"If you like your tamales with some serious heat, head immediately to Umbrella Taco. The tiny shop on Melrose opened in October, and has since become a popular go-to taco and snack spot for hungry shoppers. That said, it’s chef Juan Catalan’s tamales that have our attention. He’s making three different kinds - tamal de puerco (pork shoulder in tomatillo sauce), tamal de pollo (chicken in Teloloapan mole), and a vegetarian offering as well. They’re all good, so just do what we do - get the trio for $9. Order ahead through their website." - Brant Cox

"Umbrella taCO., opened by Umbrella Hospitality Group’s Austin Melrose and Zachary Patterson, is a new taco spot located on Melrose Avenue. The restaurant features a menu crafted by chef Juan Catalan, who blends his Guerrero, Mexican roots with his experiences in Koreatown and Hollywood. The taqueria is known for its housemade tortillas and a variety of tacos, such as carne asada, al pastor, and pescado, as well as options for vegetarians. The tacos are priced between $3.50 and $5.50. The restaurant also offers quesadillas, burritos, and a selection of drinks, including agave-based cocktails and mezcals. It has limited seating with nine counter seats and three window seats, but also offers sidewalk seating, delivery, and takeout. Operating hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m." - Caroline Pardilla

Delicious tacos and excellent service! This time I ordered to go and was more than satisfied with the portions and packaging! I’ve also eaten at the restaurant and everything is even more hot and tasty! Highly recommend for the best tacos, and bowls! They also have an incredible to-go Pina colada I’ve tried that’s decently strong! Great service, great tacos.. what more could you want? :)

Kathy Lew

Google
Best tacos I’ve ever had. Had the veggie and crispy fish. Both were delicious and so many different flavors. The staff is super nice. Cooks were roasting tomatillos and prepping fresh ingredients. Very little sitting - just 3 bar stools inside and about 3 cafe tables outside (2 people each)

Google
Great place for tacos if you’re in the Hollywood area! I tried the al pastor, carne asada and cauliflower tacos and they were all amazing. I even got a second helping of the Al pastor tacos! Service was great. Parking can be challenging in that area, just make sure you read the signs on the side streets.

Google
Amazing horchata, and vegetarian burritos. Chicken Tinga Tacos go crazy. Nice atmosphere and great staff.

Elicia Cano

Google
Very cute little place, service was 20/10 the two staff working were great, and food was even better!! We tried the shrimp, Al pastor and carne asada tacos - shrimp was my favorite! Handmade tortillas and horchata was delish! Would totally recommend!!

Google
This place is very unassuming, but my friends who live close by recommended to me because of their smash burger and the to-go piña colada. The smash burger was amazing — very simple, just patties, cheese, pickles and a sauce, but it was extremely memorable for how unexpected it was as a menu item at a taco shop. The pina colada was great on a hot Sunday afternoon as well. I also tried a carne asada taco which was slightly small, but a solid amount of meat, and what looked like a homemade corn tortilla. Will definitely be returning to this place if I’m in the area! 8.5/10!

Google
The tacos at this place are my absolute favorite in Los Angeles -- they're delicious. The tortillas are made fresh and the flavors are top notch. I recommend the pastor (delicious), and the mole taco -- really something special. (Both pictured below). The chefs are warm and friendly and this is one of my VERY favorite spots in LA.

Tee Ed

Google
I came across this place by accident and went back three times. The smash burgers, fish tacos, steak borito and fries are delicious, completely unexpected to be so satisfying for the price; well worth it.

Yelp
Slightly disappointed in myself for not having found this Taco spot until after living near West Hollywood for over 4 years. As a pescatarian, this place is a must try, and a must-revisit! I ordered 5 tacos and did not feel like I overdid anything (even though I left full!) I had one [Fried] Fish, one Shrimp, one Dorado, and two Jackfruit Mole tacos. Can you tell which was my favorite? The Jackfruit Mole tacos were so delicious. It had the perfect amount of sweetness, and the jackfruit was just a great finishing touch. I loved the flavors of the Shrimp tacos, and while the Fish taco wasn't the best I've had, it was still done really well! And they had a huge piece of fish as well! While the Dorado was still good (the only hardshell taco), it was a little too much potato for me and I know that when I come back, I'll just order 3 Jackfruit Mole tacos. If you're just here for tacos (or burritos...which my partner mentioned was excellent for an Al Pastor burrito), you'll notice there isn't too many spots in the small TaCO restaurant. There are a few seats outside in the front, and stools at the bar inside. But the main restaurant, Umbrella (which shares the same exact kitchen), is a great place if you want more food! Food came out fast, the folks who worked there are super friendly as well! I'd recommend coming a bit early to find street parking and grab a seat!

