In the heart of Rittenhouse Square, Uni Japanese pairs sushi and Japanese comfort food in a cozy, no-frills setting that's perfect for late-night bites.
"If you’re in Rittenhouse Square and have money leftover after paying for an hour of parking, there’s a new sushi spot for you. At Uni Japanese, you can grab a seat at the wooden tables, or place an order online and take a bento box or bowl of ramen to go. There are starters like crab rangoon and soft shell tempura before heading to specialty rolls that are all $20 and under. We checked out Uni Japanese and added it to our Hit List." - candis mclean, alison kessler
"Thanks to its rundown exterior and manga covering the walls, Uni Japanese feels like a 50-year-old speakeasy izakaya that never got its liquor delivery (luckily, it’s a BYOB). While the chipped paint doesn’t exactly scream “excellent chicken katsu,” that’s what you’ll find in this easygoing Rittenhouse restaurant. There’s a sushi bar up front ideal for a comforting bowl of omurice, while in the back couples and friends split decent gyoza and sushi rolls that look like mini gardens on the plate—plastic trees included. The katsu, however, is a showstopper, doused in a generous onion gravy while still maintaining its juicy crispness. Stop in if you live nearby and you’ll see most of the neighborhood (or anyone as obsessed with ramen or tasty soy-soaked chicken as us). " - candis mclean, alison kessler
"This Rittenhouse Square treasure offers a small selection of hibachi dishes. Treat yourself to the Hibachi Noodles (egg noodles stir-fried with onions, scallions, carrots, and egg) or the Hibachi Combo (made with chicken, shrimp, and steak)." - George Banks-Weston
