LA’s New Restaurant Openings

Best Under-the-Radar New Restaurant Openings to Check Out in Los Angeles, February 2025 | Eater LA

"A wafu pasta specialist blending Japanese ingredients and flavors with classic Italian noodle dishes; the menu is divided into sections with different sauce bases, including an uni-based sauce, white cream sauce, and Bolognese. The classic uni cream pasta is recommended as a great place to start on a first visit." - Rebecca Roland

4 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: February 21 | Eater LA

"This new Japanese-Italian pasta spot reflects how Italian food in Japan has become its own genre, blending classic spaghetti dishes with a slight edge of Japanese sensibility and flavoring; bolognese, for example, can come with sliced mushrooms and asparagus nestled into a tangle of al dente noodles and mellow meat sauce. The menu includes pollock roe-cream mentaiko, uni cream, and curry bolognese, all tossed with long, chewy spaghetti strands. The restaurant only opened a week and a half ago and still seems to be getting its sea legs from an operations standpoint—not that service is slow or inattentive; food arrived quickly and piping hot, though staff might tell diners that wait times for a seat could be 30 or more minutes when it might actually be well under that. Going in with those expectations, the place is "here to please and feed," with heaping pasta portions served on hearty diner plates—expect to go home very, very full. — Matthew Kang, lead editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest" - Eater Staff

Google
Unico Tokyo Pasta is a nice spot for a date night or a casual hangout with friends. The vibe and decoration are modern and relaxed, so it’s a comfortable place to sit and enjoy dinner. The pasta dishes are decent and taste good, but nothing really stands out as memorable. The staff is super friendly and gives good recommendations, but overall this is the type of place you try once and probably won’t think about going back again. The pasta prices are on the higher side, and the portions are just standard. Quick tips: You can make reservations through Google Maps, but the restaurant usually isn’t very packed at night. There’s plenty of parking shared with the pizza place and nearby shops behind the restaurant, plus street parking.

Was really excited to try this! I liked the drinks, especially the White Peach Margarita was tasty and easy to drink. I liked the hardness of the pasta. Only thing is that the Garlic Chicken was bland. I thought there will be more punch of garlic but there was no hint of garlic I could taste. My friend got the Uni Truffle and that had more flavor. Service was super great and attentative. I gave the food a 3 because it is on the pricier side. Would have gave a 5 if my Garlic Chicken had more flavor. Or maybe have condiments to add the flavor would have been great. Overall great atmosphere, drinks, and service.

Google
I really wanted to like this place given its attempt to take on a Japanese and Italian pasta fusion. Everything tasted fine, but it was very standard. There wasn't a dish that stood out. I was most excited for the uni truffle pasta. However, aside from being able to taste the ocean saltiness and some artificial fragrance of truffle, there was just something missing. The noodle itself was the most disappointing. Tasted like grocery store bought ones such as Barilla. I didn't expect them to be homemade, but they could've sourced it better. The price is average. I will say the only redeeming qualities are the quantity and well decorated interior. Plenty of free parking in the lot. Unfortunately I do not think I'll be returning.

We came here for the DineLA experience and it was definitely a solid choice. We had to deduct a star because they had run out of Cauliflower Soup as the appetizer, the Unico Salad Panko wasn't as warm and crispy as we would have expected and the Garlic Bread was just average. The Garlic Shrimp and Chicken Shisolico were delicious but someone in our party thought hat instead of fusion, we had basically ordered two italian dishes with hardly any "Japanese" in the food. We will come back here and try one of the other dishes and will update this review.

Google
A delicious and unique dining experience! I love both Italian and Japanese food so this fusion restaurant was right up my alley. The white peach margarita was enough for me to come back! It took me a long time to order because everything sounded so good! We ordered the curry bolognese and the uni truffle pasta- both went beyond our expectations! Can’t wait to try more dishes in the future!

Google
First time here bc its DineLA menu looked very enticing. I was disappointed bc the place had no AC for a warm evening; we got seated at a tiny table even though it was at 20% occupancy: all wooden chairs or wooden bench with a very thin cushion so not comfortable; we asked for ice water but got chilled water, by now my appetite was gone. The dishes were ok, didn’t like the cabbage and asparagus in the spaghetti with Shrimps/ ground beef. Soup n salad were coffee shop quality. The servers were really nice tho.

Google
Wasted Money, Wasted Calories. As soon as I looked at menu, we should have walked out. I didn’t realize it was part of the Japonica chain until we had already ordered appetizers. Japonica is terrible but this was worse. We ordered the burrata, the butter garlic shrimp and the garlic bread. The shrimp was flavorless and no garlic or butter was ever in its vicinity. The five tiny shrimp floated in a vat of overly rosemaried olive oil atop 5 canned rubbery slices of mushroom. Completely awful. We then figured we’d make the best of it and try the “most popular” vodka pasta. This was so immediately “chef boyardee” with the matching teenie tiney canned vienna sausage weenies cut into it. If my 10 year old child made this, I would have pretended to eat it and loved it and thrown it out. We threw the fork in and asked for the check. How anyone thinks this is passable food to serve in a restaurant and charge for it, is mind blowing to us. Atmosphere is cute, love the design. However, if you want a cool loud vibe, at least splurge on some speakers around the place not just a faint blown out echo of inaudible music coming from one device in the kitchen. Service was friendly, but our server didn’t check on us and we bussed ourselves. Our server also lied about the ingredients of the food. Would never recommend! Save yourselves.

