Where to Eat Pancakes in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Light and lacey are the “Pannekaker” pancakes at the Albany Park Swedish bistro, Tre Kronor. Dusted with powdered sugar and served with traditional lingon jam, these air-thin crepe-like cakes are a simple, sweet, and satisfying alternative to the all-American buttermilks." - aimee.levitt, Eater Staff

The quintessential Swedish cozy restaurant. The servers are so nice and super helpful. We tried fresh pastries, omelettes, and of course the Swedish meatballs. Everything was fresh and delicious. The table next to us had the French onion soup and u will definitely be ordering that next time.

Had a delicious breakfast with my husband. He had the eggs Benedict with salmon. He thought it was amazing. I had the Belgian waffle with fruit and homemade whipped cream. It looks like it would put you into a diabetic coma but it was surprisingly not that sweet. It was very well balanced. I probably wouldn't order it again because there were so many other things on the menu that sounded great. And the table jext to us each had quiche and that looks amazing.

Google
Simple food well prepared. Swedish food. I thought it was cool that it was a handwritten menu that’s photocopied but my girlfriend wanted some pictures. The price was fair but not cheap and the sausages were very good and different. Not too busy when I went. But lots of people.

Best birthday surprise ever! My husband and I are both linguists, so when we saw this beautiful restaurant, we knew we had to experience dinner in Sweden 🇸🇪. The food was absolutely perfect, right down to the last bite. Joe ordered the lingonberry duck 🦆 in port wine sauce. I had the rainbow trout au gratin dauphinois. We also got the dagens soppe (the bacon 🥓 lentil soup) and the brie with sliced apples 🍏, almonds, and honey 🍯 on hartack bread. For dessert, Joe had the lemon tarte 🍋 with blueberries 🫐 and a vanilla bean tea, and I had the lingonberry crème brûlée and a coffee. The reason why we're giving it 5 stars is because 6 stars was not an option ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. The best part, though, was getting to meet our legendary server Roland and the award-winning owner Miss Patty 🏆. They were so friendly, welcoming, and helpful that they made us feel as though we were the most important people in the world 😇. We live a couple of hours away, but we will be making regular trips to Andersonville so we can relive this wonderful evening. We loved the semla buns Miss Patti gave us, and we're already counting the days until Sankta Lucia in December 🕯️💫.

Google
Seems to be a shadow of its former self. The food was good but not served as hot as I had requested. Despite having very few customers the server was inattentive and broke the cork in the wine we brought. She was very nice but she seemed very overwhelmed by the no more than three (at any given time) tables she was taking care of. The building which was once a show piece of Scandi Kro design is falling apart. Sad. We used to love this place (my husband lived in Denmark years ago so we always had a soft spot in our hearts for this cuisine.)

Super quaint little spot right in the corner that transports you to another country! The food and staff are equally amazing and I can’t wait to return.

Google
This Scandinavian eatery is a gem! We were passing through Chicago and saw this on a few blog reviews. It did not disappoint. We enjoyed dining outdoors! The raspberry custard pastry with coarse ground cardamom in it was delightful! Not super sweet and very fluffy. Raspberries were hand picked by the owner. The salmon (wild caught) and dill quiche was delicious and light, served as a large portion - I couldn't even finish! The shrimp omelette was delicious, wonderful and amazing (according to my husband). Our server was very easy to converse with and the owner, Patti came to chat with us. She sources her ingredients locally, where possible. They import other meats from Denmark. They've been in business for 31 years. We are definitely going to go back next time we're in Chicago!

Google
What a quaint spot. On a work trip to Chicago, I was looking for a breakfast spot a little off the beaten path. This place is clearly popular & known, but I like that it's not I the middle of more heavily transited neighborhoods. I was lucky that I came on a day their amazing cardamom knots were baked (I overheard a server say they are not available every day) & got to taste one, so delicious! I asked for the lingonberry jam & happy I did so because it brought a bit of sweetness to it that I appreciated. I liked it so much I ordered one to go to bring to NYC with me. I also had the salmon, cheese & dill omlette, also delicious. I loved the atmosphere, which is cozy & non-pretentious. The service was attentive and hospitable. I very much enjoyed this spot & highly recommend it. Lots of options on menu to suit multiple tastes. Also, I would recommend taking a stroll to the Swedish shop across the street, a fun pit stop after your decadent & scrumptious breakfast.