Emma B.

Yelp
ambiance: great staff: lovely FOOD: ...Only eat here if you're desperate. Your meal will be 98% poorly-cooked rice, and if the menu says "avocado" is involved in the item you order, it means bring your own bc there was none in my burrito lol Yea like this place is there if you need it but it's not good :/

Estele K.

Yelp
Wow food 5/5 say less. Carne asada is so tender but a bit salty, shrimp is so tender, fries so well seasoned. Guacamole is SO GOOD. Service 5/5

Mike A.

Yelp
I've been going to Umbrella Tacos for a few years. They never disappoint. Their food is really good. I've tried every taco option on the menu. My favorites are al pastor and carne asada which is grass fed!

Lisa P.

Yelp
I came into here on Melrose and it's pretty loud and they have a lot of cute decor. They don't have much seating except bar seating. Their tacos be overpriced as located on Melrose would be expected. You can get some street tacos for cheaper and more authentic. They were so stingy with the salsa that I got with my chips. I got chips and only I little teaspoon of salsa in the cup. It almost looked empty and I got all these chips. At least give me the salsa that I paid for. Do not recommend coming here for salsa and chips at least.

Tiffany N.

Yelp
A quick tip: Umbrella Taco is sisters/neighboring with Melrose Umbrella Co. next door and albeit they overlap some things from their menu, don't get it wrong: come directly to this taco spot instead if you want the true and authentic best taco experience! This is a local gem of a spot! My boyfriend discovered umbrella taco a few years back, and this has become our favorite stop for quality tacos ever since! You seriously can't go wrong when coming here and ordering food, from the hospitality to the flavors within the tacos, you will not be disappointed! We wanted to give a special shout out to Juan and the staff for always being so hospitable and treating us so well every time we come in here! We have tried a variety of tacos, from Carne Asada to El Pastor to the cauliflower tacos, but by far the Al Pastor is the agreed-upon favorite! The flavors are an amazing balance of sweet and savory, and when paired with the spicy salsa, it makes her an epic dinner! But honestly, every single taco is so good. It's really hard to pick a top favorite! The carne asada is cooked really well and the cauliflower is fried in this really nicely tangy buffalo sauce and topped with a contrasting slaw which really highlights the palette well. We also really love the quesadillas, which are served in very large and generous portions. Our particular favorite is the chicken, which is stuffed with cheese and meat (yum)! My boyfriend, and I also love to pair our meal with one of the frozen slushies-- our favorite is the piña colada, which is made quite spirit-forward with rum if that's your kind of thing! But the margarita is also extremely refreshing and delicious! Honestly this place will continue to be one of our all time favorites and we're honored to be regulars here!

Claudia D.

Yelp
Cute little spot for a light lunch. The food was amazing. Parking not the easiest. I would go back.

Erik S.

Yelp
All I'm gonna say is I am the pickiest person you'll ever meet when it comes to burritos and Mexican food, this place meets my expectations every time the chicken and meat is quality and not dried out and the flour tortillas are def homemade. Get California style it comes with fries gauc sour cream and more cheese I believe... chips are good, only thing I'd love to see a pico type salsa, the red and green they offer are very unique tasting vs others but still great, if you don't like this place I don't trust you

Kristine K.

Yelp
their food is soooo good, dude. service is also pretty valid; the guys working are very friendly and will provide a recommendation for anything you need. their seating is dope. both outdoor and indoor bar-style seating available.

Miranda J.

Yelp
Very sweet service people, and good came out really fast! My friend and I ordered the chicken tinga as a burrito and burrito bowl. Some of the best chicken I've ever had, I only wish that I had asked for no sour cream or pico. I was SUPER surprised by how affordable the bowl was ($16 total with a hefty side of chips I ordered separately). I don't come to melrose often but I will definitely come back here!

Sid D.

