Tre Konor has more or less reached institution status on Chicago's northwest side, and it's easy to see why. A cozy, kitschy, corner brunch joint with a strong Swedish/Norwegian influence, it's a very inviting spot.
The food is really good, above average brunch and diner fare at very reasonable prices. The belgian waffle was flavorful and super fluffy, topped with an impressive heaping of berries, bananas, and whipped cream. The omelettes were also delicious, the eggs cooked perfectly and an impressive portion of greens and meat inside. The potatoes were also extremely tasty, just a light crisp on the skin and a light, flavorful inside. Delicious.
But what makes this a three star review isn't the food. The food is great, a really well executed, large portion of fresh, flavorful food. The reason it's three stars is that it takes so long to get the food.
The servers are lovely, super friendly. But, they're not always the most attentive. And they are clearly seating far too many people to accommodate a very small kitchen.
We sat down at 10:52. We did not receive our food (a waffle, two omelettes) until 11:59. That would be an unreasonable wait time at a busy steakhouse, let alone a brunch place. Sure, you know that you're not getting your eggs in ten minutes on a busy Sunday...but an hour?!
On top of it, during that wait, servers are nowhere to be found, at least out on the patio. No one is touching the table, checking if you need something while you wait, apologizing or at least acknowledging the wait time. If my wife and I weren't catching up with a good friend, I'm not sure we would have stayed the entire hour.
The food is excellent, but this may be better served as a take out spot, rather than dedicating 90 minutes to what should be a half hour meal.