Yelp
One of my absolute favorite breakfast places in Chicago. The outdoor patio, food, and service is unbeatable. Great Swedish food, never thought I'd enjoy a lox quiche but it was AMAZING. I will be going here until I die. I love you Tre Kronor. Also, checkout the outdoor space in the photos! Adorable.

Yelp
You know what's great about brunch at Tre Kronor? It's not brunch. It's a breakfast menu and a lunch menu, and you are not bound by some chef's notion of what to do with all the trash left over from the week. The menus seem just a little limited until they tell you the specials. Then we all ordered from the specials. And if you don't have smoked salmon at a Swedish restaurant, I don't know what's wrong with you. The salmon Benedict was amazing. I'm told the Florentine Benedict was also great, as was the GIANT wedge of quiche. I hadn't been here in a few years. Glad to see they still have really great food and excellent, strong black coffee. The service is delightful. The patio is just dripping with charm. And while prices are up everywhere, they are keeping things pretty reasonable. I think we would have paid about as much in a diner. A lot more at a trendy brunch spot. We won't wait so long to go back next time .

Yelp
What a lovely brunch spot! Their backyard / garden is very expansive. There's a lot of shade there so it was fairly comfortable sitting out there on an incredibly hot day. I ordered a dirty chai with oat milk. I was happy that they had alternative milks. The dirty chai lacked some flavor but I enjoyed it enough. We started with the pickled herring. If you like pickled herring, this is a great dish! I liked the grain mustard one the best. We also got the cinnamon roll. It was on me that I didn't ask if there were raisins in it but I think I would have liked it more had I gotten it without raisins. I absolutely loved the Reubenssen sandwich. It came with Jarlsberg cheese, which is naturally lactose free - a huge plus for me! The sauerkraut in it was really nice. I loved the potatoes with it. I'd love to come back!

Yelp
Found a new favorite breakfast place! Chicago is known to have a history with Swedish American population . Right next to North Park University is Tre Kronor, which very beautifully prepared Scandinavian dishes. Really digged the Anders Hash I had. Very tasty! Great service and a very cozy space that was great for a winter day! #swedish #scandanavian

Yelp
This breakfast spot has a somewhat limited menu, but the food was good. I had the Vanilla & Orange French Toast, and my husband had Two Eggs, with Fried Potatoes, and Toast. Menu items are pretty straightforward but nicely executed. I'd love to see better coffee options though.

Yelp
A few years have gone by since I've been to Tre Kroner. Still quant and nice. I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs and a cinnamon roll. The cinnamon roll had a lemon glaze and raisins inside of it. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting but taking into account it is a Swedish restaurant I enjoyed it. I have to remember I am eating American/Swedish food. The corned beef hash and eggs were delicious. I enjoyed smearing my toast with the Apple Jam at the table. They serve more Swedish style sausages here and other types of food. Since I don't eat pork, I couldn't partake, but I always find something when I come in. The restaurant is quaint and still very homely. The service wasn't too bad either. I always enjoy my trips to Tre Kroner.

Yelp
Highlight: Best hollandaise sauce I have had in a long time! Cozy warm little restaurant. We went for brunch and were seated right away in the busy main dining room. We ordered swedish pancakes to share as a group. I felt they were good and I liked the ligonberry jam as it added a unique tart flavor. They were thin and authentic of European pancakes. I ordered the eggs Benedict with spinach and found it very tasty! The hollandaise really made this meal above and beyond the rest was good. Service was good! They come around a lot to give coffee and water.

Yelp
Food is good, but no real gluten free options. It is like a little house and depending where you sit it can feel a little loud and crowded. Service is spotty. Sometimes great, other times not so much. If they had more gf options I would go back, but too many other places that make it easier for someone with dietary restrictions to eat.

