretty dope, you have choice of over 10 different bottled beers & 9 on tap, it gets crackin!
google avatar

Kari O.

Yelp
I absolutely love Trax it's my 2nd favorite bar in the world and by far my most favorite bar in the city. No trip to SF is ever complete without a visit to Trax! I typically visit during the day and their day bartender, Andrew is amazing!!!! He's super cute and attractive, friendly, and he plays the best music and has the best taste in music ever! Period! Andrew also pours really good drinks and I'm picky so that's saying a lot! I also feel that Trax is the kind of bar where anyone gay, straight, bi etc would feel comfortable....it's relaxed and chill....it's more subdued....not your typical gay bar and I love that!!!
google avatar

Leena B.

Yelp
This is where I experienced the best bar day ever. It was Super Bowl Sunday and my friends and I were looking for a chill place to sit and watch the game. We walk in to find this awesome place. It was a nice little neighborhood bar. We found some seats next to some awesome people and started watching the game. THEN, magically...4 giant pizzas walked in. I have no idea if it was the bar, some random nice guy, or what but it had to make the review. I mean when God sends me free pizza...I have to publicize that. Oh aaand free chicken wings. The atmosphere was great and the bartenders were super friendly! All of us were made to feel at home like we've been homiez since forever. Not sure if it's a gay bar or not. No one hit on me but that's typically not the best metric...it could have been me...hahaha :)
google avatar

Yelp
Originally from San Francisco (not the bay; I'm actually from San Francisco, but now living in Chicago. I come to San Francisco to visit family during the holidays (thanksgiving, Christmas, and easter weekend). Well back on December of 2013 I was just bumming around looking for a bar to grab a beer with a friend. Stumbled upon Trax. The beer is cheap. Considering a pint of craft draft beer is cheaper than any bar I've seen in Chicago (and we all know San Francisco is an expensive city). The bartenders are extremely friendly, and I've met some awesome people here. I try to come here with friends every time I'm in San Francisco to visit. There's a pool table that's easy to get play time on. Only negative to this place is the bathroom. Only one very dirty unisex bathroom which you need to get the key from the bartender or the person in. Very gross.
google avatar

Steven E.

Yelp
Casual spot, cheap drinks, friendly bartender. 5 or 6 beers on tap. Good spot for people watching if you can grab a window seat.
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
I went tonight. 9/26. Went inside and there was a few people there. No bartender. I waited a slightly awkward amount of time. Not extremely long. However, long enough for me to be uncomfortable. I was going to stay for a bit and play pool as it was a new bar for me and was going to inquire about the Trax joining the San Francisco pool league. But, since it didn't seem like anyone was around I left.
google avatar

Roy H.

Yelp
Best Bloody Marys in the city!! Check them out on Sundays!! $2 Tuesday all beers!! Only gay bar in the Haight!! Great place to hang, great music and friendly staff!!
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
Got here early on Sunday eve for Ms. Rachel F.'s bday (Holla! Happy Bday darlin!). Quite a fun celebration. Since I was already in the neighborhood for a day party, I had Pam B. meet me early for dinner, then drinks. Trax was pretty empty but when I walked in, this smokin' HAWT blond was totally checking me out!! I knew it was a gay bar and I was feeling extra flirty. So I sit down, and she sits with me! OMG. I'm totally getting hit on by this chick! So I lean over to say something, right as she leans to me, and wouldn't you know we both said "Hi" at the same time! Jinx! You owe me a coke! OMG we're like twins. This is so funny... Oh wait... You are a mirror. DAMMIT. I'm so blond sometimes. (shhh! don't tell anyone but I totally took her home with me!) Anyways, they keep their wall of mirrors really clean so the place looks huge but it's not. It's tiny. You need a key for the bathroom (like a true haight st. bar should). While it was clean, it smelled SOOOOO strongly like piss. It's unisex so when you sit on the toilet the urinal is like nose level. NOT GOOD. People here are friendly. There are the inevitable tourists who have no idea it's a gay bar - so fun to play with them. Drinks are strong. ps- your welcome Joe C.
google avatar

Pam S.

