Longtime, casual spot serving soul food including signature sauce-laden fried chicken.
"This business has blessed the homes of Chicagoans with great smells and delicious food since 1963. Historically in competition with Harold’s, Uncle Remus has its own unique style. The chicken is double-coated with their seasoned batter, deep-fried to crunchy perfection, and then dressed with their sweet and tangy mild sauce." - adrian kane, phaithe norman, john ringor
"This Austin spot has blessed the homes of Chicagoans with great smells and delicious food since 1963. The chicken is double-coated with their seasoned batter and deep-fried to crunchy perfection. But what truly sets it apart is the third word in its name: “saucy.” Often credited with introducing mild sauce to the chicken game, no piece from here is complete without the glistening sweet and tangy sauce." - john ringor, adrian kane
"As the name implies, this West Side favorite specializes in crunchy fried chicken covered in mild sauce. The heavily peppered crust is offset by a sweet sauce that’s judiciously poured over the chicken. Be prepared to wait for the saucy goodness, or order ahead of time. There are three other outposts in Bronzeville, Broadview, and Bolingbrook." - Eater Staff
"Uncle Remus Saucy Fried Chicken, one of the top spots for crunchy fried poultry in Chicago, this week reopened its freshly remodeled flagship location after a 13-month closure on the West Side, Block Club Chicago reports. CEO Charmaine Rickette told reporters that there were lots of reasons for the temporary shutdown — including staffing shortages, high food costs, and supply chain delays — but ultimately it provided time to improve equipment and revamp the space with a $162,000 grant from the city’s Neighborhood Opportunity Fund program. Rickette’s father, Gus Rickette, founded the original restaurant in 1969 on Cicero Avenue and is considered among the originators of mild sauce, a sweet and tangy condiment now popular throughout the city. Uncle Remus Saucy Fried Chicken, 5611 W. Madison Street, Open 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday." - Naomi Waxman