Yelp
We went recently to eat during their lunch hour. I got myself the Belgian waffle. The waffle was okay, wish it came while it was nice and crisp. The fruit were good and went well with the waffle. I wish they gave me my own syrup but instead I had to reach over to get a family member's syrup that came with their meal. The service was great she was very attentive with us and made sure we got what we needed or wanted. The ambiance is great! They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Lunch and breakfast menu is a bit limited items wise.

Yelp
Very reasonably priced and perfectly portioned brunch plates (not too much, not too little). We tried two danishes, hash and eggs, orange French toast, house sausage, swedish meatballs and ice coffee. Everything was well prepared, flavorful and bright! The food was not heavy and was a total delightful way to start the day. The coffee was a bit more burnt than I like, but that's a personal preference. Service was super friendly and attentive! Decor is very cute and reminds me of a small town in Europe. I can see why this place is a neighborhood gem and why people would travel all the way from the suburbs to dine here.

Daisy G.

Yelp
I stopped in here for a quick bite to eat recently and I was pleasantly surprised! This spot is so cute and cozy. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is AMAZING. Very satisfying and worth every penny. I'll be coming back frequently!

Yelp
What a delight! Charming restaurant that also offers patio seating. Everything was delicious. I had the scallop special and my husband had the trout. We also had onion and potato soup. So wonderful. Prices are great and the portions are manageable. Abby was a sweetheart. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't been here in years but took a couple of friends yesterday. I love all things Scandinavian and this place is so cozy and cute. It was torrentially down pouring all day, so no sitting outdoors in their whimsical little garden. Try a pastry to start (Scandinavians love their sugar and black coffee). Be prepared to wait a little bit. This place is popular and cozy! Highly recommend their quiche for breakfast, Swedish pancakes, and meatballs, of course! Also, shout out to Roland, who was a wonderful server!

Yelp
Appeared to be a place for college students to work for the summer. Staff is kind but the food took over an hour to come out. It was not that busy of a day and definitely not ideal for a family with two squirmy hungry lil ones. Food came out faster for a party that came after us. The food was decent but we could have eaten anything at that point. Also, before ordering, I saw a huge platter of strawberry tarts and asked our server about them. She told me that there were no such thing and said they only had danishes. The danish turned out to be not at all what I expected, but it was what it was. This restaurant is quaint so that was nice, like you are eating in an old fashioned home. We were seated in a corner very close to other parties in a small separated section of the restaurant. Again, not ideal for families with small children. Overall, main reason for this lower rating was for the long wait for our food.

Yelp
Completely blown away by the food and the service. I've been back now at least once a week. A must visit place, but only if you like great food, fresh ingredients, and affordable prices.

Connie B.

Yelp
Been coming here for years. Service used to be better. During last visit, waitress said organic sausage delicious when I asked her about it - no mention it was ultra spicy. She took order and wasn't seen again til after meal and check presented. That's when I asked if sausage was suppose to be ultra spicy. Yup. So much for info. Paid bill with cash. Cash was scooped up so fast it was like a hawk came down for prey. Hubby and were both taken back and turned off by this visit. Not sure if we'll be back - plenty of good restaurants in Chicago.
google avatar

Yelp
Came for one particular dish, ended up getting three, haha. It's a charming, quiet cafe; it wasn't very busy when I visited Saturday night, but the customers were frequent. My server was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu; her recommendation for the crab cakes was the best dish I ate out of everything I ordered. I did like the swedish meatballs, but it didn't beat out the crab cakes, and the French onion soup was too salty and heavy for me to eat in its entirety. They ran out of the dish I came for, Toast Skagen, so for that alone, I'll visit again.

Yelp
We love everything about this charming Nordic restaurant! Always our favorite for special occasions. Try their desserts! Wow!
google avatar

Jennie A.