Yelp
Hey, do you know how fabulous Rachel F. is? Oh, Joe C. told you? He does that alot, it's kind of cute, really. ANYHOW, so a bunch of us gathered here to celebrate all that is Rachel F. While Ali, Ali's date in the mirror, Angelo and I waited for the guest of honor, we got to really check out this place. And this place was really cool. Where else can you drink WHILE watching the world's heaviest man get driven around on a flatbed truck on t.v. WHILE watching tourists point at something in the doorway? Nowhere. As I was avoiding the alcohol that night, I could not tell you the quality of the drinks, but that bartender ROCKED it, even after all of us showed up. Toast one to Rachel F.!
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Its been a while since I've been out drinking in the city. I can't blame it on anything other than just being too lazy to do the drive from San Jose. JZ and I went to Trax to help Rachel.F celebrate her 21st birthday. It was real fun meeting some of you sassy SF yelpers but no, I will not talk slower and no, I will not wear a kilt. Trax is your typical haight bar. Its not glamorous but its fun and welcoming. The bar staff were great. Especially Mr Tall Smiley Barman. They were exceptional at remembering my previous rounds, which changed radically each trip. I think they put magic sober-dust in the Guinness, because I just could not get drunk and believe me - I tried really hard. My only complaint would be having to wait in line for the one and only bathroom, even though I did enjoy watching the patrons play a quick game of "squeeze as many lesbians in a toilet as possible".
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
How can I not love this place? Last night, a guy sitting by himself at the bar told me as I sat down..."You're pretty" and not in a 'I just want to get in your pants so I'll flatter you with lies' kind of way. He was being genuinely appreciative and it was oh so flattering and kind of made my already pretty awesome night. I've been here a handful of times now, and each time I walk out with stories to tell. The bartenders rule, drinks are cheap and strong, and although it's technically a gay bar, there is a wide array of different types here on any given night. I've been hit on by gay men, gay couples, and bi-curious women here, not to mention a certain highly intoxicated sweet older gentleman. And you wonder why I love this place?
google avatar

Eric E.

Yelp
My 3 favorite things about Trax: 3. Beer is 2.50 on Tuesdays! Where else can you get a pint of Big Daddy for that price? 2. The touch screen game, which my roomie and I glue ourselves to for a little erotic photo hunt and a little tai-play and a little wordster...whoever "Bttmbois" is, we are gunning for you! Watch your ass! and.... 1. BILL! Bill is so completely awesome! He plays the best music videos EVER. And, as a gift to me, he played "Oh Sheila"!!!! In addition to his awesome videos, he's also the coolest guy around and we are lucky to have him.
google avatar

T M.

Yelp
So much fun! Super great atmosphere for straight or gay people. I wouldn't let me friends leave to go dancing anywhere else because it was so much fun at Trax. Make sure you go here!
google avatar

Jillian M.

Yelp
Their $5 Bitchin' Bloody Mary is brilliant, and delicious. Like spicy tomato hot sauce vegetable salad with vodka. I know, I know. My description is not the best, but trust me. It's legit. Anyone who fills their drinks 3/4 of the way with booze is a friend of mine. Also, they have nice window seats so you can drunkenly leer at the sexy "faux" bums that hang out in the Haight. Not that I would ever do that of course. Definitely not. Not this Jillian.
google avatar

Richard T.

Yelp
1.00 Drinks. Got your attention? See you there Saturday Nights for the pre-party drink specials from 9-10PM. It's how smart party people do it.
google avatar

Tyrone B.

Yelp
I'm not gay but I LOVE this bar. They got cheap drinks and it's mellow in here. Sometimes the boys will flirt but it's all good. It boosts up my confidence for the ladies!
