Chef Chris Shepherd’s Burger Joint Is Open at the Houston Farmers Market - Eater Houston

"Chef Chris Shepherd makes a damn fine burger, and now he has his very own burger joint at Houston Farmers Market. Underbelly Burger opens today at 2520 Airline Drive, with Shepherd’s double meat, double cheese burger as the main event. That burger with lettuce, pickles and tomato on a potato bun is a twist on Shepherd’s Cease and Desist burger at his Hay Merchant restaurant (which resulted in a stern letter from lawyers for California chain In-N-Out). The beef at Underbelly Burger is sourced from longtime Underbelly Hospitality beef supplier 44 Farms and R-C Ranch’s butcher shop next door at the farmers market. The menu also includes milkshakes, a veggie burger, a bacon sausage served like a hot dog, and a black pepper buttermilk chicken sandwich modeled on a Hay Merchant version. There’s also “sidewinder” fries, dusted in ranch powder. The look of Underbelly Burger mimics a diner, with green and white tile lining the walls and counters of the 14-seat restaurant. Decor includes Shepherd’s own vintage burger memorabilia collection. There’s a pick-up window as well for those who’d like to eat outside at the farmers market’s al fresco dining area. Underbelly Burger is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with pickup or delivery at its website." - Adele Chapin

Google
Wagyu burger was ok- way too much condiments. Very messy, very sloppy. Good Taste. The fries were delicious. Restroom is across the walkway . Fountain machine was not working when we were there. I had to get sweet tea – – it was hot and definitely not sweet enough.

Google
My husband bought me by for lunch. Im so thankful he did. 1 of the best burgers I had ! And I have had a lot. The fries are good. I also had the shake. The serve size is huge. We did not finish it all. Helpful suggestion 2 people can share the fries. The burger melts in your mouth. New favorite burger spot!

Google
Underbelly Burger is a little difficult to find, until you learn the lay of the land at the Houston Farmer’s Market, which opens up other shopping opportunities that speak for themselves. The burger I had was really good, but it was the fries that made me a loyal and frequent customer. Dusted with a light sprinkling of Ranch dressing powder, they are the highlight, for me, of the meal. They take nothing away from the burger, but if the burger itself wasn’t as good as it is they definitely would be little golden brown show stealers. The staff was friendly and polite. The food came quickly and was freshly made and hot. I highly recommend anyone who appreciates a good burger and even better fries “find” Underbelly Burger and give it a try.

Google
Service was excellent. Friendly, patient, courteous. The menu isn't very large but the meat is top grade Angus or Wagyu. All the burgers come double meat. One review said that the burgers were really big so I asked for single patty but they're actually normal size burgers with a special in house sauce. Fries were unusual shape but very good and generously portioned. Dine inside with AC, comfy seating or tables outside under covered walkway. Burger and fries were great but kind of pricey. Expect to pay about $18-20 for 1 combo.

Google
This place was really good. We ordered the Angus Burger combo, and if I am back in the area, I'd definitely return. The fries are delicious, but I would have liked them a little extra crispy. The burgers are huge, I really think my husband and I could have shared a burger, but we also had just finished walking around in the Houston heat at the Farmers Market, so maybe we were just too hot. The atmosphere is perfect. It is just a small burger joint, and it is kept nice and tidy, and the music is FANTASTIC.

Google
This is a great addition to Houston's Farmers Market. The menu is only a few items and the place is tiny but the burgers are great. I had the Angus burger and I enjoyed it a lot. It's obviously more expensive than a fast food burger place but it's well worth it. You definitely get what you pay for because they deliver a ton more value. Combine with a walk around the farmers market for a pretty good time out. The menu and dining room are very basic but overall great experience.

Google
Great burger, thr chicken sandwich was ok, food fries. TBH I was mad the the burgers were so small for that price. The flavor/taste kind of made me forget about that. That was the first time I went. The second ti.me something was different the burgers were not as good. I do plan to give the another try to have a tie breaker. So we will see what comes of it.

Google
If you are craving a BURGER, this is your spot! The burgers here are made with the freshest ingredients and it just melts in your mouth! Kind of pricey but it’s worth every penny! Not too much of a fan of the fries. Battered fries aren’t my thing so that just me.

Yelp
Tried the chicken sandwich today and it was just okay. Had the 44 farms angus burger and it was amazing as always. I prefer this one to the Wagyu burger. The fries, if you can call them that, are terrible. I wish they would change these. The milkshakes are very good. The burger alone is enough to keep me coming back.