Google
Second time visiting, got the Napolitan pasta and it was delicious! Incredible flavor and our server Dennis recommended adding Tabasco and it was the perfect addition. Love the variety of sauces and this trip made me excited to come back and try more!

Yelp
We got the Spicy Vodka and Curry Bolognese to go. The portions are HUGEEEE Personally: Spicy Vodka was my favourite! I love the smoked Berkshire sausage! This pasta reminded me of filipino spaghetti. me- 9/10 sonny - 8.75/10 Curry Bolognese was somewhat mid, but not too bad. My fiancé liked it . he said just enough curry seasoning to it me- 7/10 sonny- 7.75/10

Yelp
We got the Napolitan and Yasai Bolognese and they were both delicious! We had the strawberry cheesecake pudding for dessert and it was refreshing and yummy! The parking was easy and the restaurant was very quant and homey! Patrick was our server and was extremely courteous and and attentive! Will definitely be coming back to try more items off of their menu!

Yelp
Amazing food, a nice blend of Italian and Japanese cuisines. Patrick was super nice and available! I'd definitely come again :)

Yelp
bf couldn't find the mexican place he remembered from three decades ago, so we stopped here on a whim appetizers : burrata caprese and garlic bread. these go super well together! main : spicy vodka and chicken shisolito. al dente pasta in super creamy sauce satisfactory portion size/pricing ratio, great ambiance, and amazing service from patrick who was preemptive about our needs + didn't blink at us vanishing for a midmeal maltipoo potty break (we think she has a uti) thanks unico!

Yelp
This tiny place has one of the most delicious pasta I've had. The garlic chicken was great. I love garlic noodles/pasta and this was just perfect. We tried to Uni truffle, chick alfredo, and the bolognese. All great. The place is a bit loud for a small place. I guess people's voice just bounces of the walls. They also have music playing that can be turned down just a little. There is a parking lot in the back they share with other businesses in the plaza. Street parking is an option but I believe it is metered so look at signs. Staff was very nice and pleasant but it may be a small challenge to get their attention. Not an issue if you're patient.

Yelp
Review here is from the Dine LA Week menu only. When Dine LA Week is here, I take advantage and try out places I've been wanting to go and this was one of them. I got the Uni Truffle pasta dish, side salad and garlic bread. The uni pasta was creamy, al dente and flavorful. Did I taste any uni? Yes, I did. Truffle? Eh, a little. I could have used more, but the portion was a decent size. The garlic bread was crunchy and slathered with butter. Salad was good and sprinkied with panko crumbs. Would I get this again? Yes, I would even if it were no longer on the Dine LA menu. There were other dishes on offer, but I was too late to try those as the special was over the next day. Would I come back? I might if I were in the mood to splurge or try something new.

Yelp
I've been here twice in the same month and both times it has been a HIT. I wasn't sure about this place because I've been to Spoon House so many times and even though it's extremely popular and beloved, I never understood why. But this place is actually worth and the pasta is actually good. My personal favorite is the Mentaiko pasta. They serve their dishes hot, and their noodles perfectly al dente. I HATE overcooked pasta and I'm a huge texture person, so being able to eat al dente, chewy noodles is SO satisfying. I will be back again for sure. Thank you for finally making my japanese pasta experience so memorable.

Yelp
We were excited to try out this popular Japanese Italian place. Overall experience was ok. The Japanese side did not really pop out for me and it can't really compare with a full blown Italian restaurant. I was surprised to learn that the only type of pasta available is Spaghetti, it was al dente all right, but actually a little too dry and hard for me. I'll ask for it to cook a little longer if we come again. The sauce was on the salty side, and the meat (or seafood) is in the lighter side. The service was good, there were some issues with their waitlist system which caused a lot of confusion at first, but we got seated ok. The waitress was friendly, helpful ,and prompt.

Yelp
Was really excited a new Japanese style pasta place opened up but overall I think it's nothing special. The place is cute and I like some of the high countertop tables and has an open feel. The menu is pretty straightforward and the pasta dishes were alright. What really turned us off were the Caesar salad. The romaine lettuce tasted stale and the dressing was just gross. They asked us if something was wrong with the salad and we were honest about what we thought so they took it off the bill which is why I'm giving a 3 star instead of 2...

Yelp
Came here for dinner with a group of friends around 5pm and there were plenty of parking spots and tables available for us to be seated right away. My husband and I shared the Uni ebi and the curry bolognese, which sounded really interesting. Between the two, we both enjoyed the uni ebi more! Perfectly creamy and smooth, uni flavor wasn't overpowering but pleasant. The curry bolognese had a good curry flavor but I wished it had more of a sauce because it was feeling dry. That is my only critique. Otherwise, everyone enjoyed their pastas! It's all made with spaghetti noodles. I wonder how it would be with other type of pastas that could store more of the sauce/flavor hmmm

Yelp
Hearty pasta options in an intimate setting right off the PCH. Luckily my friends and I were sat immediately as we were starved after a fun day in Long Beach. Our server was friendly, quick, and mostly attentive as the restaurant was a little busy. We all were very fast with making our selections from the menu so from the time of arrival to the time we got our food must have only been a 15 minute span lol. We had plans to go out later that evening so their $4 house coffee was clutch! It was an easy brew and came out with cream and sugar on the side. Perfect for me. There's free refills up to 3, so I was definitely wired after dinner lol. As for the Curry Bolognese on god it was some of the best pasta I've had. This was my first experience having Italian pasta with an Asian touch! The curry was not over powering but flavorful just enough to perfectly complement the meaty fill and sprinkle of veg. Our dinner experience was outstanding. We all cleaned off our plates and enjoyed the experience. The portions are worth the price in my opinion as the plates were quality!!! Would love to return if I'm ever in the area again.