Yelp
Was planning to sit down at Melrose Umbrella, but saw this spot right next door and food smelled delicious. Walked in and bunch of guys making some good amazing food! Small fast-casual place with limited table sitting. Seems like part of Melrose Umbrella. I ordered Al Pastor, Shrimp, and Fried Fish Taco. All three of them were absolutely delicious. Al pastor had a lot of flavors and had right crunch to it. Shrimps were full of flavors and juicy. Fresh fish was perfectly fried and had amazing perfect crunch to it. Definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a quick bite.

Little Miss J.

Yelp
Chef Juan makes the best tacos in LA. My favorite are the chicken mole with extra onions & crema. Just be aware the don't accept apple/ samsung pay which is annoying.

Alias P.

Yelp
The owner, Zach, gave me very special treatment if you know what i mean. Super flavorful. Great vibes

Zach H.

Yelp
Authentic flavors here! Absolutely loved the burrito. Had to order crema on the side though. The steak is fantastic here and packs a punch of flavor. I like how they give you chips and salsa with your order. The burrito was very filling and overall worth it.

Jason T.

Yelp
We ordered burgers at a taco place that already has exceptional tacos and burritos just to find out that the burgers and fries are up to the same standard of quality. The food, atmosphere, service, and quality is always exceptional here and they have made me a regular more so than usual.

Count Y.

Yelp
Service was kinda interesting the man at the front had an interesting vibe... Didn't love the rice kinda a weird texture and seasoning And it's one of those New Mexican places that you have to pay for chips at even though you're spending about $16-18 on your meal Guaq large portion did not feel like a large -my weird vegan homie fucked with the Cauliflower flowers tacos

Tyler K.

Yelp
Coming from San Diego Mexican food and tacos have always been life. After moving to LA for work I came across this place last year. Since then it's been my go to!! Juan the owner and head chef always been hooking it up after about my third visit. Last time it was a free shot a top shelf tequila and this time on 5/7 he gave my girlfriend and I a frozen margarita and a side of their home made Mexican rice. My favorite go to from their menu is the Elote AKA (Aguachile), the El Pastor taco and shimp taco. Come thru and support my guy!! Awesome food and awesome vibes. Also this is my first review ever. I don't ever take the time to leave one but Juan's generosity and the food quality finally got me.

Gabrielle H.

Yelp
Probably the best food I had during my latest LA trip. These tacos were made with love! One of the best steak tacos I've ever had. Rice and beans were also good and I don't normally do black beans. Bartender was super cool and recommended a great tequila. I think he said he was from North Carolina but great dude. Restaurant was chill loved the design and not crowded we came early. Would come back again!

Tyler M.

Yelp
Top tier Corn Tortillas, perhaps the best I've had. They're so soft and more on the thinner side (which I appreciated). The tacos were so flavorful, especially the Jackfruit Mole, wow melt in your mouth good. The Pastor was also cooked so tender and packed with flavor. The Carne was good just a little chewy for me. The mild salsa was good on everything. Also grabbed a Jamaica which was tangy tart and just delicious. Super kind staff as well, you can tell they love what they do.

Dylann G.

Yelp
I only came here cause I saw the "Pina Coladas To Go!" Sign... here I am a Pina colada , Two tacos and a Carne asada fry to go later and I love it! The flavor is worth coming back for, I never knew melrose had such great taste.. will definitely be coming back!

Pauline L.

Yelp
Vegetarian review: Service was excellent and the staff was super nice. My husband and I shared a veggie burrito and the jackfruit mole. Both were kinda meh, the rice was good and the size was good. Unfortunately the jackfruit wasn't tasty and both burritos were heavy on rice and low on all the other ingredients. It wasn't bad, but maybe the meat stuff is better?

Jesse C.

Yelp
Umbrella Taco is a quality spot - ordered the Al Pastor burrito and it was excellent. Good texture to the al pastor and the inclusion of guac was very appreciated. Salsas taste great too. Although the burrito wasn't packed to the max as you might have at other establishments, it was sufficiently filling. Service was great, everyone is extremely friendly and accommodating. Would personally give a 4.5 stars for the price, but it is Melrose so it's sort of expected. Also, no cash and no tap to pay (at least when I went). Personally, would give it closer to a

Bailey C.