Yelp
Located inside of the Houston Farmer's Market, Underbelly Burger came into the scene just 3 years ago and is a part of the Underbelly Hospitality family. Their mission was simple, which was to specialize in locally sourced meats to create the the best burger in Houston. While I think it's a good burger, it's far from being the best. The vibe is casual and comfortable. The crowd has always been very light during each of my visits, but there is enough seating for a quality solo meal or small group. Since they close at 6pm daily, I imagine the lunch crowd is proably their busiest time here. Service is quite good overall, but one's mileage will vary as always. One thing I like immediately is the fact both their burgers are double patty and very simple with lettuce, tomato, American cheese, and their house sauce. The 44 Farms Angus burger is my preferred of the two, but the R-C Ranch Wagyu is certainly no slouch. The quality of the meat is definitely good, but doesn't pack the hype that I had hoped. They also have a vegetarian version (housemade veggie burger), which is on par with their bacon sausage hot dog for being somewhat unmemorable. The chicken sandwich is a notch above both, especially when combined with those ranch powdered fries. I have also indulged in their milkshakes a time or two, and I think the cookies and cream is my preferred shake of the bunch. When I first came a couple of years ago, I thought the prices were a tad high for the portion, but now I think the prices are normalized. Foodflation can be such a jerk sometimes. I do think that Underbelly Burger still serves as a necessary option at the Farmers Market. I am thrilled for their second location in Spring Branch and hope that it can deliver on some of the things that this original spot missed.

Yelp
Despite the initial look of this burger, it was delicious! I had the wagyu burger combo, which will set you back a total of $20 with tax. It's not a ton of food, but it's plenty. The burger itself is wonderful, no suggestions on how to make it better. The ranch fries while perfectly cooked, could have used a bit more of that ranch flavor. It looks like they had tea available, but no sweetener. Also the only sauce I saw was ketchup despite a review that talked about other sauces. ‍ The interior of the restaurant has a fast food, almost five guys vibe. However it looks like it just wasn't finished being decorated. Not sure if that was the aesthetic that they are going for or if my friend put it, "It looks like their tile guy just kind of quit." A little pricey for casual dining, but I did get a whole combo with a burger, fries and a drink. Put a little more flavor on the fries, let me know there's other sauces to try, and some sweetener for the tea and this place could be a five.

Yelp
Tried out underbelly at the Houston farmers market and it was pretty tasty. It's located towards the back and they have some space in side for seating. They had some oldies playing and it had that old timer diner feel which was cool. I had the 44 farms angus burger which has two patties and it was tasty but I didn't really like the sesame bun but was good none the less. I also ordered some fries which are really potato wedges and I didn't really like that but they had good seasoning. If you love burgers like I do check this place out. You may end up added it on your top five list!!

Yelp
Good burgers. Messy but in a good way. The bread does quickly get soggy though. The burgers are double patty which was not indicated on the menu, but not an issue. The fries are like wedges and very good. They were hot and crispy. The shakes are blended well. The kale salad is sweet and good, but make sure you are ok with very sweet. The size is a small to go container. I was a little taken aback by the size. Overall, a good food experience. Make sure you're ready to spend $12 or $13 on just the burger though and $6 for fries. The guy helping us could have been nicer. I didn't know my friend bought me a milkshake so when the employee (who was also our cashier) asked me if I wanted whipped cream I was confused because I had only ordered a burger and fries so I didn't know what the whipped cream was in reference to. The confusion was cleared up in 15 seconds but within that time he rolled his eyes at me. When we purchased our food he wasn't nice when my friend asked if protein could be added to the salad, which is not indicated on the menu anywhere so it was a legit question. Maybe he was having a bad day, but I noticed.

Yelp
A cute counter service burger spot. I was excited to try. Menu was pretty small which usually means they do a few things really well. I got the angus burger, and I wasn't in love. The burger was cold, maybe the patties were previously frozen? The sandwich itself was pretty soggy and unfortunately I didn't taste any seasoning. It reminded me of a sonic burger. I liked the fries, but those could have used some seasonings as well. The kale salad was extremely small for $10.