Yelp
I was looking for a relaxing lunch spot to dine solo and came across Unico Tokyo Pasta along PCH, and it looked like the perfect spot. I cozied up with my kindle, a fun drink, and a plate of hearty Uni Yasai pasta. I was happy with my veggie choice, since the crunchy asparagus and earthy mushrooms balanced out the creaminess of the uni sauce. Safe to say that this spot ticked all the boxes for me on my solo lunch journey--tasty food, chill vibe--a must when in the South Bay!
google avatar

Derek T.

Yelp
Who doesn't know Japanese-Italian fusion? And this is a welcome and unico addition to South Bay's pasta scene. It's good without being too similar to Spoon House or Akane Chaya. So what did we get? Try Uni Truffle Cream Pasta, it's uni, it's truffle, it's creamy. That alone should tell you what kind of flavor bomb to expect. I was tempted to steal more from my fiancé but I didn't wanna sleep on the couch that night. I got the beef curry bolognese pasta and wow, was it packed with whole lot of savory and umami goodness. All the flavors are distinct yet complement each other well and the sauce leaves a nice, stained mess on your mouth so get those napkins ready. Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed this too. Patrick, our server, made sure to attend to everything we needed and made our meal all the more pleasant! This is a great up and coming Japanese pasta joint you don't wanna miss out on!

Yelp
Good, hearty pasta with a fancy schmancy twist - I like it. Uni Pasta is a top 5 for me, so I had to try Unico Tokyo. Portions here are decent, and the food is relatively heavy and rich, so this Uni Pasta did not disappoint. I would have appreciated a creamier taste, but not a biggie. I also tried the Wagyu Beef and Pancetta Bolognese - I may have liked this better than the Uni Pasta, surprisingly, though it is pretty conventional in nature. Unico Tokyo is a small-ish spot with seating inside and outside. There wasn't a wait on a Friday evening, and service was efficient and polite. Street parking is your best bet. I will be back soon to try something new!
google avatar

Kelsey C.

Yelp
A clean and simple menu, just two little pages of pasta and sauces, and they only serve spaghetti. Amazing spaghetti. Uni Truffle is an expected hit, dressed with ingredients that are meant to impress. The show-stealer is a simple Yuzu Peperoncino, where the little pancetta bits are a hit, yuzu pepper pops, and garlic and red chili to bring on the (addictive) heat. The Yasai Bolognese get overshadowed, lost in the shuffle between two absolute standouts. It's pretty great though, especially as leftovers - it's an incredibly polished bolognese. Every item from this menu has amazing, and I would even order one of their mocktails again!

Yelp
We were so excited to see a Tokyo pasta shop open near us! And right next to its sister japonica. Unico is a super cute place for a date night to sit outside. Menu is very simple with a couple pasta dishes in the traditional Japanese style sauces. We came during dineLA which came with an appetizer and we got the garlic bread and cauliflower soup. The garlic bread was crisp and tasty and the cauliflower soup was quite sweet. We ordered the most popular curry bolognese which was packed with flavor and the uni truffle. The uni truffle was very fishy and a little clumpy but good if you like rich pasta. The pasta took while, around 40 minutes to come out. A nice simple place for a meal if you're in the mood for pasta but a little different!

Yelp
So happy to have discovered this new Japanese-Italian Pasta spot! The menu mainly consists of pasta dishes with a few different options for salads and appetizers. We got the Uni Yasai and Chicken Shisolico Pastas. The Uni Yasai came with sea urchin, asparagus, mushroom, microgreens, and a wedge of lemon. Creamy, tasty, and I liked the vegetables they used in this pasta! The Chicken Shisolico was also good. It came with a Japanese shiso herb basil pesto, which I haven't seen before, Jidori free range chicken breast, and a wedge of lemon. Between the two, the uni pasta was definitely more flavorful, but I enjoyed both! I also thought it was interesting that their pastas come with lemon! It adds a nice refreshing flavor to the pasta, so I'd definitely recommend squeezing some on. The restaurant has a nice modern ambiance, and there is outdoor patio seating as well. Service was friendly! Parking is located behind in the back. You can access the parking lot from either Pacific Coast Hwy or Avenue F.

