The 38 Best Pittsburgh Restaurants | Eater DC

"This suburban Indian restaurant is one of the region’s oldest vegetarian establishments. The bustling dining room at Udipi resembles a neighborhood diner, but instead of plates of eggs and hash browns, it’s an assemblage of dishes from southern India’s Tuluva-Mangalorean and Andhra cuisines. The main draws are dosas, fermented rice, and lentil batter griddled into yard-long crepes stuffed with potatoes, onions, and other ingredients. Sambahr (lentil and vegetable soup), deluxe thali platter, and chili padoka are among other favorite dishes." - Melissa McCart

The 19 Best Restaurants In Pittsburgh 2024

"It’s not easy to find South Indian vegetarian dishes in Pittsburgh. This is why we love Udipi, a casual spot that’s about a 20-minute drive from downtown. The gobi manchurian alone is worth filling up your gas tank, as you’ll get a huge plate of perfectly roasted cauliflowers tossed in a sweet, tangy Indo-Chinese sauce. Pile into the red leather booths with friends and order one of their 21 dosa varieties, filled with things like potatoes and spicy Andhra chutney or some okra bhindi masala—our favorite of the 18 curries that pairs perfectly with the city’s puffiest bhatura bread" - elaine zedack, quayla allen

Udipi Cafe Review - Monroeville - Pittsburgh - The Infatuation

"When you walk into Everyday, you'll see a lineup of their staff hand-pulling fresh noodles behind a window. We would definitely watch this daily if they set up a livestream, but we're also here all the time—and so is everybody else in Squirrel Hill. There may be a bit of a wait to sit down, but stick it out, because pretty much everything here is delicious. Start with the wood ear mushroom and garlic-marinated tofu skin appetizer, and then tack on some hot spicy wonton noodles that are piled with cilantro and scallions. While the noodles here are excellent, it’s the soup dumplings that keep us coming back, specifically the classic pork and the shrimp and loofah ones. After you eat, explore one of the bookstores on Forbes Avenue, and hit a post-lunch matinee around the corner at the Manor Theater." - Quayla Allen

A no‑frills institution for vegetarian South Indian cooking—dosas, uttapam, thali—where staff are well‑versed in vegan orders. Frequently praised by local food writers for generous portions and authentic flavors, it’s worth the short drive from the city.

The ambience wasn’t great, and the service was good. The Paneer Makhni was disappointing (2/5), and the butter naan didn’t taste good. The poori was too thick, and the curry that came with it was average. The Mysore Masala Dosa was alright( no peanut chutney is served here). The yogurt rice had a bit of a spicy kick but was actually tasty. One major downside— the restroom definitely needs a lot of attention.

Udupi Cafe – A Culinary Delight** Our visit to Udupi Cafe was an exceptional experience that left us thoroughly impressed and satisfied. **Service:** The service was wonderful—efficient, warm, and attentive. The staff ensured every part of our dining experience was seamless, making us feel truly valued. **Food Quality:** The dishes were nothing short of perfection. We sampled a delightful array, including dosa, pongal, uttapam, poori, and kesari. Each dish was super hot, fresh, and prepared with remarkable precision and authenticity. The flavors were vibrant and incredibly satisfying. **Standout Items:** The sambar and chutney deserve special mention for their delicious, comforting taste. Both complemented the dishes beautifully, adding to the overall experience. Udupi Cafe has mastered the art of blending excellent service with incredible food quality. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone craving authentic and flawlessly executed South Indian cuisine. We left with full hearts and even fuller stomachs!

The butter masala dosa was good, the cheese dosa was okay. But I would take just plain dosa next time. The mango lassi was very good. The cafe has a cozy vibe which we liked.

We had a very disappointing experience dining at Udipi Cafe in Pittsburgh. As fans of South Indian cuisine, we were really looking forward to the meal—but sadly, it did not meet expectations in any way. We ordered the Puri with Aloo Curry, an Onion-Tomato Uthappam, and a Lassi—but everything was below average. The flavors were bland, the presentation was unappealing, and the freshness was questionable. For a place known for vegetarian South Indian dishes, this was a big letdown. To make things worse, the food was overpriced for the quality we received. The service wasn’t great either—staff seemed uninterested, and we didn’t feel very welcome or attended to throughout the meal. Overall, it was not the kind of experience we expected. Between the disappointing food, high prices, and poor service, we left feeling unsatisfied and frustrated. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning and wouldn’t recommend it to others based on our visit.