Yelp
I've been meaning to get by here for a while now after hearing about this restaurants' opening. It's located at the Houston Farmers Market on Airline with a lot of parking available (unless it's a weekend when it get very busy). Underbelly Burger is located behind the produce market on the north side. Inside it is small with seating for about 14 people and is a counter service restaurant with a self serve fountain drink machine along with ice tea. A couple of ice tubs offers a few beers and hard ciders too. I ordered the Angus Burger for $12 and added the combo (fries and drink) for another $5. With tax the meal was a little over $18 and they offer a Wagyu burger for $2 more. My meal was ready in about 10 minutes and with no seating available inside I was forced to go outside on a very windy day. There, the Farmers Market has several uncovered tables and chairs. The burger is a double meat patty job that was dressed with lettuce, tomato and pickle but no onion offered. Also it comes with cheese which I had them hold. Those ingredients are then put on a small sized sesame seed bun. The burger was good tasting and while small it was also thick with the two beef patties. The fries were of an unusual design as they resembled curly potato logs in their thickness and were seasoned. I liked them too. By the way, ketchup is offered at the counter in small containers and be sure to ask for two as they are small. This was a decent meal that I feel deserves a 3 score. If you come here take into consideration the weather (if you are not getting it to go) as you will probably have to sit outside to eat it. This restaurant really should have more inside seating. The other consideration is cost. Without beer or a milkshake a meal will cost over $18 and it didn't stand out to me as being worth that price point. IF you are coming to the Farmers Market to shop AND you are hungry for a burger consider eating here. If not, I wouldn't make a special trip to just come eat at Underbelly Burger.

Yelp
The burgers at Underbelly Burger did not disappoint. First have to start off by saying service was 10/10. I wish I got her name, but the cashier was so kind and asked us mid meal if everything was okay. Burgers were a little pricey, but worth it. My husband got the wagyu cheeseburger and I got the angus cheeseburger. Cheese was perfectly melted, burger was cooked to medium perfection, meaty and flavorful. Took the cashiers advice and ordered one fries to share and it was the perfect amount, loved the ranch seasoning. Would definitely come back here!

Yelp
Visited the farmers market and stopped in for lunch. I got veggie burger, my partner for the angus and we shared the fries. GET THE FRIES! They are perfectly seasoned and if I didn't live so far out, I'd go back just for them. The staff was very friendly and patient with us as we decided on our order. The restaurant is kind of small but there's also outside seating available.
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
We love both the burger and the chicken sandwich. We needed up trading several times! Fries are unique (in a good way!) and we were glad we split an order as the were huge and filling. it was nice to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather and eat our meals.

Yelp
Underbelly Burger is a new burger joint from James Beard Award-winning chef, Chris Shepherd, and his team at Underbelly Hospitality. It is located in the Houston Farmers Market in the Heights. There is a big parking lot located behind the market, but it can get quite busy. The restaurant has a retro vibe and can only seat 14-customers. There are outdoor tables available throughout the market as well when the weather permits. We ordered: +R-C Ranch Wagyu Burger for $14 - This burger comes with two all beef patties, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. I was honestly disappointed when I saw this burger. It came with a typical sesame seed bun, and the ingredients looked and tasted very cheap. Yet, Underbelly Burger was able to charge a premium because of the brand name and hype. The meat itself had good flavor, but it was overcooked and was overpowered by the mediocre ingredients. For the price of a gourmet burger, this burger was "meh." You could find a tastier burger at a fast food restaurant and spend half the money. - 3/5 +Make It A Combo for $5 (includes Ranch Seasoned Sidewinder fries and a soft drink) - The fries had a nice, crispy exterior with a soft, potato center. They were good. - 4/5 Overall, Underbelly Burger was okay, and I would give them a 3.5/5 rating. It's located in a Farmers Market, so I would have expected tastier ingredients for the burger (especially for the high price tag). Unfortunately, I would not recommend checking it out unless they made significant changes.

Yelp
Underbelly Burger is located within the Houston Farmers Market in the Heights area. I'll be honest, I didn't even know there was a farmers market here, so it was pretty exciting to see something like this in Houston. The restaurant is smaller with very minimal seating, but there were plenty of outdoor seating. My first impression of the menu was that it was pricy for a diner-casual fast food-type vibe. We ordered the wagyu burger combo that comes with ranch seasoned fries and a fountain drink. Wagyu burger - 3/5 - do yourself a favor and opt for the angus burger, I couldn't even tell this was Wagyu. Meat felt over cooked and toppings were subpar quality ingredients. For a $14 burger, I didn't expect cheap shredded iceberg lettuce and a sesame burger bun. Fries - 4/5 - perfectly crispy and potatoey. Seasoning flavor was not strong enough but it was also pretty salty. This was better than the burger. Overall, I would probably not come back. I know Underbelly to be a great chain but the price is not worth the quality you get here. My actual rating would be a 3.5 star but rounding up for Underbelly name.