Yelp
Solid spot for unique japanese italian pastas and drinks. I love love love when pastas are done al dente (as the italians do) and Unico does this well on top of incorporating Japanese flavors and flair. And it's a cute interior and I love how all the employees have matching jean aprons. - Burrata Caprese $7.00: so simple but oh so delicious and refreshing. fresh cherry tomatoes covered in a tart vinaigrette, balanced with the honey and generous blob of burrata. would get again!! - Yuzu Peperoncino $21.00: our waiter said this is very spicy, but for someone who tolerates the mango habanero at wingstop/bww, this was nothing lol. If anything it's a slow kick, and the crispy thick pork bits were yummy too! This was a light, more tangy take on pasta - Uni Truffle $23.00: much more creamy and rich flavors compared to the yuzu. However, also oceany ); not my favorite. the truffle was lackin - Mentaiko $20.00 (+shrimp $8): lacked in flavor as well. 4 pieces of shrimp. - Lychee Kamikaze Cocktail $14.00: YUM!! strong lychee flavor + alchie. pretty potent. The service however, was slow. Our server was nice, but there were delays in getting water, then flagging someone down to get our actual drink orders, and again for condiments (black pepper/crushed red pepper). Then the person who brought out the food (different from the person who took our orders), wasn't very pleasant as he ushered the food to the table (and gave it to the wrong people) and he spoke so quickly and loudly that my SO was startled LOL On a Sunday around 7PM, we easily found street parking (we didn't realize there was a parking lot lol). I would come back to try the curry bolognese next time.

Yelp
Everything was so good! Came here as a party of 2. Ordered the: -Burrata Caprese (part of the lunch special) - such a good appetizer. -Uni Truffle -Chicken Shisolico (a nice and light pasta choice - the pesto is not heavy) Restaurant has super casual comfy vibes. Great place to come for lunch or dinner. There's a small parking lot in the back of the restaurant. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Had to think long on this one. The service and the staff are great The ambiance is very cool BUT the food is very ordinary Given it's an Italian/Japanese fusion I guess I wasn't sure what to expect. Bog standard Italian food was NOT it With that being said, for standard Italian fare it's quite ok. But the menu doesn't hold up to the promise of a cool fusion. One thing is that you get a discount on japonica on the bill. Now THATS a fantastic place to eat
google avatar

Yelp
Solid Japanese Italian fusion restaurant. That's open decently late until 10 PM. They do have a waitlist on Yelp, so make sure you join if it's a busier day. We came really late night on a Saturday, so there was a slight wait for a party of 5, but no longer than 10 minutes for us to chat. There's parking in the back, but just know that it does get tight and it's up a slightly steep hill, especially if you are driving stick, have an old car, etc. There is street parking into the nearby neighborhood, but just pay attention to parking signs. Service is super friendly and welcoming, quite efficient as well. All of the pasta that we got were spaghetti style and their restaurant. Their tomato sauce pastas are umami loaded and their wafu sauce pasta is made with smoked soy sauce, which is a pretty neat way to reinforce some of our favorite comfort food flavors. We got the: 1) Jidori chicken: -This is a cold appetizer dish with 5 slices of free range Jidori chicken breast with some cherry tomatoes, and shiso basil pesto on top. -Cold and refreshing, meat was moist, went great with the strong taste of the pesto. 2) Uni Cream: -This is made with their premium sea urchin cream sauce with microgreens on top. This dish doesn't come with meat, but there are different versions where you can get a protein. -A must, super creamy and delicious with the microgreens adding an earthy taste and some extra texture. Definitely higher quality uni as it doesn't taste like you're scraping the bottom of the ocean. 3) Unico Bolognese: -This is their wagyu beef with pancetta bolognese. -Very meaty, hearty bolognese. Pretty good especially if you want a more meat based dish. 4) Spicy Vodka: -This is their tomato sauce pasta made with smoked Berkshire sausage, broccoli, and their Unico spicy vodka sauce. -My favorite of the bunch, comes with a slight spicy kick, has a nice balance of both meat and veggies, and you can never go wrong with the tangy kick of tomato. 5) White Peach Beach: -Carbonated mocktail with a sweet and refreshing peach flavor. Not bad and a great way to balance out the flavors of the pasta that we got. Just know that they specialize and do a great job in what they do to enhance the toppings and the sauces for the pasta. However, if you're not the biggest spaghetti fan and want an all for one Japanese Italian fusion restaurant (other forms of pasta or dishes, this may not be the place). However, I enjoyed our visit and wish that we had one of these in the 626.

Yelp
Small restaurant that specializes in Japanese style pasta. Service was quick and attentive but we came early, around 4:30pm. Not a huge menu but enough different dishes to keep it interesting. Had the bolognese and napolitan Both had decent flavor but neither was that saucy which is the style of Japanese pasta. The napolitan is sweeter and the sausage tastes like hot dogs. Not sure I would go back. Need to try Pasta Stories and go back to Spoon House to see what I like better.

Yelp
Two of my favorite cuisines in one, yes please! Located off of PCH, Unico Tokyo Pasta will give life to your taste buds. They have a parking lot in the back or street parking nearby. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Cute outdoor patio with nice plants for decor and a modern, tiled kitchen design for inside. I recommend making a reservation or keeping an eye out on their waitlist ahead of time for those busier nights. Very warm and welcoming staff! Felt very taken care of. Their Unico salad is basically a caesar salad in a chilled bowl, good individual portion. Our entrees were hot and filled with flavor! The curry bolognese had a great kick to it without being overtly spicy. The dish that is similar to pesto had a sweet flavor that I really enjoyed. Will be coming back to bring friends and try more unique dishes!!