Yelp
Where to begin.... Everything about it is a yes!! The staff is amazing, the food is phenomenal and the ambiance is so cute. It's a small taco joint off melrose and always a good choice. I love coming here after shopping. Quick and convenient. My faves are the chicken tinga taco, potato taco and the asada. I have yet to try anything else because I always get a craving for these. :p I love how friendly and welcoming they always are!

Laura A.

Yelp
Most food was excellent, not a fan of the overly lemony guac. Small place with no a/c, we sat outside in the shade which was much cooler than inside.

Ben C.

Yelp
Food is out of this world, the salsa (green) is one of the best in LA! I recommend the pastor tacos and the asada torta! Can't forget the amazing service and amazing chefs cooking up the best tacos in LA ! The frozen marg and pina colada's are also a staple so make sure to try them!

Ted C.

Yelp
I was taking an afternoon walk down Melrose when I saw a chalkboard for margaritas and tacos and figured it was worth a stop in. I wasn't in the mood to drink but having some tacos sounded good. I went the traditional route and got the asada and al pastor. While the asada wasn't the best I've had that al pastor was a sleeper hit. I liked it so much I ended up going back for another taco and I eventually capitulated and got their margarita after all, the fresh one, not frozen. They made it pretty quick and again it was decent but the staff were so friendly that they made me stick around a lot longer than I had thought I would. If you happen to be taking a quiet afternoon stroll and are nearby stop in for a while.

Sam S.

Yelp
Hella yea! Really tasty tacos on Melrose. Flavorful al pastor was my favorite- had just the right amount of fresh guac too and the side of spicy salsa was just right (it's not even too hot). Small place, serves margs too, great for quick tasty bite on melrose

Theresa B.

Yelp
This unassuming little Mexican place is an absolute gem with the best goddamn pina colada machine on the planet. Even when I lived in Northridge I'd uber my way down here by myself just to enjoy the perfectly strong & delicious drinks and the guac, tacos, quesadillas etc., which also rule. You can order verbally but you can also just scan the QR code and order through the app with minimal human interaction, if it's that type of day. I'll admit I haven't been here in a few months - not recently enough to remember my exact past orders, anyway - but I'll be certain to visit again and update soon.

Olivia J.

Yelp
Stopped in before improv for a quick bite. Let me just tell you, I was thinking about my food after I left, during the comedy show, and right after and I'm not a foodie @all The staff take the time to acknowledge you right away which is nice. They have bar seating where you get to see the open kitchen. Got the chicken mole tacos.... Amazing!!!! perfect mole and the best hand pressed tortillas I've ever had! Will definitely be back soon!

Zeeshan K.

Yelp
While waiting to check into our Airbnb we came across umbrella tacos. Hands down some of the best tacos we've had. If you're in the area...these tacos are a must.

Emily T.

Yelp
Delicious tacos, quesadilla and esquites! I will absolutely be back. The hot salsa is HOT - be warned!

Nihar B.

Yelp
Tacos were awesome! Tasty! And the people there are cool. Right next to one of my Go to drink spots Umbrella Co. fire

Elle V.

Yelp
Today was my first day here and I can't wait to go back! The food was made by happy people that's all I can think! It was Quality food made with Love! The people here were very nice and I took a bit long to order. I thought I may have gotten on their nerves but the guy was so kind and understanding and made my experience there a good one! I don't speak Spanish but knew it was some quality Mexican music playing! I had a Pina Colada and it was really good! It was an all around great experience! I will be back for more Esquites and tacos! Do yourself a favor and try this place, I doubt you'd be disappointed! My daughter Loved it too! Her burrito was so good!

Thu D.

Yelp
The corn tortillas are so good. It adds so much flavor to a well rounded taco. I had the Carne Asada and Al Pastor. I would go back and try other meats. For sure worth a try. I was surprised how good it was. Sometimes you just want a fancy taco. I only wish their sauce was spicier. Maybe they have some. I just didn't ask.

Thomas O.

Yelp
The only reason this place gets a 3 star is because of how expensive it' is. They were probably the best tacos I've had from a non taco truck, but 12$ for 2 tacos is a little crazy. I understand it's on melrose so rent is expensive and the tortillas are hand made but 12$ for 2 is crazy.

Emma K.

Yelp
YUMMY MEXICAN FOOD :) it's a small restaurant perfect for lunch or take out. The carne asada bowl was really tasty - a little oily but very filling and flavorful. The spicy sauce on the side is a must! My friends and I were very hungry so we ordered a ton but the bowl would've been enough for me! Service was fast.