Yelp
I'd really have to second almost everything in Mike M.'s review below. To add a few things: The hours are a bit challenging. 11a-6p comes across as being open for half of dinner. I really wanted to give this a try sooner, but there was no way I could get over here on a weeknight -- location is not the most central within the Loop. The decor was really boring. Having heard great things about Wild Oats decor, and recalling Hay Merchant, there's virtually nothing on the walls. They seem to be starting a collection of burger memorabilia below the counter and I really like they grow this! The burger's taste was really meaty. That was pretty cool, since premium meat is the highlight of this burger spot! I do wish they offered onions on the base burger, or had more of a customize-your-burger approach. A single patty option might also be nice for those who just want a snack after walking the market. I really want this place to succeed -- but at present, it feels a little direction-less which is shocking to say about an Underbelly restaurant. Given the choice, I'd probably pick lunch at a spot like Mia's Table or even The Burger Joint over Underbelly Burger in the current format. There's a lot of potential with this location (maybe live music at the little park here? A dog menu to pair with a play area in the little park?). Look forward to seeing how they evolve.

Yelp
This place should be five stars. Waygu burger is a the move, not sure how you could order anything else. The staff suggested fries and 3 different sauces on the side. The homemade ranch is a most the outdoor seating is a nice touch too. Also, the fries have ranch flakes on them, very flavorful. The setting has a lot of retro burgers stuff, like a burger telephone. I'll be back!

Yelp
At first I had a little trouble finding the place. It's nestled away deep in the farmers market - and you won't see it from the street. I ordered a wagyu combo. The burger had an excellent balance of ooziness, cheese, and flavor. As far as the burger is concerned, this one is solid. It is a little pricey for what you get, but so are most burgers at gourmet burger restaurants. The fries? I could eat them or I could pass next time. They did have flavor, but after tasting the burger, I didn't need them. On the topic of speed, the cooking process isn't quick, but the food is fresh which I'll take any day. Honestly, would give this place 4.5 stars.

Adam R.

Yelp
Great little place. Kids loved the burgers and the fries are to die for. Stop in if you're at the farmers market.

Daniel N.

Yelp
Delicious burger, amazing kale salad. Go for waygu! Liz was so friendly and helpful, we'll be back!

Yelp
Food was very good. We tried the wagu and angus beef burgers. But they didn't tell us which was which (we split them). One was better than the other; I assume the wagu. The fries were great. A bit pricey but we knew that before arriving. $39 for 2burgers, 2 fries and 3 sodas. Fed three adults. Limited hours, so plan accordingly. Worth the effort.

Yelp
This was a really good burger . I got the angus patty and didn't expect it to be double I eat so little so I was surprised . I also asked for grilled jalapeños to be added and it did not disappoint . They add this special house sauce to it and the onions and sauce along with the cheese just melted so well together . I didn't like the location , it took me a minute to find it but I won't forget where it is now since it was so delicious ! I got the combo with fries and a drink which cost me about 16.00 . Not too bad for a good burger . I actually liked the ambiance , I got there pretty early and there was no wait they cook it right there where you can see if you want to . Now let's really get into this burger . It was juicy , melty and messy ! Just like I like it . I took one bite and it was dripping with the special sauce . The jalapeños I added were a really good highlight . I bit into the burger and it was the perfect bite . The way it was so well put together really made me want to come back for more . The fries were delicious , definetly weird but they were delicious and seasoned extremely well. I enjoyed this place so much and I'm a burger lover will def be back !

Yelp
Underbelly was small, clean, and unique. I love that the menu was small and easy to choose from. I loved the fries. They were hot and fresh. The veggie burger was delicious and different from other vegetarian burgers I've had. It is heavy on the corn side so if you're not into that be aware. The cookies and cream shake was fire too. Worth the visit!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Burgers were good. Tasty, diner style, made fresh! Unusual shaped fries, very filling! They do have beers and seltzer as well. Limited menu, but if you are going out for burgers what do you really need? You can also take your drink to go and walk around the market.