Yelp
I was excited to try Unico, a new hot spot for Japanese-Italian pasta, as I'm a huge fan of Japonica next door, the sister restaurant. The food here was good, but the service was odd and left more to be desired. Specifically, the staff seemed nice but they did not let us order from the special DineLA prix fixe menu, and we felt singled out and disrespected as meanwhile other tables around us were allowed to order this same deal. I came Sunday evening, and when we asked for the DineLA menu, we were told they didn't have it because they ran out of the salad (which is one of the 3 courses of the $25 set menu). Instead I was told we could only order a la carte from the regular menu, which ends up being more expensive and you don't get to try as many food items that way. Our server said there wasn't anything he could do, as he couldn't enter it into their computer ordering system without the salad. We expressed our frustration but went along with it as we had already waited a long time for a table (the Yelp waitlist kept on extending longer than the original estimated wait time, so we were famished at that point) and we didn't want to get into a kerfuffle over it. All seemed OK, until we saw what was happening at the table next to us. They were seated after us, ordered later, and received their food before we did. But the problem came when I saw that they were receiving the courses from the DineLA menu (including 3 of the salads) and I heard the people at the table even comment "that was a great DineLA menu." We asked our waiter about this and were told an odd excuse about how they happened to have a few salads from a to-go order that didn't get picked up and so that's how the table got to get the DineLA menu. Our waiter then managed to scrounge up a single salad and gave it to us; appreciated the gesture but then things got weirder. Our waiter later disappeared and someone else was helping us. We asked the other waiter why other people were being offered the DineLA menu when we were not allowed to; we could hear the service at other tables around us. We were told that they ran out of the salad and the manager had to "run to Smart N Final" to get more, so that they once again had salad so could do the DineLA menu again. So, basically there was a 10-minute window where they wouldn't offer the DineLA menu -- and we were the only table NOT allowed to order it and get this special deal. I understand when restaurants have to make adjustments or can't offer an advertised prix fixe menu for whatever reason, but not when I've been singled out and everyone else around me is allowed to order the special deal and I am not. For the food, it was pretty tasty and served piping hot and fresh. I ordered the curry bolognese spaghetti (which had just the right balance and spice from Japanese curry), regular bolognese spaghetti, and the Shiso leaf pesto pasta. Unfortunately, the food alone is not worth it for me to come back. I'm a solid home chef and regularly cook a ton of different cuisines at home, so when I go out to eat I'm looking for decent service as well. I don't appreciate being singled out and treated like this, and for that we will not be returning and I've already told friends about my strange dining experience here. I do not recommend this place because of the service.

Yelp
Entering this place, it felt very cozy and intimate. Each table had its own little lamp. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. I was excited to try anything off the menu. I started off with a White Peach Beach Mocktail. First sip felt like I was drowning in sugar.... Perhaps I should have stirred it a bit more but it was overly sweet. Letting the ice water it down a bit did not really help. We settled on getting Jidori Chicken for an appetizer. The chicken was bland. The pesto flavor that was drizzled onto it quickly disappears as you bite into the chicken breast. Although the flavor of the shiso basil added a freshness, however fleeting, did not save this dish. Perhaps the ratio of the chicken and pesto sauce was off but all I could really taste was the cold slice of unflavored chicken. Our main dishes were the Curry Bolognese and Mentaiko. The Curry Bolognese was okay. Although I am familiar with wagyu, I was most excited to taste curry on pasta since I have never had that before. Unfortunately I felt the wagyu beef was lost in all the flavors. I couldn't tell it from regular ground beef on pasta. I enjoyed the dish, I just wasn't blown away by it. And since it is a meat sauce it was heavy. I was full by the time I finished the dish. Next up I tried some of the Mentaiko. I felt like this was the highlight of my experience. I love the balance of the creamy cod roe on the pasta. It was light. It was creamy. The addition of the cod roe was perfect. This is something I would definitely recommend and go back for and experience for a 2nd time.

Yelp
Unico Tokyo Pasta was such a fun and unique spot, we ordered almost everything off the DineLA menu, and overall the flavors were great. The mentaiko pasta was definitely my favorite; super savory, creamy, and well-balanced. That said, I do wish they had more variety in appetizers or lighter dishes. With so many pastas, it ended up feeling a bit carb-heavy and repetitive. A few small plates to break things up would've made the meal feel more complete. Customer service could also use some improvement. No one was rude, but the vibe wasn't the most attentive or welcoming. Still, for a creative take on Japanese-style pasta, it's worth checking out, especially if you love mentaiko!

Yelp
Really really good pasta me and one of my besties had been trying to check it out bc we are huge fans of both Japanese food and Italian so loved to see this fusion and pasta was really good. Just would've wished they had more veggie appetizer options like roasted carrots or Brussels sprouts etc all they had was salad. Ambiance is okay, would've preferred if it was by the water or in riviera village but it's just on a random street.