The food is decent, with nearly everything we ordered arriving hot, delicious, and beautifully presented. Located in a prime spot near the Andar Temple, it’s the perfect place to grab a meal after darshanam. The restaurant offers a great setting for enjoying a variety of dishes with family. While one staff member may give off a slightly sketchy vibe, the rest of the team is friendly and attentive, ensuring that service is usually quick and efficient. Overall, a great place to unwind and enjoy a satisfying meal.

**⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - A True Gem of Authentic Indian Cuisine!** If you're near Pittsburgh, a visit to UDUPI Cafe is an absolute must! Known for being the only place in the area offering truly authentic Indian food, this restaurant is a haven for lovers of bold, flavorful dishes. Their dosas are a standout—crispy, perfectly spiced, and utterly satisfying. The Chana Bhatura is another favorite, with its fluffy bread and flavorful chickpea curry. The extensive menu is packed with classic Indian flavors, offering something for everyone to relish. UDUPI Cafe brings a slice of India to Pittsburgh, ensuring a dining experience you won't soon forget!

Google
Not sure what people are complaining about, the food was excellent, service was great and the prices were decent. We tried the poori with sabji, vada, Mysore masala dosa, pav bhaji and filter coffee. Everything was top notch. Kids loved the mildly spiced pav bhaji. I wanted to try everything on their menu and craved it for dinner that day. Wish people appreciate that we have a choice of good vegetarian food near the temple considering the temple itself has limited food options in their cafeteria.

Yelp
Food- 5/5. The dhosa with potato's and curries are amazing. I think about them often, and enjoyed their crunchy crepe texture. Great value and taste. Get The DHOSA. Ambiance 3/5. Fine, nothing special. Service 5/5. The servers were great, and the food came out very quickly. 5 - I will seek this restaurant out and convince skeptical friends to eat here. 4 - I often eat here or would be happy eating here. 3 - if someone in my group wants to go here, why not? 2 - I will take some convincing to go back. 1 - You cannot convince me to go back.

Yelp
Fun fact: Udipi cafe was the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Pittsburgh 8 years ago, and I hadn't been back since so I knew it was time! Let me tell you, everything tasted even better than I remembered!! I got the aloo gobi (potatoes and cauliflower in curry) and butter naan. Heavenly!! Service is quick and staff is so nice. It's a little off the beaten path but so worth it. I need to start going to this area of the city more so I can have an excuse to eat here more often. I will be dreaming about this goodness all night tonight.

Yelp
Right-sized delicious portions of food. My partner and I each ordered a meal, and the server quickly sensed we were going to share and brought over additional spoons for each of us. The raita was a nice and cooling accompaniment, and the pickle was a bit spicy, but paired well with our orders. The garlic naan was warm and soft

Yelp
I stopped by one day just on a whim. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a wide variety of some of the tastiest Indian cuisine, especially the Samosa. The service was great. I did take out and so enjoyed all the rich flavors made me think I was at my dear friends house who makes the best authentic in Indian food.

Yelp
I've been meaning to try Udipi for a while and I am glad I finally did! They were very helpful and accommodating for our large group, filling our waters frequently and ensuring we had what we needed. I enjoyed the appetizer platter and the Mysore masala dosa was delicious. I'd love to try some other items as well.

Yelp
Worth all the hype! This little hole in the wall mom and pop shop may not appear to be much on the outside...but the food is incredible. As soon as I stepped out of my car I was hit with a wonderful smell of curry, seasonings, and bread. I was soo excited!! I got the appetizer sampler to try a little of everything and it was amazing!! I also got garlic nan which was incredible, and the Mysore Masala Dosa which I haven't tried yet because I got wayy too stuffed - looks fantastic. Overall, I can't wait to be back! Love authentic restaurants

Yelp
We came on a Saturday evening, so it may have been busier than usual, since the food was not quick to come out. We ordered a Chili Paneer Dry (appetizer), 'Tomatoes, Chili & Onion Uthappam', Mysore Masala Dosa, and a Spicy Andhra Sada Dosa. The Chili Paneer Dry tasted ok, but funnily enough, the Chili Paneer *Dry* was actually more wet than expected. I don't know how well Indo-Chinese is done here. Both the dosas were not as crispy as we would like, and they were just ok. The masala in the dosa was also just ok. The Uthappam tasted the best, but even that could've been improved. The dosas and uthappam came out with sambar and coconut chutney. I wish they also provided more chutneys. Sambar was also not that impressive, though the spice level was nice. We always love a South Indian vegetarian restaurant, so we may likely come back. But our experience paled in comparison to other South Indian vegetarian restaurants in other cities, like NY's Sarvana Bhavan. It might just have been too busy a time causing the lack of great quality and slow service. Like any other similar restaurant, ambiance was nothing worthy of mention. There is always room for improvement! Given that the restaurant is close to the Hindu temple, it will always come in useful though.