Yelp
Best way to describe "Underbelly" Burger is a simple "Underwhelming". First visit, and probably last, was earlier today while we were visiting the "new" Houston Farmers Market for the first time since the "remodeling". Being a native Houstonian and having grown up with the "Airline Farmers Market" it was sad walking up and down the isles without the crude vegetable stands with the families selling their goods. Seems a few of the old vendors are still there, but the big sheds in the back selling bulk vegetable are gone. Now there are new "eating" places along the paths. In comes my visit to Underwhelming Underbelly. Feels like going into a Burger King or Whataburger with much fewer seating options; they can only seat about 14 or 15 people inside with the rest moving outside to find a table or chairs in the common area where the kids are playing. Very stark, institutional feel in the restaurant; the warmth of a school cafeteria. So much for the structure and atmosphere and on to the food. With Chris Shepherd being a James Beard Award winning chef, and visits to his other restaurants, my expectations were high; but unmet. Wanting to sample as much as possible from the menu, I ordered the Chicken Sandwich ($12) and my wife order the 44 Farms Angus Burger ($12, a combo with fries and a soft drink comes for another 5 bucks), along with the Twisty Fries. Sad to say the Chicken Sandwich was a BIG disappointment with it's thin chicken patty that appear to be a thigh as a large portion of it was dark, covered with thin batter which lacked a crispiness typically associated with fried chicken sandwiches. The bun was a flat squashed plain bun that appeared to have been stored under sack of potatoes (noticeable in the photo attached) prior to seeing my sandwich. Most redeeming quality of the Chicken Sandwich was the "sauce' and pickles. Quite a disappointment when compared to the new wave of chicken sandwiches coming from everyone from Popeye's to Nashville style hot chicken. BTW - you can get THREE Popeye's chicken sandwiches for the same price as ONE Underbelly chicken sandwich, and just one of of Popeye's has a larger piece of chicken, about twice the size of UBB's. I missed getting a photo of the Angus Burger, but I'll try to give you a good verbal description instead. The burger was spitting image of a McDonald's Double Cheese Burger with patties a bit larger, but the same diameter. The patties had a good flavor but overly salty, and overcooked (dry) for my liking. Served with usual lettuce, tomatoes, pickle and house sauce. While the menu stated "All Beef PATTY" not PATTIES, it had two thin patties rather that a single juicy thick patty. The assembly of the burger was mess, thrown together and with a mashed bun similar to the chicken sandwich; but it was covered with sesame seeds which was a big plus. In summary your better off going to Popeye's for your chicken sandwiches and MUCH better off going to Beck's Prime for you burgers. Beck's is light years ahead of UBB's burger and still 25 cents less!!

Yelp
Went today after seeing they were open on Instagram. I was definitely excited to try this place but I will say I was a little disappointed. The food was fine, tasty burger and fries, but it was very expensive for what you get. I got a burger, fries and a drink and my total came out to $23.42. It was honestly just a normal tasting burger so the price didn't really match my expectations. I also saw them pouring the fries into the frier from a frozen bag, I would've expected them to be making their fries from fresh potatoes in-house, given the price range. On another note, this place is located at the Houston Farmers Market, a place I frequent very often to buy my produce, Mexican candy, and mole. Wether this is the fault of Underbelly or the market management, I couldn't help but feel some fear that having a place like Underbelly here could bring gentrification to the farmers market. I just hope the existing vendors and customer base are not negatively impacted by having such an expensive and trendy place added to the market, and that Underbelly is being responsible and mindful of their potential impact. I don't think I will be coming back here, but I can definitely see why people would enjoy eating here. Again, the food was fine but it's just not a place that's for me.

Yelp
There is not much to say about a burger except that it was good or bad. This burger the probably among the worst burgers I had, and my son could not eat his chicken burger either. Their potatoes are not cooked. It is awful. The only edible thing was the diet drink. The employees cannot deliver. I saw a group of people come in and leave after standing in front of the counter for 5 minutes and no one asked them the time of the day. Horrible business venture. Will never go back.

Yelp
Quick and accurate. Fries air so airy and fluffy, perfect crispy and mushy potato inside with some tasty ranch seasoning. Wagyu burger was very juicy and tender. The white American cheese make the burger so cheesy...yum. Not a whole lot of seating but it's small inside so maybe better. Also grabbed a vanilla shake at the end and not sure why but it was SALTY. They were out of Oreos, what?, so I only got the cream no cookies as the waitress said. Overall the service was good but a bit pricy and the food didn't quite meet up to what I was expecting for a award winning chef.