Yelp
My family has been going to this restaurant for over 30 years and we always love it. The service is always quick and kind and it feels a bit like Sweden in there I just love it. The food is so good, the Belgium waffle, salmon omelette, and the fresh squeezed orange juice are my favorites. I will always try and visit this restaurant whenever I visit Chicago area! It's worth the stop!
google avatar

Yelp
We had a great time at Tre Kronor having brunch as a family. We had the Belgian Waffle, Oslo Omelette, and the Quiche. Portions are good. We also tried their sausage and the cinnamon roll (uhm sorry no pics! We devoured it fast. It was so good). The OJ was freshly squeezed, coffee flowing well and food was very good. The service was great and the people was so friendly and helpful. Ambiance is perfect a Swedish bistro with a touch of local flair. We love coming to Tre Kronor every time for breakfast, brunch or lunch.
google avatar

Xavier H.

Yelp
Tre Kronor is a cozy spot in a corner, to say the least. The popularity is definitely there since we had to wait a bit to be seated. We ended up exploring North Park College as a time waster and enjoyed the walk through their campus. The food was aesthetically pleasing all around from the waffle to hot chocolate. I would recommend the waffle since my French Toast looked so pretty yet lifeless at the same time. I feel like I'm just used to the fluffy/airy French Toast look and this was not the case. Hence, the Cinnabon tasted like soap. Although, I think because of the busy day the plate may have been just washed and thrown back out. Overall, Tre Kronor was okay for the price and I would go back to try and redeem it.

Kim S.

Yelp
Was looking for a place to take my mom that would compare to the Swedish food we had when we were visiting family in Sweden. From the moment you walk in you are transported to a cute Swedish home feel with all the smells. Small menu but lots of goodness there. No reservations were needed however parking is a challenge.

Mary L.

Yelp
Love this place! The garden is a special, lovely setting for the warm weather, but the inside is simple and warm during the cooler months. We enjoyed the fixed-price menu options on a recent Sunday night, attending an intimate musical performance, Jaime O'Reilly's Roots Salon. The soup, chicken pot pie, warm roasted beets, and multicolored carrots were a hit at our table, and the dessert choices were delicious. Their chocolate mousse is perfect. The service is always welcoming and efficient. It's BYOB, so you might want to make a note.

Ted G.

Yelp
This little jewel was highly recommended by a friend. I went, and it exceeded my expectations! The place was clean. The food was outstanding. The service was good. What else could anyone want?!?
google avatar

Annette B.

Yelp
This is such a cute place! I love the fun murals on the wall and the welcoming decor. I had delicious Swedish pancakes here and also tacked on a side order of Swedish meatballs. My cappuccino was wonderful. As a bonus, they had some lovely Easter pastries--cardamom buns filled with marzipan and topped with a sweet whipped cream. Everything was superb!
google avatar

Yelp
Tre Konor has more or less reached institution status on Chicago's northwest side, and it's easy to see why. A cozy, kitschy, corner brunch joint with a strong Swedish/Norwegian influence, it's a very inviting spot. The food is really good, above average brunch and diner fare at very reasonable prices. The belgian waffle was flavorful and super fluffy, topped with an impressive heaping of berries, bananas, and whipped cream. The omelettes were also delicious, the eggs cooked perfectly and an impressive portion of greens and meat inside. The potatoes were also extremely tasty, just a light crisp on the skin and a light, flavorful inside. Delicious. But what makes this a three star review isn't the food. The food is great, a really well executed, large portion of fresh, flavorful food. The reason it's three stars is that it takes so long to get the food. The servers are lovely, super friendly. But, they're not always the most attentive. And they are clearly seating far too many people to accommodate a very small kitchen. We sat down at 10:52. We did not receive our food (a waffle, two omelettes) until 11:59. That would be an unreasonable wait time at a busy steakhouse, let alone a brunch place. Sure, you know that you're not getting your eggs in ten minutes on a busy Sunday...but an hour?! On top of it, during that wait, servers are nowhere to be found, at least out on the patio. No one is touching the table, checking if you need something while you wait, apologizing or at least acknowledging the wait time. If my wife and I weren't catching up with a good friend, I'm not sure we would have stayed the entire hour. The food is excellent, but this may be better served as a take out spot, rather than dedicating 90 minutes to what should be a half hour meal.
google avatar

Yasmaine F.