Yelp
I always love it whenever dineLA comes along because it gives me an opportunity to try out new restaurants all while getting a good deal. Unico Tokyo Pasta has been on my bookmarks for quite sometime now and when I was saw they were part of this year's dineLA participants, I knew it was a perfect time to check this spot out. Located at PCH, Unico Tokyo Pasta is next to South Bay Pizza. There is plenty of parking at the back. The restaurant has seating both inside and outside. When we came the spot was moderately busy. Though we were seated right away, it took a little bit for them took our order. They also didn't give the dineLA menu and so we had to ask for that. My friend and I both chose to partake in dineLA. The dineLA offering is $25 and is a three course that comes with a first course of their Unico salad, a second course with choice of Koji Cauliflower Soup or Garlic Bread and a third course with choice of their Uni Truffle, Curry Bolognese, Napolitan, Yuzu Pepperoncino, Chicken Shisolico, Mentaiko, Garlic Salmon and Garlic Shrimp. The Unico Salad made for a great first course. The salad consist of romaine hearts as it's based and is topped with panko crumbs and Caesar dressing. I loved that they were generous with the panko crumbs and Caesar dressing. The salad was delicious. For our second course, both my friend and I chose to get their Koji Cauliflower Soup. This soup consists of cauliflower and Koji probiotics. The Koji probiotics gave this soup a sweet and savory umami flavor. Soup overall was simple yet full of depth. For our main entrees, I chose the Curry Bolgonese and my friend got the Chicken Shisolico. The Curry Bolognese is one of their most popular dishes. The spaghetti noodles is topped with Japanese curry, Wagyu beef pancetta Bolognese, asparagus, onion and mushroom. The curry packed a subtle punch that delivered a rich and satisfying spicy taste. I liked the mix Wagyu beef and pancetta Bolognese. The asparagus was a great touch and added a fresh, crunchy texture. My only complaint would be I wish they added more asparagus. I tried a little bit of my friend's Chicken Shisolico. This spaghetti dish had Japanese shiso herb, basil pesto and Jidori chicken. This was a very light dish. It wasn't as flavorful as my pasta and I do think it could have used more sauce. Overall I enjoyed my first visit to Unico Tokyo Pasta. The dineLA deal is a good one to get a taste of their different dishes! For the future, I may try out their Happy Hour deals and their lunch deals Monday thru Thursday.

Yelp
What a delightful meal! My bf and I were in the area and found this place upon looking on Yelp. I was craving pasta, so we decided on it. At 4:30PM on a Sunday, we were seated immediately. We didn't realize it was Dine LA week, but it worked out perfectly. For $25 per person, we got a salad, a choice between goji cauliflower soup or garlic bread, and a choice of some selected pastas. I chose the Chicken Shisolico and bf decided on the Uni Truffle. The food all came out pretty fast! We were maybe halfway through our salads when the garlic bread came out and it wasn't long before the pastas came out. The unico salad was very refreshing. The garlic bread came out crispy and paired well with our pastas. I really enjoyed the chicken shisolico! It had Japanese shiso herbs, basil pesto, and jidori chicken. I loved that I didn't feel too heavy afterwards, which is how I typically feel after a pasta dish. The chicken was in bite sized pieces covered in sauce, it was simply amazing. I typically don't really like it overly saucy, and I felt like this dish was the perfect amount. I would 100% come back for this again. The Uni Truffle was very fragrant and had a strong seafood taste, which is never a bad thing! It just isn't my personal favorite. He did enjoy his dish though. The service was great. They were friendly and checked in on us often. The space inside is very modern and clean. Parking is in the back and can be limited as it is shared among other businesses so I imagine it may be difficult to find a spot during busier times. I can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Tasty food, valuable portions, fun flavors, clean/ cute ambience. Go for DineLA if you can! DineLA was a great value for $25 per meal: - salad - choice of cauliflower soup or 2-piece garlic bread - choice of pasta (appeared full dinner-sized) Salad was simple with crisp lettuce (?iceberg), mayo-based dressing, and topped with my favorite part: breadcrumbs and ?sesame. I ate it all! Garlic bread was 2 thin, crispy toast slices: a great complement to the soup and pasta (though for dineLA recommend to bring a friend to share/trade garlic bread and soup. If you must choose one appetizer: cauliflower soup was amazing. I probably would not have ordered it on my own, but glad we tried it! It was like a light cheddar broccoli. Pastas were tasty. Uni truffle was packed with flavor and lightly creamy. Curry Bolognese was tasty, though I would've preferred more tomato sauce or an extra scoop of sauce in general. It felt slightly dry. Drinks were not part of the DineLA option, but we wanted a shirley temple and peach beach mocktail (like a sparkling peach lemonade with a lovely tartness). The drink was one of my favorite parts of the meal. Service was prompt, attentive, and genuinely nice. I enjoyed the spacious layout full of small groups and pairs. A good place for a date, nice casual dinner with friends, or calmer family vibes. Would like to return to try more pasta and get the soup again!

Yelp
Decided to try UNICO TOKYO PASTA after it caught our eye as we drove by one night. Looked up the menu and it had potential since we've had Japanese-Italian fusion pasta dishes before and loved it. We made reservations just to be sure, but you can also join the waitlist via Yelp, which is super convenient! Very simple, classic farmhouse style, with cute seating inside, as well as outside. For the food, we really enjoyed it -- Garlic bread was good, tasty appetizer to hold you over until your main dish comes, or even to eat with your pasta. We tried the curry bolognese, Uni truffle, and the garlic salmon pastas. All were so delicious, and if I had to rank them in order of preference, it would be in that exact order. We ordered the chocolate ganache to try and to cleanse our palate. Served warm and a nice treat after all these different flavors, but nothing special. Service was great. Our server made sure to check on us and that we had everything we needed, but wasn't overbearing. There's also a small lot behind for parking. Overall a wonderful experience, we will be back for sure!