Yelp
Try the fuego burger it's delicious the flavors come together so well. The cheese, peppers, onions and avocado, it is so delicious!. The service here is amazing! They are in tune with their customers told them about an allergy and they hooked my friend with a gluten free burger. Impressed they did a lettuce wrap and it was not short the flavors! Mine was on a bun and both were so GOOD! The location is super clean, nice family environment, the staff is very friendly and the food is great! Go try the fuego burger soon! And while you're there try the shakes too! It's like the old fashioned shakes very good!

Yelp
I've had this on my list for some time, but it's a bit out of the way for me. I went to Peaky Grinders last week so really wanted to get here so I could compare and contrast. It's hard to decide which I like better because they are both great. I think I may have to try each again to come to a satisfactory conclusion. ;0 Underbelly Burgers is super. Friendly staff and quick service. I got the 44 Farms Burger Combo. The burger was super fresh and had great flavor. The fries are a different shape and seasoned with some Ranch powder...good stuff! I got the Veggie Burger for my roommate and he actually raved about it. He never raves about anything, so this is a very positive sign. I suspect this place is super busy on the weekend. I'll be going back next week to try the RC Wagyu Burger.

Yelp
This was fun to visit, but I gotta say, this sort of underwhelmed me after eating the cease and decist for years at Haymerchant. Glad I tried it, but not going in my burger rotation. Love a lot of his other concepts, just not sold on this one yet. My waygu burger was tasty, and I thought a reasonable buy for the cost, but cooked well past what I expected. Not dry quite yet, but dense and crumbly, nearing the point of no return. I will say the fries were rockin, and staff all very kind. Seating is meh, and timing is everything here. Still not sure what to think about the farmers market overhaul either maybe it'll grow on me, but this spot would probably be a 4 for me located anywhere else, the stink of festering gentrification down airline is too much.

Yelp
Underbelly Burger definitely lived up to the hype. I was a huge fan of the Cease and Desist Burger at Hay Merchant and this was a good substitute. Everything was perfect, from the quality meat, cooking, and house sauce. The fries were also really good - the ranch powder is awesome. However, it is pricy for what feels like a fast food restaurant. These prices would be more appropriate at a restaurant like Hay Merchant or other casual sit down restaurant. They only have a handful of tables, so if they're busy, you may be stuck eating at a picnic table outside. But I guess this is the Chris Shepherd "premium" these days.

Yelp
Best burger in Houston! Definitely recommend! Cooked perfectly! Thanks - will be back!

Yelp
Great burger! Underbelly Burger's standard burger has two patties and is very tasty! (Though note the burger is a little pricy at $14, not including any sides). The french fries are curly potato wedges, with a dusting of ranch spice--they were different, and I liked them. It's too bad that their milkshake machine was out when we visited--I'd love to try their milkshakes at some point. It's located near the back of the Houston Farmers Market, so it's a nice area to explore. And you can eat inside the restaurant, or they have outdoor tables and green space outside.

Yelp
The food is delicious and locally sourced. The staff is very friendly. There was an issue with my burger and they remedied it right away.

Yelp
Burger was OK, but for $12 I expect much better. Worst of all, they do not serve iced tea. The have "sweet tea" only. What respectable Texan drinks pre-sweetened tea? This is the only restaurant in Houston where I have not found brewed tea. We will not be back.

Yelp
Delicious !!! Angus burger and fries were so good. I'm definitely going back. Fries were tasty and crispy . Burger was perfectly cooked and seasoned , bun soft and yummy. Casual atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Not sure I understand the hype. The wagyu burger was very overcooked and a bit tough. I would go with regular angus.

Yelp
Located in the Houston Farmer's Market - I was excited to see new restaurants added to the Market. Underbelly Burger has a simple menu with a retro look and feel. Basically burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes and drinks. They have a Wagu and an Angus burger. Both come with their house sauce, processed American cheese-food, lettuce pickles and tomato. They have a small indoor seating area and there is plenty of outdoor covered seating. I got the Angus burger and their seasoned fries. While not bad - the burger was fairly average. Two thin beef patties griddled to well done. They had a nice sear on the patties and a decent salty taste. However, the texture was a bit chewy given what I assume to be good quality beef. The bun and toppings were of good quality and (again) very traditional. The spiral cut fries were decent with a nice seasoning that did not overpower. I felt the fries were a bit unevenly cooked. Some portions were pleasing crisp - but others had centers that seemed only partially cooked. To be honest, given Chris Shepherd other great restaurants and Alison Cook's rave review I was a bit disappointed.