Yelp
This quaint little restaurant located on the corner is a hidden gem. I was really impressed with the personal service of the wait staff. The portions were all large. The desserts or pastries were decadent. I had the corn beef hash with eggs. It was delicious homemade wonderfully cooked and flavored. My friends had the waffle with fruit, it was tasty as well. My other friend had the quiche. I was large and fluffy and filled with veggies. There was a great fruit salad served on the side. The waitstaff was friendly and helpful while ordering. My coffee never ran low. This cute spot is a must revisit again.

Joseph C.

Yelp
Today was the best day of my life tbh. My server Uli or should I say Cooli gave me 5 star service. Man, those cinnamon rolls really slap and the coffee here wakes me up better than a cold shower during a fire drill.

Kat

Yelp
Have been here several times, and the brunch food is excellent, the back patio is a lovely spot for brunch, but service can be REALLY uneven. I was also a little underwhelmed by the non-brunch menu, but I do like that it seems to change regularly, and the ambiance is good.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
My favorite place to dine. Simple, delicious, good portioned foods. Service was wonderful, and it's a cute area with a nice outdoor area in the back. I also love to hop next door to the huge Swedish trinket shop to look for cute little gifts. Would recommend highly to try!
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
This was the first stop for my friend and I after we landed in Chicago in the morning. Food was a must and this place sounded fantastic. The decor was adorable. There were so many people that seemed to frequent the place (friend and I definitely got there before the rush). Plus the ladies at the table over from ours had great stories that we shamelessly spied on. But on to the food. I got the Oslo Omelette - quite delicious and the bacon. Why did the bacon cost $4.50? I dont know but I was on vacation. Thick bacon but yea... My friend got a sandwich (don't remember what it was and it seems like it's gone from the menu for the season) and she quite liked it. She also got a side of a cucumber salad that she was a big fan. Overall great place for breakfast/brunch.
google avatar

Mandy S.

Yelp
Best dang French Toast I have ever had. Was torn between trying that and their pancakes, but was encouraged to try the French Toast by our waiter. Really enjoyed the orange zest in the toast's batter and in the butter used-- added the right amount of delightful flavor. The potatoes my partner had with his eggs were great. Smallish portions, but the coziness of the restaurant was worth it-- family friendly and would come again next time I'm staying in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Andrew E.

Yelp
Love the food. Somehow, they never have a record of my reservation when I arrive. Luckily, the last time, we had only to wait 10 minutes. Other times we didn't wait. Getting refills on coffee has always been a struggle. The staff are perfectly friendly, just not great attention. Again, I love the food well enough to keep us returning.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
I've been here more than once and I love this place. Their menus are handwritten which is hard to find these days! Their food is also fabulous. I've had their quiche and Swedish pancakes. Both are delicious but the quiche...is so filling. I've never had a better quiche in my life. Their pastries - if you're in doubt, order that sh*t! It arrived hella hot, straight out of the oven hot, but holy cow was it marvelous. If they opened up a bakery, I'd happily sell my soul for all the pastries.
google avatar

Garo H.

Yelp
I love this place!! It's near my house so I can walk there. The food is great too. A must visit. The restaurant prices are not that bad. Trying it out is all I can say!! Love the taste of the food.
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
Unique Scandinavian options mixed in with some stand by classics. Tasty meatballs and speciality sausages.
google avatar

Melia F.

Yelp
DO NOT COME HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE TIME TO WASTE!! We came in about 12:45 and after being sat no one came up to us again until about 1. After ordering we got our drinks about 1:15 and our food didn't come out at all, we ended up leaving at 2 and STILL NOTHING. All while other tables that were sat after us were fully attended to and served before us. When I went up to cancel and leave the server said "yeah I don't blame you"??? Unreal. Super cute spot, but the inattentive service and long for no reason wait times will cause me to never come back.
google avatar

Madeleine B.

