"Opening in mid-July inside Union Market at 1309 5th Street NE, this 800-square-foot outpost from Naples-born, award-winning pizzaiolo Giulio Adriani will serve the same Detroit- and New York-style pies and slices that helped it jump to no. 2 on 50 Top Pizza’s America list. The menu mirrors the original with starters like garlic knots, sandwiches such as meatball and prosciutto, and Italian desserts including cannoli and tiramisu. Customers can watch an open kitchen’s dough-flipping process, but the shop itself won’t offer seating, so slices are intended to be eaten in the market’s common area; the space sits to the left of a dividing wall that separates it from a companion cocktail bar. Adriani, who avoids Chicago deep-dish and prefers not to commercialize his personal reverence for the U.S.-born pope, is bringing the same celebrated pizza-focused approach to this location." - Lenore Adkins
"A new sustainably minded Korean spot in Union Market teams up with YETI to launch a dinner series called "A Taste of Adventure" that spotlights female chefs from across the country; the first dinner on Monday, February 24 features chef Liliana Myers from Denver, a graduate of the Women Culinary and Spirits Program by the LEE Initiative (the same group behind Shia). Myers’s five-course menu will include dishes like seared duck breast, oxtail kreplach (Ashkenazi Jewish dumplings), and Meyer lemon mille-feuille; tickets are $100 per person and reservations are available via OpenTable." - Emily Venezky
"A rally outside the food hall drew the hospitality workers’ union and seven employees from the restaurant group, who addressed a crowd about alleged “unjust working conditions”; the food hall was described as the site where the event occurred and sits just blocks from the three restaurants involved in the organizing. The gathering was used to publicize that workers have filed complaints with the NLRB, statements with the EEOC alleging hostile work environments “on the basis of race, sex, and disability,” and a filing at D.C.’s Office of Human Rights alleging Spanish‑speaking pregnant workers were not notified of their Paid Family Leave rights. Local 25 says 60 percent of workers across the three restaurants have signed union authorization cards and that the restaurants collectively employ around 400 people; management issued a statement pledging to “foster[] a respectful, fair workplace environment” and to support a secret‑ballot NLRB election: “The management at [the restaurants] are committed to fostering a respectful, fair workplace environment where staff feel welcome, safe, and heard.”" - Tierney Plumb