Yelp
We had the chicken sandwiches and the fries with chocolate shakes, it was $50, way too expensive to return. The sandwiches were okay and the shakes were good, my husband liked the fries, but I will also say that the place was not very clean, ketchup all over counter and the floor and empty tables were dirty.

Yelp
Fair to Midland at best They took an expensive 44 meat and burnt the meat right out of it. Definitely not worth the price

Yelp
The fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy. I only wish I would have bought more but at $5, I withheld my desire. A mayo dipping sauce would have been perfect for the fries too. For it to be a restaurant brought ht to you by an award winning chef, it's underwhelming to put it mildly. I tried the wagu burger as well. It was just mid, nothing special about it, nothing to make it stand out.it's disappointing since it cost $10+ just for the burger that can't even compete with your local Whataburger. The staff was pleasant and I like the music. I feel like my review matches the energy of the food of this place. ‍

Yelp
At first glance the burger appeared on the smaller size but I was wrong. I was stuffed to the point that I had to force the last bite. I did however leave a few fries behind which my dog was pleased with. I will say that I think The meat patty could have done with a bit less salt. But that's just me. Over all this is one messy flavorful burger and the fact that it's in my neighborhood is awesome too.

Yelp
The menu is short and simple to make your choice. I love the burger at "hey marchant" across waugh st and westheimer rd . I came with the curiosity of the purpose of the chef Chris. I ordered wagyu burger with a meat from the R-C Ranch. The burger looked small but after I finished it , I was full !! The taste is - oh my god - so good, simply fresh food, good bread in a combo with hot fries a drink". My advice: just go to try it !! Thank you chef Chris! Will come again for sure

Yelp
They got one of the best milkshakes I've had they're very addicting to drink, costumer service, the burgers were very good too they had a good amount of everything and very flavorful, and don't even get me started on the fries SO MUCH FLAVOR!!!!!!!Love this place so much.

Yelp
Ordered two different burgers - so disappointing - they were VERY bland, dry and expensive. Fries were good.

Yelp
Burgers are expensive for what you get but are tasty! We were able to get single patty burgers and they took $2 off the price. Potatoes/fries are really good!

Yelp
Okay let's start by saying it was a good burger but Hay Merchant absolutely spoiled me and created an experience not likely to be topped. I ordered the burger but I had to add mayo packages. The fries say ranch seasoned but the flavor wasn't noticeable or memorable. If I'm in the area I'll go but it's not something I'll travel for.

Yelp
I will start off with price. A meal for my family of 4 came out to $68. One of these a kids burger. The burger flavor was good however it was mostly all pink. Even the kids burger was medium rare. I had to cook it a bit longer at home as we normally eat burgers medium. These were all all the way pink. The service was good and the people were friendly inside. However, for the reasons above I will not come back.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to trying these burgers and I was so disappointed when I tried one. I really expected these to be beautiful burgers as advertised and considering that it belongs to Chef Shepherd I had high expectations... I had the Wagyu Burger and it was not great... the lettuce was all soft and wilted and the two pickles were limp and tasteless ... like it all steamed in the wrapping paper and became one texture and the taste was not all that special... the cheese was like a cheese sauce not a slice probably due to being wrapped in the paper as well. I ate in the establishment seems like burgers should be served out of the wrapping in that case. There are much better burgers around the city... this is a miss.. The fries were good though!!

Yelp
Visited the farmers market last week and ate lunch at Underbelly Burger. We got 2 burgers w/ fries, a hot dog, and 1 drinks. Burgers were OK but kind of small. Hot dog was really a sausage sliced lengthwise in a bun. Again it was OK. The fries were yummy. We were a bit disappointed. Our lunch bill came to over $50. We expected something better for that price. We are new to Houston and had heard that the owner was an amazing chef. He was on Top Chef Houston's second episode! But that renown, unfortunately, didn't translate to this burger place. We were astonished that the drinks were served in styrofoam cups. Seriously?! Come on Underbelly -- you can do better! I'm taking off a star for the styrofoam... That said, I encourage everyone to come to this farmer's market and support the vendors there! The produce is great and there is a lot of fun stuff in the market.