Yelp
We came on a Sunday afternoon and waited for about 20 min and sat on the patio. The patio is beautiful! Highly recommend. We got the mushroom spinach quiche, tuna salad, open faced Norwegian meatball sandwich, and shared some pastries: cardamom knot, cinnamon roll (not pictured), and salted caramel danish. I tried some of the quiche and it was wonderful. The meatballs were great too. My favorite of the pastries was the cardamom knot, but the cinnamon roll was a close second.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
I came here again on a weekday evening to have a late meal with a girl friend. We sat ourselves inside and it wasn't crowded like it typically is for brunch, which was nice for a catch-up. The server was very sweet and put on a fresh pot of coffee for me when I stepped in at 5 pm. We weren't feeling particularly peckish, so we decided to get a cup of soup and share an appetizer. I loved the carrot dill soup. I was SO tempted to order a second cup. Instead, we split an appetizer of crab cakes. Of course, we capitulated and couldn't stop at soup and an appetizer. We each ordered a dessert: I had a delicious blueberry purée while my friend had a lemon tart. We were very pleased at the end of our meal.

Yelp
Very quaint cafe. Great sausages. Great Swedish pancakes. Live in the neighborhood and appreciate they are here.
google avatar

Marcin W.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere along with super friendly staff. Enjoyed a delicious brunch. Would highly recommend giving it a try. Had the corned beef hash. Decent size portion and hit the spot completely.

Yelp
Outdoor seating is available in summer time with about 10 tables sitting 2-4 people. It is a small garden seating arrnagement, surrounded by plants, which is great, but there will be many fruit flies. You enter from their side entrance on N Spaulding Ave during summer days. It's best to go early for breakfast otherwise you'll wait a bit. On a Friday morning, there were already 6 tables taken right at opening at 9am. Homemade Quiche (today's specials were broccoli cheddar or salmon dill which is pricey but delicious) is available even during breakfast time (it's on the lunch menu). Swedish pancakes were very tasty, just small portions. Ticket time was about 20 min for breakfast. Nice service overall, but very little conversation. -1 star for value/amount of food and many fruit flies, but very good food
google avatar

Leif Y.

Yelp
Fantastic service! And great food much better service than another Swedish restaurant across town

Joel P.

Yelp
Food is good and service but what was rlly bad is that the servers kept asking if we wanted a fruit cup and i decided to get one. A small fruit cup with 1-2 pieces of pineapple, melon, watermelon, strawberries, and grapes was almost $6 that's insane....

Tracy M.

Yelp
My absolute favorite breakfast place in the city! The waffle is my go to along with the corned beef hash.
google avatar

Catherine R.

Yelp
The best quiche I've ever had! The service was first class, and due to the nice weather we were able to enjoy the garden. We'll definitely be back!

Melissa K.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place with my grandma for quite some time. When something is this good, there's really no reason to change things up. The inside is super cute, and always incredibly packed. We went a little after typical brunch times - closer to their closing time (but not so close that we were those rude people keeping the employees from closing, mind you.) and found that this was probably the best time to go. There are tables in every possible spot to maximize this tiny place. If personal space is your thing, Tre Kronor is probably not going to make you happy. The one thing that does rightly change is the menu. Based on different factors (I'm sure), there are different specials each time we go. I had a salmon benedict which was fantastic. Just the right amount of portion without being insanely stuffed. Grandma got the quiche and I'm now regretting not taking a bite when she offered - she said it's consistently great.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
Tre Kronor is great. It's right by campus and is an easy spot to go out for brunch with friends or when your family visits. The interior is cozy and the outdoor garden seating area is beautiful! My favorite place to eat. Their menu is a little small, but the Swedish pancakes are always my go to! The staff are all very nice and if you're in the area I definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Excellent. Five stars all around. From the service, to the atmosphere, to the food. I recommend the omelettes, the sausage, and the quiches. The staff is kind, attentive, and hilarious. Get the Kobenhaven Omelette!