Yelp
A great South Indian pure vegetarian spot in Monroeville (way out in the sticks, so it's a bit of a drive). The eggplant dish I got from the photo doesn't look like much, but the spice and flavor were incredible (and it will fill you up too; I'm glad I didn't order bread because there would not have been room!) The saffron vermicelli dessert was warm and comforting too. The restaurant was clean and service was pretty decent too so no complaints there. It's a bit far from where I live but next time I happen to be back in Monroeville, I'll pay a visit to try some other dishes. Great place!

Yelp
Finally found one of the best vegetarian Indian spot in town. This hits the spot for me and brings me back home. Everything was cooked to perfection! Staff are super friendly and good are served quickly. This would a typical mom and pop restaurant decor. No frills and people usually go there for its food. Super convenient for temple goers nearby. The food we ordered was based off our friend's recommendation. I would totally go back there for it all again.

Yelp
This place is the best south Indian food I have had in the US! Having gone to Pittsburgh for grad school, this was a go to spot for me whenever I missed home, so it was on the top of my list when I got back here with my wife for a trip. The ambience of the place is of a very typical south Indian restaurant. Nothing showy or flashy, just what is necessary for a nice clean meal. We went here right after it opened so it was fairly empty (it gets super duper busy for lunch), to our luck! We ordered the mango lassi, the tomato onion and chilli uthappam and the andhra masala dosa. As always and as expected the food was perfectly on point! The uthappam was soft and fluffy while the dosa was nice crispy and spicy. The sambhar had the perfect tangy to spicy ratio and everything came together with the coconut chutney. As with any south indian meal we washed all down with a filter coffee in the end and jad an amazing time.

Yelp
After always reading about Udipi in PGH Magazine and after hearing rave reviews from a good friend, I knew I needed to try Udipi out. Turns out, the restaurant is only 5 mins from my brother's work, so on a recent visit back home, we stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night. If you didn't know to look for Udipi, you would definitely miss it - it's located in an unassuming storefront right off the highway with some signage but not obnoxious advertisement. We found a parking spot, and for a party of 3, we were easily seated despite it seeming pretty busy. The restaurant itself is no-frills - basic booths with some artwork on the wall, nothing too fancy (honestly feels a little diner-esque). They do pack a good number of people in there - the seating went back much further than originally met the eye. Our server was attentive and helpful, providing suggestions and honesty in regards to the spiciness of the dishes. The menu is quite extensive - many, many different options to pick from! Based on recommendations from friends and from the Yelp reviews, we started with the idli and each ordered a different dosa. The idli was tasty - the patties were hearty yet fluffy, and the spicy sambhar was nicely balanced with the relatively cool coconut chutney. It was a good starter! For dosas...they had sooo many to pick from! It was a tough decision, but I opted for the spring dosa, my husband for the spicy andhra masala dosa, and my brother for the mysore masala dosa. Each was presented with a crispy case and very flavorful fillings. I loved the veggies in mine - they were a great consistency with not-to-spicy of flavor that blended well with the potatoes. My husband's and brother's dosas were definitely spicier, but they enjoyed their respective options. This was my first time having a "real" dosa (previously ordered one for takeout from another location, but the integrity got a little compromised so it was a different experience), and I was quite pleased! The dosas were enough to round out our meals, but I am still very intrigued by other menu items, including the highly praised mango lassi. For the price point, quality, and quantity of food, you can't go wrong with Udipi! There is something for everyone, and you won't even notice the lacking meat options on the menu. Really glad I finally had a chance to check it out, and I'm already looking forward to a return trip!