Eric R.

Yelp
Really wanted to try this place out... Got here at 12:02 and found this. Management, your Yelp hours are wrong. Yelp is the main resource for people trying to find businesses. Highly recommend you update your hours.

Bree W.

Yelp
Great good. Very delicious. Kind staff and dope vibe. Will definitely eat here again.

Eddie S.

Yelp
Tons of vegan options and every single one was so good that it's hard to choose just one!

Lawrence S.

Yelp
Highly recommend checking this place out. I tried their carne asada burrito with guacamole. They don't overcook their steak so it's still tender and flavorful. The guac is very fresh and won't overpower the meat. Came with tortilla chips that had seasoning too. I paid $16.97 before tip for the burrito plus guac (guac is $1.50). Definitely stop by and try for yourself! As a burrito connoisseur, I had to leave a 5 star review. Yum!

Kayla G.

Yelp
this is one of those unassuming little hole-in-the-wall places that has incredible food. I tried the al pastor, fried fish, and shrimp tacos - every single one was amazing! I don't even think I can pick a favorite, they were all so delicious. as you can see the al pastor taco looked so good I couldn't even wait to take a picture before digging in. the server was very friendly too! I definitely think I've found my new favorite spot for tacos in LA.

Katherine L.

Yelp
This place hit the spot! Super crispy, lightly battered, and fresh fish taco (just one). Sometimes getting fried fish, it can be a bit heavy, but this was just right proportion (and you can get grilled too). Would highly recommend getting them and chips and guacamole as a side (salsa is free). You can easily get it for here or to go and super convenient to get if you're in the melrose area. Also have cocktails on the menu and a taco Tuesday special.

Yvonne Q.

Yelp
Came back to Melrose, our old neighborhood to walk around and ended up trying Umbrella Taco for lunch. All I can say is WOW - exceptional service, flavorful food and super authentic. My favorite items were the carne asada taco (truly one of the best I've ever had) and the dorados (potatoes) taco. My husband had the Al pastor burrito and loved it too. The green salsa was delicious and the standard red is very mild, good for our toddler to eat with her chips. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu! Staff - thank you thank you for going above and beyond for us. We appreciate you!

Nicole P.

Yelp
Small Resturant with small, indoor, bar like seating and a few tables outside, but who cares about that when the food is so good!! The pork, carne, chicken all excellent. We can NOT drive past this place without stopping. I'm full after about 2 tacos but refuse to stop eating simply based on mouth pleasure. Great salsas! The potato taco is also delicious!

Chris O.

Yelp
Walked in around 8pm and was ignored by the two gentlemen working who kept giving me the "one moment" hand sign. Waited for over ten minutes at the desk until I decided to leave. Weird experience and won't be back.

Robert P.

Yelp
The staff was friendly and helpful and the tacos were really good. My group shared orders of chicken tinga tacos and tacos al pastor. Everyone was pleased with the food. The only downside was the outside dining area was dirty and run down. They need to wash down the patio floor, tables and chairs to get the LA street grime off of them. Also replace the dead plants.

Viv W.

Yelp
Tasty tacos, bowls, and agua frescas at your typical LA prices. Small spot next with only a few outdoor seats, so best for one-on-one dates or to-go. We got carne asada tacos, shrimp bowl, and one of the agua frescas. All were delicious. Really good salsas as well. The friendly cashier was just cherry on top! Pretty decent free parking in residential neighborhood behind Melrose Ave.

Matthew M.

Yelp
I was in the area craving Mexican food and stumbled upon this place right before they closed. Staff was friendly and mole fries and tamales were amazing. Extra points for Chef Juan; i walked in wearing one of my favourite shirts and he helped me identify the guy on my shirt, Subcomandante Marcos. I appreciated getting to hear the history behind him and overall the hospitality from the staff. Definitely coming back.

Lana E.

Yelp
Mediocre and overpriced, but drinks are strong. Guac lacked onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and seasoning. Fried fish taco was meh and skimped with one tortilla, super messy. Weird little detail was an employee telling me to use the bathroom of the restaurant next door?? I gave up waiting in line after 5+ minutes. As I went to stand outside, an employee said "You can use the bathroom next door. Go to the restaurant next door." What? It was another staff member who was in the bathroom.