Yelp
Sunday 3/16/25. Got to the restaurant at 11:20a, got a table right away, but the restaurant filled up quickly shortly after. The pasta was underwhelming. I do prefer a lighter flavoring of my pasta sauce, however the dishes we tried here were almost flavorless. Service felt rushed. We won't come back.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place after I saw it on TikTok. My favorite dish here was the Mentaiko and the Burrata Caprese! I do wish the Burrata Caprese had a crunch with it, so it was great on top of the garlic bread. The garlic bread was good too. I wish the uni truffle had more of a uni taste, couldn't really taste that at all. The vibes here were chill and nice casual-esque. With everything we ordered, for two people, we still had a little leftover (we might be smaller eaters though lol). They have a private parking lot, no issues finding a spot when we came later in the night during a weekday. We made a reservation through Yelp and was seated pretty quickly. I would come back to try more things!

Yelp
Love love love this place! I love Japanese food and Italian and this is def the spot! Coming from the Bay Area I've tried a place that has the Japanese Italian fusion, this place just feels like there's more options for pasta! We started off with the Burrata Caprese and it was so refreshing and yummy. The burrata hit the spot and it came with some bomb a$$ garlic bread. We also got the curry bolognese & the napolitan spaghetti. At first I couldn't tell which one I liked better because both were sooooo good. The curry bolognese was such a unique pasta, the taste of Japanese curry with bolognese was something I wouldn't have thought of to pair so well together. The napolitan was the star of the show, it was exactly like how the spaghetti we had in Japan and it was soooo yummy. Light weight on the sweet side, but truly light weight bc it still catered to the Italian kind of spaghetti. The Japonica Rice Lager my friend got was also so refreshing and nice, perfect for a warm day. The pastas came out pretty quick after we ordered too. There's street parking or a lot in the back. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Located on the corner of PCH and Avenue F, the restaurant has its own parking lot and indoor seating for 60 people plus outdoor tables for 20. Inside it is bright and clean, with the vibe of a modern eatery with its open kitchen, porcelain wood look tile floor and monochromatic decor. 5 stars for the attentive waitress who brought the menu and water right away and patiently explained to us difference between the dishes and sauces. We ordered the following: Uni Cream: Off course we must try its signature dish. The noodles were cooked perfectly with a very nice texture. However, the sauce was quite thick and not really creamy. Also, there was just a hint of Uni which I wish would stand out more in the sauce. The flavor was on the light side and slightly sweet. Good but not at umami level. Garlic Anchovy with Chicken: Even though I was anticipating the sauce to be briny due to anchovy, the excessive saltness was beyond my expectation and overpowered the overall taste of the sauce. The chicken breast bits were a great healthy choice but slightly on the dry side. The noodles were cooked to perfection and al dente. The prices were reasonable for the portions and location. IMHO, the restaurant has the potential to be one of the go-to places for Japanese pasta in South Bay, they just need to make some tweaking on the sauces.

Yelp
If you like pasta with a Japanese flare, this is exactly the place you're looking for. Reminded me of eating in Japan. There's an iPad near the door, right inside. You enter yourself onto the waitlist, name and cell phone number. There are a few tables outdoors, but most of the tables are inside. Tables for groups of two to four. The indoor tables are spaced pretty close together. The gentleman who worked there provided my party of two with the option of the corner table at a high table or regular table. I opted for the latter, but once the party next to me with two children sat down, we moved and sat at the high table for less crowding. No problem. The waiter was smart. He gave us a sample of the white wine. It was so good, we ordered a glass each, and received a full poor. I ordered the Bolognese pasta. The pasta was perfectly al dente. The meat sauce was delicious. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and appear to enjoy what they do. There's free street parking right in front of the restaurant, off of Pacific Coast Highway.

Yelp
First time dining here as I drive pass every day. Made a decision to make a Yelp reservation, which was helpful. They offer lunch specials as well as Happy Hour deals. Parking lot behind and along the side of the restaurant and shared with a few other eateries and a bar. Outdoor dining area along with indoor dining. Our server was very nice and when we mentioned it was our first time, he made some recommendations. He was so excited about his descriptions of the dishes that he was salivated while he spoke. Very charming. We ordered mocktails, garlic bread and pasta entrees. Please note that the side salad was only $3, which is unheard of!! No room for dessert. Thanks for the experience. Ok, bye

Yelp
I wouldn't tell anyone not to go here. I wouldnt tell anyone they absolutely need to try it. It was just kind of... fine. We had the curry Bolognese, garlic salmon, and cauliflower soup. Both of the pastas were good, not great. The soup was pretty tasty. The service was average in a good way. Pleasant but nothing stood out, positive or negative. Overall, I think it just lacks a bit of identity. For all the talk of uni, the fact that it's not offered standalone to try it before having it mixed in to a sauce, and that our server didn't recommend the uni cream pasta. Bad sign. I would have liked to see something about where they source it from, how they prepare it, and the story behind it. It's in the name. And there is a lot of bad uni out there so I'm not going out on a limb to try it. But I think it speaks a lot about how they've designed the restaurant, service, and menu. It was a good meal but at the same time it was forgettable.