Yelp
We went his for our breakfast, and what a filling meal it was! The place is a small looking restaurant just off the road, and can be missed easily. But on the inside, the place has ample seating and a wide menu to choose from. After much deliberation and consultation with our server, we decided to start our meal with Mango Lassi, Spicy Andhra Masala Dosa, and a tomato, chilli, and onion uttapam. The portion size of each dish is pretty good. I was hardly able to finish my uttapam in one go, and had to pack some for later. The mango lassi was thick and creamy, while the main dishes were spicy as promised and full of flavour. At the end we ordered a filter coffee to nicely wrap our breakfast with a pretty bow. All in all, the meal was very yummy and reminded me of food back in India. I would definitely recommend!

Yelp
Five of us stopped by Udipi on a Sunday morning right when they opened at 11:30am. Driving up to the restaurant, it looks very unassuming and hole in the wall like. We got our food very quickly. I will note, it's vegetarian South Indian food, which is fairly different from what you think of as your typical Indian food that is North Indian. All of our dishes were pretty good. Thankfully, my friend is Indian and she knew what to order because I had no clue what anything was. Overall, it was a nice experience with authentic South Indian food and I would recommend it if that your thing!

Yelp
This restaurant is located between 3 temples in the Pittsburgh area. The temples include Sai Baba Temple, venkateshwara Temple, and the Jain temple. We chose this place based on my friends recommendation, location (convenience), and to please my dad, who was craving for some Indian food. The place was diversified and crowded with an equal distribution of South Asians, Middle Eastern, and Caucasians. The food, which included a blend of chaat (indian comfort food), soup, South Indian and indo Chinese, was good. I loved the chaat, and the gobi manchurian was good, but I have had better South Indian food, especially the chutney and idly. The restaurant was crowded. The service was good. They took a Lil longer to take the order, but the food arrived fairly quickly. They do have some combos, but the price for combo vs. Ordering individually was a mere dollar difference. The restaurant makes you feel like eating in an old local restaurant in India. It's not all about ambiance when you see the crowd at this restaurant.
google avatar

Suchita S.

Yelp
The food is decent and service nice. I wouldn't go here for the ambiance but for the food. I ordered the channa bhatura. The portion size was generous. The channa was nicely spiced and the bhatura was lovely and crispy. I also got the mango lassi. I wish it were slightly tangy-er but it was nonetheless very nice. Also had catering done via udupi for my brothers wedding at the SV temple. The breakfast: kesari, vada, idli, chutney we're great. I didn't care much for the sambar Lunch: nice curd rice, pickle, poori, Lima bean pooriyal, gulab jamun and Payasam. I didn't like the rasam or sambar that much.

Yelp
Vegetarian Southern Indian Authentic Menu. Inexpensive and consistently delicious. Hidden on Old Wm Penn Hwy, but worth the "detour"! Nothing fancy inside, but we almost always take-away. Curried Veggies and dhosa with potatoes are my favorite, but we have never had a bad meal from here.

Sarita B.

Yelp
Excellent food. As a South Indian, I have to say this was very authentic. Would come again.
google avatar

Cara D.

Yelp
This is an UNBELIEVABLE Indian restaurant. I'm from NYC and am totally impressed by the food here. It is a mom and pop spot and very authentic. The flavors are incredible. If I'm back in Pittsburgh I will absolutely come back.
google avatar

Rim G.

Yelp
Good southern Indian food. This is my second time. The first time I tried thali and thought it was mediocre. This time, my friends and I tried Dosai and Medhu Vada and other meals. My favorite meals are Chana Batura and Rasam. I like that they provided small water bottles. And their coffee is tasty as well. The place is usually crowded. Service is decent. You would have to pay at the counter. I would definitely go back.

T S.

Yelp
Traveled to Pittsburgh so we thought we'd find an Indian restaurant.. This is an authentic experience. The place is off the beaten path, so you have to be going there to find it. But it's totally worth the trip. Fried pepper pakoras will knock your socks off. All the dishes we had were authentic and well prepared And the cost is very reasonable due to the fact that it's a no frills place. You go there for a good meal, good service , good price. Highly recommended
google avatar

Yelp
Authentic Indian vegetarian food that's always fantastic. They always adjust the heat level per our preference... we are never disappointed here. And the naan is so good we could make a meal on just that.

