Vale Rink @ The William Vale - Review - New York - The Infatuation

"If you want to know what flying feels like, we imagine gliding along the Manhattan skyline on a rooftop rink might get you close. The rink at The William Vale in Williamsburg is outside on the 23rd floor, but that’s not even the most interesting thing about it. It’s made of sustainable synthetic ice, which uses no power or water and also isn’t cold. Yes, you can now skate on a rooftop on ice that isn’t cold. We really do have everything now. Follow your skate with a cocktail at Westlight’s outdoor Winter Village pop-up. Make your skating and dining reservations here. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

It's "Glice" ie not real ice and you can't actually skate on it in the traditional sense. It's definitely not a skating rink. Lovely for some views and laughs as everyone tries to figure out how to walk on this but definitely save your money and go to a real rink.

Located on the last floor of The William Vale. Views are breathtaking but there is no ice on the rink, it’s a material made of plastic. 📍111 N 12th street, on the rooftop of The William Vale hotel 📆 Wed-Thur 2-10pm Fri 2pm-12am Saturday 12-12 Sunday 12-10pm Until end of March 💰 12$ children, 20$ adults, no time limit

I had already booked a reservation here before I read the reviews. I was thinking of canceling but glad I didn’t. A few takeaways: 1. Yes it’s Glice. It’s not real ice and it’s a bit different. But after 5 minutes on it I was able to skate. Sure it wasn’t the same but it was pretty good. Everyone complaining needs to chill, it’s not that bad. 2. The customer service was amazing. I had to change my reservation time and while the phone number provided didn’t work, I did what no one in the previous reviews thought to do… call the hotel. They told me to call back when the rink opened. I did. They then transferred me to the rink. They moved my reservation no problem. I showed up and everyone was extremely friendly and even took pictures for me. I saw 5 star customer service. 3. The view was great! Sure you can get a similar view for free, but the skating was fun and worth it. 4. I went on a Sunday mid day and the rink was empty.

Biggest issue is they charged my card twice for our group and then doubles that price and charged us a third time as if we all went four times to this place. Customer service is very unhelpful so had to dispute it with credit card company. The Glice is definitely not even close to real ice. Save your money and see the view for free without the ice skating.

Terrible customer service and an unpleasant experience all around. They ask you to let them know if you need to cancel but the only phone number provided is a fax machine and they do not respond to their provided email for cancellations or changes. Then, they send you an email asking you to "please next time just let us know that you won't be able to make it" and charge you a fee for no-show. I hope they update their systems soon, and until then definitely do not recommend this rink.

So this place sounded really cool and fun, when I found it. I got there with my family. The views are stunning and the staff is really nice and helpful. So we’ve been warned that the rink is not made from real ice, they called it glice. Which is really confusing, cause they could just say that it’s regular plastic. When we got to the rink it was impossible to skate. None of four of us could make a simple move because how slippery the material was for skating, plus the skates were not sharp at all. So we ended up paying $20 each and we left 10 min after, because we just kept falling (and we are not beginners). So they could make it more clear that it’s hard to skate on this material, or they could give a chance to try it for couple minutes before paying, so we could know what we are going to pay for. The idea of this fake ice is worse than it sounds. They could just make it a regullar roller skating rink, so customers wouldn’t be confused. The idea of ice skating on the roof is very cool, but it’s horrible how they implemented it. No wonder why there was no people over there except us

DO NOT GO HERE. I wish I would've looked in to it more before reserving. It is not real ice, it's a plexiglass type of material and the skates they give you aren't real either (no toe pick and a flat blade). It is impossible to get any traction so all you can do is grip the side and look at the view (which is the one good thing about this rink). They need to have it more widely advertised that this isn't real ice, I felt completely misled. From someone who loves real ice skating in the winter I was very disappointed. A complete waste of money and time.

Save your money and avoid this TRAP! Not only is it not actually an ice skating rink (instead, the Vale seems content to take advantage of the fact that few people are likely to actually know what "glice" is), but every avenue of communication with the staff is either out-of-date or misleading by design. After realizing my mistake shortly after making my purchase, I attempted on three separate occasions to contact the staff using a different method of provided communication to request the refunds they imply. The results were two instances of fax machines ringing in my ear and a "failure to send" notice via email. The "confirmation" you receive after purchase also explains that, if you fail to contact staff in advance and fail to arrive for your time slot, a small fee would be applied. However, after communication attempts failed and deciding that it'd be fine to accept the fee by missing my slot, I was charged FULL price for tickets I didn't want or use. The Vale Rink, in my experience, is a complete scam, and you owe it to yourself to save yourself the frustration that I've felt throughout this ordeal.