Yelp
I was in the area, so decided to try out their tokyo pastas. I tried 3 different pastas and I think the uni pasta was my least favorite. Not sure if it's just me, but the uni didn't taste good to me. I've had uni at omakases, and that was the flavor profile I was expecting. I would recommend the unico salad and shrimp confit. The salad had a crunch to it that I like. I also really like the flavor profile of the oil in the shrimp. The other 2 pastas that I had was good though!

Yelp
Unico Tokyo Pasta is a must try spot for fusion food lovers! This spot is serving up some delicious wafu pastas, also known as Japanese-inspired pastas. To get here, there is a parking lot in the back of the restaurant or street parking all around the area. Wifey and I pulled up for lunch around 12pm and were seated right away upon arrival. They have a modern and welcoming setup with seating inside and outside on their patio. For their menu, they have a wide range of different wafu pastas and appetizers to choose from. Wifey opted for the Uni Yasai and I chose the Curry Bolognese. Overall, everything we had tasted delicious with unique flavor profiles that stood out. All of the staff here are very friendly and welcoming. Definitely book a table here for your next lunch or dinner and you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I think there may be a lot in the back, but I think it's really small, so you probably need to get lucky with street parking. My group had a reservation, so we went right in and were seated at a table. The servers were so nice and friendly! It was cute and pretty spacious in the restaurant, with tables that weren't too close together. We ordered three different pastas and just shared family style. The noodles were all cooked nicely and the pastas all came out hot and fresh! Spicy vodka was fairly spicy (to me, I am weak with spice), but still pretty sweet-- this was my favorite pasta. The curry bolognese had a strong curry flavor and was on the heavier side. The yuzu peperoncino was really spicy for some reason to me (again, I am weak), and was my least favorite. Desserts were so good. The chocolate ganache was warm and gooey, and the strawberry cheesecake pudding was my favorite! I definitely will come back here!

Yelp
Unico is a pasta based restaurant that leans towards Japanese influenced cuisine. What they offer is a variety of various pasta dishes, each with the unique flavor. They have all kinds of different varieties. They have some with meat, some without, some with garlic, some with soy sauce, some with Bolognese, some with whatever you can think of. There's a lot of choices to be made here. And, they're all pretty good. They also have a wine list, and they offer a couple of different beers. Their beer menu is pretty small. Plus, they have all of the other drinks you would expect. Overall, they offer a uniquely signature blend of both food and drink. In terms of the atmosphere, they have a number of tables around the restaurant, as well as a few outdoor tables. A couple things to think about when you come here is that they do like you to have reservations. It makes the whole thing easier. But, it is certainly not required. If you don't have a reservation, what you'll do is you walk inside and there you'll see a pad where you enter your name and phone number and this put you on the waitlist. Generally, if there's not too many people here, this is just be a few minutes of a wait. But, this tends to be a popular restaurant, it can sometimes become crowded. With this, your wait may be a little bit long if you don't have a reservation. In terms of parking, there's the obvious parking along PCH. There's not a whole lot of that, however. They do have a parking lot to the side of the restaurant and this may be your best bet. Overall, it's a casual and easy place to grab a pasta orientated meal. If that's what you're looking for, this is where you will find it in Redondo Beach.

Yelp
I've been here about 4 times now. Every time has been consistently amazing. Service was top tier and staff were friendly. I usually order the chicken alfredo or the curry bolognese. Incredibly flavorful without being overly salty. Unico is perfect for a casual dinner or a date night! I'm a regular now...

Yelp
The pasta left much to be desired, but the service was really good and quick! More of a casual dining setting. Pasta e Pasta by Allegro remains #1 to me for Japanese-Italian fusion pasta. Uni truffle pasta: 2.5/5. I could not really taste uni in this pasta, so it felt more like a very creamy truffle lemon pasta with bits of microgreens. The flavor was very one-dimensional to me and got tiring very quickly :( The microgreens didn't really add much to the pasta, and the lemon that I squeezed on top honestly didn't go too well with the pasta to me personally since it overpowered the sauce and made it too sour (maybe I added too much? but there is no such thing as too much lemon to me usually). Garlic chicken pasta: 2.5/5. I did not try this, but according to my friend, the flavors were very one-dimensional as well and she had to constantly add black pepper for more flavor.

Yelp
1. Mentaiko pasta: pasta slightly too al dente. Hoping it would be more creamy. Tasted more like cheese than mentaiko for some reason. I've had better in South Bay 2. Uni cream with truffle: pasta itself cooked better here. Nice flavor but over again could use more cream 3. Yasai bolognese: liked the asparagus. Wagyu beef just tastes like regular beef. The sauce falls flat. Missing some acidity from the tomato sauce. 4. Cauliflower Soup: slightly sweet. Not much flavor 5. Garlic bread: more salty than garlicky butter. Toasted well though

Yelp
Went on a Friday night (party of 4) around 6pm and was actually able to be seated pretty much right away! Our server was attentive and staff were all around kind! Also very aesthetic design of the business and interior too. All of their portions can be split over 2 meals and are pretty fair for the price. I got the mentaiko pasta. It comes with lots of basil and lemon, which add good flavor while helping cut through the heaviness (although the heaviness isn't as bad here compared to some other mentaiko pastas). I felt like the sauce was a little lacking in both flavor and creaminess and was just missing something in general. But overall it was a good dish! A little oily when reheated.