Yelp
I wish that I could give them five stars, however, their Bisi Bele entree was way too spicy. My mouth was on fire - reminds me of the song by the Pointer Sisters. I saw plenty of people get the dosa rice crepes, and those didn't look spicy at all. I should have gotten a dosa crepe, however, Bisi Bele is the local dish of the Udipi (Udupi?) part of India, so that's what I got. Indian food isn't actually supposed to be spicy. Not in the Midwest anyway. They have a store next door where they sell Indian jewelry from Rajasthan. Pretty but I can only wear real gold plated jewelry or sterling silver because I have a nickel allergy. This jewelry is made of brass, and I don't know if I'm allergic to it. I bought a pair of earrings for twenty bucks. If I'm allergic to brass, I'll give them to my cleaning lady. They also sell Indian movie DVDs next door. I didn't recognize any of them. The last Indian movie that I saw was Lagaan and that was like a decade or two decades ago.
google avatar

Rachel O.

Yelp
We came here on a Friday. I got the lunch special and they forgot to bring my dosa. The dosa my husband got came with no filing. Tasty food, bad diarrhea.
google avatar

Yelp
Now delivering through DoorDash and Caviar! Praise be. I've been a long time fan of Udipi Cafe. The place is off the beaten path and ain't much to look at from the outside, but the food is always top notch. I appreciate their extensive all-vegetarian menu, but as a creature of habit I almost always order the same things: samosas, baigan KA bharta (eggplant), and bhindi masala (okra). It's enough for 4 people, so don't order it all at the same time unless you like leftovers (it keeps well). Oh, the paratha, bhatura, and garlic naan breads are all delicious, so there's no wrong choice when it comes to selecting your side of carbs. The best part is that Udipi's finally hooked up with some delivery platforms, so you can now get all that goodness delivered to your doorstop. Who feels like Indian tonight?!

Yelp
tl;dr: Busy small restaurant on the side of a highway that serves authentic delicious south Indian food. Highly recommend! ~~~~ Finally tried this place after eyeing it for a while and was not disappointed! First thing to note is that it is on the side of the highway with a gravel parking lot. Don't let that deter you though. It's so worth it. The place was packed with a constant flow of folks in/out which is always a good sign. I have been craving authentic South Indian food to remind me of home, so I was super pleased to find this place. The menu is extensive with really anything you could wish for. Endless Dosa options and they have Thali! It's all vegan/vegetarian. We ordered samosa, regular thali, and paper masala dosa. I also got mango lassi which was delicious. Definitely ordered way too much food for the 2 of us and could have split 1 thali, but I got excited. It was worth it. The food is incredible and so so authentic which made me so happy. You can eat with your hands if you are comfortable which is a huge plus since that's not something I feel comfortable doing many places but seemed to be the norm here...another plus towards how authentic it is. The orders are decently sized so you can definitely split with another person. Also you get tea or coffee after your meal. They take card on orders over $15 and have an ATM. Overall, highly recommend for authentic South Indian food in PGH!

Yelp
Udipi came very highly recommended to me and it did not disappoint. The food was INCREDIBLE, the portions were huge, and the prices were more than reasonable. I love that the restaurant is vegetarian, even though I'm not strictly, it allowed me to try things I wouldn't normally try. My favorite was the Aloo Gobi and garlic naan.

Yelp
My go to place for South Indian in Pittsburgh. 100% Vegetarian They have a good list of food options on the menu with different spice levels. Good quality and quantity. Service is great and the food is well priced. Parking- They have a lot of parking space available I recommend.

Yelp
Amazing, authentic vegetarian South Indian cuisine. Fast and friendly waiters. It's a regular for us when in the area. Casual, simple, family friendly atmosphere

Yelp
This was one of the best dining experiences. my husband and I have had in a long time. It was partly the staff, who were friendly and introduced us to foods on the menu we weren't familiar with, encouraging us to try them. The menu ventures well beyond your typical Indian restaurant in the US-- there were many foods I had not heard of before. It was partly the clientele, all of whom were South Asians enjoying meals with their families. It was informative to see what dishes they were ordering and fun to be there with people young and old on a weekend afternoon. And then, of course, the food was fantastic. We are new vegetarians, and we're so thrilled to find a restaurant to add to our list that creates so much delicious vegetarian food. Couldn't be happier with the experience.
google avatar

Dinesh S.

