"MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, Michelin Guide California 2019In San Francisco, a city where economics is on everybody’s mind, Tsubasa offers an opportunity to eat well for (a little) less. At this Hayes Valley sushi-ya, the omakase is available at several price points, or you can order a la carte. The fish is shipped in from Japan and prepared in a more traditional Edomae style." - The MICHELIN Guide

"Tsubasa is a small sushi spot in Hayes Valley. The dining room is pretty bare, but that just makes it easier to concentrate on their great food. The nigiri is good, but we always focus on the rolls here - especially the negi torro that’s mostly tuna and the S.T.A.S.H. roll that’s filled with spicy tuna and topped with seared yellowtail." - Will Kamensky

Update: I love this place so much. Today, Peter really made my uni dreams come true in SF! The mutha fkn best! Perfect sushi spot in Hayes Valley. They offer omakase, a la cart, sushi rolls and more. Fresh selection of fish. The uni is good. The ice cream is good. Staff is nice and accommodating. Head Chef Peter is really funny! All the other chefs are really nice too.

Great sushi. Then sushi rolls are simple clean and allow the fish to be the star. True sushi lovers should most definitely add this place on your list to visit. The cucumber salad is made fresh daily in house and you can taste it. The tempura adds great texture to the rolls but is not over whelming like most places. I I highly recommend to any sushi lover.

We ordered Omakase with 12 piece, fish was really fresh and cost is reasonable. The 2 nigiri with uni were very delicious and impressive. I really enjoyed both food and service here. Highly recommend for reservations, they didn't have much space and all table are reserved in advance.

This restaurant is a very decent place for friends gathering together. The atmosphere is nice. Servers control the pace of food serving really well. For the nigiris themselves, they performed just at the price they were. Some of the course is okay but not very impressive. Like the fatty tuna nigiri, the sashimi itself it’s not a whole piece but instead 3or4 separate small pieces combining together. Also, the salmon roe has a strong sake taste(some people might not like that strong taste). Overall, the food is tasty and worth a try.

Overall nice. Fish is good quality, service is friendly. We had a few rolls, a few pieces of nigiri, and some appetizers. The nigiri were all missing something in their seasoning (not up to omakase style preparation, but better than average). Standouts were the chawanmushi with uni and the torotaku. The futomaki was tasty but a bit too loosely wrapped. The juicy scallop roll was a bit too monotonous in texture (could have used a crunch). We also felt like the service was actually a bit rushed (maybe because it was a slow night?) -- everything came out very quickly. All in all a good meal with some room for improvement.

Delicious sushi put together with skill and care. I was happy with everything down to the miso soup and matcha ice cream! Service was super friendly and helpful.

The mushroom tempura is good. But the sushi was so so. The eel was bony and hard to eat. Uni and snow crab are great!