Yelp
Awesome food, especially if you are a South Indian you would love the menu and taste. I tried mysore masala dosa with madras filter coffee, it tasted amazing!
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
This is one of the best South Indian restaurants. The veg meal anl, dosas, and idli are fabulous. It feels like traveling to India when you step inside this place, including the ratio of servers to customers with the manager sitting in the corner watching everything. Go here if you want great South Indian veg food, but don't need frills.

Ravi V.

Yelp
We went to the place after temple visit with no expectations. The place was crowded due to the weekend and week before schools beginning. But the lady was able to accommodate us right away with a BIG smile. We got Satt dosa and Poori along with filter coffee. Portions were big and tasty with less oil/ghee. I was amazed how the entire family working there especially teenage kids.
google avatar

Rashmin D.

Yelp
After the nearby temple, visited this restaurant. Friends suggested this place. Food: idali, dosa, thali, dahi vada. Food was ok. Not that great. Chutney was also ok. Restroom: not clean and not maintained. Seating: indoor only. 8-10 tables. Small place. I feel like maybe in past it was good but now not putting effort. Try a different restaurant. If you have no options then can come.
google avatar

Yelp
Udipi is one of the Pittsburgh area's treasures, especially for vegetarians who like spicy Indian food. We've been going here for years and it's always the same--delicious food for not too much money. Our favorites are the Chana Bhatura, the Spring Dosa, and the Vegetable Uttapam. But I don't think I've ever been disappointed with anything I've gotten there. The ambiance and service are very casual, so don't go expecting a fine dining experience. But if you like vegetarian Indian food, you will be very happy here.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
I knew this place was going to be good based on the smell coming from the parking lot! The wait staff is not super attentive so you may want to consider getting your own menu and approaching them yourself, especially if it is somewhat crowded. Most of the choices here are gluten free and vegan and if a selection is not vegan or gluten free it says "no vegan" or "no gluten free" next to the option. It helps that they have a very detailed and extensive menu because the waiters here have a lot of difficulty communicating in English. With that said, the food is very authentic and heavily spiced in all the right ways. There is a good amount of heat in their spices so if you don't like spicy food you may want to consider going somewhere else. I ended up ordering the Palak Panner (spinach and cheese) which is a favorite of mine and also the Bisi Bele Bhath (which has lentils, vegetables and rice) based on the recommendations from the waiter. Together it cost about 20 dollars which felt very reasonable to me considering I hot two entrees for what would be the cost of one at some other places. I honestly enjoyed the Palak Paneer a lot more than the Bisi Bele Bhath. The rice dish was still okay but I thought it was going to have a lot more lentils and vegetables than it did. The vegetables were more like a condiment than a substantial part of the dish. It was mostly just heavily flavored rice so I kind of feel like the peanuts they added to it saved it from being way too starchy. This is my one friends favorite restaurant and she only eats Krishna food for the most part so I feel like that says something. It is also close to the Temple which is convenient for devotees. Although I did enjoy the one meal I am not sure I would go out of my way to come here again. I still appreciate it for what it is and there is so much on the menu that I am quite curious about a lot of the other dishes.

Yelp
Food is great. Best place for south indian tiffins. Their Rava dosa is a must try. Service is good. Ambiance is decent.

Yelp
Excellent food as always! This is home food for me. Heavy nostalgia. The food was great, everyone loved it. Even my lil 3yr old ate an entire plain dosa. The chennai masala tea was exactly how its supposed to taste. I had the mysore masala dosa& my husband had the onion dosa. We loved it. Only thing I'd say is the onions in the onion dosa were raw onions. But its all delish! Ordered idli, medhu vada, bisibelebath& tea for to-go as well. Food is wonderful! We've ordered food from here many, many, mannnyyyyy times for pick up, so this was the first time we sat there to enjoy a meal as a family. Very clean restaurant. Service was good, they were so sooo nice! Loved chatting with them, I felt I was back home lol. Cant be anymore happier here.

Yelp
You won't be wowed by the location or the dining room experience. You come for the most delicious vegan & vegetarian Indian food I've had in a long time .

Yelp
We haven't been there in years. They've remodeled and upgraded. Good food and prices. Very busy, worth the wait.

Yelp
This place is the best around. Just thinking about it makes me hungry. Many vegan options. Everything is great. I will say if I didn't know it was there I would just drive right by because of the nondescript location.

Yelp
I dined at this restaurant twice because of its proximity to the SV. Temple. The first time, I ordered dahi batata puri which taste stale because of the sev in it. My mother however, loved the idly. I also had mango milkshake, which tasted good but was too thin in consistency. The second time around here, we ordered idly, methu vada and onion rava dosa. All of these tasted mediocre. Chai had a strong cardamom flavor and was too dilute. I can say that I've had better South Indian food in USA, so I get really picky. You can try out this place once, to see if it suits your taste buds. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not too keen to go here again.

Yelp
I never thought I would like the food from India, but Udipi changed my mind! It was delicious! Will definitely go back!

Yelp
Stopped in here for dosas during my trip to Pittsburgh. Unfortunately the food made me sick and experienced some casual racism. One of the server was extremely rude and seemed upset that I had a white partner (I'm Indian). It took several requests to get the items we asked for. Then he would just throw it on the table while giving me angry death stares. When he sat us at the table, he threw menus on the table, which caused the utensils to flip out of place, and he just walked away without a word. It was a really bizarre experience that he seemed to be the only one with this problem. The anger and rudeness seemed to be aimed at me, he wouldn't even acknowledge (or look at) my partner. The owners or managers (wasn't sure of their titles or status) seemed nice and I didn't sense the same animosity from them, so we just left without saying anything or creating a scene while they were very busy. But I def wouldn't return again, frankly, if there were no other guests in the restaurants, I would have felt unsafe with this man's behavior.

Yelp
This review only speaks to takeout. I have eaten in the restaurant once or twice, but not in a while. The restaurant itself is small and not much to look at. This is one of our go-tos for takeout, when things are busy or I just need a night off for cooking. We have our favorite dishes but here and there mix it up, especially if we are eating with friends and ordering more dishes. We started with an order of samosas. These are my boyfriends favorite. They are a crispy fried dumpling and filled with potatoes, peas, and spices. They come with a tamarind sauce, which is so good and always gets finished. The other sauce is an herb sauce with some kick to it. I actually use the extra to make salad dressing sometimes. Next we got an order of Chana palak. It's a mixture of chickpeas and spinach which is delicious and addictive. This dish isn't spicy but it is really flavorful. Finally we got an order of aloo gobi. It's a mixture of chunks of potato and cauliflower. The sauce it comes in has a little bit of a kick (though this time a little more than usual). The sauce is creamy and so good. Just pour the sauce all over your rice. In general I love Indian food. Udipi isn't anything fancy or unique. What it is though is delicious vegetarian Indian food. I love grabbing takeout because it's quick and convenient. Takeout is usually ready in 15-20 minutes.

Yelp
I had the Chole with rice. It was amazing. Lots of spices and it was spicy as well. There basically chickpeas in brown gray. I took it to a party and everyone loved it including myself. I high recommended d this place for authentic Indian food.

Yelp
Udipi is well known in the community and for good reason. The food is delicious! They offer south Indian cuisine. I can't help but order a dosa every time. Where it lacks is in atmosphere. The space has a cafeteria vibe. The walls could use a fresh coat of paint and the floors are old. However if you overlook the superficial you will be in for a treat. The proprietors do not seem concerned about the lack of décor probably because the place is always packed! We arrived around 1:30 on a Saturday and the lunch rush was still on. We did manage to find a seat near the door which was perfect for people watching. My dosa was thin, crispy and chewy perfection and the potato filling was perfectly tasty. My dining companion had a dosa with cheese and spinach and she also loved it. The dosa sides were delicious and not too spicy for my taste. They have pickup available if you want to order food and take out. Also, check out the lovely shop next door. They have the most beautiful clothing and jewelry in there!

Yelp
Finally tried Udipi after it was recommended to me so many times as a great vegetarian restaurant. We went for lunch on a Saturday and the place was packed, but we only had to wait ten minutes or so for a table. I haven't had northern Indian food before, so it was hard to decide on just a few items from the large menu of choices. We kind of had to flag someone down to order, but our food was ready super fast after we ordered. We started with the lentil donuts with a coconut dressing. This was a great choice for lunch. I'm a huge fan of any donut or fried dough situation, so these were one of my favorites. The coconut was very refreshing paired with the richness of the donut. We tried an Aloo Gobi entree and dosa with paneer. The dosas look so impressive coming out of the kitchen and are definitely a hot item at Udipi. The paneer version was so savory and cheesy. When we return in looking forward to trying more of the dosas and breads, as you can't find dishes like that many other places in the area.
